Nope. A detriment to his team due to poor free throw shooting, no real shooting touch, vastly diminished stats in the playoffs, no mamba. Sort of a blend of Shaq and DeAndre Jordan, the best rebounder ever and a defensive force. A great player, he'd still put up big numbers, but nowhere near being the GOAT.

I've heard both Magic and Worthy tell slightly different versions of this story. Each one agreed that Wilt did not allow a single basket. Most of Wilt's quadruple-doubles ARE on film/tape, even though not officially recognized at the time. No matter who your "GOAT" candidate is, pick any ONE of their greatest individual achievements (e.g., "most 50 point games), and chances are that Wilt accomplished it more in ONE SEASON than your "GOAT" did in his CAREER. As Walt "Clyde" Frazier famously noted, “Wilt Chamberlain is the only superman to ever play the game. His records are HILARIOUS. @@charms71 Wilt is a very goal-oriented person, and and under Alex (Hannum) he wanted to win a title and become the first center to lead the league in assists. He liked to pass to Hal Greer or myself, because we just caught it and shot it. Chet Walker usually caught the ball, took a dribble or two and then shot it - no assist for Wilt (under the assist rules of that time). So Wilt preferred to give the ball to us. - Billy Cunningham Wilt went out of his way to chase his assist stats - going as far as to AVOID passing to Hall of Fame teammate Chet Walker because he would most likely not get an assist from Walker under the format of recording assist statistics at the time.

I think wilt played against Russell alone almost as much as shaq did against other Hofers period. And most of the ones Wilt played against were younger and fresher than him. Whereas Shaq got a lot of his games vs hofers against old guard holdovers from the 80s. And pretty sure Wes Unseld was the only hallof fame center Wilt went against that was under 6"9. Unseld was 6"7 super strong and beefy.

Those players were great defenders, great passers, and great scorers depending on their role. When Wilt had great coaches and teammates, he won too. During the years Wilt put up huge numbers, he was asked to be a scorer. That changed when Alex Hannum arrived and the Sixers had outstanding players surrounding Wilt so he didn't have to shoot as much. In LA, the same thing happened when an ex-Celtic great arrived as head coach in Bill Sharman. The truth is, there isn't anything Russell did better than Wilt.

@@Poloskii I really don't know, and I can only rely on what sportswriters of the time wrote. He was capable when he was young of blocking more than 20 in a game, but that was before the 3-pt line, and a most teams wanted to score down low. If Wilt had a grudge against another big guy or two, he would try to really humble them by blocking everything he could. Naturally, he paced himself more when he was in his thirties. Blocked shots we're not an official statistic until just after he retired, so it's damned hard to say. 27 would be just about 1 per 100 seconds, and for that to have happened, it would almost have to have been a contest of stubborn wills between Wilt and his opponent, a grudge match.

Wilt is the greatest athlete in nba history, however, he tends to be lower on people's all time list because he very clearly an openly did not value winning championships as much as pretty much any other player to ever live, even when he joined up with the other two members of the top 3 playoff scorers with West and Baylor he didn't go there to win the titles

It was 8.8 blocks and it was only for his last two years. The players, coaches, and refs back then think he actually averaged about 12-14 for his career.

And that's with stricter assist standards, along with the not-so-well known fact that he, along with other sportswriters, thought the road stat crew shafted him on his assists AND rebounds. I have NUMEROUS accounts of this.

There was a ref who once said that if they called fouls committed by opponents against Wilt by the rules, the game would be over before time since everyone would have fouled out.

6-8, 240lb Paul Silas, coach for the Charlotte Hornets and a former NBA tough guy tells a similar story. He says right near the beginning of the game he was ready to get in a fight with happy Harrison of the Lakers. He said just as he was approaching Harrison, Wilt Chamberlain came over and grabbed him, and turned him around. He said he felt his entire body was being crushed in a vice. He said that Chamberlain then told him we're not going to have any of that today. Paul Silas just looked at him and said, yes sir.

The then-commissioner didn't want to offend Wilt by officially recording blocks in ONLY his last season, so the league waited until his retirement. Crazy but sadly true.

Then again, this would also help Bill Russell's case. Kareem and Nate Thurmond also lost THEIR best blocks years to that decision.
