I think it is great that you release these videos. It shows people that this work is not only difficult to start with, but it can evolve into disaster because of faulty new parts. Those who think you are "chasing your tail" should care nearly as much as you do about fixing the vehicle properly. Those are the guys firing the parts canon talking shit. Ignore them.

Thank you Joe. The other variable here is that most other repair channels do not film live. They've already done their homework before turning the camera on, so it gives people a false sense of things at times.

@@JoesAutoElectric i should have clarified. That method is NOT a problem at all! In fact, at times its better. It gets to the point much, much faster and can be more useful for the guys in a pinch. It just bring a false sense of reality to the silver bullet seekers out there. That's all I meant.

To see top line guys run into these insane parts issues while keeping their wits about them offers hope for some of us. It's why we watch in the first place. As a previous tech who worked for several Ford dealers as an electronics and driveability specialist, you actually have a smoking gun here that you were overlooking. The scan tool was showing 0 amps of current from the o2 sensors (all 4). Ford uses current measurement to verify circuit integrity and part validity, as well as a comparator voltage measurement. The voltage is used to test wiring integrity, and the current is used to test the circuit operation. This all happens during both KOEO, and KOER tests, and at vehicle startup. This current measurement is separate for the different supply voltage circuits, which explains the commonality between codes for everything on the one fuse. With that current measurement capability disabled inside the PCM, the PCM cannot detect the circuit integrity as valid because it's looking for a current draw at the time of it's internal test during KOEO. Since it doesn't see current, it assumes a defective circuit, and sets the code. It also explains why you could not substitute the load to remove the code. The pcm never saw any current draw on those circuits, so it will always fail the circuit! You most definitely have a defective PCM, but most remanufacturers including FoMoCo, only test inputs and outputs for valid operation. They do not verify current comparison during a reman, so it isn't surprising that it was missed. I'm sure that pcm hit the reman desk, got tested, passed, and was relabeled and recycled as a functional pcm, reboxed and then readied for shipment. It just so happened that "David" was the next in line calling for that pcm, as the reman desk would not have known where it originated from, only that it was labeled as complete and ready to ship. Therefore, David got that same pcm back. If that pcm were to return to the remanufacturer at any point, the same thing will happen again, because of the limited way in which they test and verify core pcm's. That pcm needs to die a quick and violent death in a crusher, or a slow burn in a furnace... Order from a different remanufacturer, or try to find a junkyard solution, or possibly a new pcm if available (probably not)

you could also send it to a specialist with a description of the issues along with codes for root cause diagnosis and if (good) parts available; a repair to ECM.

Replying to Al here but my question is to anybody out there that may know....Is there anywhere an independent out there that can repair original equipment ECM PCM and other faulty modules? The idea that techs like Danner and other top line guys that know their shit have to do a 3,4, 5 Module parts bomb to get a good one is pure insanity. The glitches in modern stuff is just beyond the pale..

@@mohawkmike142 The largest issue here is that all ECM's and modules are proprietary, and as such, the internal schematics and parts diagrams are normally not released to 3rd party repair facilities. Sometimes, after End Of Life, they are made available, but for the most part, this is not so. This means that most 3rd party repair facilities are unable to provide 100% functionality testing, or internal eeprom replacement. Basic components such as capacitors, resisters, mosfets, inductors, and the like are fairly easy to trace down and replace with like components, but the logic is where most get tripped up. Most facilities will bench test a module, make certain it is providing it's fundamental operation, and release it out the door if no errors are detected. These are mostly "module mills", and they are hesitant to dive any deeper than normal on modules because there isn't any profit in it for them. All that to say basically, if they can't make money at it, they won't do it, even if they can.

Getting a defective part makes you go crazy. You’ll spend so much time going thru your diagnosis a second time to make sure your right the first time. Your lucky the customer is Cool about all of this. 👍👍👍👍👍

I don't replace a ton of PCM's, but have done maybe a dozen in the past 10 or so years. Out of all the "remans", I only remember getting 1 good one. Then it turns into an argument with the reman company to get a "good" one. I researched REALLY reputable companies and found a particular reman place that came highly recommended. I paid up, like x3 the cost of other places. Worked great (cant remember the name though). I just go with used for the most part now, flash them and haven't had an issue.

