Quick tip regarding turn based mode: If you find yourself in a “oh sh*t!” moment such as setting off a trap, toggle it on so that the traps are also taking turns and not just endlessly bombarding you until you die.
230 hours into Baldurs Gate 3 over 4 full playthroughs (of act 1) played over the course of 2 and a half years, and I only now learned that you can click a button to make your entire party enter stealth at once
I'm games like this it can be super useful to check keybindings immediately. Even if you don't intend to use or change them there might be something in the list you didn't know existed. If that fails, anytime you're like "man I wish this or that existed" just do a quick Google search. If it does exist it will likely be at the very top and you won't even have to click on an article. For instance, I just Googled "can everybody stealth at once in BG3" and the first thing is a redirect post "PSA: You can stealth your entire party by pressing Shift+Z."
Wow! A true beginners guide! I'm totally new to this type of gaming and you did an amazing job explaining some of the controls and gameplay mechanics! Just subbed and hope to see more useful guides.
This is a great and PRACTICAL beginner's guide for us noobs. Larian's combat mechanics are so much deeper than any other RPGs, but that's why it can be a little tough to wrap your head around the sheer amount of possibilities. Thanks. You earned a sub for sure.
I was hesitant to buy this game because ive never played D&D or the previous Baldur's Gate games, but a friend who has been playing early access for 2 years convinced me. i am 10 hours in at this point and i love it! i didnt look at any guides beforehand, but i found the mechanics easy to learn. The graphics, story, characters, and voice acting are all fantastic! i can't wait for the final release! this guide is great!
Thank you! This is a very good guide. I just started playing DnD a month ago with my friends that have been playing for years. I'm liking it a lot. They also introduced me to Baldurs Gate 3. I learned a lot from this guide.
Regarding dialogue, you might instead pick the one you think will give you the best story outcome. This is a conversation that will have a large story outcome regarding what happens to the little girl. This is an important point that many people who haven't played CRPGs miss. You can't just scroll through dialogue. At times dialogue has a big effect on later choices.
Nice intro man. I just bought BG3 having completely forgotten the complexity of Larian Studio games. Thanks for the refresh, the game is looking great and so are your breakdowns. Looking forward to more good stuff from you. Thank you. L/s
Very cool stuff. One thing I want to mention is some settings are personal preference. Personally I prefer a north facing map. After driving truck for a decade, much of it with an actual paper atlas, my brain just works better when north is up and the map doesn't move. That being said if a developer does not make your map an arrow icon that moves real time when you turn they have failed. So excited for Aug 3rd. I too enjoyed BG 1 &2 during my late teens and early 20s. Been waiting a long time for a new one. Farewell and "Go for the eyes Boo!"
You earned a sub and sold a game. I've been scouring videos for some 'overall' broad coverage of this game and most especially the combat/encounter examples. I pretty much resigned to NOT getting this as I've no love for turn-based combat video games. You're couple of brief encounters showed me exactly what I've been looking for. Well done good Sir!
Thanks for the tips! I've played about 80 hours in early access and never once used the tactical camera - but it's really handy! I'll add a few tips of my own: If you split up the party and go stealthy, each character can enter the fight at a different time. For example, we sneak up to the enemy by Astarion, attack - he enters the fight. Switch to the next character and attack the same enemy - now you have two characters in the fight and two not. By that way, you can kill the strongest target before the turn goes to the enemy. And a tip for warlocks: don't forget about your familiar - it's your best ally. Imp, for example, can fly and become invisible. Assess the situation, find the weakest target, use Sting from invisibility, kill on the second turn and fly away from your pursuers. If you fly far enough away, the enemy will stop searching for you. The fight will also end if you use invisibility again or call off your familiar. All the time your main character can can stay out of the fight.
I'm in my 60s and never played D&D or anything like this - this is my first encounter with this type of game. Great to have resources like this to help with the drinking from the fire hose!
Those are some great tips. Really helpful for the players who already have an idea about the CRPGs cause most of the other guides are simply explaining the things I already know.
New to CRPGs. Decided to jump into BG3 as let's be honest the hype is uber-real! Thanks for your efforts in explaining all of this for new players. I will be subbing and coming back to learn more to get ready for launch!
@@kolz4ever1980 I did not say i do not want to save at all,but there is a difference if have 30 savespots or just 3. But yeah of course i could do it by my own rules, was just an idea.
Like Divinity Original sin 2, if you press " ' " ( the simple quotes left of the number 1 and above the tab button ), you can highlight all allys and enemies, making it easy to spot them
Great video! It would be very helpful to go over some tips on how to get advantage. I often found Astarian useless as he was never getting his surprise attacks off. It wasn't very clear how to get advantage for sneak attack to trigger. But it would also be useful to go over some other situations on how to gain advantage!
Press shift to see their line of sight get as close as you can to the red and then sneak, once in stealth use your sneak attacks. Highly recommend mobility feat if you are using melee sneak attacks so you can dash away and hide after every strike.
