It's amazing that there are canonical ships in the original Star Wars trilogy that are completely neglected. Come explore a completely unexplored ship of the Rebel Alliance! Brought to you by 130 amazing fans on Patreon! / echenry
@@LICVIGO yeah but it's really fascinating how legends writers were able to create so many stories for these ships after the fact. Legends canon had a really natural growth to it when it was first being formed. I miss those days...
Probably one of my favourite things about Star Wars HAS to be the ships. These types of vids are incredible and all I do now my Lego is make custom ship designs.
*Request:* in the movies we see the nebulon b frigate as a medical frigate with very little armament. Could we possibly see *your* rendition of a fully armed nebulon b frigate complete with 24 fighter hangar bay?
@@christophernemeth421 I've heard that one. I also know that in the x-wing games, it had an internal hangar bay. I've also heard that there were multiple different builds for the nebulon b as they were produced by multiple different shipyards. I'd really like to see EC Henry's take on it, since he has a gift for proportioning these ships properly with his software. And his fidelity is amazing...
I've never heard of the Nebulon B having more than a single squadron - In the Novel "X-wing Wraith Squadron" for example, there is an Imperial Nebulon B (Under Warlord Zinji), that had a compliment that only consisted of a single squadron of basic TIE-Fighters.
@@JonarusDraconius in the thrawn books, they carry 24. In some of the reference materials that I've read, they say that the empire designed them to carry 1 squadron of TIEs but the rebels were able to take advantage of deep storage inside the ship and expand that to 2 squadrons.
@@butterhat1938 Figures that the number would be Alliance specific... I mean, in the same book I just quoted, they managed to further modify an already modified CR-90 corvette to cram pretty much a full squadron of X-wings into it (The Imperial complement of this 'pocket carrier' having been a mere 4 TIEs).
This series is still one of the coolest and most earnestly passionate projects I've ever seen and it honestly gives me a drive to continue creating as an artist as well, thank you.
Wow, this ship was just featured in Marvel Star Wars #7, but without any of the re-imagining you did here. It seems the artist had access to the same original model.
@@thewiseguy01_71 It was not named in the comic, but you can find it on the very first page of "Star Wars (2020) #7: The Will of Tarkin part I". Wookieepedia just calls it "Unidentified Rebel Alliance vessel".
Saw "Ugliest" and "Star Wars" in the title. Thought it was about an ugly (a ship pieced together from other ship bits). Not too far off, as it turns out . . .
You made an ugly lump of greeblies into an interesting retrofitted support carrier. I loved the package of A-wings stacked in the hangar. It's also much more interesting visually as well. Bravo!
I think your almost there but the VERY human desire for ballance is a step in the wrong direction. Look at the Falcon that is also not a symmetrical design so it doesn't need to be either. also the HUGE fin under the hull would present problems on landing since there is no proper sense of scale in the shots of the ship we have no real idea of how big it is though it looks like you have done a little too much squaring off as well. To me it looks much more of a capital ship tug With Vast Retro engines and cooling fins for the repulsor engines. For when you need to get that Frigate or Cruiser into dock for repairs but cant guarantee that outlaw station has one on hand.
yes, you are right, the falcon is not symmetrical. but it also looks good! he even said that the asymmetrical design was awkward to build on. in the end, he found it important
I would love to see a video on each and every one of these filler ships introduced in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Mainly in the hopes of Lucasfilm canonizing these ships so that they can be used in the tabletop wargame known as Star Wars: Armada.
You certainly incorporate alot of real life military vehicle components. It makes the things look a lot less alien. Impresive work though. Most impressive.
I really love how you take these completely obscure background designs in Star Wars, and not just flesh them out, but give them a look that fits entirely within Star War's aesthetics. Your Mon Calamari frigate is probably among my most favorite designs!
Video Request: I wonder if it's possible to convert the various Star Trek Discovery Ship designs into more "TOS" looking vessels while maintaining the uniqueness of the designs themselves.
I can’t believe it has been half a decade since I first watched this video! Still looks amazing and is so entertaining to watch. I will always love your work especially the fan lore back stories. Much love and God bless you EC Henry
EC, 4 years later and I still find myself enthralled by these vids. Awesome job. I have a couple of ideas for you... 1) Star Trek Miranda (TMP) in Star Wars. Kitsune's Science Fiction Conversions says this class carries 12 interceptors, 12 attack sleds, 6 fighters, and 4 shuttles... a bit much I think. 2) Star Trek Galor (TNG/DS9) in Star Wars. 3) HMS Victory and USS Constitution done in Star Wars style.
Request: The Nonnah from Rogue Squadron would be a good idea for a neglected Rebel vessel. Is it possible to see it in its prime before it crashed on Chorax?
I am loving your renders of these background ships! I don't want to be that guy, but I would love to see your interpretation of the Starhawk Battleship since there is no official images and very few fan art designs. Keep up the amazing work my friend!
