The Truth About Compassion Fatigue In Healthcare 

Compassion fatigue is hard even in my profession as a hairdresser you hear so many sad stories day after day and you empathize and take it all on and it's so draining. On the other hand, my mom's been in the hospital for four weeks and everything that you see around you is exhausting speaking to the nurses. They also said what a toll it takes on them on a daily basis.

My nurse heart is so heavy lately. Thank you for this reminder.

In Home health nursing they want you to have boundaries with the families and just do your job ,go home. Ummm it doesn’t actually work that way.

This is what funeral directors struggle with with each and every family we meet with. It can be exhausting. Self care is a must. So is talking with other funeral professionals who understand the stresses.

I remember only 2 things during my emergency with a ruptured Spleen at Carle Hospital in Urbana Illinois a long time ago, a young woman with a real gold necklace came right up next to me with the biggest smile I’ve still ever seen, I was so out of it I thought she was a clown, she came to see me later in my room and told me she was a Pastor, and how the gold wove into her life, I’ll always remember her, and the next memory was when I woke up with a searing pain from midnight surgery, there was a young woman right there in that same instant of waking telling me I had had emergency surgery for a ruptured Spleen. Those two instances stand out in everything else that happened, maybe it’s because they brought order to a lot of chaos and confusion, not sure, but I treasure those two memories, I think mostly because they surprised me, and I never got surprises in life, they showed compassion, not only from them as individuals but from a vast quiet efficient system around them.

Yes. I remember the people who could be with situations where all our various limitations just are in the same gathering but also our various unlimitations. It has been most empowering making so much bearable.

This is why I left med/ surg and went to psych. In psych totally fine to feel nowhere else in nursing is that allowed. It's allowed in homecare/ hospice but mainly alone. In psych we all feel it at once and it's ok.

90% of our ED is just a bunch of awful people though so I don’t think I’ve ever felt compassion toward them for their non emergency’s like toe pain for 6 months (more annoyance towards why did you bother coming here.) But for people with actual emergency’s that need help yes I feel compassion.

The enemy of all health care workers.