I've not played this type of game for over 20 years and have forgotten a lot of things... This was a great "catch up" whilst also being newbie friendly.
A truly excellent collection of tips and tricks, my brother! I forgot about the tactical view. I tried it when I first started my EA playthrough, but subsequently forgot about it. Thank you for making this video! It will surely help many new players.
Great video and explanation Renfail! as you, been a long time ago that I played the BG's originals and it was a good re-introduction on how D&D based games works. Thank you! And BTW, Love your Beard :D
Annoyed with D4 after this 1.1 patch. Looking forward to this game. Heard of the original BD wayyyy back in the day, and played a little, but this is looking super cool.
Same here man, BG3 is wicked fun for a single player and infinitely better in multiplayer. D4/10 be damned I’m spending my precious few hours throwing goblins off cliffs not getting bent about helltide chests!
Thanks. I played and even DM'ed D&D back in the late 70's and early 80's. Have played a bit now and then with my son's and family. But I am new to the PC world of D&D. So I am all ears on what you can learn me. LOL.
personally i think one of the most frustrating things for those who never played this type of game is that the hit chance is so low, later i know that lots of things contribute to that, like wearing wrong type of gear, etc, drove me crazy when i first played this game
Thank you for this video, I am extremely new to dnd and baldurs gate video games so this was all extremely helpful. Subbed and will continue watching good sir!
The biggest tip is that you can enter turn-based mode anywhere, because it's the ONLY "oh dung, my party is about to do something stupid" because Larian in their great wisdom didn't think to add a "stop" button. You know, "Hey, we noticed a trap! Anyways. We'll no walk right into it and explode. An ambush? Nah, it'll be k."
@@Renfail Overall I much prefer turn-based overall, especially with how Larian handles it. But I really hoped there was an option for "stop party when finding a trap" option or something.
I learned about quickload (F8) when one of my cats literally rolled his head along the top of my keyboard while I was almost at the end of a rough fight. To say I was displeased is putting it mildly, lol. Thanks for this guide. I haven't played a crpg in a very long time, so it'll be helpful to get back into the swing of things. p.s. Don't let your cat(s) lay next to your keyboard while playing BG3. Having to restart a fight can be a bit frustrating.
I havent played D & D since I was a kid (i think i stopped at 2nd edition?) but i did clock about 200 hours combined on DOS 1 & 2 and i still found your guide super useful with stuff i never knew and even the stuff i knew about came across as a great refresher. thanks for the video, can't wait to play BG3!
Nice guide! 👌 I'm very new to this all. Always wanted to play d&d tabletop... But this looks amazing. Only discovered this cause of a character creation video, love it. I suck at tactics and all that min maxing and inventory stuff, but i guess 'exploring mode' will be good for me. Now the hardest part will be decisions for class and companions 😅. Warlcok or wizard or druid for a noob? Can't wait to play. Thx for the nice videos.
This was a great video man. I didnt play much of the early access because i just didnt want to get spoiled before the full release and i also havnt played much DnD. I played it like once for about 5 hours a long time ago. I understand some things alot more now.
I've been waiting until this game was nearly out before buying it, now that it's not far away I've bought it. I've always loved rpgs and wanted to love crpgs, I've got them all but I just find most of them so dang hard for a newbie to get a hold of. Baldurs gate 3 actually seems somewhat welcoming but still makes most other rpgs look like crap in terms of depth. This is great
I don't know if Larian will split hairs about surprise, but technically per the tabletop rules after their turn in the initiative they can take Reactions. At the end of their turn the 'surprised' pseudo condition clears away. This mostly comes up for Opportunity Attacks, or the occasional surprise Counterspell.
Thanks. I somehow just cannot wrap my head around cRPG's. I tried Divinity and just got my shit pushed in. This game was no different. I managed to soft-lock myself in the early access version... I really want to play and enjoy this game, and this really helps.
I didn't even know about the surprise mode. Even though I played about 15 hours a couple weeks ago (don't want to play too much though since I can't continue my character).
I’m looking to get into bg3 after uninstalling Diablo 4 so this is the perfect vid to get Me into it since I have always been interested in dnd but never got into it!
Wow, I can't believe anyone would suggest using Save Scumming as a "Tip". If you want to excel in every dialogue roll, just go for a Hack or a Mod; in fact, Larian has already confirmed that they designed the game to accommodate both success and failure, which adds uniqueness to each playthrough. Regarding the QuickSave and QuickLoad tips, they are indeed excellent advice, for those who aren't accustomed to using Save Scumming. The rest of the video contains valuable insights as well.
I got the most out of surprise attack and map north option. I am trying to imagine a scenario where one party member is in conversation and the rest are positioning themselves for a surprise attack. You have another video on surprise, I don't think it would work that way sadly. I suppose if the conversation went south, it would be just roll for initiative. Do you think that it would be possible to pull that off?
