This is one secret I know that you did not put in your other costco videos. You can get display items such as, dishes christmas trees, televisions, appliances and even couches for sometimes up to 25% cheaper than the brand new ones that were on the shelf with the * the day before. Most of them are brand new, just no boxes.

@@thedealguy You can ask a supervisor directly if they have not taken them down, or some stores will have them on pallets by the registers with hand written price tags. The only exception I have ever seen as a costco vendor is the large appliances, they are usually on the end cap by the wall with the written price tags.

Having been members at Sam’s Club and Costco and one year at both, we are now solid Costco members... mostly due to three things. Firstly, we noticed that our local Costco was a much cleaner store and shopping experience than our Sam’s Club. Secondly, we found much healthier food base for our particular needs at Costco. They have many more organic meat, vegetables and other products at Costco than Sam’s Club - and at good prices as well. Thirdly, we buy all of the bulk meat for our family gatherings at Costco and find that everyone else is always impressed with the quality and flavor. One somewhat peripheral bonus is the fact that Costco does not carry all of the “junk treats and snacks” that Sam’s Club carries. While this may be a drawback to families who fill lunchboxes five days a week, we are a retired couple prone to cravings... and the fact that we can shop for and bring home more organic, healthy necessities and not be bothered with the murmurings of the junk food calling our names as we pass by. ▶️ New to your channel, and enjoying all your videos! ◀️

It’s no wonder Costco has so many senior citizens that go shopping over there. Sam’s club has some nice too. It’s better to avoid buying the Apple TV device and the unlocked phones that are locked up at Sam’s club. Sam’s club just doesn’t care about putting up a note or sign that says out of stock when the Apple TV device is sold out. Costco does a better job with the handling of items are sold out. Costco will put up a sign that says out of stock when the Apple TV device is sold out.

Same as Walmart, even the Target crowd is more middle class then Walmart. I lived in town where Walmart and Target were right next to each other. Target was always clean and fully stocked. Walmart was run down dirty, torn out floor in places, many items were not stocked, but if you got lucky and found someting worth buying their price could not be beaten, just wash any clothes first. Walmart customers are know for using clothes a while and then returning them which is why they had to change the return policy on clothes. Even the client were thinner at Target. Yep, you will not seen cars with replacement doors of another color like you do at Walmart. It is clearly a different client they are after.

Food Court?! Costco is the hands down winner! Also, Kirkland is not really a “brand”, but rather it is a packaging label that is put on mostly 3rd party premium products. Costco simply becomes the distributor for those products. A perfect example are the bottles of Imported olive oil and wine which are merely stamped with the Kirkland label. However, there are a few “Kirkland” products that are indeed manufactured in-house, i.e. toilet paper, etc. Oh, and they own their own chickens and the factories where they are processed. I did a case study of Costco in graduate school- very, very interesting business model once you look under the hood of their operations! A truly amazing American company which was founded by a brilliant entrepreneur, James Sinegal.

What I irks me the most about Costco is that they don’t post signs to let you know what’s in each isle so you end up walking around the giant warehouse to pick crap you don’t really need! They also seem to get rid of product faves quicker at Costco where as Sam’s Club is more reliable in keeping a lot of the same brand name groceries! Great video!

Costco wants you to wander around the store.... that's one of the reasons they relocate items periodically. The more you wander around, the more likely see something that you want to buy. This is one of the reasons I shopped at Sam's over Costco, because I could easily find want I'm looking for and then get out of the store as quick as possible.

@@Painfulwhale360 HAHA That's what my husband said Mon. when we went. I went for the coffee pods just to find them in the same isle as the ground coffee. It too them several years to finally put them together. Also a few other items are rearranged. But that doesn't make me buy what I don't need or want either. So I agree with you.
@odd02

@@Painfulwhale360 I think you missed the point they were making. They weren't saying Costco made them necessarily spend more. I believe they meant they use cheap marketing strategies of not labeling things so you're more inclined to spend more. Yes, the shopper is the one making the purchase but if things were labelled they can get in and leave.