MAN I'm so glad I'm not alone in spending twice as much time verifying a defective part as I did the original diagnosis. Parts supplier should pay that time. Not to mention the customer is without their vehicles all that time. If the parts can't be made right at $99, do them right and charge $199...or whatever it takes to cut down these issues to near zero. I'd much rather pay more and be done. People are so cheap (suppliers and internet shoppers) it's crushing the industry....aka, us. We usually pay out of our pockets for this stuff in free time. No other industry does that. #endrant

Awesome video. One thing that always helps is to just catch all the data from every wire of the component at once watch power and ground and signal and get it to act up. Scopes are awesome.

I currently have the exact same issue with my daughters car. I have checked and checked and at the point of pulling the harness but have not failures relative to the harness having a short. I have function the EGR percentages and get a response, as well as the purge valve. The O2 sensors are reading and reading lean. The car idles fine then runs rough till it dies. Clear codes and the same one come back every time. Thank for the detailed tests described and the detailed trouble shooting. Excellent video!

Great video, Danner. It's really sad that the fix for this vehicle comes down to inferior quality parts. What's even more disturbing is finding out that Ford has "sublet" the rebuilding of this part to another company. Looking forward to the next chapter.

I'm going through the same issue with a 08 explorer 4.0 . Same burnt wires at EGR and same insulation rotted at MAF SENSOR . Can't wait till your final video

I agree about the "secondary" electronic rebuild industry, a lot of sham out there! Sent in the TCM on my Mazda 5 to a place in Florida offering "lifetime warranty". I got the TCM back and it worked flawless for a month, then it went into the dreaded "limit safety mode" locking me into 3rd gear only. Turns out all they had done was reflow the solder at the terminal connections. I sent it back, three weeks later I reinstall the repaired TCM, they had replaced the microprocessor by my visual inspection. However they had loaded the WRONG software on the module, it worked fine in Automatic, but the Manual stick shift mode did NOT work! I gave up and bought a new TCM from Mazda. Lifetime warranty? Well, with the cost of freight that they charged each time, and my labor to remove and replace? It was a no brainer, but a new TCM. The issue we ALL must be concerned about is critical parts like PCMs, TCM, if the OEM does not offer, insures your fine perfect old ride is turned into JUNK! What we really need to do is PROTECT the RIGHT to REPAIR, otherwise shade tree mechanics and independent shops will just disappear!

Going on car-part there is like 10+ different choices based on part number on the old part. I would also at least look to see if a used part is available cheaply.

Probably not. At this point, it's well established that this is a chronic pattern failure part. If you introduce another that's likely to fail somewhere between soon and immediately, you give yourself room to create more self doubt.

One of the the first things I liked about your channel is the battles that you have with some of these cases and its definitely NOT chasing your tail when it comes to troubleshooting and mystery like this. You have to cover all the bases not only to fix the problem but also to prevent an underlying condition from taking out a component down the road. You are truly an inspiration for all the mechanics out there (Like me) that have little time and patience and are frequently stumped by these type of issues. Using Snap-On to clear KAM on fords will trigger the theft code and sometimes a no start. They left out the “turn key off after reset” warning. Using IDS it forces you to turn the key off after KAM reset and doesn’t make the PATS mad. Excited to see what you find on this one, I just wanted to mention that in case it’s helpful.

I know this frustration well, Paul. In my experience, anytime I've encountered this type of problem, the theft code at the bottom of the list, has been the decision maker for me, in calling the ecm as faulty.

