The Try from the End of the World - NZ commentary

2nd test, NZ vs France 1994. Jean Luc Sadourny scores a great length of the field effort to give France the series 2-0 at the death
I posted the longer version with the local commentary. A young Jonah Lomu was in his second test I think in this game.

You have also a beautiful french try in Twickie against England, in 1991 5N Eng vs Fr... after a failed penalty kick for England, the french decide to try from their own goal camp... pure gem too... we call it the try of the Century... french didn't won the match but they won the respect of the english crowd as well, and the crowd roar of pleasure all along the try making by the French... awesome ! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XlQpVUWq2gw.html

I was at that match, about 5 rows behind the AB coaching staff & reserves . The groan when Bachop’s kick stayed live & was picked up by Saint Andre was so loud. Typical French flair and do-or-die tactics in the closing minutes to score a memorable try and win the series . This was also the first series that a young Jonah Lomu played in the AB jersey and the vastly experienced French side kept him quiet.

I rate this above 'that' try by the barbarians by 'that' man in Cardiff 1973. The baa-baas game was an exhibition match, it was more or less straight after kick off, at Cardiff Arms Park, where the team was made almost entirely of Welshmen (I think only John Pullen was the only non-Welshman to touch the ball). - this try was to win a tour to New Zealand, at Eden Park, in the closing minutes of a game, and there are no questionably forward passes... oh, and by the way, I'm Welsh

One of the profoundest moments in rugby sporting history .. Phillipe Saint Andre should be entitled to rugby sporting immortality to run the ball from his own line in the circumstances .. sure, Phil Bennett did the same in that famous NZ/Barbarian game in 1973 , but that was only an "exhibition" .. and what is more he so politely hung around after the game to do the obligatory TV interviews, when it was so clear that all he wanted to do was join in the join in the sublime "joy" of the team in its celebration . Go France for the 2021 World Cup! Make rugby artistically exciting again!!

To my mind, what is so amazing about this try - like the other extra-ordinary try that the Barbarians scored against the All-Blacks in 1973 - is that two of the best players in rugby history (Gibson and Sella who played in those games) could not get a piece of the action. And I suspect it was because those tries were so "out of the box" for their times that even their superb skills and sense of anticipation and positioning etc could not get them into the picture.!

I miss 90s rugby. It was much simpler with not so many silly rules to clutter it. Friday - December 18, 2020.

The times when France's movement trough the field was dictated by "search the hand pass". You only can do such a high speed score only with hand passes and ball in hand, the dominance France had of his own style (risky because a loss othe ball could be a disaster) against the power of other teams was a nightmare at the same time. France was speed, unfortunately not anymore.

Love that this try has its own name: "L'essai du bout du monde" ("The Try from the End of the World", as in the title)

For the record the players involved in this epic try are (in order of appearance): Philippe Saint Andre (11 & current France coach), Christophe Deylaud (10) to Abdelatif Benazzi (8) to Emile Ntamak (14) to Laurent Cabannes (7) to Philippe Sella (13) to Guy Accoceberry (9) to Jean-Luc Sadourny (15 & try scorer)!!! Side note: That same French team lost to Canada in Canada before traveling to NZ and beating the All Blacks twice.

how pleasant is to see Accoceberry giving the pass, when he could dive beyond the line, just to assure the try to be scored. True rugby spirit, the team before the player

Very kind from you Richard - Sadly the point is that Rugby is less popular in France those days and loses 10000 licenses each year! In fact what we call "French Team" those days is "South West French Team"! Only 20% of the country (I would even say less) is playing Rugby: The south West mountains. Don't ask me why. I love Rugby myself. Maybe an "old fashioned" image for the youngsters today? This sport is great and I hope some day my country will love it again!
