The Ultimate Seafood Catch & Cook (Sustainable Harvesting)
Spearfishing Lingcod & Rockfish. Hand harvesting Octopus, Dungeness crab and Sea Cucumber. Digging for Manila Clams and walking the beach for Pacific Oysters. In British Columbia, it's all possible if you don't mind getting cold and dirty. In this episode, we have some epic visibility while freediving in Nanoose Bay, we have some luck while looking for crabs, I score on finding some old bottles and we have the ultimate seafood catch & cook with Jasmines family!

I discovered your channel two weeks ago and I’m slowly going through all your content. What can I say… quality! Each one is a 10/10. Great footage, editing, knowledge, soundtrack. You are knocking it out of the park. As a person who has spent my entire life on Vancouver Island I am really enjoying all the learning I am getting through your videos. Respect!

Haha amazing man, thanks for the views and comment! I'm stoked people enjoy the videos. Freediving/spearfishing can be a big learning curve, especially locally in cold water. Vancouver Island has some amazing diving and it's a shame more people don't explore it. Happy I can light the fire for some and get them out there!

Man barefoot through those oysters everywhere, hope you didn't accidentally step on one...lol Nice harvest and 100% agree why do we buy our seafood from another country when its all here, and hope they soon close all the fish farms.

Runnns around the house fist pumping the air-yelling" *SUNSTAR in NANOOSE BAY spotted* Ohhhh please let it survive n' thrive. Superior visibility & footage Mr. Samson! It is cra-cra how close to edge of land all the varied houses are! Wow---sooo 'the family' came afar and over yonder?! 'That' must have been fuuun. Am sure the babies were all-about-it. Pretty much all the immediate family came down, it was great. Some stayed with us, and the others rented an Airbnb. The kids had a blast!

I’m curious if you are concerned about toxins and bacteria in our seafood in this area? Amazing at how much is available with a little knowledge:) great video!
@PNWSamson
@PNWSamson 2 года назад
I ensure I follow all the regulations and best practices when it comes to harvesting, transporting, preparing and cooking my shellfish so I'm not concerned. Figuring out the regulations can be a little daunting though that's for sure. I delayed harvesting shellfish until I had someone show me how it's done and it's much easier than I thought. If you harvest from closed areas you could definitely pay the price for it. Contaminated shellfish is no laughing matter! And for sure man, so much available. Cheers!
@pebbIe5
@pebbIe5 2 года назад
I was just near that area, but saw signs everywhere for red tide and warning against consumption of shellfish. Although the signs seem to be up all year round. I believe it is safe to consume during the winter as there is less of this paralytic bacteria around. How do you know whether or not you can consume the shellfish?
@PNWSamson
@PNWSamson 2 года назад
You have to check the DFO's website. Things can change day by day. Basically you find the area you plan on harvesting from. For example, most of Nanaimo falls under area 17. From there, check the sub area. Once you have that pinned down, look for sanitary closures within that sub area. Even though a sub area may be open, there are still places one must avoid. Marinas, sewage outflows, places with industrial activity and river mouths as they pull pesticides down from farming operations. Once you pin down the area, check what species are open and refer to the species table for your limits. You also have to read the restrictions for other information such as size restrictions and combined daily limits. It's confusing but I hope that helps! I'm going to make a 101 video I think.

So you just put the oysters on the BBQ without shucking and then when they open you add some butter ? I love this I wonder if the oven would have a similar effect or have you tried it in the oven like that too before?
@PNWSamson
@PNWSamson 2 года назад
I'm sure the oven would work. Possibly even better for that matter. Get the oven nice and hot, throw em in, keep an eye and add some butter once they pop. The oyster Juices poor out and are super hot so get some gloves for handling them. They were amazing. Spring/summer is not the time to eat raw Oysters as Vibrio, a bacteria that grows in seafood, can cause food poisoning. Heating to the appropriate temperature kills that bacteria though!
@Sea2Skyward
@Sea2Skyward 2 года назад
@@PNWSamson Awsome. I usually shuck them before I put them in the oven, I love the fact that I don't really have too. Thanks for the info and great vids. Sea cucumber is on the next seafood menu for me. cheers
@PNWSamson
@PNWSamson 2 года назад
@@Sea2Skyward no worries at all. The sea cucumbers were a huge hit! Actually everyone's favorite. I've been told if the Oyster doesn't pop open then it was dead before cooking and could make you sick if eaten. If you take the shell off before hand you might be cooking a dead one. Hard to say!

I think it's ironic how sun stars were just this nasty predator blob to us and now that they're mostly gone it's an ecological disaster. The complexity of food webs can not be under estimated.
@PNWSamson
@PNWSamson 2 года назад
Agreed man. It's a pretty delicate ecosystem. Humans can't fathom how interconnected everything is. We are just one giant wrench in the gear. And not just in the ocean, around the entire planet.
@petrhermanadventures9509

@@PNWSamson It's true. I like to take the the long view. 10 000 years ago my town would have been covered by several hundred meters of glacier. 10 000 years from now it might be again. That does not mean I don't care, I'm huge on conservation and doing what I can in terms of personal choices to consume less, but also I don't cry myself to sleep at night.
@PNWSamson
@PNWSamson 2 года назад
@@petrhermanadventures9509 true, but your already used to diving in lakes haha. I don't want my ocean to be all (relatively) lifeless and boring. I get that we could be hit by a meteorite and every species known to man, including man, wiped out in a moment's notice but it still sucks. I think I have what they call "climate anxiety." I'm pretty pessimistic and although I don't cry myself to sleep at night, it does keep me up from time to time. Is what it is they say.

Totally man. Makes no sense at all. We ship away farmed salmon to import farmed salmon? Farming salmon in the ocean is bad enough. So dumb. And funny you noticed, definitely cut my feet up! Still a little sore in some areas. I'm used to it though, you should see my hands from cleaning out my Lingcod from yesterday haha.
