The is the Ultimate Guide to making paper minis for tabletop roleplaying games, wargames, or anything where you just might want to throw some little paper miniatures on the table. I take you through all of the needed supplies, where you can find minis, how I craft them, and how I store them.
Bear with me, it's my first video for RU-vid. Please hit me up in the comments with any questions and I'd be glad to answer as they come in.

[EDIT: I DID THIS! Link below...] I'll work on this! I'll at least do battle mats, and Ultimate Dungeon Terrain. Probably I'll do little paper dungeon features as well. Very, very uncertain as to whether I'll do like, the large buildings. But I'd consider it! What are YOU most interested in?

Baller. Not gonna lie, paper miniatures saved the hobby for me. After painting about 30 miniatures and still needed a wider variety, I gave them away to a friend and almost just kind of gave up. I like your solution, I'll incorporate some of the aspects for sure. Thanks for posting.

I made more than 80 paper minis for like 5€ (went to a professional printer). I customise the size o a document word and print on paper. Then stick to cereal cardstock and base with foamcore. If you want to store them flat you can always just leave a straight cut on the foamcore base and use it with different minis. Great video mate! 👌

I love this video! We use paper minis in all of our games (roleplaying and tabletop), and have done so for quite a few years. Its affordable and easy to put together, and they have a uniqueness of their own. There are lots of great makers out there as well. I am a fan of Trash Mob Minis, and Sundered Vault they both have great cartoon styles. Sundered Vault's games are good too, but I use their historical minis (WW2 and Napoleonics) a lot!

I started with paper minis when I first got into DND and while I still have a ton of them I've also adopted 3D minis for at least the player characters. Paper minis are fantastic for grunts and other monsters that don't NEED full fledged minis i.e. orcs and goblins and other low level stuff. My quick and dirty method is glueing a bunch of index cards together back to back for strength with tacky glue, glueing the printouts onto the cards, sealing them with packing tape, cutting them out with a combo of scissors and a box cutter, and then marking up the sides with black permanent markers to hide the white edges. For stands I use assorted sizes of binder clips and just pop off the metal arms you use to open them when they're properly based. 😁
@Jack-gs6sd
@Jack-gs6sd 4 месяца назад
Damn dude, that's a hell of a process!! Yes, I've heard of the binder clip trick before, that's a really good hack! Haha, I'd love to see a photo of what the completed process looks like.

love that you made a video like this. I've been using paper mini's like these for a few years now too. I figured, why spend so much time and money on 3d minis of monsters that are going to die so quickly? I would recommend a paper cutter if you were looking to drop a bit more money into your process. I got a silhouette portrait and its made my process faster and more consistent. The free Silhouette Studio software is also very helpful to formatting paper minis to print out. I personally enjoy using photo paper and spray adhesive for my mini's but it does cost more but folks should start where they can and do what works for them. One last thing, Paper Mage is another great paper mini artist that you might add to your list.
@Jack-gs6sd
@Jack-gs6sd 7 месяцев назад
I'll tell you what, while I PERSONALLY like to keep things very slim, low-budget, accessible, cheap, etc... people who get those paper cutters like Cricut and such are absolutely fanatical about them, and I tend to trust those kinds of reviews. I don't anticipate trying them - personally, I like having my hand-cutting time sitting in front of Netflix or whatever - but I think the testimonials are strong. And also, I think if you want to make paper TERRAIN, which needs very precise cutting, I think they're probably indisposable. But also, thanks for recommending Paper Mage! I've added them to the list. Glad you liked the video so much :)

I like to draw my character from the rear side too, basically I trace the front outline and draw again from the back , so when drawing a character from the front I try to do the feet standing on plane level that won't messed up the perspective when the outline is reused to draw it from the rear side. I like to use grey as their background to blend better over the battlemap, I plan to stuff the center part of my character to make them slightly conical make it more visible from the side/ less flat profile view perhaps I will glue in a flattened boba straw in the center of the character , I cut them all oval shape not following their idividual shape, but I fill in some of the grey background with either flag or crest of their faction so they look more like part of an army.

My Canon G7020 only goes to 53lb paper (per the specs). It's worth checking your supported paper types because heavier stuff can get jammed a lot if it's outside of the spec. Especially the case if your printer has a duplex unit.
@Jack-gs6sd
@Jack-gs6sd 5 месяцев назад
Oh dang, very interesting! I wonder if my printer technically supports the weight I've been throwing at it (like 70-90lbs). I think where you really get into trouble is printers that really have to bend the paper a lot as it goes through the machine (like a big office printer). Have you... tried putting 70lb stock through it before?
@2mOlaf

i have been using paper minatures for years. but i dont use Cardstock to print on i use paper. and why i do that is because after i glue them togetter i then go 2 steps more. 1 i pain the edges and sometime give more colors on the minatures by tush. after it all dry. then i laminate them and then i cut them out 1 more time. and the reason is my mintures i have last for months even years. and then i used my 3d printet stands with numbers on so easy to keep track on the battle field

Even cheaper alternative for bases, pick up a pack of small binder clips, clamp it onto the mini and then pop out the little handles. You can even get multicolored ones to color code the enemies or whatever. These clear bases seem great, but just thought I'd throw out this cheaper option. I've been using JP Coovert's paper mini design, which works great but they don't lay flat for storage, so I might be trying out a hybrid between these methods. Speaking of: @JPCoovert is a fantastic resource for learning how to draw your own characters for minis, and make maps and dungeons, and all that. So if you want to make your own artwork to combine with these DIY minis, or can't find artworks that fits what you want, he's a great channel to check out. He also has a pack of all the minis needed for the Lost Mines of Phandelver.
@Jack-gs6sd
@Jack-gs6sd 5 месяцев назад
Oh that's so fun! While I prefer transparency, I could definitely see how binder clips would be great too, especially since you could write on them with wet erase, and they'd have a nice big surface so you could see what was written even at a distance. Brilliant idea! I love JP Coovert's work, he seems like a great guy :)

@Jack-gs6sd
@Jack-gs6sd 3 месяца назад
I think I mentioned in the video, but I actually prefer the white big time! It's just a personal thing, but I think when you have the black borders, you lose a lot of the details. Also, not ALL minis makers do the black borders, and so you end up getting minis that don't match each other. Everyone makes white backgrounds, though!

Hi Jack! Im a big Pathfinder second edition player and conditionds in that system are very important to keep track of. Ive seen the plastic ring method, which seems good, but curious if you think it would work for paper minis? Also pathfinder conditions can become alot, and some of them are at different levels (e.g frightened can go up to level 3 or even 4 in game)
@Jack-gs6sd
@Jack-gs6sd 5 месяцев назад
Hey, two things here! 1. One thing you could do is write the conditions on the plastic litko base. Wet erase should be great, so long as you're not struggling to fit it all on one base. 2. Rings should absolutely still work, considering Litko bases come in various standardized sizes -- there's no reason, I think, that you can't use whatever method of tracking you use for other minis! Thanks so much for the question!
