The Ugly Truth About The 2023 NBA MVP Debate

Nikola Jokic, from being drafted during a Taco Bell commercial, to being a 2x NBA MVP in the last 2 years and a top 5 player in the NBA. But as we know from past greats in this current age like a Lebron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, whoever you want to name, once you make it to the top everything about you will be micro analyzed to make you seem more overrated then people make you out to be. And that can be the most true this year with Nikola Jokic threatening to become the first player to ever achieve a 3 peat MVP since Larry Bird in the 80s. But in the case of Nikola Jokic his case for a 3rd straight MVP is as strong as it can be, 50 win season and on top of the West and near triple double averages and efficiency only rivaled by Wilt Chamberlain. For the majority of the season he was clear ahead the leading MVP candidate, however, for the last few months of the season the NBA media has seemed the change the narrative over and over again to support someone else winning the MVP, and it has been done in the weirdest ways possible. Not to the point of Slander, but just very very weird instances of reaching for the sake of discrediting greatness. So in today’s video, what I want to do is go over every major instance of the NBA media’s witch hunt to take away Nikola Jokic’s 3rd straight MVP by season's end and how they propped up Joel Embiid's case in the process.
Chapters:
0:00 - 2:02 Intro
2:02 - 21:07 Jokic's Mainstream Media Witch Hunt
21:07 - 25:38 Jokic's Stat Witch Hunt
25:38 - 35:55 Joel Embiid and Recency Bias in the Media
35:55 - 37:58 Conclusion

Im trying to make sure people know what stat padding is and why its a criticism, because ive noticed, no one really uses it correctly anymore. The whole point of calling someone a stat padder was to point to someone who was on a bad team and putting stats that you know they were incapable of putting up on a good team with other scoring options next to them. "At the cost of winning" was never in the discussion because they were always on bad teams already, that's what allowed them to do what they did. It was mostly focused on point production and advanced analytics was not really a thing yet. There was also a secondary use for the word to describe franchises artificially inflating players numbers for a trade, but it being used this way was not as common as above. Is Joker a stat padder? Hell no. Westbrook? Hell no and btw, Rich failed to mention his 78% win rate with okc when he had a triple double. So can we please start using this term correctly again? Its not a term created to highlight someone whose center lets them get an extra rebound every other game. Its meant to show someone who is scoring 12 more points per game on average than they would as a 2nd option on a good team.

Problem with Jokic is that he can't pick fouls, his team is built around to him to prevent him taking fouls. But if u check 4th quarters, their "clutch" defense was the best in the league, why? Because Jokic in the 4th can step up and don't worry about fouls anymore, he can press on defensively. He is so valuable that benching him when he is in foul trouble can lose them a game, and refs are not a fans of him.

The thing that aggravates me the most online about this whole MVP debate is people who say Jokic shouldn't get the MVP since Giannis didn't get it when he got two and so on - people are acting like the history of the award itself should have a role in who is the most valuable player of the year - for me at least, that makes 0 sense. Voter fatigue is a phenomenon that happens, people act like it should be a rule or like it was already a rule set in place. Incompetent voting in the past shouldn't dictate your vote now. You aren't "getting revenge for LeBron and Kobe" you're just fucking up the system even more. I understand all arguments about Embiid deserving it on his own merit, but points like that give me brain damage.

Here’s what all these analysts are missing. It doesn’t matter if his defense is meh or even bad. Net On/Off, BPM, RAPTOR, Real Plus/Minus, Win Shares, all of these take what happens on defense into account. And as we all know, Jokic destroyed everyone in those stats. And all this reaching is purely done (aside from being there to drum up views) to give an excuse to vote for anyone aside from Jokic, when all the advanced stats are unanimous that he deserves it, it’s pathetic.

I have a very simple formula that would guarantee the correct player gets MVP every year: Win Shares multiplied by team wins. League leader is MVP. that simple. I won't go over all the past MVPs, but using this formula: Jokic would be the runaway winner the past 3 seasons. Nowitzki would've won both seasons Nash won. Jordan would've won over Magic for 2 of his 3 MVPs (although one was really close). Bird was the deserving winner all 3 years he won. David Thompson would've won instead of Bill Walton (who only played 58 games that year). and Wilt would have at least a couple more MVPs.

