The truth about owning a 392 engine I wish I knew.
The 392 is a great engine producing 485hp / 475 tq, unfortunately due to the weak pistons in it building it up can often be seen as not worth the investment since Hellcat prices have dropped. In this video I explain my perspective on why its smarter to avoid modding the 392 and voiding warranty and instead upgrading to the hellcat which has the better drivetrain components to handle the additional power.

You pull the oil release bolt out of the bottom of the oil pan when it is running. The running engine will hold the oil inside and you just shine a flashlight inside to check it. Simple. 😉😂

Found this on the challenger forum replied by an SRT Engineer. A decent explanation. I've had this once or twice on my 2016 Scat 392 not a daily driver. I've done 3 cold starts a month apart since I stored it for the winter with no issues. Here it is: New engines take some time for the piston rings (sometimes seals as well) to break in. As ring tensions have reduced and bore finishes have improved (read smoother) the rings will take longer to seal to the mating surface. In some rare cases, if an engine is run very hard right out of the chute you will get some glazing between the bores and rings which will cause an even longer (or potentially never) break in period. Normal conditions will break in and seal up well within several thousand miles. Make a few hard runs with the car after break in will ususally accelerate the sealing. Some light smoke from the exhaust on start ups (usually cold or warm after sitting for a time) is not an issue. If the smoke is heavy or continuous during driving there may be a mechanical problem, take into the dealer.

@charlesc7723
@charlesc7723 5 лет назад
The smoke generated at startup was more than likely caused by you racing the engine at shut down. The oil pressure pushes the oil up into the heads and drains down onto the cylinders. When you turned it off, this leaves the valves open for oil to drain down onto the cylinders. Hope this explains your scare.
@moparsrt1905
@moparsrt1905 9 месяцев назад
That makes no sense. The only way for the oil to drain through the valves into the cylinder is through bad valve seals or through the intake manifold. The heads drain oil back into the block.

Most likely from not having an oil catch can. The oil build up in the intake manifold can do that. If you get an oil catch can and the problem still persists after a month or so, then you have a bigger problem. Bad valve guides/seals.

The oil smoke comes from built up oil in the head. I used to own a brand new 2014 Challenger SRT8 6 sp. manual. I'm very keen on how the engine runs. At first my car was running hot, sluggish, and sucked gas until I got on the highway. So, I found out about the "Oil Catch Can" that's made for Mopars to "catch" the extra oil before it ends up in the head. It costs $66 and is very easy to install by hand. I had to dump it about every 5,000 miles or every oil change. I also installed a K&N cold air intake at the same time. Man, it made the biggest difference!! The engine ran sharp, cool, and clean after that, no matter how little I drove it. And no more oil smoke! 👍

On the 392 it's just blow by from the crankcase throwing it back into the intake. Completely normal. This is why guys get catch cans.
@ianbrown9447
@ianbrown9447 5 лет назад
Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but did you conduct the break in process as directed by the manufacturer? If not then the proper seating of the rings might be the cause of the blow by. Not a mechanic, just saw a few videos about the breaking in of a new dodge challenger. Nice ride and hope you enjoy it for many years to come brother.
@badfatboy1
@badfatboy1 4 года назад
That smoke at startup was just a little 'oil blowby' and is normal with large block hemis. The best cure is to get an oil catch can so instead of the oil going back through the intake via the breather, the catch can puts the oil back into the engine rather than the intake. You will notice that without a catch can you will loose a few 10's of a quart over time because it gets burned off through ignition. Just make sure to top her off every six months or so...

Yep, it happens to my T/A sometimes too, and it happened to my SRT8 Challenger. Tends to happen more if I park the car on an incline. Most notably it can mean the oil is slightly overfilled and the previous engine run time was very short. It is just blow by getting cleaned out of the intake

The 392 has plenty of usable power. My daily driver is a 2017 SRT Challenger; just good all around fun. Yes, I wish it was like to old days of just adding parts and turning...well it is, but this is way more complicated. I might just do it anyway, but like you say for an additional $20k, I could have got a Helllcat. The truth is, I can't get the power to the ground now. It sounds great just stock. If anything, I would look at something to make it launch better. I could go with drag tires, but that takes away from the daily driver. It is a pretty good all-rounder, and that's why I got it in the first place. Sure, you could spend money invest in an upgrade, but you addressed the more basic question of should you. Making an assessment first is smart.

I currently own a 14 charger 392. And honestly i bought it bc its a family/muscle car. Yes i knew it'll never be as fast as most pound for pound bc of the weight and its inability to be boosted safely (not saying it can't be, just 6.4 arent as good as the 6.2 boosted). Anyways i put down 498hp and 471tq to the wheels with minor bolt ons and cam upgrade. Its being built now with forged internals and E85 then 175 shot spray. The amount of money i spent i could have had a LS swapped 900hp plus car, but i love my car and im comited now in it. Bottom line, it all depends on your preferences and budget. My car puts down now 543hp 497tq NA with E85 and 683/671 on 175 shot. I own an '18 Charger R/T that I picked up from the dealer literally a year ago yesterday after ordering it from the factory. I haven't touched anything and really don't plan on it anytime soon. For the average person, 370 hp is more than enough cruising the highways and backroads and occasionally putting it to the floor whether it's straight or curved. Honestly, what I really want to do is replace my performance suspension from the Super Track Pak (Which is the only reason I got the option along with slightly better brakes) with the 3 mode suspension from the Hellcat. I have no desire to step up to the 6.4 or the Hellcat, due to rising fuel costs, insurance rates, and maintenance costs. I feed my car what is recommends which is 89 octane right from the start and insurance wise literally went up like $12 from my Charger V6. And the 5.7 is pretty good on gas. I love the ideas of the Hellcat and Scat Pack, they're just not for me with everyday driving.

