I bought these kits for my family camping kit. It is way better than the old aluminum BSA Official mess kits that we used back in the 1980's and 1990's. For $6 it's a great bargain and cheaper than some disposable aluminum foil pans that the ultralight crowd likes to use. It is hard to go wrong these mess kits. Keep up the good work.

Excellent choice as a second kit when you invite a friend who’s never camped before, give it to him as a gift and you never know, he might become an outdoor camping person after that experience. $6 is worth it as a second kit I think.

Got one and use it. Works just fine for me. Used the pan over wood fire and over gas. Did several fishing and camping catch & cooks. It is kind of cheap but functional and I personally don't worry about impressing anyone in the wilderness with my cooking gear anyway.

The nice thing is all the things one can fit into the closed kit. I have salt, pepper, seasoning salt(Lawyer's), wash rag, and beef and chicken bouillon cubes, a few Lipton's Cup O' Soup and some Real Lemon packets. I remember cooking on something very similar as a Boy Scout many years ago. Now I carry it in the car, just in case...

I just got one for Christmas and it’s awesome! Put it on the coals, hung the pot over a fire, and it does the job just as well as my ti bale handle pots. I sawed off a small birch branch, shaved the bark off, punched a hole in the middle with my victorinox huntsman and screwed the makeshift knob onto the provided bolt and it was good to go.

Used the frying pan last year over a camp fire to cook a steak and veggies! Work great! It did warp but the meal was great, had to pay more attention to it though. For the money it’s pretty good. I think your handle is bent or mine is, either way mine doesn’t go that low it is more parallel to the pan.

When I was a young scout my parents owned a small outdoor shop so I got "better" budget gear but most of my friends were just as broke as us but without the resources of an outdoor gear shop. They got the Walmart and (dare I date myself) Kmart budget gear. I will say it served them well and we all had lots of fun outside together but they were more frustrated than I was when we needed more than boiled water. Great kit for a beginner or for the bugout stash you may never get back to. But expect to want an upgrade pretty quickly. Great summation and video Doc! Thanks

Had one as a child. We called it a Boy Scout kit. It was light and compact, and functional. It was the kind of aluminum that when rubbed, your finger would gain black stains. You could taste the metal. That kit is the reason that I won't use aluminum cooking pots.

I suspect it costs more to buy the tools needed to make cookware using tin (steel) cans. Plus, there's no need to try to burn off various coatings on most tin cans before they can be used, over a fire, with foods. Another, plus. It's hard to find a larger tin can that will serve as an equivalent frying pan with a missing handle. Perhaps the other end of that large can would be useful as a lid & plate??? Lastly on tin cans. In an emergency situation, often time is one of the most valuable assets. A ready made inexpensive kit can save the much valued resource of time spent hunting materials, tools and fabrication efforts. FWIW... I've put a number of those mess kits in DIY emergency kits for family members. They do the job. Remember water can be boiled in paper cups and plastic water bottles. So, these will do a lot better job than paper & plastic. With care, they will last quite a while.

Yeah the pot doesn’t flex as much because of that divot they pressed into the bottom. It makes it more rigid. You can’t do it with the frying pan though because frying pans need to be flat. I agree that this is an ok value for $6. Of course, when my kids are old enough for scouts they’ll be working though my stockpile of stainless steel Swedish military kits that I picked up for $5.

Six Dollars ($6)! What is not to like for that price? I spent years hunting and hiking through Alaska and carried only one cheap stainless steel pot that used a piece of tie wire for the bail. I cooked, drank, and ate everything from that one pot. If I shot a squirrel, ptarmigan, hare, or grouse, I would spit it on a green stick and cook over the open flames. That one pot served me well for years. Now I carry titanium nesting pots, fry pan, and cups. Oh yeah, and I now have more dishes to wash too. Thanks for your review Doc.

