Time To Go Spearfishing | Vancouver Island 22
A group of us cruised up the Port Alberni Inlet for a weekend of spearfishing in Bamfield, British Columbia off Vancouver Islands West Coast. We had some epic freediving and speared from Black Rockfish, Blue Rockfish and some Lingcod. We also did a little Lingcod Catch & Cook and made some beer battered fish tacos!

Yes, I caught a Ling cod by hand. I was fishing by hook and line, caught a greenling and when I reached into the water to pick it up a Ling Cod swam up from under the boat and bit my hand, and I pulled it in and killed it. Terrible cuts and scratches.

Great video and footage. The poor baby seal but such is life. That was a small boat for some of those large rollers. Beautiful colours and those caves were cool too.

Love it!! Also, I never get tired of seeing the Island and surrounding depths through your eyes!! I was going to comment that you now know how I feel when I go swimming and diving with having only one full leg (my right was amputated below the knee) but I forgot about your friend in the Caribbean with one leg. It is tiring but I find trying to keep a steady downward dive tricky as I tend to spin when kicking full power, a small price to pay for still being able to dive though! Looking forward to seeing where you dive next!!
@PNWSamson
@PNWSamson 2 года назад
For sure man. Mad respect for you guys. I'd be doing the same thing though! It's especially difficult in our water because we are so buoyant at the surface with our 7mm suits. You guys are definitely an inspiration though. Diving with 1 fin wasn't easy but at least I had my other leg. If you guys can manage I definitely can too!

We do! Not all the time though. It's good in pasta and with eggs. The majority of the time I just crack one open on shore after a dive. They eat lots of kelp so they are loaded with nutrients.

So glad the fin is covered -- *Diving Sports Vancouver* coming through once again I am sure. Cool seeing two similar rockfish but different species schooling looked like that gentlemen had a deacon then a black I often spear them in same areas feet apart ! Makes sense they are such similar species just a few minor differences

Yeah man totally. I had a comment the other day from a RU-vid short. A commercial Fishman who said he's been fishing our waters for 40 years and has never heard of a deacon. He told me I was spearfishing a black rockfish. Haha, you'd think he would know!? I guess they call them all black rockfish.

I love Bamfield! I went some years ago for a school science trip, the road in was a scary drive because it was raining on this long dirt road, with a cliff along one side, at night.... And the bus driver was speeding the whole way! Thankfully we all made it okay, and the marine science center quickly became the coolest place I've ever visited :D The science centre just had its 50th anniversary recently, the educators there are all amazing, especially one woman named Algebra (no, seriously!)
@PNWSamson
@PNWSamson 2 года назад
Haha that's an awesome name. Definitely fitting for a science teacher. That roads sketchy! Not a big fan. I'd take that cold boat ride over that long drive anyway lol. I'll have to visit that science center one day. So much history for such a small little town.

I enjoyed the video. Surprised that you guys didn't fill that cooler. Odd thing a lot of people don't know about spear fishing is that it takes daily practice to get really good. When I was living in mexico and hunting small reef fish every day, it got to the point where I was shooting small, fast moving fish in the head consistently. But it took a couple of months to get to that instinctive aim, I doubt it's possible to get that good just hunting once or twice a week.
@PNWSamson
@PNWSamson 2 года назад
I'm sure it is! I always aim for the head. I went for the longshot on that black rockfish and ended up shooting the one behind it by mistake. My first bycatch! Our fish are pretty easy to shoot for the most part, I average in the high 90% for head shots I believe. I'm sure we could have filled the freezer but we were all being super selective. I figured I'd just freedive most of the time with only one fin and my buddies were primarily looking for Lingcod but would shoot a black rockfish if they saw one big enough. It was a good group, none of us went trigger happy! Happy you liked it!

Nice dive trip for sure! Are the copper rockfish edible? Hope they warranty that fin! I gave up on carbon after seeing failures such as yours. I bought a set of Mako fiberglass fins and have used them now for 3 years, in tough, beach diving conditions, mostly. They are almost indestructable, and are 90% as flexible as carbon. And a LOT less expensive.
@PNWSamson
@PNWSamson 2 года назад
Yeah for sure. I really like my carbons but they do come with some serious disadvantages. More expensive and not as durable. Fiberglass is a great alternative. Those Cetmas are a hybrid. Part carbon and part composite. Luckily they are under warranty and I'll be getting a new blade!
@PNWSamson
@PNWSamson 2 года назад
Oh, and coppers are edible. We were looking for schools of black rockfish though. They get bigger and are a more sustainable option. Both are delicious!

I am looking into getting into freediving in Port Alberni. Can you recommend a group that meets regularly to dive in Port or the surrounding area? (Mike)
@PNWSamson
@PNWSamson 2 года назад
Hmm to be honest I'm not too familiar with the freediving/spearfishing community that way. Are you apart of the local freediving/spearfishing Facebook groups? That would be your best option to reach out.

Newbie question... But what are the rings you all are wearing around your necks?
@PNWSamson
@PNWSamson Год назад
Those would be neck weights! The 7mm suits we wear are extremely buoyant. Having all your weight on a belt can cause a sore back. Neck weights help to keep things a little more evenly distributed.

Have you ever dove entrance Island off Nanaimo?
@PNWSamson
@PNWSamson 2 года назад
Not yet! It's a tricky spot. Open to the Strait so high current and swell. Plus that damn Fraser River ruins the visibility. Trying to time it would be challenging. I'd like to one day, I here it's a good Lingcod spot. But I believe people are fishing it pretty deep with a hook n line.

That's a neck weight made by alchemy. It was good until the lead bar snapped after metal fatigue. For $120 I would not recommend it. A neck weight in general is a great investment though.
