I have just started quilting. So this is perfect to help me start off organized.

I'm happy to hear you are starting to quilt. My recommendation is that you don't over buy fabric. It's so easy to do and there will always be something new out. My best regards.

Several good ideas and I hope to get started today. Next I need help with the extra squares, strips and funky sized pieces that accumulate!!

If any paper is not for sure acid free, if it’s sturdy it can be lightly misted with baking soda or washing soda water to dampen and then iron dry or dry in a flower press to neutralize any acid remaining in the paper

I started yesterday by moving some Jelly Rolls, FQs ( in sealed pkg's), 10 in sq's, charm sq's to a lower cupboard. I pressed fabrics that are 1-3 yds, to get fabric out of guest room. I will put these on boards then clean up the mess the painter left in the middle of sewing room floor. I am making progress. Never enough Fabric, always buy more!

Thank you so much! I have fabric crammed haphazardly in so many bins that sewing is often frustrating (therefore I don't do it). This is exactly what I needed to jump start creating a more organized stash for sewing!!!

Lovely. I was just using Amazon boxes cut down but I can now see they are not acid free for long term storage. ❤

I do keep my fabric organized, but I’m a bit crazy about the raw ends on the yardage fabrics. I use two comic boards, one on each end of the final fold. I wrap them towards each other so they open like a book when finished. It is a bit fiddly to get the two boards to come together in the middle (somewhere, not exactly the middle), but it is so much less annoying than pulling out a fabric that is bent, folded and crumpled on the leading edge due to fabric being taken in and out of the shelf. (Yes, I do realize this is just a little bit obsessive, but I don’t have a big stash, so it isn’t dysfuntional in this instance.)

How to organize fabric that is shy of a FQ but not yet scrap-size
@nikkireynolds9514
@nikkireynolds9514 26 дней назад
So what do you do about yardage that is folded off-grain? Do you take the time to verify that the fold that “came off the bolt” results in truly parallel selvedges with no diagonal lines from the fold?

Enjoyed your ideas. Do you store your fabric according to texture. Thank you.

Yes, I store them first based on substrate (linen, quilting cotton, double gauze, etc...) then by color.

Thank you! Great video, I’ve now refolded my fat quarters, on to fold the rest of my stash. I’m curious, what are those clear containers you’re using for the fat quarters and half yards (or meters, in my case 😉)

Thanks! Glad you like it, and I hope you’re having fun folding! There’s a link to the containers in the video description and towards the end of the blog post :) They sell out fast, so grab some right when you see them!

0:20 how do you fold less than a FQ? Let’s say you’ve cut out a 5x5 square?

I am getting ready to start officially organizing and storing my fabric in my new designed ,cabinets made for my sewing room. My concern is really how to store my FQs, layer cakes, charm sqs, jelly rolls in my new cabinets, drawers. Before, my FQs were in shoe divider cupboards by color and flat cottons in one, batiks in another. Now there is no room for those, and they do not fit with the Alderwood of my cabinets and drawers. What is the best way to store these pre cuts? I am thinking of just putting them in the larger lower cupboards.

The link for the bins takes you to a two section bin. On your video I see at least a 4 section bin. What is the link for those bins? It would be nice to know the dimension for the bins and how many sections are within. It is puzzling when the link takes you to a product not quite the same. Thanks, any insight you can give is appreciated.

Hi! When you go to the link, all you have to do is click the bottom under size that says “12 x 12 x 4” and it shows the four compartment size. Then you can purchase it! The company sells out sometimes, so if it’s out of stock, keep checking!

It’s hard to see that pocket with the lightest of fabrics! But head to the blog post for some close up pictures that will help you be able to see the tidy tuck pocket better :)
