Seems like vertical drains for the homeowner is the same as a dry-well. If a dry-well works in your situation, then a vertical drain should. It seems like a scam.

Question??? I live in south Alabama where it will rain probably three times a month heavy and behind my double gate I have an area probably 10 foot wide by 6 foot wide that fills up with 4 inches of water and I can never grow sod there because of it. It is very hard to put a French drain there and run it to the street because I have a driveway there . Might sound stupid, can’t I just dig a hole say 7 foot wide by 4 foot wide and about 30 inches deep and put some sand in the bottom say 6 inches and then fill it up with rock and put the fabric on top of that and then 3 inches of topsoil and put sod on top of that. So when it rains, the water is probably I’d say 75 gallons. It will just soak into that hole since that’s where the low spot is and eventually that water will go into the ground since already does it takes a day for it to do that now.

Hardpan varies in thickness. It varies from a few inches some places to many feet in other places. Where it is only a few inches thick and porous material is found beneath it, making holes through hardpan can help reduce waterlogging of the soil.

In the area where we work, it's all clay. In some areas, you can dig 30 feet, and it's all clay. So when you speak like that, I picture you chasing unicorns and rainbows. 😉

“Just get a rub off” LOL. Love your content, as always, but on the east coast we call them scratch offs. When I think of getting a rub off it’s usually not related to the lottery. lol

If you have good, well-draining soil, you will get good results. It doesn’t work in clay.

I have sand under my topsoil, but in a low point I often get puddles. I will try a vertical drain cause its cheap and easy. If it doesn't work then something else.

If a vertical drain worked then my sump basin in clay soil wouldnt need a sump pump. But it needs a sump pumo.

Who am I gonna believe? A guy that shows himself digging the hole and making the drain with before and after video of it not draining and then draining. Or this guy just walking around holding his phone while making the claim that it does not in fact work. Hmm. Yea i think I'm going with the scam!

A dry well is a large-capacity vertical drain. A dry well will do more for you than a vertical drain. That said, you need percolating soil. Neither will work in clay or heavy soil. If you don’t believe me, listen to this guy. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-st1MefrLkN0.htmlsi=tOAoRcHFk7zPpPMY

The video that you’re referring to with before and after footage is deceiving because the land has not been raised/altered and is good sandy soil so of course vertical drainage works in that situation. But with the majority of housing development sites here in FL it will not work. Here is an example: ru-vid.comvWR-GCRV3Gc?si=SEgqyH5YwZwwabC2 We have more examples on our channel.

@@FRENCHDRAINMAN Your first two sentences contradict themselves. Most of America isn't like Florida. In Michigan we have great topsoil and a usually thin layer of clay beneath if any. You are giving poor advice that doesn't apply everywhere in every case. You are the kind of person to avoid doing business with or just in general.

I smell a conflict of interest. 🤣 It will work in some cases and in others it won't. I think it's a good idea for the diy person with little time to spare. It's not a full on French drain and is less labour intensive. It's cheap to do, so not a massive waste of time to kill a curiosity. Theres also no reason that you cant merge the two ideas to save on labour. Depending on the scenario you could have 4 vertical drains along a border fence that are connected to each other with guttering that leads to the extraction technique. This is literally what they do on public roads. You

Please let me know. I already know the answer because you can install your vertical drywall and just fill it up with water. Then, look at it the next day, and it's still going to be holding water. That's the result in clay that we get with those drywells.

So far I've built two massive dry-well systems that contain about a ton and a half to two tons of gravel. One of them was for a sump pump discharge line and the other had downspouts tied into it. I don't see why a massive pit with damn near 2 tons of stone won't work. I'd love to hear feedback from anyone, if they'll work or not.

I don't agree with a lot of what this man says, but I certainly agree with the opening 30 seconds of this video. You're developing some bad habits and you're going to end up in trouble more than likely. It's rare for drywall to work. You have to be in an area that's mostly sand with good drainage. Where we work, that's really hard to find. Clay just holds water like a bathtub. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-st1MefrLkN0.htmlsi=NDLmiIEZ3ZklOYA8
