The true story behind The Empire Strikes Back and it’s reception at the time of release. Was it loved or hated? Many people including Rian Johnson have started trying to change history and George Lucas’s legacy in their attempt to defend the Disney Star Wars films. Especially The Last Jedi. Let’s look at what really happened. Was the second Star Wars film a letdown?
Did it divide the fandom?

The fact Rian thinks Luke getting beaten by Vader is a bad scene shows how out of touch he is.

It actually is a bad scene. So much wasted potantial. Just imagine Luke striking down Vader or more than that even kill of Palpatine. That would have been cool. Or let an X-Wing Hyperspaceram a Super Star Destroyer. Man that would have been so cool. Or what about Luke lifting up the whole Echo Base with no training and trhowing it on the imperial troops to help the rebels escape. That movie could´ve been so cool written by Rian.

@@85LARGE Awesome! We should write the next Star Wars movie together. It´s going to be the best movie ever. And just imagine how cool it would´ve been to see Luke stop Vader sacrificing himself for his son. He would just force push him away from Palpatine the very moment he tries to grab him. I allready came up with an epochal script for that scene! He could say to Vader, before they bove get killed of by Palpatine, "That´s how we are winning, not destroying what we hate, but saving what we love." And then he should kiss Vader. Why Lucas didn´t came up with such an awesome ending? Well luckily Disney is there to fix this madness from the Original Trilogie.

When George Lucas sold Star Wars to Disney, he didn't sell them everything. He still retains the rights to the OT movies and characters. Also, when Disney uses an OT character in one of its movies, they have to pay George a 25% royalty for doing that. THIS is the reason why Disney is killing off all the OT characters: they don't want to give George his cut of the profits. I think the order to kill off every OT character came straight from the top. Rian Johnson didn't kill Luke on his own but he certainly took a lot of glee in carrying out the order to do it.
@Nate-mq4rh
@Nate-mq4rh 4 года назад
I actually know where Rian was coming from with that idea, bc by the time of the prequels, the Jedi Order had lost its way so much with all of it's doctrines and dogma's and they couldn't even figure out that their own chancellor of the republic was not only a sith lord, but THE sith lord. They were so loyally blind to the republic that they couldn't possibly make that connection, even when dooku told them about. Also, they had countless opportunities to prevent order 66, with them even discovering the inhibitor chips in the clones. Another thing is that they are equally, if not more responsible for Anakin's turn to the dark side than Sidious himself was. They stole children from families without them having any say about it, that's it hipity hopity your child is our property. The clone wars turned keepers of peace in soldiers and generals in a war that they should've sensed was orchestrated, were taught to act without feelings and emotion (things that no being can effectively do) which ended up being a rule that almost all jedi broke. I mean just look at Qui Gon, he's the perfect example of a true Jedi and what a Jedi should strive to be, whereas Mace Windu essentially represents what Jedi have become. But I do think Rian fucked up in essentially make Luke throw away the chance to bring back the Jedi to what it once was.

You need the hero to experience some struggle, otherwise there's no tension in your film. Luke's "getting his ass handed to him" was important for his character development and made Vader more imposing and dangerous
@Monkees4Evah
@Monkees4Evah 4 года назад
All Luke did was get his ass kicked until ROTJ. The Jabba's Barge scene was the first time he was unequivocally confident and victorious. Sure, he blew up the Death Star, but that was only because Han showed up to save his ass and he finally trusted in the Force for the first time. His best friend was also killed in the process... ...another thing Rian doesn't seem to get. He acts like Luke was a Chuck Norris character in the original trilogy.
@autumn702
@autumn702 2 года назад
Vader had won two fights by then, first against Obi-wan and then against Luke, it makes you see him as powerful and dangerous. So when Luke finally defeats him in RotJ and turns him back to the light side to defeat the Emperor it's a triumphant victory and climax that has been building over the last three movies.

