Thanks for your insight👍🏾. Me personally, I'm older and I don't care about being in the middle of nowhere or living outside of the US. I'll go where I have to make it work, with in reason Proverbs 16:9 - A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.

I went to a caribbean med school. Their match lists are extremely misleading (represent 2nd year and 3rd residents to make it a bigger list), and over 85% of students get weeded out in the program. From the 15% remaining, about half are able to get a residency.

I am a Caribbean med school graduate (SGU), currently in Cardiology fellowship, will be starting Interventional soon. While some things Dr. Pinessett discusses is true, his message is also misleading. Couple facts just want to clarify. 1) If you cannot get into a US medical school for low grades or whatever, and Caribbean schools are your only option, you should only go if you are truly passionate about it, as it is true that it is harder to come back to the US, but not as hard as some say it is. Obviously would be harder with someone with a low GPA, that is something you yourself have to self reflect your chances of succeeding medical school. This is your chance, it is your risk, and you personally have to weigh the risk and benefit, but to say a blanket statement, do not go is simply wrong. 2) Dr. Pinesset talks about getting IV league residencies.. blah blah blah. Not everybody going to medical school is going after that prestigious plastics/ortho/optho/surgery or whatever. He makes these example of zero IMG in these highly competitive, programs. But not everybody wants those residencies. Some going into medical field actually WANTS to do primary care. If you are one that do not mind primary care, Caribbean schools are not a bad option, as long as you do not fail any classes, make at least average on the USMLE, and no attempts, your shot of matching are good. 3) Once you get done with training, nobody cares where you went to medical school, but more your work ethics and the work you do. Do not be misled thinking you will be less respected as an IMG once you are working, and do not have that as a reason not to attend a Caribbean school.

@PremedProductivity

Jimmy Yee your points are exactly what I said. It’s is a harder route. If people go and are not ready it is not going to work. If you are fine with primary care then carribean is fine. You’re saying the exact same thing I said. You are cardiology, which means you went primary care (IM) first and then did a specialty fellowship. Congrats to you on your success, I never said there was anything wrong with primary care. But students need to be aware of how their choices affect their future options.

I totally disagree with you. I went to UCE in the Dominican Republic. I got an excellent medical education, passed basic sciences and clinical sciences of the FMGEMS (before USMLE), I matched at an internal Medicine. program at Temple University (a prestigious institution in Philadelphia, the US medical Mecca) on the first try , passed FLEX exam (again before USMLE) without problem. I was licensed in Pennsylvania and Florida without problem. As far as salaries go, I don't think +300 K a year is too bad. Most of my fellow Americans have done likewise, including people going into Neurosurgery and Thoracic Surgery. I agree it is more challenging to go through a foreign school, however,l if you're motivated and goal oriented you can do just fine.

I believe that the MCAT is based more on test taking skill. Step 1 is a test that can be beaten with hardwork. We had a student who got a 24 on her MCAT then got a 252 on her Step 1. Step 1 is about hard work, not natural test taking skills.

Hi Doc, Whats the opinion of US residency programs on high achieving International Medical Schools such as Cambridge or Oxford in the UK (always ranked within the top 3 or 4 schools in the world)- are they still considered to be at a massive disadvantage as compared to domestic schools?. I accept that higher Step scores may be needed but just interested to know what the perception of such schools are by US hospitals.

Also in terms of going Caribbean med schools(CMS) -what are your views on SGU and Ross?? i feel that when people factor in stats about imgs they include the schools that nobody has heard of, ones that accept students without mcats, and can come off as (well at least to me)sketchy and poorly run. I am most interested in Ross and UAG.. do these have better stats than the rest of the CMS's

I'm a Canadian high-school student. I was wondering what you think about Canadian medical schools compared to American ones? Also, what are the chances a Canadian medical school graduate will get matched in an American residency? Is it the same as a foreign medical school graduate?
@23magneta
@23magneta 7 лет назад
You can certainly get matched into a U.S. residency, but you need to be much better than your U.S. med school counterpart. Preference is given to those who have graduated from a U.S. medical school. If I were you, I would complete your undergrad in Canada and then apply to a U.S. medical school if you want to practice in the U.S. Make sure that you complete the prerequisite requirements during college and take the MCAT. It doesn't matter what you choose to specialize in during college as long as you fulfill the prerequisite courses (biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, etc).

