Hey Josh, can you comment on a flat forehand release? Start horizontal and end horizontal follow through?
@OverthrowDiscGolf
@OverthrowDiscGolf Год назад
Sure. These are going to be either minimally low to high or minimally high to low with adjustments being made by the waist bend for the most part. In other words they are either tiny hyzer flips or tiny S curves. Another way of saying this is that if you bend over enough at the waist an anhyzer forehand becomes a flat forehand.

I really appreciate this explanation. I’m forehand dominant and I know from personal experience that when using proper form, forehand isn’t any more injury-prone than backhand. But I’ve never been able to articulate what motion has the potential to cause pain.

Comming from a tennis background, my forehand was developed wayyyy before my backhand throw. This video was a great watch and a great help to understand what I should be doing.

Awesome stuff. I've been having trouble pronating my wrist on certain throws, which causes my Insanity to flip and die left on me. It's good to see why that's happening, because on my hyzer flips I'm starting low and finishing low. Can't wait to go out and practice that shot again!

Imo hyzer flips in general generates more lift/requires more nose up to fly properly(tough for downhill shots). On the other hand, hyzer flips usually require a slightly understable disc that will glide further left to right (for righty's) than an over stable disc that just dumps. Love the video! ♥️

Can you guys speak to the "swoopiness" of the forehand? I see a lot of players starting with their forearms flexed up, by the shoulder, and then as they go to throw swooping it down low so the hand releases the disc below the elbow. It seems to add power at the expense of being less accurate and feeling pretty bad on the elbow. Chris Clemons and Calvin Heimburg seem to have a "swoopy" forehand, compared to Kevin Jones, who has a more "body lag," low-swinging forehand. What do you guys think about this? Loved the video!
@OverthrowDiscGolf
@OverthrowDiscGolf Год назад
The forehand windup is a loop that you level out a bit at the hit. The loop can be a downward loop looking like a swoop before the upswing

There is a 3rd type of forehand that is true flat release, and it uses the disc stability to do the fade at the end. This style is used in disc golf more for neutral slow discs when the person has to throw forehand due to where they are and something in often in the way of the throw. There are 2 --3 types of grip, the power 2 finger, power 3 finger, and open 2 finger. I say 2--3 forehand grips because the power 2 and 3 are basically the same thing just adding a finger for stability with smaller hands. There is an older over top the disc thumber style forehand that is not used anymore because this was mainly used with what are now putter molds in the 1980's and works mainly with mostly neutral putter molds but can work with some midrange that are nearly neutral too that have a deep rim, I have tried the forehand thumber and it does work with the slower less OS midrange and most putters.

Nice video! The explanation on how to finish depending on the style is great. I have a lot of trouble getting the hyzer sidearm to push forward instead of up. Also my lefty backhand is naturally pretty good and way more consistent and comfortable than my righty sidearm. Any advice on which I should focus?
@smileyboy2700
@smileyboy2700 Год назад
From my advice, who hurt his elbow due to too much FH or wrong technique, idk but I was throwing max effort that day and hurt myself. I would focus on left BH if it's better than your righty FH, safer option than FH anyways.
@MichaCnk
@MichaCnk Год назад
@@smileyboy2700 Thanks for the insight. The higher risk of injury with the sidearm is a good point that always made me a bit cautious. For scramble shots the lower power sidearm is probably something to have in the bag but for higher power the lefty BH is definitely safer.

Can you discuss which of these two forehands might work best when throwing up and down a steep hill? You mentioned it a little bit on the first hole you threw on the course. I’ve found if I’m throwing down a steep hill I want a VERY overstable disc on anyhyzer or close to flat, because the throw picks up speed as it drops down the hill, causing it to act less stable. But I almost never try to throw downhill with a hyzer angle regardless of stability, because it is so hard not to release a hyzer angle flat, up, or with a little nose up angle, especially when throwing down a steep hill. Does this make sense to anyone else?
@reedcole5780
@reedcole5780 Год назад
Not to me. It depends on the hole, the more downhill you are throwing the more time the disc has to fade, so a straighter disc is usually what I go with. I've never experienced any extra acceleration from throwing downhill, the disc is flying not dropping.

This is like saying "there are 2 different types of backhand throws, hyzer and anhyzer" as if throwing flat is not in the realm of possibilities. I can appreciate trying to simplify for a beginner approach and of course agree that single angle throws are the most consistent, but abandoning the fundamental of a flat release confuses me.

@Something_offensive_
@Something_offensive_ Год назад
If you want 400 ft hyzer distance, you gotta 1. Trust your disc 2. Time your weight transfer, so that you put whatever body weight you have INTO the shot. (You should almost feel a spring up of the ground upon your release) 3. HIPS FIRST. Rotate those things and plant that front foot before you even think about bringing your elbow through next, and disc is the last thing to cross your waist area. 4. Last thing and first thing to a power forehand shot is an active wrist. You should have the same wrist motion as you have when someone suggests a mediocre restaurant and you tell them to "get that shit outta here" and slap away their idea. It's an OVER EXAGGERATED wrist movement. And 5. (At least for me) Think baseball.. I have had slo-mo video taken of my forehand form, and the disc is mostly a baseball for 90% of the throw, until the milliseconds right before and during the release, then the follow through is baseball form again. For reference, I have thrown 450 ft golf shots in round, range finder verified. So, hope those tips help, I'm going to go back to being another guy on the internet now.
