Caleb and I have recently completed a quick tips video where we used "The Ugly Cobalt (NOT Your Typical EVAP Vent and PSI Sensor Faults)" video tinyurl.com/szufb478 and trimmed it down. The original video was 1.5 hours and this "quick tips" video is now trimmed down to 25 minutes. We felt the bias voltage lesson on this one was worth repeating and wanted to use this case study to showcase the type of information we have on SD Premium. Thank you so much for helping us make SD Premium possible!

Had a fuel pump changed and now the gas tank can't hold pressure. The mobile mechanic refused to make it right. Won't past smog if there is a leak. It was suggested that a smoke machine pumped into the gas tank would show the where the leak is happening. Any ideas on how I might do the smoke when I don't have a smoke machine? Have an idea how to pressurized the tank just need an idea for cold smoke. I will put a metal value stem for tires into a gas cap.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 3 года назад
@@michaelpearce8661 if you can drop air pressure to less than 1.5 psi (what my smoke machine does), then do that and use soap and water (50-50 mix), you will be able to see most (not all) leaks. Be careful in knowing as you are putting pressurized oxygen into the tank and then the escaping fuel vapors etc. Don't do this in your home garage. Ventilation is key too.

I had an almost identical diag last night. Transmission range switch issues on a Ford truck. Would randomly drop from D to manual 2. Tranny harness had gotten against the EGR tube and looked just like the harness in this video. Was tempted to throw a switch on it, but momma didn't raise no parts changer.
@michaelpearce8661
@michaelpearce8661 3 года назад
@@ScannerDanner I don't have a smoke machine and was wondering if there are any other ideas for creating smoke? My dad took care of bees and had a smoker to quiet the bees. Can't do that because of possible sparks. The mixture you were talking about for your smoke machine how does it produce the smoke? Heat? I would be outside to do it. It's a used U-Haul moving truck and doesn't fit in many workshops. To do the smog, the only thing inside the garage is the engine part up to the windshield. Thinking of borrowing some cigarettes a filling up a large balloon with the smoke a let is out into the intake of the air pump as I pressurize the gas tank. Thinking that might work.

I worked on one of these cars with the tank pressure sensor circuit issue. After a bunch of checking and chasing I found a broken wire very near the same location. I fixed that and tested the circuit to find no return voltage to the scan tool so I had the customer order a new sensor by giving them the part number from the existing sensor, assuming it had an open circuit internally. A week later he gets it and I install it and I still get the same code with no return voltage. Upon further digging I noticed the pins in the sensor had bent together very slightly. Even more digging and I finally got the idea to compare the spacing on the connector and the sensor. Sure enough, someone had installed a different sensor to "repair" the open circuit issue and it was the incorrect sensor. Ordering the new one based on that wrong sensor was also incorrect. I got the right sensor and all was good in the universe. History is key in a lot of diagnosis and you have been a wealth of knowledge in these systems. I still refer to your book more than I should but it always helps. Thanks for the awesome content.

I had a 1990 Maxima once that decided to keep running even with the key out of the ignition. I was in a rest area on the New York State Thruway coming home on a rainy Sunday night, stopped to get something to eat/drink and car would not shut off. Pulled the key out of the ignition and car stayed running, never got to get my drink just headed straight home to be sure I did not get stranded there. Encded up taking the car to the dealer and they spent two days and $600 in diagnostics and as you guessed it the car had been in an accident and whoever fixed the crash damage didn't see the wiring harness behind the right headlight assembly had some pinched and semi spilt wiring/corrosion that was causing a Positive short to ground. Took the tech 2 days to find it but he did the fix. Took 10 minutes the fix, took 2 days of tracing.

Your wonderful video proves and confirms the existence of an electric potential in our ionized air. Many times when I diagnosed similar faults, my multimeter often showed 0.2 to 2 V with a broken fuse. As you can see in the USA, the air resistance is lower, hence 2.76V hahah😅. Best diagnostic greetings from Poland👍

My reverse lights on my Cobalt kept blowing a fuse. Traced it to a frayed wire down between the fuse box and engine. The wiring harness was rubbing against a stud. I used my multimeter to check continuity with the fuse slot and the body ground and noticed the needle would jump whenever I messed with that harness. Found the frayed wire and tape it up and it's been fine since.

Dear Mr. Paul, Great educational & detective video, as well as evidential to cover your back (just in case if some problematic client pretend otherwise) specially in relation to door edge rubbing against fender as well as the popped inner trim piece, which make the visual inspection a must initially. As you have expressed on many occasions the effect of temperature, vibration and sharp edges on wiring, now adding to it impact repair spots or zones Loool, as I have seen many body shops do not pay cautionary attention to wiring. Additionally, just FYI for anyone, I know you cannot say that, but I noticed that the wiring harness on most American brands is low quality and are thinner in gauge than Asian and European brands where in time it become brittle. Take Care and Enjoy Your Time.

"Fuses dont blow for no reason". Try telling that to people in my shop.
@parochial2356
@parochial2356 3 года назад
I beg to differ from Scanner's statement. Fuses occasionally open circuit for what ends up appearing to be "cycling fatigue". This was more common in the old days of glass barrel fuses [think 1970s Japanese cars] where the connection at 1 end [cap] of the fuse would open. Fuse looked fine on a visual inspection, but tested open with a test light. The newer type ATO, etc sometimes open internally at the point where the fuse element loops around. Had a Jeep recently; sudden no start, scan showed no comm situation. First rule: check fuses! PCM fuse tested bad, pulled and did visual, looked ok. On closer visual inspection, saw a faint spot in the fuse material, DMM proved open circuit, new fuse installed, been fine for months. 30 minute eval, diag, repair job.

