I've changed systems several times during a 45 year photographic career, and find myself having returned to MFT for a third time. It's just so lightweight and user friendly. I think I'll be sticking with it now 😏🤗. I love the lumix menu system, and I can use lenses on it that I've owned for five minutes or fifty years.

We sadly cannot get Lumix in South Africa now. The big stores moved the relatively small market to FF and even MF. Easier to get a Hasselblad than a Lumix now. I am researching the OM-1 for retirement hobby. We shoot wildlife and that 150 400 will give me over 1000mm with 1.4x tc. Lions don't brush, stay clear 🙃🇿🇦

The "best" camera format and lens selection depends on what the photographer is shooting, their budget, and other variables. A professional who sells huge photos of landscapes probably prefers full frame or larger format. A sports photographer wants great focus tracking and high speed shooting. Many wildlife photographers appreciate the weight of micro four thirds gear. Seniors appreciate lighter gear like micro four thirds as well. APS-C is a viable middle path for many.

Just found this channel and I own a lot of MFT gear and felt compelled to switch to FF or APS-C and did go to Sony. However, I still find myself going back to MFT for the portability. Not to mention the investment in the lenses which I can’t bring myself to sell. Great conversation here and still relevant 4 years later.

Can't help but agree with what is being said in theis video. I shoot wildlife exclusively and have used two cameras in tandem (mainly one fitted with a macro lens and the other with a long telephote or zoom lens). I currently own a Sony A7R4 and an Olympus EM1X. Previously, I owned a Nikon D500 and Oly EM 1 mark II. Before that I owned 2 x EM1 bodies. Works for me.

Excellent intelligent conversation on the Micro Four Thirds system. The Olympus EM5 and EM1 when combined with their Pro series lenses is perhaps the best option for anyone who shoots outdoors or wants a truly portable lightweight system and thats before getting into the picture quality of these cameras. It does have some drawbacks but nothing an experienced photographer can't solve by using the basic of exposure, shutter speed and the appropriate lenses

For many types of photography the supposedly superior low light performance of full frame is illusory - we have to remember that for a fixed depth of field a micro 4/3 camera will be operating at two stops numerically smaller f-stop and ISO than a full frame camera.

I noticed for video a bigger sensor in bright light is harder to tame or get a good exposure i have a sony a6000 and a panasonic g7 i havnt touched the sony in almost a year why spend extra money on bigger sensors just to spend more money on darker nd filters . And the lenses on bigger sensor cameras are so expensive. Is it really worth all that money just to post videos on RU-vid?The bigger sensors would be more suited for night photography and video. There is a slighty more crop with the g7 though.

It's horses for courses, if your going to shoot wildlife from a huge distance micro four thirds might not cut the mustard but for reportage and street photography they are ideal. I hate the term "Micro 4/3" It is still 4/3 format just using a smaller camera ! I swapped from Nikon APS-C and Full Frame to Olympus simply for the weight saving and have never looked back. That's an old hate to carry around. Four-Thirds itself was/is a pretty lame name - based on ancient Imperial units for video camera vacuum tube sensors. Tacking on "Micro" is just marketing, and the MFT mount matters more than the common sensor size of the failed Four-Thirds system.

Y’all are helping me I have bought in to 5 systems, looking for the perfect camera.and a camera that helps me create also easy for me to understand and use. I am in the process of eliminating some of this. First one I listed on eBay this week was the big z9, painful but it was my lesed favorite .this is really hard turning lose of this camera that I should love, now On the nikon side of this I still have the z62 and the zf which I have most of the best z lens, then canon will mostly be next to go only have 2 lens the 28-20 f2 and the 24-105 and the body is r62, and it gets harder now I am left with the om1 which is a top contender, then is the Fuji x5, then Sony a1 will most likely stay forever because of the economics it just fits my hand. Well, I know what all the buttons are gonna do. I’m not fidgeting with it all the time like a monkey with the football.