I personally like both! But I do think that Sam’s Club Scan&Go app is INCREDIBLE! The Costco and Sam’s Club in my area both have self checkouts, so I think the app definitely gives Sam’s Club an edge when it comes to exiting quickly. On average I wait in line longer at Costco than Sam’s Club.

when I was choosing between the two I compared the items that I was planning on buying most frequently. The same product at Costco, on sale, was more than Sam's clubs regular price by more than $5. The membership costs and perks were better at Sam's club too. And an added bonus, I can use my Sam's credit card at Walmart. Also, there are 3 Sam's but only 1 Costco within an hour drive.
@toriless
@toriless 2 года назад
I have none but probably a dozen within 1 hour and 4 within 20 minutes. I lived in a town with two Walmart's and even they did not have any Sam's Clubs. The only time I have one is in run down areas. Usually net to a Grocery Outlet and Goodwill. I do have 3 Walmart's but they are about 20 to 30 minutes away depending on which one actually has anything in stock. I think they get some items once every half year from what I have seen. Walmart is Amazon's best friend. The other 98% of items they do not stock you can always get from Amazon. I even have to buy stuff that you think Home Depot would carry from Amazon. Even simple things like shoe laces. I could spend all day going Target then Walmart stores and find nothing. 5 minutes on Amazon and I already have too many choices, not too little or none.

Thank you for the comparison...I've been looking forward to this. I have both premier membership but I shop at Sam's club almost all the time. I love that they open as early as 7am compared to 9am or 10am at Costco especiallyfor people like me who work the graveyard shift and have kids. I can stop by at Sam's club to do my grocery shopping before going home and it saves me a lot of time to take care of my family and myself. It also makes a big help that Sam's club have the self check-out and scan and go which I use all the time. I only go to Costco if I need something that Sam's club doesn't have. Sam's club also have curbside pick up wherein Costco doesn't have (at least where I live). So for me, I prefer Sam's club.

I had both! I dropped Costco 90% because of check out, which you never mentioned! Sam's has a ton of self scan and also you can self scan and check out on the app to skip all lines except the one walking out the door. Costco you spend more time waiting in line than you do shopping.

This is the exact same reason I made the switch over to Sam's Club. Their app with the "Scan and Go" feature makes life so much easier. It saves you a lot of time and the self check out registers help. The ability to be in and out of Sam's club is the best. Not possible at all in a Costco. From my experience the gas lines at my local Sam's Club are definitely shorter as well. I've been recommending Sam's Club to family & friends for years and others have also made the switch. Time is very important.

I worked for Sam’s for almost 2 years and was treated like $h*t, our clubs turnover rate is approaching 20%. I hated working there all they care about is management. When I left there was only one person without a management role that worked there for more than 5 years. After two years and made 11.44 an hour and to clean, stock, manage 3 departments while the managers sit in the office until it’s time to tell us how bad we are at our job. Underpaid and mistreated.

The treatment of the worker's shows through on the floor at Costco. I have never had a bad experience with a Costco worker, they all know the store inside out, a guy moving a pallette of tissue paper will be able to tell you exactly where to find that artisan cheese you are looking for. They are always helpful and go out of their way to be of service. Even behind the scenes, you see them deal with one another with respect and dignity. You never get the feeling you are imposing on them with a question, they are kind and generous with their time across the board. HOW? People are all different, but they seem to attract the good ones at Costco. I guess the better pay has a lot to do with it, or maybe they just have pride in the amazing work they do.