The thing about these is they aren't for cooking (except the pot). The fry pan is a plate. The pot works for light cooking. For scouts, by the time they need a truly functional cook kit, they'll be 14, when high adventure options open up. Until then, they just need a mess kit to eat off of. All their cooking will be patrol cooking. They will have patrol cook kits that can prep food in larger quantities for the entire patrol. For that use, these kits are great, inexpensive, easily replaced options. When they get a little older you can spend more on better individual cook kits they will actually use to cook in on the trail. The gear I most often recommend for younger scouts to have for eating is the Sea to Summit Delta Bowl and Lid. That covers 90% of their mess kit needs, is not terribly expensive, is plenty durable, and they can store a spork, collapsible cup, and other essentials inside it with the lid on.

I'd probably add a trangia pot holder and use the main lid as a frying pan and just use the the frying pan as a plate and keep the handle to hold the whole thing together. For the money, not bad but as said not much use over an open wood fire. Should be ok with gas or alcohol.
@STho205

The pot is the next size down from my two nested pots with a outer nested fryer. My wife saw one at the Indian Boundary camp store for 9.95. She asked if it was way marked up...and I said no, just $3 up from ChinaMart. It fits in her pack better, and I use it for motorcycle camping. The plate is a perfect lid for my intermediate pot too. The cup is mostly useless, considering this is a beans and bacon set, but a short wide coffee cup or plastic bowl will fit inside with the ministove inside. If you put this in the fire, it'll burn everything...but if you pull coals out and set it on the coals, it is perfect. Even the plastic lid know won't melt. For a gas stove, slow and easy will make the best meal. Putting a simmer ring above the flame helps greatly.

Dr. Garcia..my Grandson I really like watch your videos. I bought him this mess kit twice as an upgrade to the cub scout kit. Both are not able to cook eggs or potatoes with burning. Since then I paid twice amount for the Stansport mess kit. Better quality stainless steel. If you season the pans 4 - 5 times with lard untill you get a Golden patina..it is possible to cook over easy eggs without sticking in fact your eggs will slide around just by tilting the pans. I highly recommend you purchase one of those folding camp racks if you intend to cook in a fire pit. Racking coal in or out to regulate the heat. Always thoroughly clean & then reseason your pans when back to Base camp or home. He used this kit all threw cub scouts and now into boy scouts. Other than coal stained outer it still fry eggs & fish without sticking.

Back in the day (around the time of wooly mammoths according to my kids) I had the official Boy Scout kit. I was well made, but out of aluminum. Everything was aluminum back then. The cup was also plastic. Still have it. This kit, for $6 is not bad. Have to be a little more careful cooking, but it should work fine.

I bought this kit several years ago, I don't remember exactly when. Mine appears to be of a higher quality (no funky handle, better steel) and I have used it many times. It is a budget kit but still useable none the less. I never thought about donating cookware to the Boy Scouts but it is an excellent idea.

Couldn't agree more with the sentiment about folk who purport to compare gear that is expensive, purpose made, high quality and kit that is inexpensive and aimed at a budget market or people who are just checking on whether or not an activity is for them without shelling out hundreds for the privilege. Pretentiousness and snobbery exists in every walk of life and activity. Love the channel BTW.

I've used the stainless version quite a bit. If not for how easily the handle bends side to side at the hinge when it's packed, I'd say screw buying any other kit. Sure, it's thin, but the pot and pan both boil water surprisingly quick without the lid. And it actually doesn't warp much, if at all. Again, the forementioned flexing at that hinge is the only qualm. My personal second issue is it does rattle a little bit, but I mentioned that last because many people don't care about that.

Hello Thomas, I'm not Dr. Ernie, but I do have the Kelly Kettle and it boils water more efficiently and faster using a woodfire than any other method I've found. I believe a pantry of freeze dried food and a Kelley Kettle would be an essential part of any preparedness system.

That looks very similar to the Official Boy Scout mess kit that I bought a few years ago on Ebay. It is equipped with similar sized parts only made from aluminum. It also came with a red draw string bag to carry the stuff in and I think it was closer to $25 than $6. I think the handle on the frypan is supposed to do that. By going below the bottom of the pan it can help steady the pan when it is placed directly on a bed of coals. The pan tends to tip towards the handle, especially when it is empty.

