Most guitarists say they only "know" the pentatonic scales... In my experience, they actually only know one or two shapes of the minor pentatonic, thereby missing out on all the amazing melodic possibilities that the pentatonic has to offer.
In this video, I will show you how to REALLY MASTER the pentatonic scale, once and for all!
We will explore topics such as:
- What are pentatonic scales
- The difference between major and minor pentatonic
- All the shapes of major and minor pentatonic in CAGED
- Relative and parallel pentatonic
I will also give you a STEP-BY-STEP practice method to allow you to really get to the next level of playing the pentatonic scales.

You by far are the best teacher I’ve ever seen for music. I’ve been stuck on the plain for about 5 years now. Please don’t shorten these lessons up. Everyone does 15 to 30 minute videos but the way you explain not only the theory but how to use it just works so well. It’s helping me fill in the huge holes I’ve had and I’ve been playing for 15 years so I can only imagine what this does for beginners.

Wil, merci! Mahalo! On my self-taught journey I've cobbled together a fundamental grasp of music theory as it applies to the guitar. Over the past four years, I've sponged up this knowledge from Zombie Guitar, Chris Sherland, and Guthrie Trapp, primarily, plus several others. Lately, I've been working on Charlie Long's triad and pentatonic exercises and Jack Ruch's dominant 7ths and blues licks tutorials. I understand how the cage system works and what intervals are, and my technique and capacity to apply these principles to the instrument have been advancing, albeit incrementally. Then I stumbled into your deep dive explanation of intervals. What stunning clarity! Somehow you seem to have touched on all the murky unanswered questions struggling to take shape in my mind. These are questions, that, of course, need to be answered for me to pick up the pace. The same can be said of the next one of your videos that I watched, your deep dive into the caged system. And now I'm about to rewatch this one on pentatonics. You do a terrific job of explaining the context in a linear way that answers many of the 'why' questions I have. Thank you, especially, for your tip about correlating the pentatonic patterns to the caged chord shapes, starting at the root (which can be on the D string, in the case of two of the shapes) instead of always struggling to reference sequential "boxes" that all start on the low E string. This is pure gold! Adopting this won't take long -- and I can see how mastering this alone will lead me to a higher tier. You've given me hope that, before all is said and done, I might even come to understand how to proactively apply modes -- something I had to this point, assumed, was unattainable. Thank you for your commitment to share your knowledge in such a thorough way -- for the greater good. It's admirable -- and greatly appreciated!

Dude! I was looking at a zillion tutorials lately, having a hard time putting the pieces together. Your video is by far the best summary on the subject. Thanks so much for that really! You totally won me at minute 46:33 ("sorry, if you wanna be serious about playing guitar, you've gotta learn to do these things"). That's the message that I was missing in so many videos. Great authentic style of teaching! Good luck with your channel.

This one video cleared up so many questions, especially questions related to modes. I have been struggling with modes for so long and it’s primarily because of people teaching about modes that don’t really have a firm grasp what they’re all about. This is the absolute best explanation of their application I have ever come across. I can’t thank you enough.

I have finally made it through the whole lesson. What a treat! You are so generous with your talent and teaching. I’m a Singer, who has been playing now for five years since retirement. I’m going to be 70 in February. I already knew all of the boxes which I learned as boxes of the major and minor pentatonic. I can play them backwards and forwards, and be kind of melodic with them. After this lesson I feel more in tune with the entire fretboard. I have progressed to the point where soloing with a major and minor pentatonic is not challenging for me anymore. I want to learn the whole fretboard and how to connect everything, and how to play better technically thanks again Guillaume. I will be awaiting further lessons when you put them up on you tube. Peace and Love Todd B.

Average beginner; learn as much as you need to start playing as fast as possible, to sound as good as possible, move on to copy something flashy that sounds good as fast as possible, then repeat. Then in a few years we sound pretty good and never go back to these basics. This is eye-opening to look back at what I should have learned first, so many years ago. I needed this! Badly. I shared it with a friend who is presently in the studio recording the groups 2nd album. He said the same thing.

A most valuable lesson which helped me see the light. For ages I was locked into the "box system" which kept me in ongoing confusion. The most confusing tutorials are those that say something like "Box 2 of the minor pentatonic equals Box 1 of the major pentatonic" etc. and there's even discrepancy about the actual numbering of the boxes. Learning major and minor pentatonic scales separately, understanding the intervals involved and linking the scale shapes to the underlying major or minor chord is by far the best way to master this. Many thanks!

