The Unholy Trinity: Volatility, Illiquidity, and Insolvency (w/Micael Green & Christopher Cole)

Chris Cole, founder and CIO of Artemis Capital Management, sits down with Michael Green to discuss why he views volatility as the ultimate expression of illiquidity and insolvency. Together, they explore how the Fed’s actions in 2020 swiftly stomped out both of these risks, explain how structural dynamics resulted in rapid equity price appreciation over the last year, and take a closer look at volatility and the options market and what Cole describes as a "bull market in fear". They also touch on credit markets and why Cole argues that the Fed’s dilemma is a choice between corporate solvency and pension solvency, the regulatory game theory for Bitcoin, and Artemis’s soon-to-be real "Dragon Portfolio". Filmed on March 26, 2021. Key Learnings: Cole does not see a speedy return to pre-COVID levels of volatility but caveats that elevated VIX levels are more the result of fear and expectations of volatility rather than realized vol. He also argues that policy makers will have to choose between pension solvency and corporate solvency, and in an increasingly populist political environment, choosing corporate solvency will be an extremely difficult decision.

One of my predictions of 2020 was that they would have to rewrite the dictionary and remove “bankruptcy” and “insolvency”. At this point they might as well just replace calling it a “loan” with calling it a handout…..

it's far too easy for investors to lose perspective. whenever something big goes wrong, a lot of people panic and hold on to money that should be working for them. Looking at history, the markets recovered from corona virus, 2008 crisis, the dotcom crash, even the Great Depression. The market all bounces back, and now is the best time to load up on ones fave picks.

I love Mike’s insight but “against the interest of the US” is not the same as “against the interests of the US government.” I think Triffins Dilema for example is a case of supporting the interests of the government at the cost of interests of the citizens. So I think you can say “I think US reserve currency status no longer helps the citizens since the need to be a net exporter to supply the world with dollars hollows out much US production (and jobs) as a cost.” So while I don’t think there are “solutions”, only “alternatives” (Sowell) I think it is important not to label supporting bad ideas as “patriotic” and not supporting repressive practices like opaque inflation taxes as “unpatriotic”.

The State has jumped the shark as far as moral hazard is concerned...there is no moral authority for The State right now...trying to defend it or the status quo in any way at this point is ridiculous. The State needs to clean up its own house...stop with the hubristic control and all the needless complexity...and let things fail. Bring back respect for moral hazard and the moral authority of The State will return.

ETFs are responsible for "zombie" companies, inefficient companies that should have gone bankrupt but managed to stay afloat because the index ETFs automatically keep buying their shares. 43:30 can someone explain to me why raising interest rates would be inflationary?
@James-vj5hz
@James-vj5hz 3 года назад
He was specifically talking about the need for fiscal spending because of corporate collapse in a higher interest rate economy. The fed would need to support additional unemployment spending through debt. The alternative would be a low interest rate environment at the expense of fixed income (pensions). My understanding is that he's arguing for higher inflation regardless of the fiscal and monetary outcomes.

I like the theory that crypto is where money can slosh around speculating until it is ready to re-enter traditional investment assets. Maybe the FED should say "cryptocurrency is interesting and innovative, and a net positive to society." Then they can signal more people to jump in and absorb inflation.
