I should note, I use V90 cards and I use AF-C tracking.....if you use AF-S the buffer lasts a bit longer... But with AF-C tracking with a XF lens with linear motors, it craps out right around 5 seconds...
Quickly doing the maths 40mpx Raw files are probably averaging 40mb ish each at lossless compressed and if your doing 10fps? that’s trying to move 400mb of data per second, note your card is rated at 300mbs. This seems like a combination of 40mpx sensor and 300mbs SD card speed bottle neck and possibly small internal buffer not helping.
I have no idea squirrely i'm not a scientist... Maybe the processing chip has to calculate the AF and as well clear the buffer??? I have no idea...@@SquirrelHybrid
Do you have the clarity on your film sim set to a positive or negative? I used to think my camera was moving slow, but once I put the clarity back at 0 everything was perfect
I agree with your long term review, the buffer indeed sucks but then again "the right tool for the right job" this was never advertised as a sports camera, and for portraiture, street, travel, macro and landscape photography is perfectly fine. If you need to shoot bursts of images all the time then you get yourself an a1, z9, z8, r6II, xh2, etc.
I use my full frame Nikon's professionally, but I purchased the XT-5 for travel. I am very impressed with the image quality of this camera, but I noticed that the 40 megapixel sensor is very demanding and requires very good lenses in order to resolve detail with this sensor. The Fuji 70-300 is an excellent match for the the XT-5. The Tamron 17-70mm 2.8 is good, but not perfect with the XT-5. The tiny Sigma 18-50 2.8 works surprisingly well with the XT-5. The slow buffer doesn't bother me. It is for travel anyway. That is what my Z9 is for. I purchased the Fuji hand grip and it improves the ergonomics somewhat. I am going to purchase the 23mm F/2, but it is frequently out of stock. I enjoy your channel!
Thank you for your support and for being a part of our channel! It means a lot to hear that you're enjoying the content. I'm glad the XT-5 has exceeded your expectations with its image quality. Don't worry, the 23mm F/2 will be back in stock soon and I'm sure it'll be worth the wait!
After being not too bothered about the 40 megapixels suddenly my pixel peeping eye is really appreciating the quality of the new image. Which is bad news for my bank account. Well done for pumping out the fuji content. Hopefully the RU-vid gods will reward you with more subscribers.
I've been enjoying the X-T5. Coming from the X-T3 it's nice to have IBIS and a higher resolution LCD, and one new feature that people neglect to mention is that the screen pulls out towards you slightly so that the viewfinder isn't blocking the screen as much when looking down. One issue I do have with it is that when punching-in the white balance on the LCD drastically changes (ie. becoming very warm), and when punching-out it takes a second to readjust back to normal. But the white balance is normal when taking the picture, even if I took the picture during the "very warm" preview.
Did you try turning off "Natural Live View" in Screen Settings page 2 of 4? I did that, and now I get a great representation in the viewfinder and LCD screen. I figured the opposite would be true, but alas here we are. LMK if you have that off and if it helps if you had to do that.
@@SamBrownMusic It was turned off, but turning it on doesn't fix it either. I'll also note that this seems to only happen when any of the 3 auto white balance modes are selected. Thanks for the suggestion though. 🙂
@SquirrelHybrid yes. All of the AUTO white balance will vary depending on the room. I have set a couple of customs to be a neutral, a cool, and a greenish hue for most of my shots.
I have the X-T5 and X-S20 and no kidding, the grip on the 20 is SO much better. For what it's worth I tried the JJC grip, and I never got along with it because there's a corner that's not rounded over and it dug into my palm. I've since bought the SmallRig grip and used that over a week-long vacation - MUCH better. They chamfered that corner and it was a non-issue.
Thanks for sharing your experience! It's always helpful to hear about different grips and how they compare to each other. Glad you found one that works better for you!
Been using an X-S10 for a few years and can’t decide between X-T5 and X-S20 for my upgrade. Leaning towards X-T5 as I’m doing 99% photos and kinda don’t like the flip screen.
as for the buffer, shooting at 10fps for 5 seconds is more than enough buffer for sports. if you're holding the shutter for longer than 2 seconds, really, you're not knowing what you want to shoot. you're just hoping for a good shot.
I don't think so. X-H2s has around 5GB buffer, and X-T5 around 2GB. Also, 40MP RAW is more havier. BTW. What do you think about Z8? Is AF good? Did you miss the mechanical shutter?