Henry what do you use to model all your ships / texture them? they are incredible, i use 3dsmax and wish to develop my skills even more, so some insight would go a long way for me. Great video and an epic creation, great work.
As soon as I saw this ship sketch(0:50) I immediately thought of the Freelancer Barracuda Bounty Hunter fighter's vertical fin. It surprised me that so many different franchises have very similar design elements!
As you described the Queen Mola, I can imagine it missing it's lower fin in the movie due to supply. Because the fin isn't needed for radiation control, it was removed to give the ship a smaller profile and scrapped to give other ships more armor.
I really adore your design ideas. They look SO much starwarsy, so much more than anything that we got since the prequels. I'd love to see those ships in a Tie-Fighter-style Star Wars game or even a space game where you could fly and manage those ships in an epic strategic Space Sim.
“Needlessly giving a backstory to every bit of junk, and neither ignoring the real-world reasoning nor pretending it invalidates the possibility of an in-universe backstory but actually using all the information given, real and fictional, to form a story that’s interesting on its own and seems to fit in canon” is what Star Wars is all about. That’s not quoting anyone, I just figured the quotes were the only way of telling where the complex subject ended.
Nice, mate. It was interesting to read the original cut of the Endor battle, all the things removed and uses of ships and fighters. Seeing these background ships brought to life is really great.
I love seeing all interpretations of Corellian designs. Go nuts see what you can come up with that only uses a single element from the Falcon. It's a cool exercise. Great channel. Thank you.
Yes more of this! I've been asking multiple star wars tubers. But I think you're my man. Even your smarts of starwars tastes into the details. Perfect.
Conversation between two rebel officers: "How do we convert civilian ships into fighter carriers?" "Just shove some A-Wings in there, those things are tiny."
These are my favorite of your videos. Your designs are so true to the original trilogy's style. It's fantastic, and I hope one day some of your renderings are made canon.
Hey EC can you compare the SDF-1 Macross to the Galactiga( both 1979 and reimagined) as well as other "not so well known" sci-fi capital ships. As its sometimes hard to just see how big a certain ship is without context.
I want those Bombers to Fight like the millennium falcon. Acting like fast Gun boats. that can take hits. I wish they did that and had them escort the millennium falcon on an attack run. :)
@@TheBrickGuy7939 Not if You gave them Proper armor, Shields and Engines. You know, like any decent combat ship. But Sadly, The way they were in the Movie. They were no Different then Tug boats or Sand Barges. Or Row Boats Loaded with explosives. They were most likely civilians ships. Just loaded with bombs. That's the only reason I can think of. why they were so worthless.
The rad shielding on this ship could also mask lifeforms and materials from scanners, making it perfect for covert ops, smuggling commandos, saboteurs or starfighters as EC demonstrates, behind enemy lines Not a pretty ship, but an efficient ship. I can absolutely see the crew of this former hazardous waste transport having developed a gallows humour from the dangerous work of redubbed Queen Moira both before and after her acquisition by the Rebel Alliance
I'd like to see you just go ham and come up with a trio of ships of your own that aren't from the movies, but follow the spirit of Star Wars ship design.
These videos are so cool. Tbh I never even really noticed these ships when I watched the movies, but now I'd love to see them in some capacity on the big or small screen. Even in comic books would be cool.
A video going into the details of a kit-bashed ship prop would be most interesting. I spent a lot of time building models when I was a kid, and as much time as I could in hobby shops looking at models, all around the time the original Star Wars was released. There is a decent chance I'm familiar with at least some of the parts used because the models I built were the ones on the shelves when the movie came out.
Haha kindred spirit this man is. Before the game switched to 2.0, I was big into X-Wing miniatures table top game. I loved to modify my large but mostly rebel collection of ships. Some of them I based on mystery ships in the movies, altering existing models into weird shapes. A shuttle that the Vcx (ghost) freighter can hold, I made a ship very similar, but much smaller than the ship in this video. Love your videos, can't get enough
Love this content as it justifies and fuels our own "fan fiction" and imaginations. Love the flashing out story and big doff of the cap to your previous vid featuring the Mon Cal frigate which is similar to a design of my own.
I really love your work, and revisit these videos from time to time, just to get excited about the creativity. I've been thinking about why the G-58 in Empire Strikes Back might have lost that lower fin underneath it. I found myself asking, "how would this thing land to pick up radioactive materials to transport?" It occurred to me that this type of ship might not be permitted to land on a planet's surface for fear of contaminating it with highly dangerous radiation. I figured that such a ship might stay in orbit, and smaller transport shuttles would do the loading and unloading work. Skip forward to their being retrofitted by the Rebel Alliance, and suddenly that inability to land might prove a problem. Having to refit a ship in orbit, and loading and unloading equipment and supplies, suddenly becomes a real challenge, particularly for an organisation that's trying to keep a low profile. Adding a landing gear might become a really valuable addition. In addition, now that it's no longer hauling radioactive materials, two large fins might be far more than is needed to cool and regulate the hangar bay. One might be sufficient to do the job. I wonder if the Alliance might have cut off the lower fin to add a landing gear, giving it a really ungainly profile, but making it far more versatile as a light carrier. It's just a thought, and I still far prefer your design, but this might be a way to tie the Queen Mola back into the Empire Strikes Back, whilst accounting for that ugly profile.