A 10A fuse carrying a 1A load shouldn't blow without a short, but fuses carrying a substantial fraction of their rated capacity sometimes blow without necessarily feeding into a short. I think light oxidation at the contact points can cause them to run hotter than normal causing them to blow below rated capacity. Just replacing the fuse can restore the contact and solve the problem.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 3 года назад
@parochial2356 It certainly can happen but the key difference in what you are describing is "Fuse looked fine on visual inspection", a blown fuse as we had is different. But it is still good info and something we all must consider. I have a Benz case study where that ran me in circles for a bit lol But it was good training for the students to see how to verify and test along the way. Here it is if you want to see it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qmvfvJs01Eo.html

I’m sure you have seen it before, but zippertubing.com has prt heatshrink which has a split to install over wiring without cutting it. This stuff has a MIL-SPEC on it and is actually pretty good compared to some of the other stuff I have used. I have used the liquid tape before. I’m not very coordinated though and usually end up with it everywhere except where I’m trying to put it. I think I end up wearing more of it than the wire that I’m trying to fix.

Another good video, Paul! I've gotten thrown off by bias voltage back feeding before. It's especially confusing when there's no mention of bias voltage in the service data. That horrible collision repair makes my blood boil. The Cobalt wasn't exactly the safest car even when it was new, but now it's a certifiable deathtrap. And the owner is probably none the wiser that they're driving around in a car that was hacked back together. They probably just think that the door is out of adjustment.

The two most common wiring issues I see, by far, are caused by previous repairs or missed during accident repairs. Third is the rare case of something missed in manufacturing, in which case there’s usually a bulletin for. When a customer comes in with any electrical issue, first question is, “what are the last repairs done on your vehicle?”

@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 3 года назад
Snap-on vs Autel and my preferences...I actually prefer the Snap-On when it comes to data parameter display. (Recording and comparing data) There is a huge weakness in ALL of the Autel units on this. If I have an intermittent issue I'm trying to catch on a test drive, and I'm not sure what data I want to record, no problem, Snap-On will record ALL of the data in a particular list. Even stuff not showing on the screen. This is NOT the case with Autel. Only what is showing on the screen will get recorded. Then the Vantage program (component test meter) of the Verus, is still and absolutely unmatched resource that is built right into the tool (no internet needed). Okay, now Autels turn. The more I use the Ultra lapscope the more I like it. It has some really cool features, like having the VCI OBD2 pins wired directly to channel 4 of the lab scope and you can change which pins you want to look at. (The VCI or VCMI is also the lab scope). Awesome feature. But I prefer the lab scope being attached to my display, like the Verus, because at times, when I want to do a measurement in the back of the vehicle, I have to disconnect from the DLC to bring my scope back with me or use some really long jumpers and then I can't switch back to the scanner anymore while using the scope. As for bidirectional controls, resets, etc, Autel for the win on those.

Nice video. Good feeling to find the root cause. Is the fuel pressure sensor in the tank to measure the fuel level, like it done in some big tanks in industries, or to make sure that The fuel cap is closed due to evap system?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 3 года назад
the tank fuel psi sensor on this model is used strictly for EVAP leak monitoring

As professional tech's, we need to use ALL of our senses. The aha moment was pretext by the sound of the door rub and the visual of poor paint job, which in turn led to the root cause of the short to ground being a poor body repair. Persistence pays off cause fuses just don't blow for no reason !

One more confused question.. A typical diode in4007 has about 400 ohm of resistance. Now, it is connected parallel to another typical resistor of say 200 ohm. The total resistance of the circuit containing the 2 components is not changed, just a marginal .5 or .10 percent difference only. Why? What happened to the resistance of the diode? Same case when the diode and resistor are connected in series and the total resistance remains closed to 200!!!
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 3 года назад
You can't measure a diode for resistance and say, that is what it is going to be once the barrier potential is overcome. In other words, once current starts to flow in a forward bias direction of a diode, there isn't much resistance, if any, there at all.

Paul, I like have enjoyed your videos over the years. On this video, which I just saw for the first time, I believe the schematic you drew for this issue is incorrect. The emitter and collector are always tied to ground. The collector has to be reverse biased in order for the transistor to ever conduct on a fault or otherwise. Because the collector is connected to the coil terminal which is grounded, seems to be a mistake. I’m not familiar with this specific circuit but I think there is an error here. Much thanks for your work!
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner Год назад
"Emittor and collector are always tied to ground" That's not true my friend. This wasn't meant to be an exact block diagram of the inside of this PCM but this is exactly how this circuit is working. The only variable I missed is the bias voltage measured will also be highly dependent on the impedance of the meter you are using. The higher the impedance, the higher the bias voltage you will see. In other words, the source voltage for this bias line could be much higher than what I showed.

It always surprises me to see how you can get to a diagnosis without first looking at the wiring diagram. Shut the front door, ha ha ha! It's like a woodsman dropped into the forest with no map or compass, using clues like position of the sun, moss on trees, and other natural landmarks. I was puzzled by your remark at 1:01, where you said that the Evap Vent Solenoid is not commanded to vent. Do I take it that this normally open valve will show 'not venting' on the scan tool when it actually is venting normally in the off position? What a confusing data pid. I guess that explains why at 17:34 the not venting pid doesn't change when you control it through the scan tool.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 3 года назад
Only on some models and on some systems my friend :-) On others, there is no way I'm even touching it without a diagram first! I have a great case study right now on that very truth! Anyway, yes, the EVAP Vent solenoid is a normally open solenoid. So when it is on electrically it is "off" it is mechanically "on" (full flow, valve open). And when it is energized, or electrically "on", it is mechanically "off" (no flow, valve closed). Hope I didn't just make that worse lol Thanks for always being encouraging to me. I should know your first name but I don't