Helped me in diagnosing bad pcm in 2006 explorer. Had elusive p0433 purge circuit and all O2 heater circuits. I was able to test my pcm and outputs using your how to. Thank you so much. FONZ

Same issue on my mom’s 2008 Explorer. Throwing all the codes. This is all new to me. Have some general understanding and knowledge. Learning as I go. Really looking like it needs a new PCM then is my conclusion without testing everything. Looking through comments and other forums it seems to be a common issue. Don’t know where to start and what I am going to do. My dad passed away Sep 30th and this was his vehicle. Don’t have a lot of money to just throw at it.

Thank you. I did have to replace the alternator on it and it cleared up a lot of hiccups but didn’t clear the codes. Runs absolutely fine.

Been waiting for part 2, great study, my favorites are the ones that give you trouble, get to try and learn more, with the problem of defective"new" parts itt really makes alot of unnecessary problems, I worked at a auto parts store and I saw first hand, brand new parts in bulk that are getting by any quality control, really a shame that this is happening. Makes your job much more difficult. No worries you'll figure it out.

Ex ford tech here, current fleet tech. When we had crown vics in the fleet we would get the same codes on the crown vics. They would not set koeo, the codes would set when driving. The first one I diaged with these set of codes I checked all the wiring found no issues. I wound up replacing the PCM and it fixed the fault codes. When ford stopped selling new PCMs I just installed used ones. We have had probably a dozen CV’s with this issue and everyone was fixed with a new/used PCM.

These videos are just what a lot of us need. I don't think you realize how cathartic these videos can be. I never really got to fully develop my diagnostic capabilities while I was still in the field. I have a hand full of cars that outsmarted me a couple years ago and I still occasionally find myself wondering what I did wrong or could have done better. Seeing a video like this makes me think maybe I can kick my own ass just a little less. Thanks for sharing!

Exelent case, i had a similar experience with an explorer seting vgr and o2 sensors heaters codes , at 200 farenthig it activaded the a/c closh relay , have the pcm repair and no more pronlems.

Thanks for showing all the frustrations Paul. It makes me feel better about shipping a VW after bypassing the entire harness for 2 sensors having them working on scan data and scope , codes gone etc... but still getting a 5v ref circuit code. Paid a diagnostic "expert" $440 to check my work and make a call, he left me with more questions than answers, replace other MAP sensor and or get the ECU tested. OK I says get it checked and reprogram a new one for me, Oh I can't do VW but still pay me my bucks! Kinda leave a sour taste if ya know what I mean :) Anyway thanks again for your teachings , this is the first one in 5ish years that I could not fix thanks to our help I usually come out on top. I found myself in this boat recently and glad I stumbled across your video . I replaced the EGR and vapor selenoid and was about to do the o2 sensors but I think I will just deal with the CEL . I may take the bulb out of the dash cluster . Doubt I’m going to spend money on a remanufactured PCM just to make the light go out. Explorer is running great so no need . Just don’t want the shop to try to fail my inspection

I have the exact issue with Ford Explorer 2009 4.0L. codes P0403 and P0443, the ac clutch is working intermitted, when the button Ac is not presed, the ac clutch clicks all the time, the pcm energized the ac relay, the car its very weak power when drive, and the catalytic converter is going very hot when the car is driving continuously, i check everything, powers, ground, egr, purge valve. I wanted a Pcm from FORD but its back order, so i send the pcm to repair on electronic institute (i don't know how its say), and they repair me the pcm and everything is perfect for 150dollar, the car is driving LIKE NEW. I love your videos, i work in Mazda Ford for 15 years:) Greetings from Israel:)

Great, logical progress through a difficult situation, with virtually no direct information as to the actions of the ecm outputs and inputs in a known configuration. It is amazing to me, that even a non critical controller from a mid 70s pinball machine, features detailed self diagnostic routines to test all inputs and exercise every output. Further, the anticipated outputs, versus inputs, are explained in the service manual supplied, including the schematic, with each machine. No wonder the ecm repair shop sends them back broke; the techs are in the dark as much as the mechanics. Keep up the good work!

