My headcanon is that Buzz goes into toymode as an instinctive reflex that all toys have, whether or not they believe they're real. Not doing so it just an easier version of holding your breath. I also belive Buzz subconsciously knows he's a toy but is in deep denial until the commercial completely shatters the illusion.
