I realized why you chose Turkey when you provided the map portraying spheres of cultural influence between the EU and Middle East. My brain must be fried to have realized this now. Their perspective in modern world history must be priceless.
It makes our perspective relatively objective against both the West and the East but it also divides the country even harder than the democrats and the republicans are. However that's possible.
That would be true if our education system would let citizens of our country to build such an outgoing view to the modern world. This is ironic: While this current party in power go against Atatürk′s ″mind your own business″ principle and chase influence in Europe and Middle East, the average Turkish citizen′s view of the modern world became narrower and narrower to the point it's fixated on Erdoğan′s views or opposition′s reactions to those views, dependent on what kind of family and environment the citizen in question has been born into and grew up in. The modern world is becoming evermore polarized in the hands of nationalism rising in almost everywhere and the geopolitics of Turkey could build the perfect view of modern societies′ problems and their solutions on its citizens′ mind. But sadly, the only people who can benefit from others′ experiences are the brightest ones, and such a person′s name has been mentioned in the first episode: Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The very education system whose foundations he had built himself (Atatürk wrote the first geometry textbook in the country) has been changed so much, now it's a machine that spits out students to take extra 2-4 years in universities only to find themselves in the ever growing army of the unemployed. So all a university graduate in here can think about is whether they can ever feed themselves. There is hardly any place for priceless perspectives on the modern world history on their minds.
Being from the Ozarks... Our region is very complicated for the few people that live here. For as young as our history is. When talking about social issues they are very complex for what they are. Then again that can almost be for every country/region.

Several corrections i wish to make: For the first years of AKP, Erdoğan was just a figurehead. Over the years he took control of the party, kicking out his old allies and filling the party with loyalists. That's when he started to rule Turkey with his own ideology and Turkey changed course, while also taking credit for the developments in the first years of AKP. Presidential System does have limitations, a person can be elected as presidently only twice, it's in the constitution. He theorically can't stay in power forever. Erdoğan did not.want to change law according to sharia. That bill about rape was a pardoning of statuory rapes for some if they were married. The reason was that many people in the less developed countrysides still marry with minors (unoffical marriages, age of consent is 18 in Turkey, many of those girls at age 15-17 and their husbands barely above 18). These people ended up getting imprisoned for statuory rapes after many years of their marriage. Many wives of such men demanded release of their husbands. Young turkish people don't necessarily lean towards left, they simply start to resemble their European counterparts, many Turkish youngsters are openly atheist but their opinions would be considered right wing in Europe. 2016 coup was staged by Gulen, not by Kemalists. It's a fact. After the purge, many kemalists who were imprisoned in the Ergenekon trials returned back to their positions. I would say the army is more kemalist than before 2016, but they would not risk staging a coup. Erdoğan is an islamist who wishes to be caliph, but he can only convince the capabable men to take action if the action would pragmatically benefit Turkey. That's why Turkey's intentions are always blurred, if Turkey follows islamist ideology or just uses religion for its own interests. No matter how strong Erdoğan is, he cannot just send army to wherever he wishes. Turkey and Iran have OK relations. Turks and Iranians have nothing against each other. Turkey dislikes the Iranian engagement in the ME but nevertheless both countries have an understanding coming from historic and cultural ties.
@@TheReaper569 wdym, it's the truth. and it's the one topic about turkey that the west is extremely confused and ill-informed about. seemed weird to me that this channel completely dropped the gülen plotline that was built from the previous video and breezed past that coup attempt with a half-assed explanation. there was also no mention of 17-25 december events that heavily damaged erdoğan's (and akp's) public image.
@@kaanaytar4793 that i agree this video is really not that accurate. What i disagree with is that the army is now more kemalist than before. They purged kemalist soldiers as well. Not only officers mere soldiers following orders who didn't know why they were there were put to prisons.
another detail that wasn't mentioned in the video: -during the aftermath of the coup attempt, erdoğan created a nationwide paranoia, as he accused his criticizers of being a "fetöcü". this resulted in various dissident journalists or authors being locked up (i guess he did kinda mention that bit in the video, after all one thing everyone knows about turkey is the locked up journalists). the weird thing is that the akp voter demographic was very fond of fetö during their prime while everyone else called akp out for giving gülen and his men enormous influence and power. after the coup, all of a sudden akp voters became the most zealous haters of gülen movement.
@@kaanaytar4793 also let's remember that during the pandemic all the thieves, murderers, rapists were let go from prisons. But the journalists and soldiers and other political prisoners were not granted a leave. 2 months ago my house was rubbed by a gang of previously imprisoned thieves..
I was enlisted in the Cyprus army at the time the 2016 coup happened, and every single higher up in the ranks at the time was sure the coup was a sham. Apart from the reported cases of soldiers being told that its a drill and not a coup, which might happen in an actual coup, what gave it away in their opinion was that they didn't cut the country's telecommunications. According to them, the first thing you should do in a modern coup, if you are not a complete moron or pretending to coup, is to cut the telecommunications network of the country. The fact that the coup was ongoing and Erdogan was publicly skype calling the Turkish ppl announcing he is fine, plus the fact that not a single one of Erdogan's administration was arrested during the coup, kinda gives it away as a sham coup to give Erdogan a reason to arrest opposition and do a rapid cleanse of the army ranks.
@Furkan8k that was the reason. I don't know if the ringleaders of the coup thought it as genuine or just pendent to make a coup, but I believe that the coup was a very well directed provocation. The reason? What followed it. The concentration of all powers of the Turkish state and the silencing of all dangerous opposition.
The telecommunications wasn't cut off because the coup attempt was conducted earlier then on planned time, due to coup plans leaking and coup plotters getting cold feet. Just because you can't answer some 'though' questions doesn't mean it was a fake coup attempt.