Last time I had smoke like that coming from the exhaust it was a leak in the head gaskets. Check the seals and see if they just need replaced by chance. Also yours could be a slow leak which is why you didn’t see it in the fuel station. Possibly just leave the car sitting for an hour or so and just check how long it takes for the smoke to reappear on start up and see if the amount increases overtime. From the looks it’s probably just a small leak that built up over night.

Performance, start with exhaust and intake (all the way to the plenum). After that, electronic water pump and air compressor. You can look at hellcat plenum’s, but I’m not sure they match up. Then tune it, either with mopar or at a credible tuner who will guarantee their work. As far as you burning oil, get it looked at by the dealership IMMEDIATELY. I had a marauder that did that and when I took it in a year later, it said I had a misfire that was so bad it was beating my transmission to death. And surprisingly it wasn’t that noticeable.

My 16’ scat pack shaker is currently at the dealer getting the motor broken down to replace lifters... cylinder 1 had a misfire. Spark plugs had no gap whatsoever when I pulled the coil packs to check them. Car needs rockers, and a new camshaft as well. 16k miles A8 trans. Mine would also smoke only on cold starts SOMETIMES. It’s weird. Having them check my valve seals as well... & YES I do have a CATCH CAN since around 800 miles on the odometer... & I’m a very spirited driver when I do take my 392 out. A little blue smoke on startup is usually residual oil that leaks into the combustion chamber via valve seals. May also be some oil in the intake manifold if you are not using a PCV can. I wouldn't get too concerned if it doesn't get worse.

Nailed it. Valve seals usually when its a smoke on start up
@hemi57
@hemi57 4 года назад
You are right, there was a lot of smoke. That typically comes from cylinder valve leakage in most cases. However, these newer model cars do use oil filters that have valves to retain oil so on start-up, you have immediate oil lubrication to avoid "dry" starts. I own a 2015 Hemi 392 Scat Pack Challenger and have not experienced this...yet. The smoke might have also come from fuel. To avoid a lot of guess work, I fuel my car from the same source every time and pay the extra change for premium. You can eliminate a lot of guess work by having a compression check. However, I'm not a certified mechanic and would recommend you seek one. The 392 is a great engine.
@hemi57
@hemi57 4 года назад
Keep in mind that the standard 392 does not have the internal engine components that are produced in a HellCat motor. The HellCat engines have "hardend" internals to handle the supercharged power. If you introduce a forced induction system into a standard Scat Pack car, you will likely blow the engine as a result.

I would have to agree. The original machine had a base plate of prefabulated amulite, surmounted by a malleable logarithmic casing in such a way that the two main spurving bearings were in a direct line with the panametric fan. The latter consisted simply of six hydrocoptic marzlevanes, so fitted to the ambifacient lunar waneshaft that side fumbling was effectively prevented. The main winding was of the normal lotus-o-deltoid type placed in panendermic semi-boloid slots in the stator, every seventh conductor being connected by a nonreversible tremmie pipe to the differential girdlespring on the "up" end of the grammeters.

you should check your stock catch can with dipstick, its probably full and bypassing into your intake. So on initial start up, it burns up oil that was sitting in your intake. drain your OEM catch can.
@kcmototech285
@kcmototech285 5 лет назад
A good oil catch reservoir traps the oily residue entering the intake manifold via PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system...over time, without a catch can, the residue builds up and creates a helluva mess around injectors and intake runners, as well as putting less than a clean air charge to the engine...they're about $120+ for a good kit and super easy to install... As far as his cold start oil burn issue, I'd lean towards leaky valve seals letting oil creep into the cylinders overnight and burning off on start up...maybe a higher viscosity oil to alleviate?

My 2016 ram did the smoke out the exhaust very recently after I bought it brand new and I started seeing it was using a ton of oil like a quart every 1000 miles took to the dealership I bought it at and they gave me the run around after the third complaint from me I just let it go and started keeping oil in the truck when it go low. Then one day it started missing really bad like one of the pistons wasn't firing. This all happened before the first year I owned the truck took it to a different dealership and found out that the one piston ring when they tore everything apart was in the bottom of the oil pan so the ring probably had an issue from factory and the smoke was oil getting built up in the piston and when you started it the smoke was the oil burn off from that piston leak. Now my first smoke from exhaust was much worse than what you saw on your video mine was a cloud of smoke that engulfed my entire truck. So just some advice since both motors are hemi my truck was a 5.7 and yours is a 6.4 but could be same issue.