6:27 and less dynamic range. However, these days it's not AS bad, but still not as much DR as you'd get with a full frame camera that has a good sensor (Sony/Nikon). The GH5 has around 13 for DR and that's close to many recent Canon FF cameras and even better than certain Canon cameras). I shoot both m4/3 (G95 now, but previously G9 and GH5) as well as a Nikon Z7. I do love m4/3 for some things, but the raw files just can't stand up to much abuse in editing...even 'medium' abuse like lifting the exposure or shadows 1 stop. You'll get a lot more artifacts much quicker than you would if you start beating on a FF Nikon Z7 file in editing. If m4/3 could come out with a sensor that has a little over 14 stops or DR, great high ISO and files that don't fall apart too easily in editing, I'd totally be willing to switch over to m4/3 completely because the extra depth of field is actually a benefit for me.

@Hooeked and Steve: If that was true, the photography of the past, of the film era, would never exist. The dynamic range of captured light depends on how you control the light. If you can't control the light, nor have the will to understand how the light is used, controlled and manipulated, then the photography is no good hobby nor a profession for you. Your inability and bias made from the inability will only impede others who listen to such unfounded opinions.

@@stevestruthers6180 Regardless, it is the amateurs who have little experience about photography, and even less about light control, who invest in cameras but not in light manipulating equipment and so on, who object regularly about the dynamic range as "not being good enough for them". It is a disputable and circular argument based in the technology of the moment (because today's M43 cameras have better dynamic range than yesterday's FF or MF cameras), which only confirms they are new to the hobby and have no means to improve skills in photography outside of their camera boxes.

You don’t need a super fast aperture for great bokeh. See this for yourself and experiment with distances from subject to background and camera to subject. Also, lenses with longer focal lengths are often the better choice. In any case, depth of field can be too shallow when lenses are wide open, so stopping down will often be necessary, anyway. I do a fair amount of macro photography and I often find f8, or sometimes even smaller apertures, are needed so that what I want in focus is in focus. Best results are with the camera relatively close to the subject, with relative distance from subject to the background. That’s also true for shots other than macro, including bird photography. I have taken many, many shots with enviable bokeh. Easy peasy.

I use cameras with different sensor sizes depending on my needs but I don't make dumb claims because FF IQ is simply Superior and that cannot be argued. And yeah, while i love the low light performance. I really don’t like a lot of other things about the camera. It’s far too heavy, the nicer lenses are also heavy. I hated taking it with me on a trip, my camera bag was so much heavier, than it was when i had an APS-C sensor. Nicer 1.4 lenses also have much less depth of field, you think, oh, that will be good for bokeh. But it wasn’t really for how i shoot, i ended up with such a shallow focus, i don’t like the images coming out of it unless i stop way down a bunch to 2 or 3(i could maybe get a centimeter in focus, like half an eyeball or just the tip of the nose). I recently tried a much smaller epl9 camera. A relatively inexpensive camera, that was much smaller that i could take with me everywhere. And i have taken some of the best photos recently with that smaller 4/3rds camera. It impressed me so much with the size of it and the quality of photos, that i am selling my Pentax gear, there’s more wrong with Pentax full frame than just the weight, a lot of the old lenses are still screw drive. And noisy and slow to focus. Focus doesn’t nail it on this full frame camera either.

I use Olympus and Fuji...We had a person using light sticks and I had the Olympus ...Another photographer had the Fuji XHI and another person with a Nikon Z7 and we all gave up because the EVF's went nuts. The guy with the Nikon D850 of course could see and compose. In heavy sunlight you can have problems with the EVF's too!

I was a little disappointed on the apparently unbiased talk when it was said that “the image quality of 20 MP [m43 sensor] is fantastic”: I have just returned a Pana GX9 because it’s RAWs were virtually indistinguishable from the ones turned out by my 16 MP Oly E-M10 mk3, using same 12-40/2.8 Pro and software. I have Fuji and Nikon too, and present 20 MP sensor/processing used by m43 is far from “fantastic”, IMHO, reminding me of early times when it was said that m43 was similar to FF...

That 20mm f/1.7 is fantastic? Really? I'd have time to boil an egg in the time it tries to lock auto-focus (and DfD doesn't seem to help either). And when shooting video the camera refuses to even enter AF-C or AF-F modes with this lens, because even the camera knows how awful the focusing is with it.

