I could swear that trials were done during the recent pandemic and there seemed to be an extremely strong correlation between vitamin D deficiency and a poor outcome 🤔Given that moving lock stock and barrel to a sunnier climate is not practical for most people, supplementing seems like a logical, cheap and efficient way to get the Vitamin D that is so vital for so many internal functions. I don't think I've ever met a doctor yet that hasn't advised supplementation, until now, for those of us that simply can't get enough sun exposure regularly.

Not 'prospective studies.' The higher D patients did better with the vid than the lower D patients, as I understand it. Draw your own conclusions.
@defeqel6537
@defeqel6537 7 месяцев назад
There were studies that showed that after hospitalization vitamin D didn't help, but seeing how virus infections tend to lower it, it might be a good idea to have a good baseline. This also depends on where you live; here in the Polar regions we don't really see the sun for 5 months a year when having an office job. Mostly, I've seen no study to show demerits to vitamin D supplementation, even up to 100 000 IU /day, though 4 000 IU /day is probably enough for most adults.

You also have to consider the fact that people don't convert well. People have a hard time converting D2 to D3 that's why supplementation is so helpful and successful. I know at least a handful of people in my life that spend a lot of their times outdoors and we're still deficient and did not even use sunscreen. There's more to the story than meets the eye.

I love your videos, and I love Dr Eckbergs videos as well, he does tend to speak in generalities and avoids diving too deep in the science (similar to Dr Berg) but I have found that his style has such a straightforward, almost hypnotic way about it that makes it easy to follow for a lay person…he also avoids hyperbole and corporate sponsorship which also adds to his popularity, and is always a plus

I really enjoy your Reacts series. As many others have said, I watch Dr. Ekberg and think highly of him. And, I agree with him on testing Vit. D and making sure your levels aren't low. I also support retesting at different times of the year and if supplementation changes are made. That way you don't get too high. I think you need to exercise (walking) outside in the sun and without sunglasses and sunscreen on to have a good Vit. D level. A whole foods diet is great, but it's not the whole story. Outside time is important for Vit. D and circadian rhythm too. Maybe do just a bit more research on what Vit. D studies are really out there. Dr. Campbell did report on several studies during the C time. I'm sure sometimes you have appreciated anecdotal reports on keto...kindof the same with Vit. D. As a breast cancer survivor, I aim for a level of 70 (US).

When farmers have to use tons of fertilizer to supposedly enrich the soil, and there have been studies regarding mineral deficiency in vegetables, then that supports the fact our current food supplies do not contain enough vitamins and minerals. I myself take a high dose of vit D. I love Dr Westman, I am on his prescription keto regimen, I have currently lost 40 lb, so he’s the man! The main message is that low serum vitamin d status is found in all kinds of chronic ailments. So, any RCT would have to run for 20 to 30 years taking several thousand people with low status and give a quarter vit D3, a quarter Vit D3 plus Vit K2 and a quarter Vit D3 plus Vit K2 and Magnesium, then see who gets what, or not, and who lives longest. There's no money in Vit/mineral supplements, so the only organisation (other than governments) who could run such a trial is Big Pharma, and they do not want to find any success in this arena as this might stop the need for their products. So, the best bet is to study a random range of 70 to 80 year olds by checking their serum Vit D levels, and check cancer, MI, and all cause mortality against the levels. If more of these is found with low levels, then we can move serum testing and supplementation into mainstream. This could yield some results within 5 years, rather than 10 to 20 years with an RCT.
@AbacusincInfo
@AbacusincInfo 7 месяцев назад
Another thing is getting the dose right in the studies. What doses are the studies using?
@peterholt4806
@peterholt4806 7 месяцев назад
@@AbacusincInfo Ideally, you would measure serum levels and adjust accordingly. You make a fair point though. In "trials" in the past (showing zero efficacy of all vitamins,) the doses have been very low. Almost like they've been set up to fail. If the people in the trial had low serum levels, I'd start with 10,000 iu per day for a month and then drop to 6,000 but, of course, I'm just plucking numbers randomly from thin air. I'd be guided by the YT doctors who could come up with a better regimen.

