The Ukrainian People's Army (Ukrainian National Army) was the army of the Ukrainian People's Republic (also known as the Ukrainian National Republic; the UNR) which was proclaimed after the Bolshevik October Revolution. When Soviet Russia and Germany signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk it left Ukraine in the German sphere of influence. Apart from the UNR the West Ukrainian People's Republic was established in Eastern Galicia. This republic was soon overrun by the Polish forces in the Polish-Ukrainian War (1918 - 1919). Meanwhile White Russian (led by Anton Denikin) troops fought against the Red (this was the Southern Front of the Russian Civil War). The White Russian forces were attacked by the Black Army of Nestor Machno: the Revolutionary Insurgent Army of Ukraine who ruled the so-called Free Territory of Ukraine (Makhnovshchina).

They also committed a lot of genocide against the Jews and the ethnic Poles. For example, Ukrainian auxiliary police killed over 1 million Jews during 1941-42 and over 100 hundred thousand ethnic Poles during the Volynhia massacre in Galicia & Volynhia in 1943. Then they also took part in the genocide of Poles during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. BTW, I totally support a free and independent Ukraine. Ukraine has a dark & evil past that most people don't know about, only history nerds like me know about.

Thank you for your videos, I'm currently binge watching your videos and your more neutral point of view of history. I appreciate that you are making videos of events from different perspective, what is very important to understand the people and the motivations of every side. Sorry that I commented her on this video, but are you planning to tackle on other time periods than your videos have set? Sadly, I know that Soviet history is something a hot topic now, but it would also be interesting to see background history about the rise and fall of fascism in Europe how that played out in different countries or noteworthy events what happened in the 50s/60s/70s?

Your series about Ukraine is becoming one of the best sources of knowledge about the history of this beligerd country. And this video is a great addition to it. May Ukraine soon find victory and lasting peace. 🇺🇦 ✌ As a Pole, I dare say that the lack of support for an independent Ukrainian state at the end of the Polish-Soviet War might have been one of the greatest Polish errors/failings in the XX century, if not in our history as a whole. We won't make it again. BTW the topic of Ukrainian officers serving in the Polish military in the inter-war period (like Shandruk, quoted in this video) is a very interesting one.

Studying the era is very complicated. Having some idea of what was happening requires a good memory, as there were multiple forces fighting, cities going back and forth, etc. For me, the East between 1917-1921 is one of the most interesting in history, as it is really just pure havoc. I like to say that the Reds didn't win, but their enemies lost, because, even with the same main enemy, they couldn't even temporarily forget their differences and align to defeat the Reds. You know how to get to the important facts. Anyway, I hope your health is improving and you'll soon be ready to ding dong. Take it easy.

After learning much about the history of Eastern Europe in the last weeks and trying to understand the individual viewpoints, claims and events, my guess is that this region of Europe will seldom come to rest, especially when most of the neighbours of Ukraine (not only Russia) want to have a piece of Ukraine, have some political interest there and/or harbour history claims to parts of the country. Also, the internal infightings of the Ukrainian people does not make that easier. Really sad, what it is happening there.

That's very relatively "rich", of course. Just owning a single horse and a cow, a bit more land than their neighbors (not mentioning those who didn't have any) made a world of difference for peasants back then and there. And it affected their views towards the many factions in those turbulent, revolutionary times.

and why then did all these people fight and die if they were not a nation?)) you made very hasty conclusions. and about the end of the army... you are dead wrong. The fighting lasted until the mid-1920s. You can read about the Kholodny Yar Republic in the center of Ukraine. UNR army officers were killed by Russian agents abroad until the 1940s. Officers and soldiers of the Ukrainian People's Republic founded an underground organization abroad, which eventually grew into the largest self-organized army in Europe during the Second World War - the UPA, which fought on two fronts - against Hitler's Germany and against the Soviet system on the territory of Ukraine until 1953. It is quite normal that they were able to organize themselves into a government and establish diplomatic relations with Austria. Funny thing is that they didn't support Petaluma and the Polish army in the fight for independent Ukraine. Most of the Ukrainians fought angst independent Ukrainian on the Bolshevik's side.