I have both memberships and have had both for 2 years. I started out with the sams club membership and then later added Costco. I buy certain products at each store that I like and have found having both is really useful. For example I am on a low carb / keto diet. I typically get paper towels, toilet paper, avocado oil, coffee, and bai drinks from Sams. I buy my groceries from Costco because they have more organic, sugar free, low carb meat/grocery items for very reasonable prices. I also like the fact that Costco seems to continue to get new low carb/ grain free items like the Siete foods almond tortillas they are so good and Costco has them for half the price vs Walmart. I could go without either or if I absolutely needed too but having the entry level memberships equals almost the same as the prime Amazon membership which I plan on cancelling this year.

I actually think most Members Mark products ARE inferior. An example is Sams hearing aids (although sams makes them they are not branded members mark) are leagues inferior to Costco hearing aids (which are left to the experienced pros at the top six hearing aid manufacturers rather than trying to manufacture something on the cheap as complex as a hearing aid). Indeed, Costco worked out a deal with top hearing aid manufacturers and passes incredible savings on to the customer-so much so that it put many private practice audiologists out of business. They also do some mandatory testing during the eval that sams doesn’t. No, I don’t work for Costco but I am an audiologist. I had friends that worked in sams hearing aid dept a few years ago who were forced to work-hawking hearing aids-on Christmas Day during a blizzard here in Ohio. I too believe that treating your employees well and promoting from within your ranks leads to happy employees, very low turnover and customers pick up on this and I for one appreciate it. Don’t understand other comments that make Costco employees sound arrogant or indifferent-I truly haven’t experienced that. BTW I like Costco better, my wife likes sams better so we have both! Thanks for this Matt-super informative. I can see I’m going to need a notebook for your info-rich videos. Keep up the fab work.

@@robertcrabtree8835 3 years ago my guy got his hearing aids at Costco - it’s actually why we got a membership. He had gone to an audiologist and the price tag for a better (not best) hearing aid was not affordable for him. I did some research and found that Costco had Kirkland hearing aids that are made by good manufacturers like Phonak - at the time it was the same model that 2 years before was the top of the line model sold under the Phonak brand. The Costco manager said some stores have audiologist - at our store it has licensed hearing technicians and can do a hearing test (appointment needed). The hearing aids were like half as much money - and Costco had a better warranty too 3 years then. I don’t know what their current situation is Even though I was pretty sure I didn’t have hearing loss I’ve read that it’s useful to get a “baseline” around age 50 or so - and they were fine with doing a hearing test for me.

Great video, thank you! There are many Costco perks which were missed in this video though and perhaps some Sams Club perks were missed too. For instance, I've taken advantage of the Costco Travel program with insane savings on Hotels and Car Rentals, I've also ordered large appliances which were delivered and installed free. (these cost the same or more at other stores but without the delivery + install included).

Before we only had Sam's club. I have noticed that Sam's has stepped up their game to compete with Costco's new store coming in... that makes EVERYTHING better all the way around! They have cheap beer and Vodka too. Probably more booze than Sam's and you do not have to have them unlock a case. I bet you would find a big overlap with Amazon an Costco but also Walmart. The difference is the Costco probably uses prime unlike the Walmart customer. Also, I think the average Costco shopper does not care if it cost 50 cents less at Sam's Club since it is already half what a grocery store would charge. I doubt Sam's even carries many of the medium priced items Costco does. Yeah, you may pay $10 a pound for imported Picorino/Romano but it probably cost $30 or $40 at QFC. I understand if you can not afford such a cheese but most of the Costco customers are middle class just not lower class. Too me $100 in food is lot, and yeah, some Costco people spend $300 without blinking or buy a $2000 TV that I would never do. i sweat anything over $400-500 buck from any store. Yet, I see plenty of people picking up 2-8 items like I usually do. Having shopped there for a decade I think I know the client more than you do.

Where I think Sam's has an advantage from costco is that it is preferred by people with businesses. This isn't mentioned because it might be a small amount of us but Sam's club does offer much more business focused options where when I was researching both I got left with an impression that costco was more for home and personal shopping rather than what I was looking for which was a cheaper alternative to my wholesalers with a bigger selection for my mini market/convinience store.

