@7:00 I have a manufactured home in central Texas, and I installed ~800sf of SPC vinyl planks (3.5mm Deco brand with "uniclic technology") in the main living areas a year ago. We lost total power for a full week during the big freeze in Feb 2021; the flooring contracted and came apart enough to create lengthwise gaps ~5mm in a few places, but luckily when we finally were able to warm the house back up, it all came back together cleanly and still looks great!

I'm glad to see this, I'm installing ~1,600 sqft of SPC vinyl plank flooring in my house now with 1/4" expansion gaps around all walls but no transitions between rooms which is not recommended by the manufacturer (MSI) but I was thinking expansion shouldn't be a huge issue since I keep my home heated/cooled to the same temp year-round. @@tdbone35 You really think they are going to honor a warranty claim? Cmon. Those warranties arent worth the paper they're written on. Even if so they cover material only, not the labor. Tank less water heater is going to save you money over a tanked heater in such a cold climate. However, you will need a high btu unit because the ambient temp of the water coming in is just above freezing (winter time). Hope that helps.
@tardonator
@tardonator 3 года назад
Depending on how cold and where you are, tankless is usually more expensive per gallon than water heater tanks. Tanks can use gas which is cheaper in the US for heating than electricity. There's also heat pump based heaters that are even more efficient and cheaper. There are gas tankless heaters which may be a viable in-between for you. The worst and least efficient would be electric tankless water heaters.

The product you're reviewing is definitely a good product type for areas that go from extreme cold to extreme heat. Which is something New Zealand known for. Heatpump (air conditioner) cant always keep up with our ten seasons in one day whether or compensate for how cold it can get even though the suns so hot that one corner of your house has turned into a greenhouse. There's not too many corners that can be cut when installing flooring in NZ. Even the climate can be different 30mins up the road. As good as the product is for most conditions the movement in them should still be accounted for. With skirting boards off, and a 3mm gap I've had no problems. Basic rule with them is go under whatever you can, don't cut the main field in too tight, and then you'll get away with cutting in the odd bits here and there tight without issues. Video is on point, and reliable information like usual.

@steevejuneau7134
@steevejuneau7134 3 года назад
@@readerchick1 Exactly, that's why we need to compare length wide. Assuming 1/64 inch of dilation per foot, width wise for 6 inch the width will vary by 1/128 inch, which is hard to see. However, lengthwise for 3 feet planks the dilation will be 3/64, almost 1/8 of an inch, that's considerable. That's why long edge never gabs. The dilation is less and there is 36 inch of material to keep the planks together. However, the short edge, the dilation is much bigger and the quantity of material to keep the planks together is much smaller.

I have been saying this for years and every expert floor sales man says "nope you're wrong" told them to do this exact experiment and educate themselves. People love canned responses and if you just say you need an expansion gap for everything its easier to remember and teach. What this really is is lazy education.. Close enough information that if you error on the side of caution it all works, no need to remember anything else. I have always laid my LVT and LVP right to the drywall and have never had an issue yet and if it ever did expand 90% of the time it has space under the drywall!

Great video but keep in mind span limitations are recommended for specific products based off of their tendencies to expand and contract in the manufacturers testing. No expansion gap and each board swells 1/32 of an inch over 64’ and you’ve got 2” of movement. Again some vinyl can do those large spaces but others can’t. Amongst LVP, WPC and SPC there are varying qualities and blends of polymers that affect this. I work in the flooring industry and have seen plenty of vinyl plank installs fail because people felt like their floors couldn’t expand and contract. There’s always the gray area between what it says you should do and what you can get away with, but you usually never find out you took it too far until it’s too late.

Sadly when we added our new 26’ x 30’ addition they already discontinued the style we had. So we went with Cortex vinyl click flooring. Not questioning results here for SPC vinyl. Don’t extrapolate to other flooring materials. For example, Lowes own brand of composite decking expands and contracts a lot, especially the dark “planks” which get very hot (and long), even in Canadian summers! Before installing on a hot, bright day, measure the length of a 12-ft plank early in the morning, then again mid-afternoon after it’s been baking on the deck support system. Then figure out how to deal with movement and with trim at plank ends.

Comes with an underpad attached, was simple to install and straight cuts we done with a speed square and shard razor knife (more difficult cuts were made with a circular saw or rotozip/dremel). I have installed vinyl plank flooring. We love it. My question is how to finish it next to wall? Should I put caulking between the wall and the plank? I am talking about the part that will be covered by th3 baseboard. Same question relates to baseboards? Should I glue it to the wall? Or to the vinyl plank? Logic tells me to glue it to the wall.