Thank you Paul for your faithfulness to The Lord by sharing your knowledge with us. My colleagues and I appreciate your thorough teaching and video's. 06 Mercury Mountaineer 4.0 dido, did exactly as your vehicle tech did, changed harness got one from Ford, because of multiple harnes areas with insulation coming apart, (turns out they used soy some how to make the insulation on the harness). Then came exactly the same codes. Had several dealers check the harness part number respect to vehicle Vin etc. It checked out good. Then reset, check all plugs, terminals etc. All good. Then it all came back. PO135, 141,155,161,403,443, 645. Then reset the Kam 7 times simultaneously. checked codes again only 135,155,403,443, and p1000 showed up. Went thru same routine check for power, ground, fuse, and changed pcm power relay output was low, etc. Took it for a spin they all came back. Fellow colleague stated on the inside front right kick panel on a explorer he had found the washer fluid hose going to rear hatch glass was leaking in to the one of the unused terminal plug. I found coolant inside upstream bank 2 O2 terminal, cleaned with water spray bottle then spray brake cleaner for evaporation conected all reset it all However, customer still has the same codes. Is there a possibility that the original harness has a different impedance then the new replacement one which pcm sees. I wonder if mfg. knows about this but they are staying quite about it. Thank you three Danners. Down side to this reman industry, most of them don't have a way to properly bench test these to guarantee their work. They want to keep costs down for themselves. But make the technician waste more time second guessing themselves. They should be held accountable. But, will they ever be? Probably not. Only going to be worse unless shops ban together in class action and force them to change or close their doors. We need a reman company that guarantees they fully bench test modules and provide some type of health report for each input and output circuit.

Another great video. We have this same problem, at our shop, right now. 2010 Explorer. Everything seems to work correct except this. One test, In the alldata workflow, is to test 2 pins on the bottom ECU connector, 69 grn/brn & 70 gry/violet. They should have batt voltage, but there is nothing there. This is why we don't want to call the ECU. I Don't think we looked at the no current flow, so we'll do that on Monday. The ex Ford tech, in the replies here, made a good point about the no current causing the ECU to throw codes. Still not sure why no volts at those 2 pins??? Thanks for all your great teaching vids!

Definitely a tough issue that the reman process is so shoddy. However, if you have this diagnosed and handled at the dealership, they should be warrantying the part and labor. So, if within 2 years or however long the warranty is the reman PCM goes bad again, they should be replacing it and the warranty should restart. Sucks for independent shops but when it comes to these issues the keys are typically programmed at the dealership so that's where you'll be anyway. Yes, big waste of time till you get one that works properly.

Excellent job as far as I'm concerned. I'm much on par with the testing procedures you carried out, I would have made the same call after directly putting 12v to the control feed at the pcm. I've seen that same code befor on a Ford taurus, only it was the fuse that kept blowing from a bad diode at the ac compressor. I feel this diagnosis is alot more on the" experienced" level. In my experience with bad pcms, I have seen the computer throw high circuit codes for components that where new an had good power and grounds, the pcm just didnt see the control feed voltages. I also had a dodge stratus that would throw Keep alive codes, the car would run fine but none of the monitors would ever complete. Always hard to call a pcm, but in this case I definitely agree with you. Thanks for posting!

Also with the pcm issue, i always mark the computer when i send them out with a mark only i would recognize. I havent got the same unit back yet but it is always possible. I have had the happen with other components. I actually bought an alternator at napa once that turned out to be a core someone else turned in. Had to take it back for a new one.

I know you were frustrated but what a fantastic topic for a video. Excellent video. When I watched you trying to tighten those pins I was cringing thinking you were going to stab your finger because I had the same problem the other day with a connector on a vent valve solenoid and almost stabbed myself.