I have similar experiences. Years ago I got many strange and worrying symptoms when I ate a little more sugar or carbohydrates than a modest amount. Doctors said that there was nothing wrong with my laboratory results. They even suggested that I may suffer from panic attacks. Well, starting to use 250 microgrammes of vitamin D a day took the symptoms away in about two days, and they never came back (except in mild form if I happen to eat a LOT of sugar in one day, which I of course avoid nowadays). I also find the claim by Dr. Westman that there are very little high-quality studies of the benefits of vitamin D. I personally have seen several of them only on the benefits for the immune system. I wonder what is it with most trained doctors that they are so irrationally, seemingly in principle, against supplements, when there's ample evidence for the benefits of supplementing with many nutrients that we don't get enough from food.

Dr. Westman said he was going to tell us about vitamin D toxicity but said nothing about it. The fact that he works In an academic institution makes a huge statement. These institutions will not study and promote supplements as they cannot make money off of them. Which is why big pharma will not endorse supplements. No money to be made. Similarly, sun exposure is also critical in delivering infra red to the mitochondria. I place a lot of value on what people like Dr Joel Gould has to say. NP here. I check most patients d oh level, discuss sun exposure, and prescribe d3 replacement. I find that if patients are in the 20s with their level 2000 iu early in the day with food will get their numbers the normal range. I have had about 25% of folks with levels around 10 and prescribe 50000 iu weekly for 8-12 weeks, and require a lab for a refill. Most people do not get sunlight exposure between 11-2 daily. Also have patients with CKD or obesity with low D levels. Have had one patient with hyperparathyroidism that developed d toxicity (nausea and vomiting). She was taking crazy high doses of d3 because she was worried about COVID 19 that I did not prescribe. I am shocked at Dr. Westman’s approach as he advocates for a ketogenic diet which has not been widely studied either. Furthermore, I find it concerning that dr. Westman doesn’t seem to understand that vitamin D3 disrupts, melatonin production, which promotes daytime wakefulness and seems to think that dietary vitamin d intake is adequate. 🤔

I have a high regard for both. Dr Westman can sometimes be a little glib though. Dr Joel Gould, Dr Holick and others do present a load of studies on Vitamin D. There are of course further issues in terms of whether vitamin D should be from the sun or supplements, and whether some of the benefits associated with vitamin D come from other benefits of sunlight. In terms of bone health, the benefits of vitamin D also depend heavily on vitamin K2 and on protein intake.

Thank You Dr. Westman for a valuable discussion on an important topic. 😊 👍 IMO, one of the MOST CONVINCING concepts I have seen on this Vit-D topic is: everyone should have their Vit-D level BLOOD TESTED. IF - your level is low it would probably be Wise and Harmless to begin taking daily D-3 Supplements daily for a few months and then RETEST the blood level to actually LEARN HOW these SUPPLEMENTS are performing in your INDIVIDUAL body... Conclusion, Is "low" Vit-D Harmful...? PROBABLY. Will taking SUPPLEMENTAL Pills be a benefit...? Only periodic testing can answer that... -StayWellEveryone... -70SomethingGuy

Anyone north of the Mason Dixon line here in the US is vitamin D deficient because we just don't get enough sunlight. Many people south can be deficient due to the use of sunblock lotions. I don't think that you're going to get good randomized trials in the US. Have you tried looking for information outside of the US where BIG Pharm isn't in charge? I was surprised a few years ago watching on a channel of Poland on streaming where they actually were advertising vitamin D on their news station. It wasn't a particular brand either. You would NEVER see anything like that here in the US. BIG Pharma can't make money off of it. I just had mine tested recently and was low. I think it's so much more than just getting it through your food. I encourage you , Dr. Westman, to research more on this important vitamin( hormone), and maybe through research done in other countries that aren't the US.

We take vitamin D in northern areas in the winter because, with all the layers of clothing to keep warm, we are not exposed to the sun very much in winter. Our grandparents took cod liver oil all winter. Thank goodness I missed that generation. I continue to take vitamin D in winter. My doctor noticed an increased level of D in my lab work and told me to cut back the amount. We heard a lot of talk about Covid and the increased morbidity in the Chinese population versus American. It was suggested that decreased levels of D compared to Americans played a major role in the severity of the disease. I don't get colds and flu, though I did get a mild case of Covid for two miserable days. At 78 years of age and an overweight diabetic, Covid was supposed to be dangerous. I attribute my resistance to colds and flu to a basically healthy diet and regular intake of vitamin D.