Wow... that's hilarious Marcus. I LOL'ed when I read that "boiling an egg" thing.

F/1.8 on an MFT is F/3.6 on Full frame for light gathered. To get a real full frame equivalent f/1.8 lens, you're going to need an f/0.9. You can do it with speed boosters and bigger lenses, but they're bigger.

Just one question, what you do when companies stop making m43 camera? :) it’s not about the size, it’s about the sensor technology. When FF become mainstream, which it’s happening soon, you think people will pay the same money for a m43?? No way.

I've had full frame and ditched it. Too heavy and I can print just fine with half the megapixels. I can fit my G9 with excellent Panasonic - Leica lenses into half the space, throw my GX85 into a pocket for street and candid work, and still fit it all under an airplane seat. The format isn't going anywhere.

Lenses as compact as for example the Panasonic Lieca 50-200 & 100-400 have no equivalent in FF for lack of size. I have Nikon FF & Fuji APS-C & they are massive. So there will always be a m4/3 camera.

@@Vaptomwen Always be m4/3? Are you so sure Panasonic and Olympus will survive the with smaller sales. Dropping sales an industry problem not just theirs. Olympus camera division is losing money and currently doesn't see profitability in future any time soon. It survives because camera R&D is used in their other profitable divisions. How much of their R&D monies did Panasonic spend on their FF cameras? I've read reviews of it being the best mirror-less FF camera, but they are not selling. How much R&D do you think Sony is spending on m4/3 sensors? I would imagine practical none and getting their improvements from trickle down tech from other sensors. Sony is probably crapping too, they spent a lot on R&D to bring their cameras to the top and they wont see the sales they envisioned when they started. Unfortunately there will be more camera companies dropping out of the market. I'm guessing Pentax will be the next. What was the last significant camera Pentax came out with?

Rick Allen Olympus & Panasonic have lost money most years with exceptions after the GH4 for example, Fuji has never as far as I know ever made a profit but has huge income from it instant camera & consumables film & Canon might be joining them in that. Fuji is the only brand to ever really do anything for APS C , Sony doesn’t especially in lenses doing what Nikon & Canon did. Sony have dropped or sold product lines before & they don’t make sensors for Panasonic or Nikon anymore & Canon were being made by Toshiba prior to Sony takeover & I believe is spending big on their own production & design their own. The m43 camp have allowed most You Tubers go for to long with the IQ & depth of field argument, DOF was not in the past an obsession & IQ is more than enough for most consumers & with IBIS can produce very good low light shots & far more portable. The m43 sensor is larger than what many TV & professional video cameras use. Panasonic has a very easy to use UI . M43 should be killing it ,but doesn’t , marketing failure? Watch just about any You Tube review they only get excited about Sony & with anything crop especially m43 they struggle & usually you always know what’s coming, IQ sensor resolution & yet quite often some shoot those videos with an m43 camera. Sales maybe declining but nobody is going out anytime soon. Nikon z6 May out sell the Z7 & the system maybe slow , however many can’t simply turn around so soon after the phenomenal D850 & go mirrorless Z7 especially. Canon the EOS R outsells the RP & the best lens system start to date. We shall see....

Micro 4/3 sensors will never have the Dynamic Range of a full frame sensor. People went through the same shit with film. Smaller negatives never produced the same as 35mm or 120mm film.

That's only true for top of the line FF-sensors. Current M43-sensors surpass the DR of e.g. a Canon 5DIII or the 1Dx. Good enough for me.

It’s not the truth. It’s enough for what you do, but it’s a no go for a lot of pro photographers. The limitations are to much. Not just low light and focus.

Hey Wang, are you saying that you are one of the pros that find m43 format cameras too limiting to produce high quality professional results? I checked out the vids on your page. Nice works. However please support your professional opinion by pointing out which of those works on your page could not have been produced to the same quality level by even a 5 yr old GH4 please? Thanks.

