I wonder is sleipner good. I like this knive
@mrdarren1045
@mrdarren1045 Год назад
@@jimlahey5623 sleipner is a great steel. Very similar chemical content as 3v only 3v is powdered and sleipner is a plain ingot steel. But that doesn't bother me one bit. Knives and swords were never made out of powdered steel and they performed well for centuries. Yes powdered steel does produce a finer grained more even structure but i think the advantages of powdered steels (or super steels as they have now become ridiculously called) are over estimated and it has led many ppl into thinking any steel that isn't powdered must be garbage. But that is just a retarded steel snobs view. Sleipner steel will be just fine for almost any purpose you have for it. It takes a great edge and holds it a long time and isn't crazy hard to sharpen, it is super tough, and it has a degree of corrosion resistance. It's a very well balanced steel and one if not my favourite steel. I have knives with s35vn, 154cm, 14c28n, Elmax and 1095. And sleipner is by far my favourite. It's obviously a subjective issue but for me personally I love the steel and can't fault it.

I have the T5 the M4 the T6 and the M7 I got them a month ago. I’m loving them they are so good looking and surprisingly light weight in comparison to my ESEE 5 and my Cold Steel 4 Max Elite with the Titanium both of which I carry everyday. I got the Cold Steel 4 Max Elite because of you guys. My original EDC carry knife is/was a cheap Bladetech designed by Mike Vellekamp put out by 511. Made in China with AUS8 and 1113 steel. I picked it up on a whim but has served me well it’s really dull now but all I really do is open boxes and mail in my everyday life which out of all the knifes I now carry makes it the most useful. I got the 4max to replace it but the blade thickness makes it a poor choice for letter opening. Occasionally I will have some rope or wires to cut and that when I use my 4 max or ESEE 5. My LionSteels are sitting in a drawer for the day I might go 🏕️ camping. However I just love to look at them and know I have some really great tools if I ever decide to use them.

I love the tests you did with that knife and the batoning, and making a fire also. I learned something new there and will try doing it myself. I never learned that while in the Air Force and wish that they had taught us some of those tricks. That is a great knife in my opinion after seeing the tests you put it through. That is a great looking sheath which came with it too and I would love it if it was in my inventory.

I have this knife with G10 and no blade coatings. I have used and abused it for about 7 month and it's never let me down. For me it has the most comfortable grip. It's as tough as they come and I find it holds an edge very well and it's easy to keep sharp. It's an awesome knife. Btw I use my knife mainly on oak, cherry, apple and pear woods. I've also used it in a bushcraft setting3 or 4 times chopping fire wood, cutting wood for shelters and A-frames for sleeping of the ground. It's brilliant.

@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 лет назад
+Magnus Karlsson thanks a lot Magnus. Stainless vs Carbon is a good discussion point but also kinda hard. With modern stainless steels the cons of stainless are becoming less and less in comparison to carbon. I'm personally not seeing any benefits from carbon anymore like how easy it is to sharpen. Or how long the edge will hold. I think we got it partially covered in an upcoming knife talk video.

I've thought about doing that on my military boots as well. I think I heard Dave Canterbury about it some years ago. But I always have paracord with me so I forgot about it. Have you guys ever seen the Cudeman Knives? I am very impressed with their quality and overall attention to detail, some of the nicest looking knives I've seen. They have a Cudeman Bushcrafter and a line of survival type knives with awesome looking Micarta scales and leather sheaths, they can be used scout style and even stripped down to a basic sheath by removing the snap on sharpener case. I can't recall the steel, its made in Italy and they use a certain type of stainless and from what I've seen it hold up to some serious abuse. The handle ergonomics is what attacked me, I got big hands and finding knives that fill my grip is hard to do esp with U.S knives as of late.

What do you think guys!? This M5 or M4 for general outdoor/camp use to light survival applications? I'm a big fan of m390 but it's harder to sharpen in the field, and I like the size and ergos of the m5. Just curious which you think is better all around. Rock on!
@f22shift
@f22shift 7 лет назад
Nice vid. Lots of good info. I went with the m3 for more chopping power and so far the niolox has been great. I'll probably get a m7 as the matching pair for even more chopping power. Regarding the handle, lionsteel is definitely comfortable. If I have to complain because of the texture design you will get some abrasion if you do a 2-3 finger choking down when chopping. The texture will rub compared to a polished micarta handle. Looking forward to more vids. I would like to see a m7 testing in the future. Also the casstrom brand. They seem great values too. In the Dakota fire, how is it better than just to have a fire in one sunken hole as opposed to two holes and a tunnel. I mean one larger hole and the fire on one side.
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 лет назад
Hey, you might be seeing casstrom in 2017 on our channel. I've been looking at them for a while now. The m7 might come also eventually but I first need a niolox as well! The second hole can be used to blow in without melting your face and you can even use it to feed twigs to the fire. Later in the evening we made a roof over the fire and made a third hole. We had a fire completely submerged into the ground which was pretty awesome. Sadly it was to dark to film. I also guess the hole from the side makes a more efficient way of sucking in oxigen. The air in the side hole is cool so the air doesn't rise because of the heat creating a suction to the fire. It's a bit like a fire stove that has holes in the side to suck in oxigen. I also have to say that you could make way better dakota fire pits than I did here. I've seen people make them in a more clay-ish ground that looked so darn satisfying.

Hey!

I'm debating between this knife in the uncoated/ wood model, or an EnZo Trapper N690 with micarta handles. Any recommendation, primarily regarding the steel would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Great video again guys. I was hoping that you could recommend a knife for me between the M5 and the T5? It's not necessarily going to be used as a dedicated bushcraft knife- just general purpose cutting rope, cardboard etc. Which is more ergonomic and which of the steels do you prefer between sleipner/nilox? Cheers DBK! Jim

Sleipner is definitely the better steel. I also prefer the knife without swedge. The t5 is more tactical version of the M5 making it less suitable for outdoor tasks

Very awesome video friends. Nice knife too. Besides ease of sharpening how do you like the sleipner steel vs the m390 in the m4? Thanks again for the post
@DutchBushcraftKnives

As a sucker for edge retentions I would opt for m390 if I could. The sleipner did really surprise me with how easy it was to sharpen even at 61 HRC. it's a great and well balanced steel. I think sleipner would be the better steel for larger blades. M390 is still on the nomination lists for becoming my favourite steel though.

I had one in santos wood, but I sold it. The handle seemed not round enough and thick enough. But i am thinking about buying the new one, after this video :D. Nice!

haha thanks mate. knife handles are like shoes. it might be comfortable for one but not good for the other.

That´s right! You have both M4 and M5 right? Could you please let me know, if the handle of M4 are thicker than M5 handle? Or does it feels thicker/rounder? Thank you very much
@PhreakDarkSoul
@PhreakDarkSoul 7 лет назад
The maximum thickness of the M4 handle is only ~1 mm less (2.1 mm vs 2.2 mm), compared to the M5. But it is a little bit shorter (approx. 5mm; only the space between preformed G10 finger trays; 108 mm vs 11.9 mm total G10 length). The height is also about 10 mm less (22 mm vs 33 mm). Short conclusion: M4 fits perfect in hands with glove size 9.5. M5 up to 10 without problems.

Thanks a lot! So it should feel more ´rounder´ in the hand than M5. I think i should give it a try

Is sleipner easier to sharpen than VG 10, ELMAX or 3 V? Which is better for sharpness? I was really interested in Lion Steel from your videos. I always use S1, ESEE 5 and 5050 properly. If you have only three knives, will you choose Lion Steel as one of them?