These are based on Commonwealth Forces kits from the last century...except they came with alcohol stoves instead of the measuring cup. A Trigea or penny stove fits easily inside. The WW2 US troops got a gasoline stove, so their mess kit is just the fryer and eating lid. Rich Yanks with infinite petrol. Find a squat coffee cup and you'll be happy with this.

I like the bail on the pot. The fact that it can be locked into position will help prevent food from being accidently dumped. Pots that are that shallow in relation to their diameter tend to be real tipsy when full. Those pots with a standard wire bail sometimes will tip and dump their contents when moved too quickly. I prefer pots that are about twice as deep for that given diameter, much less likely to spill, such as your typical bush pot. The frying pan handle is a no go for me. I can picture some youngster grabbing it and dumping the contents into the fire, possibly causing a grease fire, or attempting to grab it, resulting in burns. I would not recommend that kit, rather, look for another entry level kit, at least one with a reasonable handle on the fry pan. One such kit I came across, the cup had markings2, 4, 6 ounces, and 1 cup. You could not get any more into the cup, it would only hold 6 ounces and the trouble is that there are 8 ounces in a cup!!. How much does that cup hold??? Adding a separate squeeze and grab handle for the fry pan would make it less objectionable.

It's a great backpacking cook kit. I've used it every day for three separate camping trips of a week each. It works great on a single burner stove or Coleman stove. I have cooked for two people with it but, it is mainly a personal cook set. I agree the stainless steel is flimsy but, it keeps the weight down and should last many years if taken care of. I have added them to each of my families backpacks with a small folding wood burning SS rocket stove.

Great video great attitude. I absolutely love Ozark camping gear and think its superb. Yes, its usually a bit rubbish, but its also dirt cheap. It definitely has its place whether you are on a low budget, not sure what to get and need a filler, or simply dont want to take your top-shelf gear on a camp. I recently did a first-time trip to a new campsite, right on the edge of a town. I had no clue what security was like or what the usual visitors were like. There is no way Im taking my vintage Polish Lavvu and £100 petrol stove to THAT kind of situation. It might all get nicked when we are at the shops. FYI I bought their cheapest tent, which people are railing on. I even saw one youtuber doing a PSA warning people about it. Pure drama. I paid £20, gave it two coatings of water proofer and it endured perfectly in the rain. Its identical to another £60 tent branded differently but almost certainly comes from the same factory in China. I like your take mate.

I've actually used the kit. The fry pan definitely warps in the fire. It works better if you can suspend it an inch or two above coals. The plastic cup imparts a plastic taste. But all in all, if that's what you can afford and you treat it gently, it will serve...temporarily.

I love my 5 piece kit the cup is crap but the rest is pretty awesome, Same as the mess that I had in the late eighties early nineties in boy scouts!

It isn't terrible, but it isn't great. Just not enough weight to cook consistently. I have had a few of them for several years. Bought one for the 8 yr old as a beginner kit. I collapse an ohuhu down in it with stainless plates and good to go. TC and ATB, Cris.

One good thing is that the pieces are very light and don't take a lot of fuel to heat up.

It might be cheap but could use it on a small cook stove.

It's funny how most people say this kit is great for a last resort or better than nothing, but in reality they are smart kits. The aluminum ones were used by BSA for almost 100 years and worked great for them. Now with stainless Instead aluminum means longer lasting and no leaching.

I had one, gave it to a homeless guy. I bought two more. I just wish that they made the fry pan a little thicker. I would have paid $10 for it, if they did. I believe that a thicker pan would make it a budget-friendly, practical, and durable kit. The pail is pretty well made.

Use the cut can lid from a tin, and put it under the pan....it works great. I took a tuna can, cut four slits and punched holes for my pocket rocket. Makes a great stovetop for that mini blowtorch...makes the pan more stable too.

I don’t get the angle of the handle on the frying pan, seems like it would be problematic. or even dangerous for a kid to use.

The only thing I've used as a mess kit is a 2LB margarine tub, and my BSA plastic cup. This kit on now $12 in 2024.

Your handle on the pan is definitely bent. I have two of these and they aren't like that but they do bend easy
