Build and review of the brand new 2019 Bombtrack Hook EXT-C carbon gravel bike. In this video Cyclist Pete takes you through the build, the components used and finally his thoughts on this ultimate custom gravel bike. Built as a do-it-all gravel monster, will this beast be able to handle everything from racing to bikepacking trips or will it fall tragically short of soaring expectations?

building up another bike and returned to this vid for a refresher. i really liked how organized you were and the order you chose to install parts. i have seen folks start with cranks, or wheelsets. i will probably start with seat post just to be able to hang the bike there. not sure it matters much. but in all the bikes you have built, what would you say is one bit of advice you think all newbies need to know (this is only my 3rd build). am curious your thoughts on using grease on carbon bits. am a huge fan of Slick Honey and use it for all things threaded (per the Park Tool School teachers). but have heard arguments for and against using greasing anything made of carbon. former owner claims to have been generous with grease on the PF BB and i found that he slathered the steerer tube of the Bombtrack fork with gobs of it. but when as if a reflex - i wiped it all off - the headset kept loosening. maybe a coincidence but after slathering it back up with lube, no more headset movement. and the mech who cut my Whisky fork on my CX bike also used grease on the steerer tube when installing. said all manufacturers do. also have seen grease pulling out seat posts from carbon seat tubes. i had thought it was a cardinal rule to not grease carbon seat tubes & posts. just wondering your thoughts on that. BTW - happy to say am loving my Bombtrack "Betty" so much am onto gravel bike build # 2 in the shape of a 2x11 Otso Waheela C. I also only ran the 650b tires on Betty for a hot second and can't say after running the 700's, like you started off with, that i would go back. am only using them on the new build until my 700c set can be acquired/built.

Hi, Pete - I just moved to Seattle last week. What route are your riding at the end of this vid? It looks amazing!!

@cyclistpete2090 3 года назад
Yo Micheal, right on, welcome to the area! There are clips from two areas. The b-roll shots at the end were in Lincoln Park in West Seattle. There are some cool trails in there, but not enough for a full ride, and its a little crowded to go fast through on nice days. But still a fun area to ride regardless! The shots from the little music video segment in the middle were on the Iron Horse trail, near North Bend. A pretty nice trail, very smooth and long, scenic on nice days too.

nice and super helpful. what size / brand screws/bolts did you use to mount the front caliper and rear brake to the triangle? i can't find any way to fit a HyRd post mount b/c the bolts are too large a diameter to screw into th front caliper mount holes, and in rear, even with adapters, i cannot get it to fit. i think rear takes 37mm bolts but i don't have those. and it looks like you're using a mounting plate too - if so which do i need? am really trying to avoid hydraulics b/c i am out of my depth there.
@cyclistpete2090

lillith bena hi Lilith. Glad you enjoyed the vid. Unfortunately I don’t have experience with post mount calipers, or using adapters. The mounting plate on mine came already installed on the caliper. I think if you posted this on the ‘bike wrench’ reddit with a photo, those guys would be able to help

@@cyclistpete2090 thanks for the reply. the previous owner sent bolt specs for the install of front and rear brakes. wondering whether you recall if the fork had an integrated crown race or not as the vid sped through that part. wondering b/c mine has an external crown race installed on it, and i know Bombtrack manufactures some of their forks with an integrated crown race. trying to rule out the reason the headset doesn't cinch up, and if the FSA headset crown race was installed on an integrated crown race, that would do it. former owner was also very generous with the grease (he said for waterproofing) and i have never seen that before, though before i cleaned it all off, it was tightening up better. also curious how you routed the rear brake cable. previous owner routed them both under the crank - and the rear brake has housing too. i've read that this can crack a crank set. if there were manufacturers stickers telling you how to route it, they were removed. hope you can shed a little light on this and the fork. TY~
@cyclistpete2090
@cyclistpete2090 4 года назад
Ah, good to hear about the specs for the brakes. I am fairly sure it was an integrated crown race, but its been long time since I put that all together. If I pull it apart soon, I'll let you know what I see. And for grease, I've been told by my bike shop that you will want to have a little in there, but not so much it makes a mess. For the brake routing, mine was done under the bottom bracket also. But I think either way would be fine, and I can't imagine the cable housing pulling with enough force to crack the bottom bracket shell.