Amazing! The importance of knowing exactly where you are in the fretboard its essential for playing gigs, where you may be surprised with a unknown song, or a take in a solo, i'd only add that learning where your intervals are will help a great way, finding the Major 3° on the fly, the Perfect 5th, making the relation between the interval position with the chords on fly does a lot into delivering your best performance!

Great video Will. From personal experience, I know what you are saying. Knowing the 5 shapes of the minor pent (one after the other up the neck) and then learning the major shapes only as they are related to the minor shapes is like saying you know the English language because you know the alphabet from A to G. If you stop there because you don't have the perseverance to take it further, you are done - end of progress. That is why I am here - it only took a couple of minutes listening to what you had to say to know that you understand this common problem among us wannabe twang bangers. OK enough, I'm off to listen to the rest of your presentation hoping I can muster up the discipline to work at what you are saying. WILL METZ, make a YT lesson when mixing shapes and cross shapes in each Box#1 thru Box#5. This is what Jerry Garcia would play using CAGED but also chord inversions. The CAGED system is just root position on the low E string or A string is the root note. Jerry Garcia would use 1st inversion CAGED and 2nd inversion CAGED system plus adding the pentatonic CAGED shapes to the pentatonic scales. You should make a 1st inversion CAGED which is when the bottom low E or low A is the 3rd scale degree and 2nd inversion CAGED is when the bottom low E note or low A note is the 5th scale degree to make YT lessons about.

You are so darn cute ! Not hitting on you just stating a fact. Besides, you're too young for me anyway. I am thoroughly enjoying your videos. Trying to teach myself guitar ( and French ) at age 59. When I get really good I'll move to the French alps and play there ! A bien tot et merci! If I had lots of money I'd send you some....but I am not killing it driving a school bus. I am happy though. Thank you for teaching me something new every day. Never too old to learn something new

I think your diagram has a mistake on the C min pentatonic shape, the flat 3rd placement is incorrect for one position. It should be a flat 7.

I should point out you mentioned learning" shapes' rather than "boxes", yet the "shapes" you refer to are simply boxes. The only practical way of learning any scale is knowing the names of every note in the scale and knowing the interval name of every note in the scale. Knowing the names of the notes and the interval names of each note is the only way a player can fully understand the fretboard and attain the ability to play the scale anywhere on the fretboard at any time. The assembly of notes can be viewed as a shape or box, but it's best to avoid "boxing yourself into thinking of scales as shapes, patterns and boxes. Learning the names of the notes and their interval names frees you to play any scale you want anywhere on the fretboard at any time without thinking in terms of patterns, shapes or boxes. Learn correctly the first time and you will avoid having to learn the correct way later. The only pattern you should memorize is the order of notes in the scale you are playing: The pattern for G major pentatonic is G,B,D & E: G is the root note, B is the major 3rd, D is the perfect 5th, and E is the major 6th. Learning the note and interval names of any/every scale you practice and play will move your playing forward, where you want to go!

I’m trying to see what I can grab from the video and this contrasting view of the video as a complete beginner (2 months). I prefer patterns over shapes as a software engineer.

@@FitKorelearn interval relations. I PROMISE it will be the most productive thing you will ever do on the guitar. Intervals are the basic component of ALL patterns on the guitar - and every instrument you ever want to play. If you want some great lessons for free, Jake Lizzio from Signals Music Studio here on RU-vid has literally built the most comprehensive lesson package a beginner/intermediate player can get for free. Watch every video you can on intervals. It may be confusing at first but if you keep watching and just picking up one little thing each time, you will have it down in no time. The great thing about this is that eventually when you master your intervals everything else comes easy. Everything from understanding chord construction and being able to build any chord anywhere on the neck, to being able to improvise and never hit a "wrong" note. You suddenly realize that you are a musician, not just another Peter Repeater.

I am writing this so @Guillaumemetz can erase this if he wants. I find this channel very helpful. The only way i understand is with the same thing explained between 4 great teachers from youtube. Ricky Comisky, Stitch method guitar, Steve Stein (yes the guitarist of dream theater). All fantastic along with Guillaume. All teach this lesson in their own fantastic understandable way with bits of gold thrown in.