I have to agree/disagree. As an IMG that transferred into an IVY LeagueMedical school I can speak first hand. While yes, you do need to do your research and sort out the bullshit schools from the real ones, but the one I went to had full accreditation in the states and most of the professors teaching were doctors who retired or just didn't want to live in the US. Once I knew the pathway back into the states was solid and viable it was on me as a student to study hard with my given tools. At the end of every semester we were given NBME exams from the states that made up 50% of our final grades. I scored a 262 on my USMLE & used that plus took the GMAT, did research while in Med school, and transferred into an IVY League school but that was just to satisfy my own dreams to go to an Ivy League. My other classmates went straight into rotations after their Step 1 in Chicago, Baltimore, & NY. They did well on Step 2 & are now doctors. I'm a few months behind because I transferred out but I would never belittle the education & opportunities I received. Congratulations that the path you took lead you to success, but don't belittle others because they didn't take the same path as you, but still get the same title as you. Everyone has a different path to take for dif. Reasons.

I really want to go to medical school. my educational background is very tricky. I went to a small religious college that is not recognizable to most med school. I am taking my pre-meds at a recognizable university. my grades are high and I am doing well but realistically I won't be able to get into any "real" medical school. I still plan on studying for my MCAT and stiving for the high marks. i dont want to cheat my way around the bush. but I also dont want to take my whole undergrade again.

I'm considering going into Radioligy. 2 of the residents at Westchester Medical Center (Vallhalla, New York in Westchester County) went to carribean med schools. I still wouldnt take the risk, as you're always more likely to get a position there if you went to any US medical school. Although Westchester Medical Center may not be in California, it would be a pretty desirable setting, as 30 miles north of New York City and you can take a Metro North train from Valhalla to Grand Central (1 hour ride)

Dr. Pinesett you focus on Caribbean medical schools as a whole. Providing very generalized statistics and information. When you say not to apply to a carribean medical school because the institution doesn't give you a competitive background, are you saying that you can do as well as possible in these schools and still never become a resident, or that it's just much harder? I'd imagine that because the carribean schools are less competitive for admission and are a second chance for sub-par undergrads, those same students continue their trend of mediocre academics and then it doesn't help that they come from a mediocre institution, and it looks like no coincidence to residencies... But is it really that bad to the point that I could go to a carribean school, be a studying machine and do amazingly, even superior to the bulk of American med students on my exams, and still get nowhere because of the school alone? or is it just a disadvantage?
@wallylintiso1
@wallylintiso1 5 лет назад
I would politely disagree. I go to SGUL (a UK medical school) and I would tell ya that our school has a solid matching rate in US residencies. Most continue with the foundation program and stay in the UK but the very few that take the U.S route have matched. Take courage y'all, if you have to go to med school outside of the US, do it. Make sure you do well on USMLE to be competitive, that's it. The American traditional medical school route is not the only route to becoming an amazing Doctor in the States (or anywhere in the world).

based on your thoughts from this video and your experience as a medical physician, are you suggesting that there is intentional bias in favor of medical school students regardless of the selection criteria? I only asked because I'm strongly considering a Caribbean medical school for a variety of reasons. I have a 3.7 gpa and scored a 517 on the MCAT. I applied to 11 US schools and only got 3 interviews and didn't get accepted anywhere. I'm 30 yrs of age (military veteran) and don't have the time to apply and throw away money each year going through the political process of selection at these programs. I'm only in need of an opportunity. I know I have what it takes to succeed in anything. Is going to an outside school guarantees me no opportunity to practice medicine in the US? thanks for your time.

Aaron Hendrix I didn't say there is no chance to get a residency from a Caribbean school. I said it is harder and requires being ready to excel in every way to create residency opportunities. If you think you can be one of the top students then you'll have a chance of American residencies.

