The Ultimate Guide to Flying a Holding Pattern in DCS World

Hey guys! As I see the overall skill level of the pilots in my community and other communities like the RED FLAG group go up and up and up, one aspect of airmanship skills unfortunately still lags behind, Holding Patterns, whether in the Marshall Stack pre-push, as part of a CASE III or other ATC ordered actions.
Holding patterns and the fundamentals of how to fly one, are one of the most important foundational building blocks in a pilots aeronautical education and tool kit. Not only are they utilized by ATC for functions as diverse as the Marshall for a CASE III approach to an aircraft carrier, a place to put a pilot who went missed on an ILS Approach and needs some time to set up for the next one, and is also the underlying principles behind aspects of tactical flying such as flying a CAP Station, time on target calculations or setting up a Grinder for a BVR Fight!
At this point you might be asking, Spud, why can't I just anchor over a fix and fly a circle around it? Why do I need to fly a fancy Holding Pattern?
And the answer is Fuel Savings, Fuel Savings, Fuel Savings.
When flying in a circle you have your aircraft rolled to left or right, and this splits your lift into vertical and horizontal components which means we cannot develop enough vertical lift component to support the weight of our aircraft and maintain altitude unless we increase the angle of attack of our wings. This is why we have to pull back on the stick in a turn to maintain altitude.
This in turn creates more induced drag as a result of our higher angle of attack and increased lift, which means we have to increase our thrust in order to maintain airspeed and thus we expend a lot more gas flying in a circle than a holding pattern with straight legs.
And if we are waiting in the Marshall Stack prior to Push, we definitely want to save as much gas as possible for attacking our target, dodging SAMs and dogfighting MiGs!
For today’s demonstration we are going to be demoing how to fly a Holding pattern in relation to a Marshall stack for a Strike Package.
Thus we will be utilizing a holding pattern diagram with leg length expressed in Nautical Miles instead of time and we will be flying a bit faster than best endurance airspeed to speed up the demonstration.

Hey guys! Keep in mind that everything we talk about in this video applies to all aircraft in DCS not just the F/A-18C! Also dont get too wrapped around the axel with making it absolutely perfect, but we need to at least be somewhere in the ballpark for holding patterns!

Spudknocker - These are my favorite types of DCS vids: basic airmanship, marshalling, being on time, at a waypoint, at the assigned altitude. And the rules of thumb to help us remember. This is how DCS helps my GA flying, in and out of Class A airspace. Thanks for the effort of publishing these. Curious if these video topics pull as well as systems/AG tutorials?

Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t but I guess we shall see! The funny thing is the better your airmanship skills the easier it is to employ weapons in my experience!

How to hold is EASY. Practice ENTRY to hold - teardrop, parallel, direct.. That's where you get good practice. This HAS to be done "under the hood" or in a limited visibility situation (preferably in IMC). That is why this video is valuable. It shows the rudiments and how to fly them. I've got a few hrs and I still find this sort of practice valuable. You should also get into the habit of setting your heading bug on the reciprocal heading so you can fly that accurately on instruments... (you did this on the video; I am talking to prospective instrument pilots out there..)

Have to say for efficiency let “George” do the flying. He can make smoother turns, stay on altitude and lessen pilot workload. Suggest BAR HOLD, AUTO THROTTLE and use the HEADING BUG to steer. (Bind the bug to a knob L&R. Good review though on the only thing more onerous than bleeding: holding.
@aaronzeiger216
@aaronzeiger216 Месяц назад
A little CFII trick. To calculate a reciprocal heading in your head, add 200 then subtract 20. Or subtract 200 and add 20 depending on which way the math is easier. Quick IFR cockpit math under stress.

Holding patterns are tooooough! I am only 5 months into DCS, and I am getting better at maintaining stable flight, but it's still tough. Patterns and flying formations will both really help me out a lot in multiplayer. I am still on a Logitech Xtreme 3D Pro but I am saving up for a VBK at the moment. I think that will help with accurate and precise flight.

Guess I never gave this much thought. We just punch alt hold, set the auto throttle and maintain our turn as we are in the stack or marshaling around an IP.

Thank you for leading with WHY to fly a holding pattern and what it actually is. I absolutely thought "pfft I know how to circle around a point, that's easy peasy, why bother to do anything else?" until I read the description.

Holding patterns ? *laughs in MiG-29A fuel endurance* of all my main aircrafts I'm flying, the MiG-29 doesn't have the endurance to do long CAPs and is essentially a point defense interceptor, the Viggen is designed to go straight to point, attack and egress, but this might be usefull for my Mirage F1 and Mirage 2000.

So, the distance on the outbound leg is calculated diagonally and doesn't take that into account when measuring the legs? I would estimate that your turns are at least a five mile radius but maybe the point is just to know when to turn and not to have the math work out correctly.
@Spudknocker
@Spudknocker 2 месяца назад
Hey man! No need to get wrapped around the axel on that, it’s close enough haha if you look at the tacview overhead view in the chapter start and the video intro you can see there’s no real difference between the leg lengths
@josefwitt9772

Some of this seems similar to the GA oriented pattern entry stuff I looked at years ago for MSFS. The parallel entry confuses me a bit though - seemed for a minute like it's designed to maximize opportunities to cause a collision. But then I realized I guess it's a stack, so you're at the assigned altitude for your flight / section or what have you. Doh! Probably missed that part because I'm half paying attention and doing some monotonous work stuff at the same time (with a low risk for messing up of course). Thinking of the purpose being to get the gaggle all in one place... OK it's not rocket science but this is sinking in as far as how to participate or possibly use it at some point.
@KrustentierBarbier
@KrustentierBarbier Месяц назад
Yep, you get separated by altitude, so it is no problem to fly opposite to where everyone else is going (along the pattern) for the entry.

Another reason not to do a circular hold, is what it does to standby attitude. Any particular reason why 30 degree roll turns is preferred?
@redtailpilot
@redtailpilot Месяц назад
When you bank the wings, you trade in a portion of vertical lift component to the horizontal. Anything more than 30 degrees is approaching a steep turn (45+). Increasing load factor, requiring greater back pressure on the yoke/stick (which increases AOA, lift and drag) to maintain altitude. Which in turn requires more thrust to compensate for the increased drag. Stall speed also increases as your bank angle increases. The aircraft's overbanking tendency increases as well. None of this is desirable when flying IFR/IMC and could lead to spatial disorientation and other problems.

You've got to understand the massive advances in avionics that has occured over the last 40 years. The G1000 panel in my Cessna is several generations more advanced than the avionics in the F/A-18C. Compared to airliners, the -C is ancient.