@Lord Ball-sac the 2nd they've lived in Novi Pazar for while longer. Not really of Saudi disposition, in fact Iran was the first large provider of weapons and funding. @@mehmetgurdalHere in the USA we don't believe that it is the government's responsibility to take care of the people. It’s unreasonable the amount of time an effort this man puts in, just for me to listen while I work and be calm an educated. We take the age we live in for granted, I just feel so lucky to be able to listen to someone allll the way in Europe who is also educated. I believe this is THE apex of education an knowledge sharing right now.
Just wow. As a 20 year old turkish guy, i can easily say that this documentary is the most objective and the most accurate thing about turkey i have seen in my entire life. It has to be a mandatory lesson in schools.
@@cybershadow136 If i remember he is not bilingual. Most people in Europe can speak 2 or even more languages (for me: german, english, spanish, learning french). You need to at least learn one (not native) language to the extend of beeing able to have a fluent conversation to pass school. It is even common for people to speak fluent russian (DDR/GDR had mandatory russian).
@@foty8679 That's an over-generalization, Europe isn't a single entity and every country has different education systems and approaches on learning foreign or regional languages, if you go in France you'll find few who will speak another language besides French, same goes in Italy or many countries in East Europe (unless these are from the ethnic minorities of these countries). Wealthier and more open nations (with few exceptions) are on the other hand more multilingual, northern Europeans are highly proficient in English for example. And lastly there's a generational difference, younger people speak more languages that old people, this is more evident in southern and eastern Europe (excluding those who had access to higher education, who were a minority back then).
I love the fact that non turks get to have such a deep insight into turkish society and the turkish mindset in politics instead of the dumbed down narrative of western media...
So much has happened recently, with the evros border crisis, the standoff of Greek and Turkish navies for the eez in the east med, turning agia sofia into a mosque and now a potential full out war between Armenia and Azerbaijan that i feel that i wanted to see more. However, it is one of the best if not the best documentary series i have ever seen, you have done an amazing job.

It's crazy how Turkeys 20th century history is kind of similar to Argentina 20th century history, me being an Argentinian, some things you talked about on (mostly) the last two videos ressembled a lot to the history of my country. I'm glad that i've encountered this channel, i love your videos!
Some other Argentinian user also mentioned these similarities. Would you like to recommend some works? With English subtitles or commentary if it's a video?
good morning. But come and tell this to our so called "secularists". Their Brain dont work, sorry but it is so. Without Erdogan, Turkey would be today a 3rd world country, maybe divided in several pieces.