There are many reasons, some are fair and some are unfair, but either way its misleading to say that "it doesn't matter" where you "get your MD". It does matter. An MD (or DO) without a residency isn't worth much of anything. The match statistics out of the caribbean are somewhere just less than 50% give or take. The reality is that times have changed and virtually no one entering a caribbean school today is going to be a US neurosurgeon. XYZ School of Medicine of St. Elsewhere on ABC Island can literally be the best medical education in the world with the best professors and amazing rotations. It doesn't matter, because you are still coming from a Caribbean school. It's really unfortunate, and I truly don't think less of anyone who attends one of these schools, but its the reality and people should know this before entering.

This does not apply up here in Canada. Also it doesn't apply to several U.S.A medical schools. If you actually do your research, you will find that there are quite a few Carribean "Accredited" medical programs. Also for some programs in the U.S.A and in Canada the faculty will have "limited" spots specifically for IMG students with the top grades. If you work hard, are passionate and always strive to be number one, you will get a residency.
@PremedProductivity
@PremedProductivity 6 лет назад
Ash Ketchum this video isn’t for Canadians. It’s for American students. I advise Canadian students and there are many caveats for them. The research supports exactly what I said. Furthermore, you clearly haven’t done your research because the “limited” spots are not designated for IMGs, they’re open to IMGs. Those are 2 very different things.
@nrlombardi
@nrlombardi 6 лет назад
Clearly your biased and egotistical. Your "research" is flawed. Also your wrong about spots being "open" not "designated" Yes, there are spots open to IMG's. However, there are also "designated" spots within certain faculties in Canada. Not 100% on the U.S.A but I am sure there is at least one in America. Haven't done the research on the U.S.A medical school curriculum. Also considering you had to make additional videos and not be able to portray it all at once in a "educational" way shows you lack "rigorous" research skills. But of course your a Doctor so you would know......no pun Intended.
@PremedProductivity
@PremedProductivity 6 лет назад
Ash Ketchum again, the subject matter discussed involves getting American residencies. There are no American universities that designate spots for IMGs. If you don’t like the content, don’t watch the videos. But, to insult me and say I don’t know what I’m talking about or haven’t done the research is ignorant. It shows that you don’t do research, because if you had done your research you would know that I am the leading expert in medical admissions (not egotistical, just the truth). I wish you all the best in your journey, and I hope that you find the advice you are looking for to reach your goals!

He is just misleading people. The data that he is talking about shows the entire world's FMG and U.S grads. Not all FMG came from the same medical school system, and not all foreign medical are not in U.S medical school standards. Everyone have to take the USMLE whether you are U.S Grad or FMG to apply for residency in the U.S. Now that significantly determines your match for residency. You are right SGU have matched over 890 people.

And I absolutely agree about those caribbean med schools and their equivalents in eastern europe when it comes to the quality of education that you receive there, however please keep in mind that the medical education in Scandinavian countries, France and Germany is considered to be among the best in the world and it costs you almost nothing (300 € per semester als a citizen of those countries) to attend med school.

You make some good points but I think you are wrong. If you don't have a sound mind and an agenda don't go to med school at all, whether American or foreign. yes going to Caribbean for med sch affects your chances for residency but if you are focused and get your grades and score well on boards then you will be fine. the higher specialties are the issue. if you plan to do primary care or low specialties then you are safe going to Caribbean med sch but if you want higher specialties like surgery, it is still safe to go to Caribbean but have a back up plan, good connections from the inside and be ready to hustle. if you can get into American med sch, then great because you are spoon fed everything. just keep in mind ppl fail out of American med sch and even the board exams after given everything.

