My dad suffered from cluster headaches in the 90s. Back then there were so few people with the diagnosis. He was part of many studies, trials, and experimental procedures. Very few meds worked, and they lost potency quickly. It was traumatic seeing him suffer for years with these headaches. At the end of his life, he was having 3-4 attacks every day that would last a few hours. I sincerely hope the many weekends we spent at the Cleveland Clinic where he was studied and given every treatment under the sun (including acupuncture, drilling a hole in his head, and more) helped people down the line and helped scientists develop ways to relieve the pain. I think the level 10 pain of these is often overlooked and not emphasized enough with by the medical world.

I think the reason he called cluster headaches one of the deadliest headache diseases is not because the headache itself is life-threatening, but because so many people who suffer with them take their own lives. That’s why they have the nickname “suicide headaches.” Maybe this gets addressed later in the video, but I had to stop and comment about this. Diseases like depression and cluster headaches that don’t directly kill but rather drive people in high numbers to take their own lives…THOSE DISEASES ARE STILL DEADLY! This! When i was first diagnosed, my doctor called it a "Suicide Headache" and said that it is often considered the worst pain a human can experience. Doctors can be pretty dramatic at times haha. But he also explained that the reasoning behind this, is that before it was understood, often times people who would get Cluster Headaches would off themselves because of a mix between the chronic debilitating pain and the depression that it has caused.

From the 1800's (at least) into the 1900's there was a fair rash of people rumored to be "self treating" the legendary "suicide headaches" with Laudanum and liquor, often Absinthe. A few noteworthy celebrities even died of overdoses and seemed to bring attention to the opiate issues of the day. There are still some legends and rumors about who was only trying their best to contend with the agony of cluster headaches, who might've had some other chronic pain, and who actually outright chose that stuff as a means to suicide. ;o)

As a licensed mental health professional myself, I very much appreciate Dr. Mike addressing the relationship between mental and physical health, specifically when it comes to pain. I hear many stories from clients', especially those of minority groups, whose pain is not seen, believed or taken seriously by professionals when in most cases, the discomfort is incredibly real, but may not be coming from the source described by patient. Taking that extra step to consider mental health (ex: how anxiety and panic can sometimes impact chest tightness), can be so validating and necessary in treatment. Wishing ishowspeed relief😊 great video!

@jq206
@jq206 Год назад
@sebastianchavarria4976 tbh, i am not able to Funktion at all whatsoever. I for instance have chronic migraine with aura. The "aura" part are different types of symptoms aside from the pain. Light sensitivity, noise sensitivity, body aches, nausea, vomiting, etc. Getting up to make food is a almost impossible act itself let alone working out. When the attack settles, falling asleep is almost a instant reaction because it takes such a toll on your body. A lot of people fall into desperation and "overmedicate" with pain medicine, which can also induce constant headache. So a lot of times you have to just sit it out. But when the episodes are over, working out (cardio) is something that can help to reduce the intensity and amount of episodes you go through depending on the triggers.

I would disagree that it is 'not lethal' the percentage of suicides directly as a result of clusters is very high. I have chronic clusters, I have had kidney stones and would pass one a day instead of these, people who have had traumatic amputations, been shot, childbirth have all said clusters are worse. @Mizumii25

it's sad that they really do. You can get headaches where it's just a simple ache were a bit of sound or light might bug you but you can deal with it. Or they can get so bad that you go to the ER because of it, just like in this video. There's an entire massive range in between. Most only experience the lighter ones so a lot of people are just told to "brush it off" or "deal with it" when sometimes that's not even possible. Health standards in the public lately have gotten so bad that unless someone is visibly showing severe issues like a heart attack, a stroke, blacking out, etc then we're just told to "suck it up" and everyone's pain tolerance is a different level.

@@idorion9096 That's what a good chunk of people that experience them hope for. But at the same time, without the other side experiencing a headache of any kind and strength, we look weak or useless or lazy to them. It's even worse for people who suffer Chronic Headaches or Headaches as the result of a condition like myself. I don't wish the pain on anyone. Especially when it gets really really bad. But at the same time, if my boss has never experienced a headache in their life and doesn't really care about their staff, they won't understand why i'm in the ER or Urgent Care with a headache. And then those that DO experience them but the strength is so weak, when those are in the same space and mindset as the boss, it's all "oh i get them all the time and they're not an issue. just walk it off." but those with stronger headaches can't. Plus everyone's pain tolerance is different so that makes it even more difficult.

I was diagnosed with episodic migraines when I was 8 years old (I’m in my 40s now, so dealing with this for a while), though I suspect many of my attacks were cluster headaches. I remember one of my attacks, specifically, while I was working as an inventory auditor in the middle of a retail store, and had to immediately end working for the day and get to a quiet and dark space, but I felt like something sharp was being pressed into my head and struggled so much to tell my manager. I’m glad you brought up the mental health side of this condition. Depression was a frequent experience in relation to my headaches, and I’ve had suicidal thoughts during persistent attacks because the pulsating pain just would not stop. I’ve developed some pretty good strategies for dealing with them, even when medication doesn’t seem to be working. I’ve learned some of my triggering patterns (which, unfortunately, are unavoidable as they’re environmental). But yeah, these things suck, and they can shut you down. And it can be scary when you don’t know what’s going on.

The problem comes when a person is continuously getting them. My mother once had a migraine that lasted two days. My sister had to drop out of public school because her migraines were making it impossible for her to focus. That's chronic migraines, which my mother and sister have both been diagnosed with. I don't know about cluster headaches, but if they work the same way, it could have just been a one time thing. The people saying they come back and there's no cure are likely experiencing chronic cluster headaches, which is a different case than a regular cluster headache. I've been watching Speed ever since and now finally all the things he did are paying off but hope he feels better! Speed regardless of his health is so egar to start playing games again and talk with his fans on stream. I mean he did soooo many things that caused an injury. He bit his lip when he crashed his car in a game, pierced his own nose, ate some really spicy things that caused him a severe stomachache and much more. What a warrior. Praying for him 🙏

I used to work with a woman who had chronic cluster headaches. She had surgery for it multiple times and was in the hospital for weeks at a time. Eventually, she was able to go a few months at a time without headaches from ketamine infusions. I still think it is one of the wildest treatments I've heard of but makes a world of a difference for her even if she has to travel hours to get to the hospital that gives them. Edit: As a chronic migraine sufferer I'm glad I don't have cluster headaches. Sure I get nausea, can't be in any light, and sometimes have visual hallucinations before an attack...but still cluster headaches seem wildly horrific.