On tech, I get an extra 2 years in my laptop warranty by using the Costco Visa on top of the 4% I get back (2% exec member +2% CC). Additionally, I used their mortgage services which saved me about $1,500 on closing costs. Every year there's usually 1-3 big purchases that make the membership worthwhile (ie, tech, tires, vacation, home improvement, etc.) On top of the high Costco quality products. Just my 2 cents...

Yuppers. Being perceived as a more upscale volume discount store, they do tend to find their way to higher income neighborhoods. Simple economics from market studies I would assume, but that leaves out anyone who isn’t close to those neighborhoods. Too far to travel for a lot of peeps, and they happily settle for Sam’s. As far as the wages, I do like that Costco pays their employees more, but let’s face it, the higher membership fees and costs for goods is what is really paying the salaries, i.e. - you are, as a member.

Let start out by stating that I’m a member of both Costco and San’s Club. I actually started my affiliation with Costco when it was Price Club in 1983. Later I was both a PC and Costco member until they merged into one company. I joined Sam’s in the 2000’s. I’ve been a member of both in CA, TX and now TN. I would argue that the beef at Costco in CA and TX were superior to Sam’s. However, here in West TN. Angus beef at Sam’s is superior to Costco by a wide margin. Interestingly, the beef sold at the Costco in West TN is not as good as the beef they sell in TX and CA (my opinion). A side note to pricing. In So CA where we lived there were multiple Costco stores to choose from. Interestingly, the variety of products each store carried varied and the same products in multiple stores were often priced differently from each other. So, in my mind it’s hard to compare cost between Sam’s and Costco when the price depends on which Costco store a person shop at. I have the preferred membership of both stores and one of the major differences is that I can actually get cash back (not store credit) at Costco. As far as I can tell, Sam’s only offers store credit. Also, I have Costco’s CITI bank credit card and I have the option of actual cash back or store credit. I think Sam’s M/C credit card is store credit back only (but not positive on that one). One great advantage to Sam’s is tire purchases. Unlike Costco, if one needs warranty work you have to go to a Costco store (that has a tire shop) for warranty work. If you buy tires at Sam’s you can go to any Sam’s or Walmart for warranty work. With a few exceptions, Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand product are exceptional in quality and value and in general better than the majority of Sam’s Members Mark products. The bakery goods at Costco are vastly superior to what is offered at Sam’s. For a person who has only shopped at Sam’s they would think that their bakery products are good. But once you’ve tried the same bakery good at Costco, chances are you’d never want to eat Sam’s bakery products again. One of the best Kirkland products that Costco sells is their bacon. It is smoked and salted to perfection. It has on more than one occasion selected/won as the best tasting bacon sold in the U.S. And since you are Canadian you might take comfort in knowing that Costco sources several of its signature products from Canada. My final comment is on employee attitude. I rarely found a Sam's club employee that seemed more than willing to help you. Costco employees seem to be more than happy to help. Almost every time I'm in a Costco and there is an employee nearby, they will stop what they are doing and ask if they can help you. At Sam's more often than not, they will turn and go the other way if they think you are approaching them for help.

Like you I have both memberships. However I tend to rarely shop at Sam's Club. Why? Because the experience there is always degrading. Their employees are rude and don't care for customers. They love long lines at Sam's Club - just like Walmart. Watch them do a check out. They seem to suffer from Tortoiseitis. Costco... they get you checked out before you even know it. Lines move fast. The mangers care at Costco and take care of any issue right away. Not saying Costco doesn't have issues, but unlike Sam's, the managers at Costco care. I agree on the Beef - Sam's Angus Beef is better. The only reason I keep Sam's Club membership is because Sam's carries some items such as spices that Costco does not carry. However I enjoy the Costco experience on cleanliness, customer support and service, quality of product, ease of return (Sam's - both of the ones near us - you get treated like a criminal for trying to return an item), knowledgeable employees willing to help (unlike Sam's where they could give the rat's you know what). Overall it's Costco for us.