so just my opinion but you sir are putting out a product and making schools like Ross, St. George, AUC, and SABA look bad by grouping them in a large group of IMG's. you want people to buy your product and waste time by selling your product rather then them going to Ross or school mentioned. You dont talk about the facts and data or even show it. Ross, St George, and AUC matched over 2400 people combined last year combined with a 88% first time match, now yes they do make you take a test through the school and you have 3 tries before you get kicked out and the test is a prep for the steps. these schools give people a chance to become MD's because a lot of people would have made it to the US if there was spots or if they did better freshman year of undergrad but the past is behind them and they get an opportunity of a life to to fulfill a dream. I personally have grown up around medicine my whole life and many of my mentors have been from the Caribbean and they are very well known in my community as being the best in there specialty. they have taught me its not about if you go to Hopkins or Ross its about what you take out of the program you are in and make the best out of the hand you are dealt. coming from a IMG doesnt make you any less of a doctor you still have to pass the test.

Dear Dr. Andre, there is a statistics on the IMGs and AMGs saying that this year, the graduates of 2017, 93 percent of AMGs got placed into residency positions in America while only around 50 percent of IMGs matched into residency programs, even those programs were generally not competitive like primary care and internal medicine. I have a friend who graduated this year and he had a killer USMLE score and he could have been placed in whatever competitive specialty he wanted if he was an AMG but because he is an IMG he matched into a position in internal medicine. Same goes with many other IMG graduates after all the good AMGs are matched into respectable residency programs whatever seat that is left is generally at very low competitive positions that no AMG wanted to get into or that rejected poor AMG applicants. Those seats are then put for the match for IMGs and only the cream of the top, the ones with amazing scores, that could have got into whatever specialty they wanted, get into secondary positions that they may not have necessarily wanted. To be honest spending all the time and money to a degree that turns out to be a hallux even if you were the top ten percent really frustrates me. But what could they have done, even if they went and studied undergrad in the US what chance have they got to get into medical school as a noncitizen? Would med schools regard them as a qualified applicant? I am starting my freshman year at the University of Northern Iowa in August and I know a lot of international applicants that really went through a lot. A lot of them advised me to attend undergrad and med school in America. To be honest, it's generally the same time span that would be spent to be a medical graduate, but the question that bugs me is that are non-residets regarded qualified if they applied to med school. Do a lot of students generally, don't make it to med school. Applicants who have an amazing GPA and a good MCAT score would they have a chance if they were noncitizens.

fwins: this video is targeted towards American students who want to practice in the U.S. Obviously, things may be different if they want to practice in a different country. He said nothing about the quality of the U.S. healthcare system or about the quality of education in the Caribbean. What he said was absolutely true: the standards to be accepted to a Caribbean medical school are lower than the standards for a U.S. medical school. It is also very difficult (though not impossible) for a Caribbean medical school graduate to match into a residency in the U.S. I have friends who did very well at St. George's University and have not been able to match into even primary care in the U.S. They graduated 3 years ago and still haven't been matched into a residency, so their chances of ever practicing medicine in the U.S. is pretty much zero. Being as good as a U.S. medical school graduate is not enough if you graduate from a Caribbean school; you need to be superior.

Dr. Pinesett (or anyone who has taken time to read this ridiculously long 3-page essay post), I would like to say THANK YOU for your very informative videos, especially this one where you comment on residencies. The thought never occurred to me that primary care is the option if one doesn't make it into the EXTREMELY COMPETITIVE residencies. The ones who make it to residency are the "Cream Of The Crop" of the "CREAM OF THE CROP." Of course I may be wrong, but that is what I learned from this video. My dad has terminal cancer, which has highly motivated me towards medicine. I spent the last two years of my life taking care of him, and just now had the time to really gain medical experience through volunteering at a local clinic that offers VERY affordable healthcare for low-income families. I have always wanted to become an oncologist to help families and individuals going through the same situation as my family. But that is a specialty, which is not easy. Of course, nothing in life is easy, but the competition is definitely intense. The point of this comment is you've helped me make a HIGHLY INFORMED decision about medicine. My family is struggling intensely financially (excuse my grammar), and I need money ASAP. At the time of this comment, I am a senior thinking about my options in life. I know that you said in one of your videos to be confident, and claiming that I am not going to make it that far since I am not the cream of the crop is the exact opposite. I mean I am smart, everyone has the potential. Just not the cream of the crop. Dr. Pinesett, you truly are an expert in your field and know what you're talking about. And thanks for keeping it real. Even some of the "big 3" Caribbean schools will accept a class of 1000, but only have 600 spots for clinical rotations, so they gradually are failing students (and taking tuition along the way) so those who make it through the 4th semester but don't pass the school's "pre-USMLE" exam (which you must pass before they let you sit for USMLE) are also failed out (with over $100,000 in loans)... Faculty are pressured to include extra hard Qs from Q banks so that the school can eliminate certain percentage of people for whom they don't have rotation spots!Medical school is HARD enough - these international "for-profit" school's are very unhealthy places in which to study - at the very minimum go to countries that offer spots with their native students (e.g., Ireland, UK, Australia) and that have high educational standards ....Good luck!