Text from a post in a tech forum: 2010 explorer throws p0443 and p0403. Originally the pcm was not grounding the purge valve or egr. Ford pcm not available got an aftermarket one and everything worked but randomly throws the same dtcs. Again double checked my diagnosis load tested all the circuits and even overlaid the wires, everything points to a bad pcm. Got another one (with dirty looks from parts) this one the purge valve works but the egr does not, sometimes will open the egr valve 10-30 seconds after commanded AND throws dtcs for all the oxygen sensors. Decided to man up and access splice 100 (a bear to get to) splice is good and again verified no chaffing anywhere. Contacted hotline and they said “ it may take multiple pcms to repair this concern” going on number 3 now. I have two pcms I just swapped back and forth and they act up differently. Talk about second guessing your diagnosis I’ve almost never had a pcm fix anything and I never replace them because it’s like a one in 100 chance. But 3 bad in a row??

The wire insulation breakdown is notorious on these. The harness might still be available through Ford.

The lesson here is WATCH OUT WHERE YOU GET YOUR REPLACEMENT PCMs. Reman PCMs were faulty once and so sometimes they don't fix the issue with them when they resell them. They just paint them and send them on our way. Because most of the Reman PCMs are usually faulty, I like to get mine USED, from a junkyard, preferably from a wrecked car. If the car was wrecked, it means that it was running good. If not I usually choose a good re builder. I've had little problems from Flagship one. The dealer PCM,s are usually not fixed right.

Glad to see we are on the same page, "new" pcm is faulty. Sounds like they rebuilt his old module and missed the problem when they rebuilt it. Im having a similar issue with a Front electronic module on a 05 thunderbird, no headlights and no driver door window function. Cant get a new computer sent it out to be rebuilt and comes back with same problems 😒.

We had a 2010ish Jeep Wrangler… had a manufacturer specific misfire/ fuel injector code. Turned out to be a bad driver, we put a new ecm in… then got a P0300… didn’t have it before… chased that down to be a bad “new” ecm…. Got a another new one…. Got shorted O2 heater codes.. brand new codes. Didn’t bother diagnosing it, sent the ecm back and got ANOTHER NEW one… finally got a good one. Took three tries… just dumb

Worked at ford dealership as a diesel tech i had a 7.3 powerstroke IPR circuits problem call out a bad pcm had to replaced it twice, the second one even had a broken bolt in the connector!!! Ended up with third party board repair shop told us the circuit in the pcm was a no fix… finally found one from a scrap truck installed it and programmed it and customer keep on plowin haha

I had similar issue with explorer same 4 oxygen sensors and purge ended being temp sensitive pcm warm days no codes no issues cold mornings codes came back no voltage at o2s and purge code new pcm fixed it and this truck drove me nuts

I remember I worked on a 2007 Ford Explorer. The complaint was the engine light wouldn’t go off, it was setting codes for all the O2 sensors and TPS voltage. I remember it had a multiple parts replaced, throttle body and all O2 sensors. After taking with the customer, I had learned that the codes were present after the PCM was replaced. The original complaint was a intermittent stall when hot… The PCM fixed the stall but was now setting false codes.. The replacement PCM was the wrong year and for a 2wd not a 4wd.. Installed a new PCM and programmed to the vehicle and all problems were resolved. I was the 5th or 6th shop to get the vehicle.. it was a complete nightmare, which is why I remember it. 😂

I'm having the same codes and issues. 2007 explorer 4.0 xlt. Drives and runs good. Just has codes and cel. I'm going to cross my fingers and order a new PCM from flagship. They seem to have good parts from what I've read in some of these comments. Wish me luck! Great video by the way. I wouldn't even concern myself with the codes if I didn't need to pass inspection. It won't pass the emissions with these codes as is. 🤦

​@tonyhyatt34 flagship one is hit or miss as I said. But for us, since this was from another shop, that shop did the repair. Where he finally sourced a good PCM from, I'm not sure. But I do know that two of those PCMs came from Ford directly! Crazy stuff on this one man, for sure

There are a few 4.0 Explorer PCMs that are unique. Check the PCM box code? We had one a few years back that became a pain in the butt. Ford back ordered it forever. We got two " remanufactured" units and still has codes. In the end we found a very expensive used PCM and we reflashed it. We could not find any company willing to repair the original PCM.