Paul Mason has a theory that vitamin D is mostly a downstream indicator of proper cholesterol levels which he believes is the main thing promoting health and the reason vitamin D increases with sun exposure is it acts as a natural skin protection or screen. Interestingly those who do keto and carnivore usually find they can withstand much more sun exposure. I know I can despite being very light skinned. It's an interesting theory worth listening to his lecture on.

The problem is, you're never going to get that prospective study because no one will fund it, as you can't patent vitamin D. We only get large scale intervention studies, when there is a drug to be sold at the end of it. So while maybe a doctor shouldn't prescribe it, as an individual given it doesn't appear to be especially dangerous when approached conservatively, we may want to try it and see if things improve, or not, for us specifically.

I can understand this perspective. No one funded research on the Atkins Diet until I asked Dr. Atkins for funding to do one at Duke. Purveyors of vitamin D supplements certainly could fund a study if they had to. Because there are 'no claims', these supplement companies can fly below the FDA approval radar. Sorry, but the inability to do studies does not prove that it works.

I appreciate your perspective however, I’m with Dr. Ekberg, from my own experience and research. Vitamin D is tremendously antiinflammatory because it is a partial agonist of TRPV1 and blocks complete agonists of TRPV1 that can help stop central nervous system seizures and hippocampal neuron damage, also D genetically causes production of proteins critical for the balance of many aspects of our health. This is seen as it helps combat excessive bone breakdown by interfering with the RANKL reaction, helps decrease Schwann cell lesions in multiple sclerosis shown in a phase 3 study of ms patients, on and on. Unless a person has a genetic mutation that compromises metabolism of vitamin D then it is safe to take high doses of D. I have an autoimmune disease and am at my best taking 10,000 i.u. 3 to 4 times/day, for years. My highest D level was 350, my blood calcium was normal and no excess urinary calcium in 24 hour urine test, no calcification of soft tissues, I do also take K2 Mk-7 shown to prevent arterial calcification and I have been doing great! Epileptic patients refractile to medication were shown in studies to have reduced seizures by 25% just taking 10,000 i.u./day. Big pharma will not pay for the studies you want because they cannot profit from the information. Giving a bolus of 50,000-60,000 i.u. does not work as we saw in covid, it must be through the day, day after day as D helps T-cell function esp important for older people with waning T-cell function, the first layer of immune protection after innate immunity that covid easily surpasses. Obese patients are more likely to be deficient in D because active D is quickly converted to inactive storage D in adipose tissue. To be honest you should be extra concerned about that for your patients. PCOS patients have typically obesity and metabolic syndrome . Glucose stimulates TRPV1 that stimulates glp-1 that stimulates TRPV1 (again) that causes insulin secretion -> hypersulinemia-> more TRPV1 and insulin like growth factor 1 and both -> polycystic ovaries. When TRPV1 is too high it causes the disassembly of tubulin in microtubules in primary cilium on cell membranes that inactivated polycystin 2(TRPP1) needed to protect cells/tissues from out pouching-> cysts. So controlling TRPV1 with D is most helpful unless a drug or other agonist overrides D. Vitamin A is important to take with D because both use the same RXR receptor on the nuclear membrane.

You don't think you should test for Vit-D? Probably good since most D (according to the science videos I have seen) say it's not in the blood, but mostly in the cells. It may help to test the blood for some indication, so I'll defer, but not because Medical Schools didn't recommend it or teach about it to you. The Medical Schools and governments are obviously some 50 years out-of-date on a lot of nutritional health topics, and, so, many doctors would rather treat symptoms rather than try healing the CAUSE; e.g., the out-of-date Food Pyramid, My Plate, and what not. Even my Doc-In-Box (he's 50 something) was clueless about what is good about the HOMA-IR and C-Peptide tests for people with metabolic syndrome or prediabetic, there is no excuse for than in my view.