Member of both too. Definitely agree that Kirkland products beat Members Mark hands down. Disagree heartily on bakery. Sam’s is better. Muffins are far superior, btw. And Sam’s rotisserie chicken tastes much better than Costco’s. But both have advantages, so we keep both.

I like Sam's Club scan and go - no waiting in long checkout lines. I like free shipping and more items available to ship for premium members. Curbside can be same day at Sam's sometimes. I do like Kirkland brands - some items can't get at Sam's but that goes both ways. The Costco was cleaner but further away so I didn't go as much and shipping was limited.

I just joined Costco, while retaining my Sam's membership. I'm frustrated that I can't check the in-store price on the website like I can on Sam's website. It's a guessing game what the price will be in the store, if you like to comparison shop.

My parents were some of the earliest Costco members and I grew up using them. They are my all time favorite store. The Kirkland brand products are the best. I had to shop at Sam's Club when we lived in Topeka as at the time there wasn't a Costco close by. I didn't hate it but also didn't have the same confidence in what I was getting. I was thrilled to get back to Costco when we moved again. Where we live now we have both close and even though Sam's Club is closer I still make the drive to Costco.

I really like the interesting content you put out though I live in Saskatchewan, Canada so I don't have a Sam's Club close to me that I'm aware of. I was spoiled by the quality of the meat at Costco when I was younger, I heard that Costco will refuse a shipment of meat if that shipment was not at an optimum temperature. I found the staff at any of the stores that I have been to have been pleasant and very helpful. That being said, when I am shopping I tend to pick where the best deal is on a lot of things, except produce that I'm not sure I'll use before it goes bad. Then I go to the local grocery store that has the best and freshest produce. From all I've heard I would probably shop both stores depending om what I was going for even if I had to wait in a long line up at either store. Just a side note, I have found if I go before lunch to Costco here, the lineups are quite short compared to between after school to closing

Very informative. Love your comparison list. Strictly based on my preferences (i.e., only for my shopping categories), Sam’s is better for me, only because the bulk of my Sam’s purchase is gas. I can get Premium (my car requires Mid Grade) at Sam’s for less than Regular at nearby gas stations. Comparing Sam’s Premium to Mid Grade, it can be as much as 40-50 cents or $5-7/tank full. 6-7 trips and my membership is paid.

I feel that Cosco is for " Target" shoppers as is Sam's Club is for "Walmart shoppers!! I live outside an area where there is only BJs (which super expensive compared to both) and is only 15 minutes from my home, as where Sam's is 35 minutes I have a Business membership for both. And this year I'm contemplating on getting a Cosco Veterans membership (that store is (50 minutes away) to compare products I already purchase and items that aren't offered in the other 2! Thanks for this video!

When shopping for any food at Sams Club, please watch the expiration date when purchasing. I have on several occasions picked up an item and it was well past the expiration date. The employees need to pay more attention to this

They do that at walmart also. Always check the dates on all food you buy. I watched as one employee just pushed back what was on the shelf and put the newer on the front. I guess they don't teach them about rotating.

I have always been a Sam’s member, mainly because there was never a Costco where I lived! Honestly I’ve never even been in a Costco store. I’m very pleased with the items I have purchased over the 20+ years I’ve been a member. I have been contemplating getting rid of my membership only because it’s just me at home now. Of course, I never have any problem filling my cart when I go!! Plus, I love the “scan and go” checkout app... I wish everybody had one!!

I have Sams but I'm thinking of getting both. I have not done the math but I'm sure if I was able to plan out my shopping I could make back all the money spent on the membership fees plus more and get everything I want. The problem with one or the other is there are still better deals for half the stuff you want at the other place. There are also items at one that are not available at the other. All I really know is, just on the money I save vs going to Price Chopper or Hy Vee, it makes it worth it. Just in booze purchases from Sams makes it worth it for me. Great video.