Charisma, you have incessantly made rude and misinformed statements on my channel. I will again address your misplaced rhetoric in hopes that you will be a little less aloof in your quest to become a doctor. 1. I never promise anyone I can get them into an Ivy league school. Not anywhere on my channel or on my website does it say that. I present an accurate account of things. I promise students working with me, taking my courses, or listening to my videos that I will give you the most accurate and most helpful advice available anywhere. Additionally, I promise that working with me can help students maximize their own potential, whatever it may be. It would be unrealistic to expect everyone to go to an Ivy league school. Similarly, working with young people, it would be unrealistic to have everyone I advise actually heed my advice. Have you never ignored your parents warning or advice and as a result ended up in a bad situation? I have...it is part of growing up and learning. It is by no means a sign that my parents are bad people, haven't given me sound advice, or that I am not close with my parents. 2. I don't tell students that the only way I can help them is if they pay me. Again, you need to do fact-finding before you make empty statements. I actually have 6 speaking events (lectures, workshops) for students that are absolutely FREE over the next 2 months. That means students can come get EXPERT advise from me for FREE. I do this because I understand that not all students can afford to pay for services, so I offer them a FREE option. As an example, my med school interview course, which is available on my website, is 8 hours long. I charge only $199 for it., but if that is even too expensive for students, I held 4 and a half hour med school interview workshop 2 months ago that contained the same material. The price for this workshop was only $20. I am not trying to swindle or force students to pay for anything. I cater to all students!! This is also why I have cut my course price in half right now and am offering payment plans to allow any and every student access to the BEST RESOURCES. I don't have to do this. I could do what other people do and charge thousands of dollars for coaching and instruction. It would be ridiculous to assert that someone expecting a service would always get it for free. You don't go to McDonalds and order a cheeseburger expecting it to be free. 3. As far as this unaccredited and unlicensed coach thing you keep bringing up, you simply don't know what you are talking about. In your last comment you mentioned how you have a mentor that you work with that is an anesthesiologist. You take her advice. My question is, does she have a coaching license? My follow-up question is: do any Ivy league medical school deans have coaching licenses? The answer to both of these questions is no. The reason for this is that coaching licenses are certificates and contain no intrinsic value. My value is proven and I don't have to justify it. You can google me, my credentials are legitimate. I don't have to get a coaching license from some person who doesn't know more about motivating and training people than I do. My expertise is recognized by universities, which is why they reach out to me to have me come help their students. These schools have included Stanford University, UCI, UCLA, and UC Davis to name a few. 4. As a continuance of this, you tried to discredit me by saying that I can't be a consultant because consultants have MBAs and I have an MPH. This is so incorrect, I cringe that you have such a limited perspective of the world. For starters, if you would do some fact checking, you would know that my MPH is a focus on health care management and administration. All of the graduates of my UCLA Masters program work as healthcare consultants, healthcare administrators, and healthcare executives. Second, I have colleagues who are consultants for all sorts of industries who don't even possess a masters degree at all. How is this possible? Because again, a person's value is not in a piece of paper, it is in what they know and what they can deliver. Lastly, if I can't be a consultant, please explain how I am a strategic consultant to The Princeton Review's Admissions Counseling Department? I will tell you how, because I am a recognized expert in medical school admissions and in student development. I was the lead architect for their new medical school admissions product, it is amazing, you should look into it. You can find it here: www.princetonreview.com/med-school-admissions/med-school-counseling 5. The last point I want to address is from your last post, when you told me I don't have any "street cred" and that I am not really black because my wife is not black. That is not only racist, it is IGNORANT. You said your anesthesia mentor is a white woman, do you think she would appreciate you making such a statement? Better yet, do you think it decreases your "street cred" because your lead advisor is a white woman? You're a small-minded person and that is why despite your feigned contempt for me, you continue to visit my RU-vid channel to consume my content and then spit hate-speech. It is 2016, and all races, sexes and religions need to work together and be one community. Simple-minded people like yourself keep working to maintain racial divides and keep discrimination alive and thriving. Educate yourself and grow! So Charisma or Carisma, I don't know how you spell it since you keep changing the name you are commenting under, please become an expert before you try to denigrate someone for spreading positivity and trying to pave the way for students to achieve their goals.