Have you ride this bike on road? How is it on asphalt?
@cyclistpete2090
@cyclistpete2090 4 года назад
Hey Sergi. On the road it works great. The tires I used are a little large and soft, but if you added some pressure or used smaller tires, it would be right up with other comparably priced road bikes. I did a good amount of road riding this summer, and was always happy with how it rode.

I have one of these also, but built up with different components. Pretty much all Sram Force 1x. I opted for the 650b wheels with WTB Horizons set up tubeless, and I'm starting to wish I'd gone for 700c. The carbon EXT has greater tire clearance than their steel version, which I wasn't aware of at the time of purchase, so I'll be going as fat as I can when I do upgrade the wheels. Anyways, thanks for the slick vid, Pete.
@cyclistpete2090
@cyclistpete2090 4 года назад
It is an awesome bike. I've been happy with the 700c's. I put on wider tires since filming this, WTB RESOLUTE 42, but even with those, I feel like wider and more volume would be better. When the roads get rough, that extra size makes all the difference. What are you not liking about running 650b's?
@danwebb6766
@danwebb6766 4 года назад
@@cyclistpete2090 I could have more tire volume with a larger diameter rim. Bigger wheels roll smoother. I believe one should fit the largest wheels that will fit into the frame. If I were 5'6" tall on a small frame, 650b would be amazing. As it is, I feel like I'm under-biking. I'd think something like the Soma Cazadero (700c x 50mm) would be a better tire for both of us. It's what I'll be fitting when I do go ahead and change my rims.
@HOllyBOni
@HOllyBOni 4 года назад
@@danwebb6766 Big wheels with big tyres are cool, toe overlap with steep drop bar geo is very annoying tho. First i'd try some nice 27.5x2.25 XC tyres, that would make a bigger difference in terms of compliance and feeling "underbiked" than a 700c wheel will. Are you sure you can fit a 700x50 in the back? 2.25, tubeless, around 25psi. If that's still not enough, the next step is IMO suspension, not a larger diameter wheel. While I like to think that I can ride my gravel bike pretty much anywhere, I do also see that it's easy to reach a tipping point where any kind of generic XC hardtail with a suspension fork would be more comfortable, more efficient, faster, and most importantly more fun.
@cyclistpete2090
@cyclistpete2090 4 года назад
I agree with the toe overlap issue. It isn't a problem I'd say, but it can be pretty annoying. Interesting you think 27.5x2.25 wheels are the route to take. I have no experience with that size so I might have to try it for myself soon, as I want some more volume also. And yes, I am fairly certain this frame will fit 700x50c in the back, at least on this carbon model. I am riding with tires that measure out to 44mm and there is still a lot of clearance. And I agree with you for that, there is a point where XC hardtail would be more comfortable and preferable, although I feel like overall speed would be sacrificed, and a few extra lbs of weight would be added also, at a comparable price. Maybe some things to keep in mind.
@HOllyBOni
@HOllyBOni 4 года назад
I say 27.5x2.25 because that's the widest tire you can fit in the frame. 😁 (The stock build comes with 27.5x2.1) There are some very fast XC tyres in that size, like the Schwalbe Thunder Burt, Conti Race King or Maxxis Ikon. Also, you can definitely find tyres in the 700x50mm range, but generally speaking you will find the most 700c gravel tires in the 35-43mm range, and 29er MTB tires tend to start at 2.1 (which I doubt would fit). 700x50mm, or 2" is kind a no man's land, but there are definitely some options. My point is really that in Dan's case a much wider tire would make a bigger difference IMO than just a slightly wider but larger diameter one. Going from from a 650x47 to a 650x2.25 is a pretty big difference. Yeah there can be a weight difference for sure, whether that matters really depends what terrain you use the bike on. After a while a heavier bike with suspension and wider tires will simply beat the lighter rigid bike with narrower tires not just in comfort, but speed. Of course you shouldn't buy a gravel/adventure bike to only ride on MTB trails, I just feel like based on my experience it's pretty easy to overwhelm a gravel bike even on a rough double track dirt road, which can turn your ride into torture if you're going out into the unkown on a longer ride. 😢