Actually i found that the xt5 was perfectly serviceable for sports shooting when i was the F1 race in singapore although i felt the AF was a bit lacking
Unfortunately the buffer is the result of the 40mp sensor .... I also prefer the grip of the XS1O XS20 ... If I didn't already have XS10 I think I would get the XS20
If you need a better buffer, that's what the X-H series is for, no? The X-T5 is, from what I understand, definitely geared towards the slower photographers as you say. The physical dials are also probably not the best options for sports photography. With that said - even as a concert photographer I have never needed to shoot 5 seconds continously with a high burst.
I’m torn. I love the compact size of the XT5 especially compared to the Z9 and the battery life is great. But I’m still tempted by the Nikon ZF. It only gets about half the battery life and is bigger but with that said, I had a Nikon z6ii and it never over heated on me and the photos were beautiful. I think I’m going to end up with 3 cameras lol 😂
I like the way the camera grip feels. It's no where near as much as my Nikon Z6, but I think of the grip kind of like a crimp hold on a rock climbing wall. So for you bouldering fans it's great! Lol
"Shooting sports is out of the question with this camera" - sorry, disagree. It is all about knowing your sport, previewing the next movement, be present of what's going on and then do a couple of photos. 3-5 should be easily enough. If you shoot with a deep buffer, you end up with hundreds if not thousands of very similar photos, this can kill your joy with photography, as you will have - every time - to delete hundreds and thousands of photos. Boring as hell.
Your right the hand grip sucks and when u add a hand grip it makes the camera almost as big as the XH2 . The xs20 managed to stay super small with the perfect hand grip
I do wildlife photography as a hobby shooting with Canon R5. I need a travel camera/back up camera. I used to have X-E3 and X-T2, love Fuji camera so I recently bought an X-T5. Man the buffer is very disappointed just like you mentioned. Also the AF is not same level as the R5. Well I bought it for travelling use shouldn't complain too much.
Buffer problems? Why are you shooting sports with raw files? I've talked with several top professional sports photographers--ones who shoot NFL, MLB, Olympics, etc.--and none of them shoot raw files. They are shooting for clients that need shots immediately, i.e., the wire service doesn't have time to convert raw to JPG for publication. Try shooting JPGs only and see if the buffer is still a problem. And as others have posted, you may be able to buy faster cards, too. There is a video on YT that shows a guy getting great results shooting basketball with the X-T5. Thanks for posting! I love your channel!
That’s cool if you shoot jpg. What about the people that want to shoot raws doing high action stuff? You gonna discount them off? The great thing about RU-vid is i am just one opinion out of all the millions out there.. I’m only sharing from what I’m experiencing.. you telling me that I should get a faster memory card is moot. It’s like you calling into your internet service provider and them telling you to unplug the power from the modem and plugging it back in when you know damn well that’s not the issue I shoot with v90 cards with all my cameras so this shouldn’t be an issue.. thanks for sharing your thoughts
Dude I had to sub. Loved every bit of this review. Plus your photos are damn good! I have to ask, how do we find your film recipes? because man are they nice!
Thanks for that, makes me feel better at getting the H2. The T5 writing speed is what made me get a H2. I'm in grief over missing the T line features (classic dials, size, push commands, approachable look). Fuji should have put two CF card slot in it (and the H2 too, not just one CF). BTW, even the smaller T3 grip is perfect for me.
hey I shot an awesome turtle race the other day! haha, just kidding. that line was really funny. good video, looking into the X-T5 to augment all my sony gear. waiting for the (hopefully) upcoming 16-50 to be packaged with it as a kit lens. also looking at the 18mm 1.4 to complement the kit lens (cityscape, city, street, landscape, travel; no events, sports or portrait).
Great review thank you!!! I am loving my xt5. I showed up at a sports shoot and found out about the buffer while on a job 🤦♂️. Still made it work ;) tho
Am I the only person who really wants touch tracking?!? I love how SONY has touch tracking where you can touch the screen and it tracks to whatever you touch. Not just hoping it grabs a face or an eye. I love my XT-5 but at my job I use a SONY FX-3 and the tracking is definitely better.
Hi thanks for your amazing video. Regarding the overheating issue you mentioned, my xt5, gets slightly warm on the left grip, even just after 20 minutes of turning it on, only shooting. Has that been your experience as well?