Lifeproof installation instructions show 1/4 gap required. Have you considered the structure itself expanding and shrinkage, not the flooring planks itself? I will be adding a gap. Also that oven experiment, well that's a dry heat and humidity is what causes materials to expand not just heat. I enjoy your channel and you have saved me quit a bit of time and money. Thank you

Jeff learning lots from your videos. Just started a kitchen remodeling for we had a leak from the dishwasher and the previous owner had the laminate with mdf backing and a foam padding under it. The padding absorbed all the water and went into the living room underneath the flooring. Letting it all dry out now. Removed all the sub floor in the kitchen for it was old and they originally had 1 foot vinyl tile glued down. What a mess. Will be doing what you said. Main 1/2 plywood is nailed down so I will screw down by all the nails. Put down new sub floor with staples. Like to install the SPC Vinyl you put down in your kitchen but not sure if it is in my budget for we have to do the living room as well. Looking into windows from a outlet near Kingston Ontario Wait for the Ikea Kitchen to go on sale. Once that is purchased will look at joining so I can get more advice, not sure which level I will need to get. Want info on my remodel if I took some pictures for a review and suggestions. Thanks for sharing your work.

You started off on the right track. And in ways your mostly right Then gave some bad info. I represent a flooring manufacturer (one of the largest vinyl flooring companies) who also has to go on warranty claims. We do our own testing and define product limitations in the warrany and install instructions. We look at these specifics when determining a warrany claim. Do not make it easy for us to deny a claim. Listen to the install instructions because if something goes wrong and you did not... it's your money.

HI John. I call BS. I have yet to have a flooring company ever take responsibility for their product. all they do is make fake rules and then use excuses on site as to why it was the installers error.
@johnjr.placzek8368

Flooring manufacturers can not warranty against Stupid or bum installers. Too many times accommodations are made to the home owner for a poorly installed floor, allowing the installer to get off the hook. You are the kind of guy that puts diesel in a gas engine and tells the manufacturer the car shouldn't be so sensitive. Viewers, this is why it is so important to hire a qualified and professional flooring contractor. Amatures such as this guy beleive Rigid Core flooring can be installed over sub floors with minimal prep. If a flooring installer does not mention the amount of prep needed... Run... but it's your money when the claim is denied for shoty work. Some installs would be much better suited with glue down product. But clowns like this wont recommend this as they are not capable.

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY used to manage a lab that tested for carpet stain warranty claims. In some cases, customer paid for one product but a cheaper product was installed by retailer. In other cases, carpet manufacturer did not put stain chemical on carpet at even close to required amount. That said, legitimate claims were covered. Most warranties require professional installation. Having your cousin do it while he's laid off his bartending job usually doesn't fly.

Have seen a few of your informative videos BUT still have a question! We are still in the research process between vinyl and laminate flooring for a kitchen. The question is: 1) in an older house there is sheet vinyl down. 2) we prefer a 12mm laminate with a 2mm attached backing with an AC3 or AC4 rating. 3) the manufacturer claims we can install directly over the sheet vinyl. Please advise that we don’t need a further underlayment OR do we take up the sheet vinyl and use an underpayment. Hope I haven’t confused you as much as I am!

I do like real testing like this, but I also like the tests to be structured carefully. Improvements to this test I would have like to see would be any combination of a) the same test (qualitative) side by side with one of the other products you are saying has a problem with expansion and contraction, b) an actual measurement of the difference seen multiplied out for dimensions of some common room sizes. If it is too small to measure, measure it lengthwise. Without the structure you can ditch the test because in this video we just had to take your word for it that the other materials expand and contract more and that the vinyl expansion and contraction was small enough it wouldn't matter. I love your vids and trust your opinion, but when Physics tells us all materials expand and contract with temperature change and you want to prove it using I test I would like to see you do as good a job using science as you do explaining how to DIY.

I have laminate floor that is 25 feet long. 3 of the 6 inch strips shrink in January enough to make 9 areas where I have 1/8 inch gaps. The rest of the floor doesn’t have this problem. What’s interesting is this is the only 3 lengths that are over my basement and crawl space. Everything else is over one or the other. This week I had the crawl space encapsulated and turned into a conditioned space. It will be interesting if the problem doesn’t show up next year.

You have no idea how many arguments I get into because of this topic. In Canada, the only floor expansion you'll get inside your home is from humidity, not temperature. So anything vinyl won't need any room for expansion. even if you're crazy and go 37 degrees in summer and you set your thermostat for 13 degrees in winter, a 24-degree change won't do shit for expansion/contraction.
@chadleschasin2893
@chadleschasin2893 Год назад
It’s not just the floor that expands and contracts due to thermal it’s the whole building assembly….. it’s why buildings made from multiple buildings materials will always leave expansion and deflection gaps be it expansion gaps in drywall finishes or wall assemblies everything needs room to move and humidity has nothing to do with those ……..
@shane250
@shane250 Год назад
@@chadleschasin2893 Everything needs room, except for plastic (vinyl). These will contact\expand maybe 1mm for every 100m of flooring. Take a plank, measure it in room temp, then put it in your freezer for a day and measure again, then heat your oven to 50⁰c and put it in there for an hour or two and measure again. I guarantee you that you won't see any measurable change. Now for wood flooring, if it's -20⁰ outside, and 25⁰c inside, with 45% humidity, the wood will expand, while the entire house will contact a little (from the cold exterior), so you might have a problem. For LVP, you can leave a 2mm gap and you'll be fine.