One thing I'm curious about, when it comes to class specific dialogue, what happens when you multiclass? do you get all options for both class or only one?
Only thing i disagree with is advising people to save scum. Larian has made it clear that failing rolls generally opens up alternative paths instead of outright failing whatever you were working towards and save scumming to constantly win rolls would cause you to miss these kind of experiences. Play how you wish to of course, no real judgment, I just think people should give it a chance and roll with it first.
Right but if if I want to experience a certain option the first time through. The you save/reload. The fact that they made it like that is awesome and makes it even more fun to save scum. You people need to get off your high horse.
@@Renfail I was going to type the same comment, just like Faded Lich did. How wonderful it would be to play D&D, just to reroll your bad results over and over again, until the good result appear... Where do anyone think the entire fun of D&D reside on? To be with friends, yes, but the fun reside around those rolls because we cannot control the results, and our stats/items only give more chances, or less chance... What's the whole point of playing a turn by turn video game applying D&D rules, if everyone is breaking the most important rule, which is you are going to live with the number on your dice? It's just a video game to have fun, right, but BG3 is more then that. It's a lot of passion from many artists and took years to create it, but of course, you can play the way you prefer, like trying to jump somewhere you cannot, or dying a lot, lol.
Thanks mate I really appreciated this guide. I'm new to BG and also d&d but I've played dos2 so I hope that will help me understand the overwhelming amount of info . Question: I'll be playing on PC but I really hate using mouse and keyboard. Can I play effectively using my Xbox elite controller? I can map all my buttons plus the ones at the back of the controller. Thank you
I never played any games with this style, I got extremely overwhelmed. Also, i'm new to pc too. Got a headache after the first 5 minutes lol. this video helped but I need like a lot of free time to study these types of games cause it's seems so fun.
It is definitely a lot when it comes to these games but try your best not to over think things. I started playing these types when I was in middle school with Baldurs gate 1/2 and Icewind Dale. I made such rediculous choices at times and always found a way to get through the games. Have fun and experiment. Remember QUICK SAVE A TON! Don't get to hung up on getting everything right on your first play through.
@@Renfail I guess I wasn't clear. At 5:51 in the video, you have a bonus in nature/persuasion, but not in charisma. Are those the bonus on the character that started the conversation or the bonus between all your party members? Put another way, do any of your party members have a charisma modifier and if they did, would it show up here. Does that make sense? Put a third way, if I start a conversation with someone else in the party, would the bonus modifiers be same, or would they reflect only that new person. Does that make sense?
One thing I really want to know prior to release is whether or not you will get dialogue options for classes you have multiclassed into, or only the class you chose at the start of the game
@@Renfail So glad you've answered that! Was planning to go warlock 2/bard 10 but I definitely want the bard dialogue options, so bard at level 1 it is!
Hey there. Thanks for the vid, I'm totally new to this style of game and D&D starting my 1st playthrough tonight as fighter with sword and board to get a feel for the game mechanics 🙌 just wanted to ask about the karmic dice. I was told to turn them off as it helps the enemy 🤷♀️ I don't even know anything about the karmic dice or what they do so just wondered your opinion on turning them off? Thanks again for the help 😎
Karmic dice remove some of the "randomness" of classic D&D and tabletop. Normally you might have runs of really bad (or really good) rolls, and Karmic dice remove the "runs" from the element, so that you won't suffer from runs of bad (or good) rolls. If you want the classic tabletop experience, keep them turned off.
@@Renfail thanks so much for the quick reply and explanation 😎 I watched your beginners class guide that also helped me out a ton 💪 I'm going to go through more of your vides later so thanks for the great work 🙌 would you keep karmic dice turned on for a complete noob to this game then?
Do you know of any good resources for multiplayer guides? I'm new to d&d and BG and from what I've been reading, there are a lot of nuances as they relate to multiplayer. Examples would be things like tips on party building based off of class/stats/diversity. Apparently there's something called the "face". Attack priorities, etc. Sorry for the long winded comment! If there is no good resources out there, it's at least a good video idea 😊 cheers!
Btw I am really curious how larian will handle Greater Invisibility spell. AFIK, only true seeing counters that. However GI is lvl 4 spell and TS is lvl 6 spell, so chances are, by the time you aquire greater invis enemies will have no means to counter it... So what do they do? 1) Search for me, but what is the point they can't see me... 2) They know where I am and attack me with aoe, but that is cheating, since they are not supposed to know where I am if I am invis... 3) They just sit there confused/wander around while I chip them down... (remember greater invis is for 1 minute and you can always recast it, as long as you have spell slots) So how exactly are enemies on tactician mode gonna handle this thing...
@@Renfail Yeah can't wait to dive into tactician on first playthrough. Where enemies will hunt down my squishy companions. Well I intend to have everyone under invisibility and also nobody will be squishy, so let's see how that goes for them 😂😂