I shoot mostly live music and the buffer is non-issue for me. I shoot at 3fps in continuous low, typically. I really do wish we could use the clarity setting without a buffer, though. I’m sure they’re working on it for the next firmware update… right? 😅
Hello, I'm telling you about my situation to see if you can advise me. I work mainly as a product and event photographer, although I also make videos without using very "complex" codecs for companies and events. Until now I was using an xt3 with the 10-24, the 16-55, the 50-140, the 33 and a 27 that I use for street. It has happened to me twice in the middle of a job that the shutter got stuck and I couldn't fix it. So my question is, is it worth switching to Sony? Or is the xh2s professional enough to last for many years? The Sony system calls me the sigma lens park, the focus, the durability and that it is ff. Regarding the Fuji, I already have quite a few lenses (although they are expensive), I feel comfortable with the Fuji, but I don't feel it is as professional as the Sony. I appreciate any comments.
Can you make a video of how you became a photographer/how to be a full time photographer. You take beautiful pictures with great compositions and it seems you have alot of work and currently i would love to transition to being a full time photographer and or getting jobs as a photographer. Thank you in advance if you ever get to reading this.
I love the X-T5 but the buffer is indeed not great. I get not even 2 seconds when shooting 15 fps bursts which I don't quite understand given that the X-H2 buffer lasts endlessly when using the same SD card. It's however not a deal breaker for me as I shoot 90% of the time in continuous low at 6 FPS which allows me to extend the buffer sufficiently.
I'm most interested in the new larger sensor and the IBIS for my manual lenses - specifically for the Rokinon 135mm F2 (if you ever see a copy cheap get it, incredible lens). Understandable with the buffer size, with the X-T5 having higher resolution files.
@@Iamtongue Also made by Samyang. Easily one of the sharpest lenses out there. As it was made for full-frame, on crop sensor you get edge-to-edge performance at F2. You can get the full frame version with an adaptor for Fuji, but I opted for the native Fuji version of this lens. Considering what people pay for a Nikkor or Canon 135mm F2ish lens this thing is a bargain. Of course, it is heavy, and manual but you especially might appreciate it for portrait work. As far as bokeh goes on the Fuji platform, this can also create some of the blurriest backgrounds with it telephoto F2 performance. Others may opt for the 50-140 F2.8 for practicality, but the Rokinon is still the top for sheer quality.
Would you recommend the xt5 for somebody just getting into photography and primarily wanting to do portrait photography? I’ve had my eye on it for a few weeks now whilst trying to find alternatives but I really like the size, colours, price tag ect almost eve try thing seemed perfect Until you mentioned the buffer. 😅
Hi! I have a question. I do food photography and videography and I'm wondering if this camera is good for shooting closeup food videos in low light? Also, what do you think is the best lens for food photography? Thank you!
Any camera now a days is great. You have to get something that can shoot close to capture the detail, i don't know what your budget is but look into macro lenses or even the 56mm f1.2
It depends on what your friend shoots... but me not knowing anything about your friends situation, and I'm just going off with things that I like... i'll take the XS20.
Ya i still use it for hybrid. I'm going to use it more now that I have a two lens setup. Switching lenses is a drag. I rather switch cameras on during the shoot for a smoother transition.
Have you used/needed the 1/180,000 shutter speed available on the electronic shutter? Seems crazy - but I have hit 1/32,000 on my camera before. On XT3 you get 42 frames at 11 fps mechanical, and at 20fps you get 42 frames. XT5 does 15fps mechanical for 22 frames and 13fps electronic yields 29 frames. Basically the XT5 with 24% more resolution gets 52% or half as many frames as the XT3. So I'd say they cranked up the file size without increasing the buffer size at all. That is a bummer. On the XT3 I rarely do more than very short high-speed bursts, but the last thing I want is WORSE performance when "upgrading". Based on your complaints, it seems like you need an XH2! But of course one that is in your hand, you'll miss the XT5's "stealth" (just like I would). This is why I can't dump the XT3 - its awesome to have a small, uncomfortable body when you are out and about. But then, slap a battery grip on and you are ready for pretty much anything. XT5 definitely should not have been crippled it could have been amazing.
The most I went up to was 1/64000 I was shooting at f0.95 during the summer it was wild!! And ya I had the xh2 but sold it to get the xt5! I’ll live with it even though it’s annoying. It’s still an amazing camera minus this one annoyance.
Yes, if you watch this video... everything was filmed on the XT5 and a gimbal... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YunaTmVjSR0.html&ab_channel=Iamtongue
Hey! You still shooting jpg and raw… ? I found I use about 20% of my images during a shoot out more straight jpg with very minor tweaks! I just hate storing both images for everything!!! Any thoughts? lol
Anyone have any tips for extending battery life on X-H2? Ive turned it to EVF only when my eye is up to it, the pre focus thing and am turning it off in between shots but i feel like it's far off the quoted mark.
