Coffee accelerates aging in the skin. You are wasting your time and money by adding collagen to it. Stop coffee, keep your collagen supplement, drink 64 oz-80 oz of water a day, do a little cardio every day or other day for blood flow, and watch how much better your skin looks. Coffee/Caffeine is depleting; people don't realize it because it's normalized- just like smoking/nicotine used to be.

I began taking collagen for 7 or 8 years ago in hopes of easing joint pain. I had to stick with it at least 6 months before I could honestly say it was helping, but it DOES help. My ibuprofen consumption has been reduced dramatically. I am a breast cancer survivor, and a horseback rider. I think genetics have a lot to do with your skin… My great grandmother had such nice skin at 97, that medical students came and photographed her for medical journals… I am trying to help with the sunscreen and the actives. I do use and like collagen. I don’t use it for the possible benefits. I like that it makes my coffee frothy. I did a search of oral collagen for joints. I stick to studies from NIH or other reputable sources. There are some recent studies of various forms of collagen and effect on joints. It was interesting to learn that type 2 native collagen showed an antinflammatory effect in the joint, whereas hydrolyzed collagen did not, though it had other benefits. Since I deal with lifelong inflammation in my joints, this was of interest to me. I am taking both hydrolyzed collagen plus the native type 2 collagen to see if joints improve. Too early to tell. I do think I get a bit of GI upset. I’d trade that for being in less pain.

I've used Vital Proteins marine collagen peptides for about 3 years. The reason for starting was the claim that it might help with pain. I have to say it did to a very significant degree. My nails went from very ridged and brittle to close to their youthful strength over about 3 months. The change was observable as the improvement progressed from the roots. Visible improvement in the skin were in the form of a persistent flaky, dry patch on my forehead stopped being dry and flaky among some other things. I do feel a little "works for me"ish about it, but I'm ok with that.

The very visible results were on the nails of my thumbs. Before: Thin nails, my thumbs‘ nails are usually wavy from using them and general living. After: I could see they actually stopped being wavy as they grew. Other nails got stronger too. No other change occurred that could have affected it. I ran out, didn’t purchase another right after and I could see how my nails turned a bit wavy again. I bought a new package yesterday.

I have been taking the collagen peptides for a little over two months. I had to stop this week because of weight gain, acne, and intestinal and throat issues. Never had these issues prior to taking it. I’m 45. I’m going to see if I go back to how I was prior to taking it and see if that was what was causing it. Nothing else has changed.

I'm not buying this "Roxadustat contaminated collagen" claim. In fact, the ITIA stated "The tribunal accepted Halep’s argument that they had taken a contaminated supplement, but determined the volume the player ingested could not have resulted in the concentration of roxadustat found in the positive sample." More likely, Halep was taking that drug on purpose. She and her coach are just blaming a dietary supplement.

I have been taking Vital Proteins for a little over one year now. I am a senior. I began taking it with 0 expectations. Also because of the high cost, I have been taking half of the recommended dose. I noticed no improvement with my nails, very minimal hair improvement but it is hard to tell because I have very long hair. Skin...hard to say because I began a skin care regime 6 months ago which could attribute a benefit to my skin, but it does look better, but don't know exactly what improved it. All that said, I have noticed a big improvement in my joint pain. It was very slow to happen, but I would say about 5 months into the collagen I noticed something was different about my body and suddenly I realized I had no pain in my knees whatsoever. I think it is fair to attribute it to taking the collagen. My husband also noticed a reduction in joint pain.

I'd check out her video on estrogen from a couple weeks ago. I might also check Mary Claire Haver (ob/gyn) who specializes in HRT and has talked about this. Penn Smith Skincare did a video with one of the doctors from the My Alloy site about their M4 cream. The Cut also had an interesting article, is that estrogen in your face cream safe? They talk about estriol, estradiol, MEP and the issues that can arise from topical and internal mixing of different estrogens.

I’m 67 yo and less than 6 months taking collagen peptides. I decided to try it to improve skin appearance, which it probably has, but not significantly. I already have regularly used Tretinoin for over five years. What I dramatically noticed is an improvement in my hair texture! Plus my hair and nails are growing much faster. I have no side effects so I’m continuing it, for sure.

Agreed! Any product under consideration should be examined for quality and efficacy. But given that taking collagen is controversial in itself--a red flag that shouldn't be ignored, I would rather support the body in creating its own as a better strategy.

I have definitely noticed a significant improvement in my nails after taking collagen peptides (Verisol) for about 8 months. My nails have been brittle all my life, but ever since I started taking collagen, they have become stronger, that's a fact. However, I can't say for sure if my skin has improved because I have been following a skincare routine, which might also be contributing to any improvements I have noticed on that regard.

This is a silly video. You are saying collagen supplementation is bad because someone might have an allergy and someone might get an adulterated product. These things have nothing to do with the safety and efficacy of collagen peptides. Nestle owns Vital Proteins and the company has an unmatched safety profile and the products are completely safe and greatly beneficial. Just know the brand and don't buy "Vetal Proteins" the knock off.

Dr. Dray sometimes I think you’re in my head and hear my subconscious thoughts because I just bought some Collagen this week!! I wanted to test out how it makes me feel and see if there are any improvement in my body. However, the lack of regulation in the industry does make it intimidating, and we’re sort of hoping these capitalist (I don’t intend that as an insult or as bad) manufacturing this stuff are doing the right thing and produce a safe product. But I don’t know how to controllably hydrolyze collagen polymers sooooo I appreciate anyone educated speaking on these supplements and helping me decide if this stuff is, A: safe, and, B: worth it! Thanks Doc!!!

I really appreciate your candor in this video. Dr. Stanfield recommends collagen, which is why I began taking it. He relies on meta analyses a lot, and I don't have the skill to interpret the reliability of those. As a vegan, I am extremely conflicted about taking them. The skin is an organ, so I should do my utmost to take care of it and ensure its longevity. And these products typically use byproducts, I believe. I do tend to think that my wrinkles look less pronounced when I take it, but that they appear to return when I cease taking it. I'm not sure if there is any longevity benefit, or if it is purely cosmetic. I wish there was a vegan alternative. But these supplements are not cheap, either. Perhaps I will quit taking it. I'm 36 and my partner is 44, btw. Thanks for the great content!

@boblablaw4857

@@abbyn8179 yes you do. you need expertise to combine mete analyses into a broader opinion. And meta analyses can also be lacking, because the underlying studies were lacking. Just because the are the best doesn't mean they are comprehensive or can't be compared and contrasted

I've been reading up on the collagen/cancer link via the NIH's medical library. It's complex. The specific collagen to avoid is Type IV. While it inhibits tumor growth initially, the collagen also creates pathways that act as super-highways for tumor cells in later stages. CB Supplements makes an NSF "sport certified" multi-collagen complex that contains no Type IV, though obviously your mom should follow the guidance provided by her oncologist. Wishing her well.