71022srs control chip inside the PCM. It controls EGR, EVAP, oxygen sensors and air conditioning valve. I think thats the faulty part. All those codes are linked to that chip inside the PCM

What about a fuse buddy amp meter on the fuse for the circuit? That would give you a rough idea of what the amperage is going through that circuit if it shows the o2 heaters are on. Even if the scan tool doesnt show current flow you would see it on an amp meter at the fuse right?

he did amp test with probe,and did have current ,but problem was ,software not see it ,so circuit is flagged for not being on,when software corupt,it makes decisions ,and there are wrong ,like virus on a pc,pc itself ,hard ware is fine ,software is corrupt ,not work right ,freeze,crash ,do strange stuff,had diesel pump with ecu on top,psg16 vauxhall pump,board and transisters cooked,engine start,but no tick over and no rev counter,outputs to dash ,gone,can drive verhicle,but half the systems dead,had to fit a new pump,use carprog,to pull imob code out,carpass code,then opcom,to devorce it ,go to virgin state,then opcom to marry it to verhicle,with cars imob code,then all was good,and change millage,and vin number ,so correct ,got love faulty ecu ,vauxhall love to put them on the engine too,heat and vibration,with what i have learned of mr scanner videos,i have made leaps and bounds now,i get the hard cars now to fix lol,and my scope on a rope and verus ,is first set tools out of the box ,scope her ,god bless mr scanner,he doing good work,pass on the skills ,world wide ,i am in england ,they call me mr scanner now too,in the work shop,as a lot of the techs ,scared or dont understand what the scope can do,and basic circuit design ,so find whats missing ,love crank no start now ,i have even bought some cheap cars ,as not start ,and got them fixed,resale ,make few dollars ,my friend does hgv ,lorrys,and he loves canbus and linbus problems ,to see the cab tilt and the engine loom ,like a crashed ufo,alien tech ,but he loves it ,volvo,scania,renault,he loves trucks,understands them ,how they work,loves going on breakdowns

I had same issue same vehicle. Did a check found multiple pigtails with bad wiring. Fix pigtails and still the issue. Watched your video and replaced pcm. Still same codes and same condition. Really stupid.... ended up finding fuse 42 blown. Blew another fuse and found another bad pigtail. Fixed it replaced fuse now all good.

What about a wiring issue where a corroded wire "somewhere" is only acting up extremely intermittently, ie a ground/pin thats only doing something due to temp/corrosion. We're coming into spring warmer weather now..? idk

@@ScannerDanner These kind of ecm/pcm failures scare me abit, just because of how a customer may react. Claiming theyre being ripped off and theres no way vehicle can take 4 computers to fix it, them wanting their money back after 2 or whatever days trying to diagnose whats happening. I hear about enough garages taking advantage of people as it is. Maybe coming across this scenario, this model with these codes, just not take on the job altogether.

As a former tech I can relate to your frustration here Paul. It's difficult enough to call a PCM/ECM as being bad, it compounds the problem exponentially by being handed numerous faulty computers. Add on to that the "chip" shortage issue and it just adds to the insanity. I feel bad for Dave because no telling how much time he has wrapped up into this charade. This job is tough enough as it is without all these other issues adding mass confusion. I wonder if these companies supplying the bad computers would be willing to reimburse the techs and you for your time, 😉.

Can rainwater get in that PCM, it looks like it's right under the wiper cowl. I know Ford had this problem on a lot of vehicles. Might explain how it worked for three months then took a crap. Great video regardless, Caleb is doing a great job editing

Hey Danner, was there ever a part 3? Im dealing with this too, thank you for the video! As far as i can tell youre the only one with a theoretical solution. Im tempted to open my ecu and see if i can find the faulty chip but knowing ford all the chip designations are probably ground off.

There wasn't. It went back to the original shop that changed the PCM as it was a warranty part. Took 7 months to finally get a good module.
