Hi welcome to a review of the ultimate roofing square I’ve been using it for around 3 months now and it’s well worth buying www.essential-carpenter-tools....

Thank you for mentioning left handers. It is a consideration rarely mentioned in carpentry presentations. It is up to us to adapt, but it is always worth knowing just how much adaptation is required.

Your welcome I try and give a honest opinion the dargan square is perfect to use left handed I have a video on it on my channel and it’s also a lot cheaper

@@marlowjoinery9783 Thank you. I have just watched that video and researched retailers. The Dargan will suit my needs. I haven’t bought any tools this week. It’s Wednesday tomorrow, and I was getting worried that I wouldn’t find anything before Friday. You’ve found me a tool in time for my weekly purchase, and you’ve saved me sixty quid. Nobody can say that your channel isn’t left handed friendly, haha.

Thanks for demonstrating it. Whats the difference between the metric and the imperial square, surly a degree is a degree whether its metric or imperial ?
@marlowjoinery9783
@marlowjoinery9783 2 года назад
Hi the imperial square is the American version they work in rise up to 12 so a 12/12 would be 45 degrees and a 6/12 is 26 degrees etc thanks for watching

Good video, thanks. So just to clarify… the user would need to know exactly what the pitch angle is before using it? Also what if the wall plate the birds mouth isn’t perfectly parallel with the ridge board all along the full length? Thanks
@marlowjoinery9783
@marlowjoinery9783 2 года назад
Hi thanks for watching. yes you would need to know the pitch but if you don’t and it’s an up and over apex style roof you can either hold some wood up to the height you like and and draw a vertical line on the rafter and match the square to it or get very funky with the math. But if the wall plate is out to the ridge I’d try my best to pull the wall plate square there’s nothing worse than cutting rafters all different lengths. But have you tried any roofing apps ? that what I use

To get the pitch angle it's rise ÷ run = answer 2nd function tan eg 1m rise ÷ 1m run = 1 ,, 2nd tan = 45 degrees set the square and way you go ! Regarding length on say a lean to roof ,mark out 1/3 of plumb cut from top rafter down put this mark level with the ridge a nail in the end will help hold this up ,now rest the rafter on the wall plate and mark the bottom side place this square so the bottom is on the mark and draw birdsmouth when it's cut out imagine the whole rafter sliding down the 1/3 amount

Us left handers are used to it. .Electric power tools aren't left handed either, so if you've lost the dust bag you get a face full of sawdust.🤥

Its sad we dont teach the next generation how to use a traditional framing square anymore. Its so easy to use and gives you every angle you could possibly need. Throw a purlin into the mix and this square fails.

Hi Martin, thanks for your comments. A traditional roofing square is taught in colleges, as it’s part of the curriculum, however the few lectures that I speak to tell me that as they have a Ultimate roofing square the young chaps prefer this as it helps them understand the angles. Once they can understand them it will give them confidence in years to come whether they choose using a pattern rafter, a couple of bevels or other roofing squares.

@@Ultimate-roofing-square. when I was at college 99% of it was on site. Id have to take pictures and write about what I’d done so the traditional framing square was a very brief lesson that was it but I will buy Robbin clevett’s when he brings it out and use that to see if it’s as good as your square but your square being able to mark the birds mouth is a real game changer it’s so easy

@@marlowjoinery9783 I believe Robins square is very similar to a traditional roofing square. Personally with apps and a speed square, or my square the traditional one is slightly out of date now. Thanks, glad you still like it.

@@Ultimate-roofing-square. most decent chippies I know only use the Gibson square. It’s hardly out of date. Who wants to get their phone out on an app in the rain. The traditional square can set everything out. Backing bevels, purlin lip cuts, layboards. It’s just a bit daunting to learn but simple once you know how. My apprentices will only learn from this square but your square is definitely a bonus for the more beginner roofing carpenter. Plus I set out stairs with my square and repeatability is key , as you are aware.

@Ultimate-roofing-square. 2 года назад
@@BillyMustang101 funny I don’t know any chippies that use a Gibson, even bad ones… I think we both know our way around roofing squares and their limits, uses. Many carpenters I do speak to only pitch a roof occasionally and soon forget traditional methods.