Has anyone tried fleshing out the two starships from the Ewok Adventures? The Towani family star cruiser and Noa’s starship? Those might be fun to build out from the little we saw on screen.
So basically if you get pissed off enough or if your creative enough you can turn what's essentially a garbage truck (For hazardous waste in this case) in space into a full fledged Turtle Ship or light strike carrier just due to it's design essentially being a heavily armored box with engines on it. Nice......
you really should join together with some film makers and actors to attempt a relatively low budget remake of the original trilogy. i think it would turn out amazingly! but anyways great work as always, it gives me a lot of inspiration when creating my own ideas and models in regards to what works while staying realistically visualized. keep it up!
I would like some more detail of inside the ship. Like what does the sleep or common areas look like. Seeing engine rooms. I would love to see and further imagine what it's like to be at war on this ship. Great job tho. I loved ur improvements to the design and back story on what the ship was originally designed for.
Great job as always ! I don't find it so ugly personally, it seems to fit in very well with the utility vehicle / rough edged ships that populate the galaxy.
This is a fantastic design! The tall Structure top and bottom, plus the boxy Hangar bay with its side opening. Great Design philosophy! Even though it doesnt rly fit into the Star Wars Universe. Would love to see it in action ❤!
I cannot figure out why the models of the ships will not been featured in a making of Star Wars book?! They kept putting the same transports in the foreground on these may not be the prettiest designs but they definitely indicate the ragtag nature of the Rebel Fleet and would have been nice return the Jedi to have a couple of these in shots in the foreground other than just the same transport and that belong Cruiser over and over again, and the mon calamari ships all the different look so much alike due to their design these would have been a great help for much-needed diversity in the fleet
Some other potential uses the Rebels could have had with the GR-58: 1. In it’s intended role as a volatile materials transport. The Rebels realized the value of having a separate ship for carrying some cargo, including heavy munitions. The GR-58 was purpose designed for this and proved invaluable to the Rebel cause by moving proton torpedoes and bombs from base to base. 2. As a special operations transport. The Rebels realized after the Battle of Yavin that they would need to quickly scatter, but still be able to maintain covert operations. As such, some GR-58 ships were used to house special operations strike teams, their equipment and transportation, with the hanger just able to house one U-wing or LAAT gunship. Although not ideal for the task due to being slower than the typical warship, the GR-58 nonetheless helped the Rebellion make several major strikes against targets of opportunity. 3. As an assault barge. On one occasion, a splinter Rebel group formerly allied with Saw Gerrera attempted to take a Star Destroyer, the Restitution. Using the GR-58’s heavy frontal shields and armor, they rammed the ship and managed to board the vessel, where they were wiped out to the last man after failing to take the secondary bridge. The attack did manage to force the Restitution back into dry dock, where it remained during the Battle of Endor, thus missing the fight.
Considering the Alliance was at one point scrambling for resources could one not assume the original was "kitbashed" in universe out of necessity on limited time and budget? Not every scrapyard in the galaxy is going to have enough parts to build a YT freighter after all. And yes, it's still ugly as Hell, but when you need it a boat is a boat.
This ship sounds like something my OC Togruta Freighter Pilot/Smuggler would fly, purely because it's so hideous and nobody would expect it to be useful in smuggling..
I would love to see a rerender of the Battle of Endor from you using all your designs! I think it's a pitty, that this amazing space battle is visually very outdated. Most ships are just so blury and often have weird blueish looks. Even just seeing a couple of shots from the movie being reimagined by you would be amazing!!!
Oh my gosh, I was just thinking last night how much I was hoping to see more of these "ships that time forgot" videos. These are awesome. I like this ship, btw. I wouldn't say it's too ugly: it's utilitarian, for sure, but I'd say it fits well with other utilitarian-looking SW ships. Lots of SW ships look like they were built for, and have seen, a lot of hard work, and I think this ship fits that style. I definitely hope you do more of these videos. I hadn't really given much thought to the Rebel 'background ships' in TESB until I saw your first video, but now that you've done a couple of them I'm keen to see what you make of the others. I'd also really like to see you do that strange Mon Cal cruiser with fins at 0:04, that's in the background along with the transport and the Mon Cal frigate that you covered in the last video.
I LOVE what you do, and the lore you gave it too... AWESOME. Please keep going with this series... and when you finish, i might suggest making ships from the books or comics! The ones from the books specially would give you a lot of creative freedom! Too many of them don't have an image in the wiki! And I think you're the man for the job!
thats pretty awesome looking! btw man amazing work these computer renditions are incredible. I really hope someone picks you up for work on a star wars video game for ship design and some concept art!!