Dude basically whined cried and flopped and sulked and pitied his way into an MVP 70% of all league fans knew he didnt deserve this year....AND shat the bed AGAIN in the playoffs......still not making it out the 2nd round for his career. Could you imagine the fucking NUCLEAR heat that lebron wouldve gotten if his career had played out like this up this point. But Embiid gets minimal actual slander, hate, or criticism especially in the national media cuz he has that whole loveable foreigner thing going for him and is a walking meme for the internet crowd. Its time to start speaking truthfully about him. Hes not even the best player in his division, and may not even really be 2nd best at that by the end of next season.

Andrew B 4 hours ago (edited) Anyone with the most rudimentary mathematical aptitude understands that Jokić was factually the most valuable player of the regular season. Jokić outperformed Embiid in nearly every major statistical category (see below). While Embiid did have more PPG, Jokić shot less frequently and more efficiently than Embiid by a wide margin (FG: 63.2% > 52.8%). Moreover, Jokić averaged more than twice as many assists as Embiid during the regular season (9.8 > 4.2). Jokić scored fewer PPG only because he, unlike Embiid, passes the ball. He is not merely a scorer, but a playmaker. Jokić outperformed Embiid in all other major statistical categories, except blks. Jokić wins above replacement (WAR) = 23.2 (first in the league). Embiid WAR = 14.3. WAR probably captures MVP status better than any other single statistical metric. Math is not "subjective." It's clear that the voters selected the MVP on some criteria other than actual merit. "MVP" Embiid's stats per game for the series PTS: 25.5 FG: 42% Reb: 9 Ast: 2 Blk: 3 Stl: 0.5 Team eliminated. Jokić's stats per game vs The Suns PTS: 34.5 FG: 59.5% Reb: 11.2 Ast: 10.33 Blk: 1 Stl: .83 Surpasses Wilt Chamberlin for most triple-doubles by a center in playoff history. Team advances to Western Conference Final. These numbers only further reinforce what we already know: Jokić is the real MVP.

Bottom line Jokic shouldn't have won the award last year. Cool video I loved it but you kinda just sound like an upset nuggets fan and essentially was saying he only didn’t win 3 because the league couldn’t give him 3 because he’s that great of a player stats don’t tell the entire story every season is different that’s why Nash won over Shaq and that’s why drose won over Kobe and Lebron just cuz he averaged almost a triple double doesn’t mean he should just win cuz of that Joel had just as good as a season even better in my opinion. Then pulling only negative comments as if that’s the larger narrative that the media is taking when it is just the opposite. Mass media is in love with jokic I can find more positive takes of jokic play than negative takes “but the Perk take was just a bad take” and stats about Jokic that the media put out but your not being honest about Jokic yourself. Because all the offense goes through him he plays half ass defense and to add to that he kinda sucks on defense period not compared to the nba but compared to his mvp counterparts he ranks dead last in my opinion one part it’s to keep his energy other part he just isn’t at an mvp level on defense that’s a fact for you to act like he doesn’t play poor defense your lying to your self. For you to say his defense is a perceived weakness is a terrible take his defense is so bad that the coach takes him out in clutch moments. Stop acting as if he is perfect he didn’t win mvp because of his lack of defense and Joel Embiid stellar defense this season that’s a big reason why. Joel and Jokic offense this year is about equal at mvp levels with Joel scoring more and Jokic assisting more the difference just being a matter of styles and preference of course but Joel does get the nod he was scoring leader 1-0 or 1-1 but where Joel wins this year really is his hustle and defense hard to put into stats but he far surpasses Jokic this year in that category 2-0 or 2-1. That’s the only reason why he didn’t win MVP if you can’t acknowledge that you are just a super nuggets fan or an Embiid hater simple. He lost because he lost not because he couldn’t win 3 straight stop that narrative. Let’s keep it simple The MVP has to Lead, Win, hustle and play both sides in my opinion. Joel has either tied or done better in all categories this year. Also impressive performances adds to an MVP just like when missing games hurts your MVP odds doesn’t matter if it happened the first game of the season or the last it’s not biased because when Embiid didn’t play against jokic at the end of the season jokic had better odds at winning the MVP. Embiid got 73% of first place votes for a reason they didn’t get it wrong.

Jokic shouldn’t have won it last year. Dumb narrative reason for that win.