It's heartbreaking. Imagine you're Mark Hamil, Star Wars was your big role, and after those movies, you went to a lot of conventions, and the character you played stays an important part of your life for over 30 years. Then, Disney buys star wars and they say they want you to play your iconic role. You agree, work out a lot, lose a lot of weight to get in shape, reunite with your old co-stars and are ready to take your character on a last adventure so to speak. In the first movie, you don't get to do much, but the whole movie just sets up how important you are and everybody wants to see you in the second one. Then, after this build-up you have to deconstruct and disrespect the legacy of your character in a humiliating manner on the big screen and sit next to the idiot responsible for this who is telling people that his movie is brilliant and you are not allowed to openly criticise the movie, so you just sit there and listen to the crap he says. Knowing that millions of fans you care about are going to look at your face in the cinemas and be disappointed must be terrible. No wonder why he looks dead inside :(

But nope! The Force is female and boy do I feel like a jackass. For the real Star Wars fans both the plot and expectations have been deliberately subverted, ignored and shit on. Some would say “Disneyfied”. They should make a special edition of the Matrix Reloaded but the whole movie is two hours of the scene of Neo fighting infinite Agent Smiths but Agent Smith is non-binary and Neo is played by Cathy Bates. Money better spent than a ticket for the Last Jedi in my opinion. Your screen name cracked me up.

I've always maintained that Rey should have been a Skywalker and had it revealed in the Last Jedi. It's the only scenario that would have justified Luke's actions and behavior... if when he sensed Ben's thoughts he had a vision, of Ben already turned to the dark side, but more importantly of Ben, now Kylo, turning Luke's own daughter to the darkside. That vision is the only thing I could see justifying him even considering to ignite his lightsaber. His love and desire to protect his own daughter, after his wife was killed (by Snoke to add more depth and history to that story arc). He hires someone to take his daughter away, to a location even he doesn't know, to protect her from Snoke, who is obsessed with ending the Skywalker line. Then all these years later, he sees the vision of Kylo turning her to the dark side. Every thing he's done to protect her has failed, maybe his only chance to save her is to sacrifice Ben, here and now... that's the only believable motivation for that scene. And of course, the catch 22, by his own actions and response he ends up driving Ben away for good, leading him down the path to the dark side and fulfilling his vision. The very actions he takes to prevent the events from happening just end up causing them to happen anyway. A self fulfilling prophecy. That would be enough to drastically change his character, to take himself out of the equation. And then, upon learning of her true parentage, learning that her own father not only just abandoned her but had no intention of returning. That he turned his back on her, on his family, ultimately drives her to join Kylo. Family is important to Rey, you don't turn your back on family. Luke lied to her, decieved her, abandoned her, turned his back on her. Kylo did not. The second movie ends with Rey joining Kylo, the future of the resistance and who will rise up to defeat the First Order is unknown. That, would have made a much more compelling second movie. In my own humble opinion.

He is mixed and grew up in the 70s around a lot of racial turmoil. He said the army was one of the few places where that didnt matter and thought it was cool in Star Wars it was the same. To me that's how you do diversity and messaging right.

It was obviously a total burn to what RJ did to Luke and throwing shade on the scene where he tosses it off behind him at the beginning, I couldn’t help but smirk at that scene.

@Bblurre Wikipedia says he was born in December 1973, so he was already around when the movies came out. He was around six or seven by the time Empire was released, which means he might have been disappointed at the time, as it was a bit more of character development and less action and at that age character development isn't really something you often look for in a movie.

@daedalus_20v 4 года назад
@Davey Jones Exactly. And by the way Johnson... Solo and Leia were freaking BETRAYED!!! They got sold out!!! How do you just ignore that and say "Han went down without a fight"?? Furthermore, there is absolutely a difference between trying to shoot your way out of a room when it's just your own neck on the line vs. being completely outnumbered, outgunned, ambushed, disarmed and faced with the very real prospect of the only people you care about being murdered if you don't surrender (all of them!). Vader force pulls the blaster from his hand. What exactly was he supposed to do at that point, karate? Not only is Han *not* simply "going down without a fight," he's actually making the bravest choice of all, sacrificing himself so that his friends may live. He does the only thing POSSIBLE to save his friends and give them a chance to survive. How is that going down without a fight? In the words of the great Jean Luc Picard, "It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life!"

Rian's argument is that if the ESB came out today, it would be blasted by fans. You could test that argument, by having teenagers who have never seen the film and have them rate ESB. there was a video of a dad recording his kid watching the scene where Darth Vader reveals to Luke that he is Luke's father. the kid is astounded, absolute shock. hell, when i showed my wife the star wars films for the first time, she looked at me during this same scene and was like, "is this true?? is he really Luke's dad?" Rian just cannot face the truth that his film was underwhelming, poorly written and an absolute insult to Star Wars fans everywhere. Also, it wouldn't surprise me if this interview helped Rian lose his trilogy. How are you going to shit on films that Disney owns? Did he think they would be thrilled that Rian was trying to prop his shit up by yanking down a well respected film like ESB???