You are wrong. Completely disagree with you. I highly encourage more people to dream to become a doctor even if you dont get accepted into the US medical system.

I disagree with this guy. This guy is 1 dimesional. All the medical schools would train you to become a great doctor. Its your dream to become a doctor. its your passionate. To me, it does not matter which medical school you go to. It doesnt mean that you went to the best medical school that you are a great doctor. I totally disagree. Not all American doctors are better than foreign medical graduates. My family member got a medical degree from HCMCity, Vietnam. Spent couple years to review all steps, 1, 2, 3. It took two years to take and pass those steps 1 and 2. She got accepted several interviews and several residency spots. My friend also got a degree in Vietnam, her specialty was neurosurgery. She did lots of surgeries in her entire medical career when she was in Vietnam. I bet you , her skills cannot say more. She is highly talented and performs great surgery. I just disagree with this guy. I wonder how good is this guy?

Duc Vu I never said that foreign trained doctors were inferior. The point is, it is more difficult to practice medicine in America as a foreign Med school graduate. Would you agree with that?

Duc Vu I never said foreign graduates were inferior. I said it is harder to practice medicine in America as a foreign grad. That’s the truth, fair or not. How can you disagree with fact?

You are misleading the facts and misleading people. You grouped Caribbean and other international medical schools (the rest of the world) together. Of course not all international medical schools are up to U.S standards, but that doesn't mean some international medical school are not in U.S standards. Furthermore, just because someone who graduated from a U.S medical school doesn't he/she is any better than a foreign medical school grad. The data that was presented by the educational commission shows the rest of the world and U.S medical schools. If you're trying to talk down schools in the Caribbean or any foreign medical school in particular, then you should speak more specifically. SGU just got matched over 850 students this year. THAT IS FACTS and NOTHING MISLEADING ABOUT THAT. U.S hospitals that refuse to offer FMG residencies have their own agenda(Let's keep it real here) but that doesn't mean there are no hospitals that don't offer residencies to FMG. You are entitled to your own option, but your opinion is shameful. Keep to your business side of the things on RU-vid before videos like this backfires on you.

I did not watch this Video at all.... just have to mention I went to AUA in 2012, did not listen to these s****, I matched this year for internal in NYC.

Abtin Haghani LoL. Had you watched the video you would have heard me say if you go Caribbean most likely you will end up primary care (internal medicine included) in New York or the south. I also said that if you ball out in a Caribbean med school you can match into a specialty or a different locale, but that is the exception. Thanks for confirming exactly what I said.

@@PremedProductivity You are an funny. I have looked at lots of US Med School brag about how they are focused at producing Primary Care Doctors and now you are saying that's a Bad thing>

Not true. A lot of IMG are interventionist cardiologists, surgeons, raduology, oncology internal medicine, they prepare you well enough to compete with ant US residency. Plus they do not have those student debts. Is eay cheaper than going to any US med schools and they have hands on 100% with patients. I have notice more US people going aboard for med schools, some schools are 5 to 8 year programs. Then they go to residency.
