Michael Jordan came out of retirement for the second time in 2001, joining a Washington Wizards team that was...pretty bad. The team was not going anywhere while Jordan was the president of basketball operations. When he decided to return as a player, his relationship with the Wizards only got worse, and he ended up not getting his job back in the front office. Hope you enjoy the video!

People forget but during the first half of the first season with the Wizards he was a legit mvp candidate. But his body broke down finally and his knees pretty much gave up on him and Jordan was pretty much playing hobbled the rest of the time but still managed to drop a couple of 40pts games and a 50+ game. And don't forget that chase down block on Ron Mercer. Yah, it was tough to see MJ almost seem mortal but he did show us how much of a freak he was with the stuff he was able to do at his age.
@JamesCH08
@JamesCH08 6 лет назад
286mic FACTS, IDK why people forgot how much of an impact he had when he returned the last time. This version of Mike is what Kobe modeled his game after when he got older (footwork & jumpers). An if you remember Kobe was still effective, it was injuries that stopped Kobe and a bad team. Exactly what stopped M.J., he was really close to getting them into the playoffs his final year there, he said allot of players didn't have the drive, or motivation, which stopped them from winning. To many young, and ridiculously rich players, with a feeling that they were too good to really play scrappy and compete.

I watched another well done video that puts into perspective Jordan's stint with the Wizards that didn't compare him to his prime when he was playing for the bulls. His numbers would only be called "unspectacular" if you are comparing him to his former self. Compare Jordan's numbers with other all star/hall of famers his age and you begin to realize that what he did with the wizards was definitely remarkable. Also take into account where the team was before he came in, and where they got to before he blew out his knee. I understand the direction of this video and I learned a lot I didn't know from it. But I think you need a lot better perspective when critiquing his production.

In fact, if you compare his numbers with other all star of the time; he is very good. Until his knee injury in 2002, he was a MVP candidate and was averaging 25-6-5 in 46 games. That's very good, no matter the age.
@danielgalea
@danielgalea 6 лет назад
The Wizard stint only proved to me how great he was. At 40 he was going head to head with the games best players and wasn't really inferior. Sometimes they got the better of him (Kobe and Mcgrady both had 40 or 50 point games on him) but sometimes he got the best of others (I remember him outplaying Paul Pierce and Vince Carter a few times). Least I forget the All star game where he came up clutch and hit the fadeaway of a top 3 wing defender in the game, Shawn Marion. 40 year old MJ did alot better than 38 year old Shaq, 39 year old Duncan, 40 year old Malone, 40 year old Kareem, 36 year old Magic, 40 year old Jason Kidd and even 37 year old Kobe Bryant. The list goes on, you won't name a player aged 38 or over who played better. Even today, he was light years better than Dirk, Vince Carter, Manu Ginobli are now. No embrassment at all.
@chrisgrudge6964
@chrisgrudge6964 6 лет назад
danielgalea that just isn’t true unless you just measure players by their ppg. Players like tim Duncan, Karl Malone and Kareem were far more useful in their later years than Jordan. Jordan couldn’t play defense, has less passing ability and was really inefficient during his time on the wizards. Championship teams can’t use players like 40 year old Jordan.
@HailKingCeezer
@HailKingCeezer 6 лет назад
lol that's a first. MJ couldn't play defense with the Wizards? He was still excellent. He defended SF's. He had a 3.4 DWS at 40 and the Wizards were bottom defense without him and a top defense with him. At 38/39 his passing/ AST % was the 2nd highest of his career.

Jordan’s time with the Wizards was definitely impressive considering his age. And before he went down with that injury he was carrying the wizards into playoff contention. I believe before the injury, he wizards had become a top 5 team defensively and offensively. Once he got injured the team crumbled. The next year was not a great, but Jordan’s numbers were still comparable to a lot of young players who would go on to become all stars and all nba level players. His time with the wizards was definitely impressive, and is incredibly underrated. If you really look into Jordan’s time as a player there, and his influence, he never stopped being a baller.

MJ made players of a certain mentality better, though mostly it was out of fear lol It reminds me of current day Jimmy Butler. On the right team players respond to his demands that they try to match his level of intensity and work ethic, but many players (such as KAT and Wiggins) respond very poorly to that kind of pressure.
@OjoRojo40
@OjoRojo40 4 года назад
@@ValensBellator He made his teammates worst specially during his first years in the league, were he was averaging incredible numbers but winning nothing. It took him to get paired with already mature players like Grant, Pippen, and later Rodman and Harper to win all that he did.

Jordan should've never traded Rip for Stackhouse. He thought Stack was a go to #1 option. He wasn't. Rip was a more efficient scorer who didn't need to dominate the ball

I grew up In the DC area and remember seeing Mike play for the wizards. Being a young Kid from DC seeing your favorite player the Goat MJ play on your favorite team. The feeling was crazy. And he still dropped 20 a game and made an all star team crazy! Will always remember those times. Gotta get a MJ wizards jersey. and from that time we got the 16s 17s and 18s some of the greatest jordans of all time especially in the wizards color way

As a lifelong Bullets/Wizards fan. One of the most exciting times during my fandom, was when we first hired MJ as President of Basketball Operations.. and then I became Uber excited, when he announced he was coming outta retirement, to play with them. I admit, his last comeback wasn't as great as the rest of his career.. but the brotha still was a very effective player. And still a top 10 player at his position. Which is great, relative to his age, and time off he took off from the sport. And that's all folks..

I honestly didn't think it was a mistake for him to come back, if anything it shows how much he loves the game. It also gave us some fantastic moments. I remember I was watching a game with my mom and they got some miracle last moment winning shot (I think it was Ric, but I don't quite remember who was) and she was all happy because she was still watching the hero of her youth playing some high level basketball. Sure his come back wasn't anything special in the big scheme of things but it was really nice to see Michael Jordan play for a couple of years more.

Man if your a mj fan like I am then we definitely have to accept this as part of his legacy and if your really a mj fan then you know exactly how mj is and his personality and mindset. He could be 50 and still think that he can play ball right now in the nba that’s just the way he’s wired but it don’t matter it’s all about context and mj fans didn’t expect him to be the mj of old like frfr but hey it was just good to see him out there either way he’s the 🐐 what more can you ask for!

What he failed to say was that the Wizards was a playoff team halfway through the 2001-2002 season and Jordan was putting up numbers like he was in his prime. Then thanks to Jared Jeffries, MJ injured his knee and that totally derailed his season and time with the Wizards. Oh and don't forget he still averaged over 20 a game and had two more all star appearances. So it wasn't a total waste of time.