I better give you a little notice; This video consist of extreme misunderstanding of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's ideology. I would recommend you to read Nutuk (which is a book he wrote about the years of The Turkish War Of Independence and years following that where many reforms were made and a secular, modern Turkish Republic was formed). It seems obvious that this guy either didn't read the book or he is simply manipulating the facts to prove a point. Let me start with pinpointing some of the mistakes he (Kraut) made. First of all, before Atatürk (In the Ottoman Empire) people from different religions or different national identities weren't treated equal or even wasn't set to be equal against law. Which was later changed by Atatürk (we are talking about early 20th centruy so at that time colored people weren't allowed to enter many events in the "egaliter" USA). So Kemalism isn't about just being Turks and not being anything else. Atatürk's nationalism is based on the national identity (language and folklore etc) of Turkey but not as a religous or racial concept which would've divide the country, it's quite the oppposite, it's about unifying the people of Anatolia(which majoritly spoke Turkish) against external and schismatic threats which were boosted by imperialistic passions of our enemies during and after the great war. Also calling Atatürk an isolationist is near dellusional if not completely ignorant ( pls google the sadabat pact and earlier attempts to establish an Europen Union) as he actually set a route for Turkey which was heading west whilst establishing a peaceful relation with it's eastern neighboors. And about the minority problems: Kraut seemingly doesn't understand the challanges of the time, you may thing landlords and bandits are merely a deal of the medieval times if you leave in a developed country but after the war of independence Turkey faced a real problem on it's south-eastern region. Local authorities were revolting against the central goverment to keep their powers since they knew modernisation and reforms in their region would mean a farewell to their unrightfully claimed power so they used propaganda to turn our Kurdish brothers against us. So Atatürk had to take some hard measures, sometimes even having to use military rule in some counties. And even then he didn't insult Kurds or Armenians as a whole. People of Turkey had to fight in terrible conditions to keep their lands. For instance their villages were burned by schismatic Armenians who acted with hatred against Turks with the manipulation of their orthodox Russian friends. So sadly but naturally a hatred against Armenians was born. It's not Atatürk's policies that made people anti-Armenian in Turkey. The Kemalism you are talking about isn't Atatürk's ideology, it's what far right nationalist try to make him seem like. Anyone who lives in my country and has Greek, Armenian, Kurd roots is welcome by people like me who were inspired by how many great things Atatürk made in such a short amount of time as long as they don't insult my nation, it's leader and what this country stands for: Yurtta Sulh Cihanda Sulh ( Peace in our motherland and peace in the world). Thank you for reading this looong comment :D.
The guy is an ignorant orientalist. He brands Atatürk as racist and isolationist, quite contrary, he tried to take Mosul, was almost declaring war against France over Hatay in French Syrian Mandate. He created his own set of alliances like Balkan Entente and Sadabad Pact against great powers. Hell if you dig enough you can find a few documents about how he envisioned to help Spanish Republicans during Spanish civil war. Inverventionism to preserve stability and power of balance≠expansionism. Even today we the kemalists have no desire to expand. And our nationalism is not based upon sofcore racism like many European countries, it's based upon French civic nationalism, hence Turks with many different backgrounds (Georgian, Circassian, Kurd, Albanian etc.) represented. Of course he went against islamic fundamentalism and anti-westernism (not in a political context) as they bring no good to us. I'm tired of dumb fucks with little understanding portray themselves as quasi experts in topics like this. Like, it's okay to be not informed, but it's not okay to spread misinformation.
@@rep227Mixture of 2 Turkish, 1 Kurdish, and 1 Arab grandparent here! It's based on civic nationalism indeed, I define myself as "Turkish" not because I'm 50 percent a Turk but because "How happy is the one who says I am a Turk" motto of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
kemalism do not work at all .. it was a good idea and at 1930s it was ok but now you cannot run a country with kemalism. Erdogan smashed 80 years of kemalist republic with his 19 years of his power , what are you talking about? (but he couldn't smash it at all because of votes) atatürkün en çok güvendiği yer olan türk askeri bile ayasofyada atatürke lanet okunurken anıtkabirin resmini paylaşıp sonra da "yaşanan şeylerle alakası yoktur , rutindir önceden ayarlanmıştır başka yerlere çekmeye çalışmayın türk askeri asla saygısızlık etmez" diye açıklama yapan türk askeri de kalmadı gibi bir şey ne yazık ki , genç askerler veya subaylar vs tabi ki kemalist ama ben bugün için konuşuyorum gelecek için değil , bu askerler büyüyüp rütbe atlaması falan uzun sürecek

@isak the upshot in Northern African slave trade has its origin from the first Libyan War's conclusion (2011, after the void of power left by a collapsed Ganddafi regime), exacerbated by the European Migrant crisis (2014), instability in the region, and the 3-ways power struggle of the second Libyan civil war (also 2014). This, coupled with the fact that reports on slavery in Libya have only started to take up since 2014 (after a hiatus in Libyan slave trade since the second world war) suggest that social and economic destruction is a cause of the rise in demand for slave labor. So no, I don't think under Gandaffi's regime (where free public education is free and compulsory for both sexes, and percapita in come is the fifth highest for any African state, and an emphasis on social welfare and local labor force) has need or overwhelming incentives for slave labor.

Honestly turkey is one of the most interesting countries to me. From a sliced and diced runt state divided by the British, french, greeks, and Italians turkey best everyone and United the Turks into a single nation. Kraut has been able to put every single to think I needed to know about Turkey into the videos he makes. While I may not agree 100% I still appreciate the dedication and care he's put into his videos. As someone who has studied Turkey and the Islamic religion despite being a protestant I find it one of the most interesting and impacting countries of all time. Turkey being the bridge to both Europe and Asia it's been one of the most influential countries and concerning geopolitics is a very important nation. As of now I have no idea where the country is going but I wish the best for the people and country.
Best everyone but not really. All strong European powers take a neutral stance and don, t fight against Turkey. Her opponents were only Greece and Armenia and even then Turkey win only because of Soviet Russia's help that Ataturk himself said. And with United turns part you a bit wrong. By the end of the independence war in Turkey were too many Greeks, Armenians, poetic Greeks, kurds, and Assyrians for Ataturk liking so with some population exchanges he commanded the genocides that the official Turkish government denies to nowadays.

@MetalBucket, It's one of those rare instances where France did the right thing in foreign policy, I too was shocked. Although I wish France would show the same moral standing in their relations with Africa, especially North Africa. They seemed all too willing to nudge America toward destroying Libya for no good reason. Seems to me France was only against the Iraq war because they had nothing to gain from it. If they had something to gain, they'd be fueling the fires of war harder than anyone.
@Orion3227 Sarkozy is more the norm with French leaders than the outlier. Macron's foreign policy is just as insane if not more so than Kozy's. This is what France produces, destabilizing figures which destroy entire nations and plunge millions of people into misery. This has to stop, someone needs to clip France's wings.