@@Iamtongue hm not sure, when i tested on my gfx100s min iso was 400 vs no DR400 but still 400 i was still able to pull more highlight DR, i dont remember if i tested on higher issos
XT5 needs ISO 500 for DR400 - XT3/4 need ISO 640 (2-stops from base ISO). I find it more helpful for IN-CAMERA editing since you don't have enough latitude/precision for highlight or shadow boost/cut. In a few test shots I tried, I found that shooting base ISO (160) managed to yield a better result because there was less noise in the shadows. If your plan is to edit RAW files later, is seems better to keep the ISO down and the expose for the highlights. Buy IDK - both images came out looking good.
@@IamtongueAhhhh, forgot about the CF card.... I'm definitely not going to be in that budget level of camera for a while. Maybe when the next generation comes out.
Buffer, buffer, buffer… wrong camera! XH-2 is the one. Type B card and not a worry. But you sold that one, didn’t you😜 You’re going to have to choose between stealth and speed😁
I've pre-ordered it and had it returned after just holding it and tinkering with the dials, buttons, door, etc. Felt like a toy in contrast to the XT-2. So I'm still waiting for the Xpro line...
Shooting sports is out of the question with this camera??? Seriously? Dude, try shooting athletics, basketball or soccer with Nikon D1 from 1998. 10 frames burst and that's it. 2.3MP only. No raw, jpeg only (if you don't wanna shoot bursts of only 2 shots). Not to mention that in the film era you had only 5 sec of continuous shooting (if you had camera that was gobbling film at 5fps) that's all that you had before you had to change a film roll. That's what I had to do back in the day, and that's how I shoot those sports to this day. No raw files, jpeg only, course that will make your buffer WAY deeper. Oh yeah, you have to learn how to shoot jpeg only. For a client. Smart dude you are, shouldn't be that hard. And now tell me agin that you can't shoot sports with the X-T5...
@@biriyaniiii you would be better with the XH2s. It’s because in the xt5 has the same buffer as the xt3 but now you are shooting with 40 megapixel raws. Lots more memory.
I think the mistake Fuji made is all this 'tier' nonsense and it's annoyed fans. The XH line is supposed to be flagship, you get the most pro features and accessory support. XH2S = stacked sensor, best video specs, battery grips, CF Express B and super EVF etc etc. Then the XT line is mid tier, you get a crummier EVF, no CF Express B, no battery grip (so many pros shooting with the XT3/4 professionally wanted stay with the XT5 but the omission of the battery grip was a deal breaker for them, they went elsewhere) 😥 And then there is the entry level or lower tier, stuff like the XS20, but its still too expensive in some ways, garbage EVF, no WR, no dual slot. This XS20 cost me more than the XT4 and about $1kAUD more than what it's predecessor XS10 was going for. So I dunno... it all feels a bit weird and messy. If Fuji just made good cameras and let their user base decide on the interface they wanted that would be better imo. Imagine a XT5 with CF Express B, XH2S EVF, buffer like XH2S, battery grip support etc. People would love it! Choose a deeper grip and PASM style and flip out screen of the XH2/S or go for the XT5 analogue controls with similar support. But no... PS, I think the L, M and S settings for IQ is a Jpg only thing. I'm not sure you can actually get lower mega pixels from the XT5 than 40 (which might explain the zero difference to buffer). I think brands of cameras that allow this difference sized megapixels tend to make a big deal about it in marketing and I haven't seen any of that with Fuji but I might be wrong 🤷ru-vid.comgaming/emoji/7ff574f2/emoji_u1f625.png
Dude, I totally get what you're saying! The camera tiers can be a bit confusing, but it's cool to hear your take on it. Maybe one day they'll make a camera that's just perfect for everyone. And i wish Fujifilm would just give us small medium L raws like they have in Sony cameras.
@@Iamtongue I thought it must be 🤣 love the xt3 and still looking over the fence at the xt5. Nostalgic neg, ability to crop better (with 40mp) and easier programming of recipes (WB shift, amount of simulations, clarity etc) are all attractive features. And the battery as you mention!
@@Iamtongue LOL you’re hilarious bro. Just pulling your leg. It’s honestly a good amount of time. I do consider short term 1-5 months and long term 6-12. But it blurs at the mid point depending on how much one uses the camera. Regardless, I could confidently say you have a years worth of experience with the T5 ✅.