Would this video come from others persons, my words would be the same... so don't ever think about them as personaly targeted. You state art is everything. Agreed. Then you spend much of the video speaking about gear, but not globaly... just one camera, one lens, the another camera, then a bundle, etc. So... where's art ? All cameras can produce images... even a shoebox, with the proper pinhole in it can do wonders. My first steps into photography were due to my father, an immense journalist (and clever guy) who offered me a "camera" when I turned 6. All made of plastic, with the exception of hinges (not sure though), and sending back that horrible "hollow" sound you never want to hear from any of your gear piece. That makes me laugh still today ! Only thing I can remember name-wise was "ANASTIGMATUGOLENZ" written on the flat circumference of the front lens. Thought it was the brand !!! When it was just here to describe one of the optical elements. Some kind of crap, but transparent enough to let me create pictures ! Then... I got contaminated. Quickly. Visiting my father at his newspaper office, meetings with journalists and photojournalists, seeing how the whole thing works, etc. got me stuck on photography. From then, I purchased my first "serious" camera... Fuji AX-3 paired to a 50mm/f:1.6. What a creative tool for a teenager who doesn't know s*** about drawing or painting ! Other lenses and a flashlight came along. All that was key for me to discover the world of imagery. Then I started travelling, and became "more serious" by purchasing an entire Olympus system... OM2n + OM4Ti (with power grip) + two strobes + six lenses, etc. Sooooo fine, such marvelous pieces of gear were these products from Olympus. I spent some 12 to 13 years with them, and produced what I started to consider "creations". Which led me to try pro-photography. So I switched to some more serious gear... sold the Olympus-bag and invested in a full-on Nikon set... F5 + F90x (with power grip) + 70-200/f:2.8 + 28/f:1.8 + 12-24/f:2.8 + two SB Speedlight, etc. and went on to work full-time, published for many magazines, newspapers, Web-sites (Europe, Oceania, America). Several major problems occured, and I decided to quit. Definitely. As for pro-cyling, I "hung up my cameras" and never touched them again for... 15 years. They're still somewhere in a bag, in a box, in a closet. I changed job completely, to start something totally else. Then an accident happened early 2016, leading me to being unable to walk and work. When things started to get a tad better, I needed some creative way to walk on... and purchased a camera. The challenge was to find something simple, effective, efficient, light, versatile, (really) portable, "serious", evolutive, multi-purpose, etc. I did not want anymore photo-pack reaching 10+ Kg when stored in a bag... huge, unconvenient, impossible to hide, impossible to divide in "task-dedicated packs", potentially dangerous (everyone who fell down because of a heavy photobag knows what I mean... the "helicopter effect"), easy to steal (saw that during MTB World championships once), over-complicated, NOT user-friendly... etc. And guess what I bought ! Well.. I won't tell you, because we just don't care... neither you nor me. But I found my photographic swiss-knife, and it just makes me happy. ohhh... aside from that happiness... I was requested for paid work, and sold pictures and films (corporate, music video, shorts), with more to come. And I purchased that camera for less than 2000 USD, including zoom-lens, one filter, two extra batteries, L-cage, (hand and shoulder) straps, one SD-XC UHS-II card. ohhh again... never ever spit on new things, they're what may change your tomorrows. The real danger comes from "purists", THEY are the ones who try to persuade you they're right / you're wrong. And that "It was better back in the days.". They deserve the barrel-torture, just like in the XVIth century... when things were "better". Would you still press the shutter (several hundred times a day !) of a camera with cartridge-loaded film, silicium round-the-lens lightmeter, single-use disposable flash-bulbs, plastic backdoor, blurry optical finder with microprisms, no-never-TTL, 1/500th maximum shutter speed, no-never-AF (to be continued)...??? Really... would you, every single day ? SLR cameras were invented some day, they shall disappear... mirrorless cameras were invented (phew at last !!!), they shall disappear... something else shall come, that shall disappear too. And be honest... if a double-bass is that big (producing low frequencies), it's because a smaller one is a guitar (producing mid-range frequencies). If a 24X36 sensor produces some sort of quality, a half-sized sensor (with the very exact same technology all around) will give you half-the-quality. Be honest, thank you.

Give me an example of 2 cameras with different sensor size and otherwise the same technology. And do net forget the lenses which are optimzed for a definite size of film or sensor.
