More impressive than any black athletes' achievements for sure.

It talked about how slowly and incrementally the long jump record changed, by inches at a time, and then Beamon broke it by almost two feet. They said he took off in 1968 and landed in the 21st Century. For some reason, those words and that imagery have stayed with me all these years.

I saw an analysis once that said that Beamon was able to achieve his jump because he took off at an almost 45° angle. Most long jumpers take off a lot shallower, and aren’t able to maximize their jumps.

Totally agree... And I watched it live, when I was on the track team in college. It was amazing then and it still looks amazing now. I remember him collapsing after finding out the distance.

Not to mention his "walk" back after the jump. Legendary. Almost better than the jump itself.

He put on running exhibitions to raise enough to get him a steamer ride to New Orleans, where he gambled away all his money. He had 677 miles to go. So he RAN it (mostly), arriving in street clothes at the stadium about an hour before the race. They cut his pants down to shorts. Then he began to run the marathon...and came in 4th. Every female WR set in the 1980's by Eastern Bloc athletes was drug assisted. Every Eastern Bloc country had a state supported drug program for it's top athletes. It's no secret anymore. There is lots of testimony and evidence from people who were in involved as coaches, athletes and administrators. None of those performances should even count as world records. If we did count them all then her HJ record would deserve some mention although someone has jumped within 1 cm of it so it's not as dominant as some of the other long standing records.

sights are...well manipulated by over response to a virus. I think athletes would probably have been ok to compete with their health being so strong, but it would have to been done without the fans. So really they canceled the Olympics mainly due to not being able to make money off the fans. A lot of athletes were ready to compete and were denied.

I don't know much about jumps but 47.60 is INSANE. World Champs or Olympics are generally won with a 49, sometimes a low 50 is enough. 48s are SUPER rare, as an example there was a gap from 2010 to 2017 where not a single 48 second time was run (between Sanya Richards-Ross' 48.83 in Brussels 2009 to Shaunae Miller-Uibo's 48.97 in 2018). These are high 48s, a high 48 is sometimes once in a decade, there are only 6 athletes under 48.50 ever and Marita is 47 MID, like wtf?!

Her trainer (Bob Kersee) has been involved in many accusations of doping (the most significant one Gwen Torrance who accused him to make fraud with Gail Deevers and Irina Privalova.

Both of these times were from 1987. Going back further, her performances had garnered a silver medal in 200 meters in the 1984 Games, but her times were not remarkable. In the 100 meters, her best time before 1987 is now the 704th best time ever. Suddenly she made an incredible progress. Training? Drugs? Again, I do not believe in miracles
