"The Turtle Story" is a Native American accounting of how earthquakes occur, told by storyteller and USC alumna Jacque Tahuka-Nunez (tribal descendant of the Acjachemen Nation), filmed by SCEC UseIT interns. The story comes from the Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe, a California Indian Tribe also known as the San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians. This project is part of the "Native California is Earthquake Country" partnership between SCEC and the Sherman Indian High School in Riverside, CA. Jacque is also the director of Journeys to the Past (www.journeystot...) which seeks to educate and enlighten others to our precious culture while encouraging them to capture their own heritage.
Storyteller: Jacque Tahuka-Nunez
Song: Gabrielino-Tongva Ancestor Song
Musician/Singer: Virginia Carmelo (Gabrielino-Tongva tribal member)
Filmed and edit by: David Bolen, Jonathan Ho, Ben Anderson (SCEC UseIT Interns)
Set Design: Ed Nunez, Lawrence Garcia
Executive Producers: Dr. Robert de Groot, Helen Corral-Bonner
Special Thanks: Sherman Indian High School
A production of Southern California Earthquake Center.

Clearly understood plate tectonics long long ago. We need to listen and incorporate these stories. What a wonderful story.

All ancient civilizations understood this world and universe more than we give them credit for. You are talking to this day still some of the great mapping of the stars. Some of the greatest feats of engineering still unreplicated today. I truly believe our ancestors knew more than we do today and we should genuinely listen to what they had to teach

Never ignore ancient local legends involving natural disasters. When the Indonesian quake/tsunami hit, one old isolated tribe survived (no one died despite the village being destroyed). In their culture they believe the earth rests on a giant tree. Sometimes demons come and shake the tree, causing earthquakes. If they shake very hard, the land and sea gods can fight over territory due to the disturbance. The best thing to do after a strong quake, and see the waves retreat, was to run to the highest parts of the land. Then wait about 24hours till the land and sea gods come to a peace agreement after the battle. The land and sea boundaries will be changed........ AMAZING HOW ANCIENT STORIES LIKE THIS MIRROR ACTUAL SCIENTIFIC EVENTS SOMETIMES! Especially the advice so many need to know.

Geologists are now examining old Native American legends to get a better understanding of areas geological histories. The Pacific Northwest tribes legends of the Great Killer Whale and the Thunderbird battles coincide well with tsunami/ massive earthquake events! Heck older legends, specifically near Oregon, tell of when a brave warrior defeated an ever erupting volcano........surrounding the Oregon Crater Lake. The legend is found to describe the before, during, and after effects of the volcano's eruption, even describing the collapse. Never discredit local ancient legends. There is a grain of truth to most of them!

In 1500, the Spanish writer Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo wrote a book about a Muslim queen warrior known as Califia. Its name derives from the Arabic word "Khalifah", leader of meaning, which was pronounced "Califa" in Spanish. Montalvo has named the land of it "California", which means "Land of Califia". When the Spaniards explored the coast of Baja California,

None of what you said makes sense.. he wrote a book about a Muslim queen when he was exploring the native colonies.. unless I'm missing something that makes no sense.. what Muslim queen, from where? Why did he name the land area of the natives after her, what's the correlation?

While this blog refers to the specific place name of Misión Vieja or Old Mission as the first European site established in Los Angeles County, there was thousands of years of habitation in the area by the native indigenous peoples. While these first settlers are often called Gabrieleño (or Gabrieliño), because of their "association" with the Mission San Gabriel, which started at Misión Vieja in 1771 but relocated to the current site within a few years because of flooding from the San Gabriel River, a more recent appellation has been Tongva. This latter term, however, has no real historical basis, whereas the name Kizh does have a legitimacy in the record and will be used here. For example, in William McCawley's 1996 book, The First Angelinos, he cites the statement of Raimundo Yorba, who was a consultant to the archaeologist John P. Harrington stated to him that the natives living in the Old Mission area were "what they called a Kichireño, one of a bunch of people that lived at that place just this side of San Gabriel which is known as the Misión Vieja. Kichireño is not a placename, but a tribename, the name of a kind of people." While the Kizh/Gabrieleño, like most so-called pre-literate peoples throughout the world, did not have a written language, they, naturally, had an oral one. This, in turn, meant that there was a vast oral record passed down through the generations among the Kizh/Gabrieleño, having to do with their religious beliefs, history, cultural and social practices, and much else. The fact that these attributes were not written down do not, in any way, make them subordinate to the written word-it is simply a different way of recording. www.gabrielenoindians.org
