The Unintended Consequences Of the Facebook Like Button - The Lightbulb Moment

In 2007, a group of Facebook engineers introduced “the awesome button” to their boss, Mark Zuckerberg. Although he didn’t agree with it at the time, the awesome button, later dubbed the like button, would soon become integral to Facebook’s business model. But the consequences of this seemingly simple widget stretched beyond Facebook, changing the way we perceive ourselves and forever altering our political landscape.
This is The Lightbulb Moment. A Cheddar and CuriosityStream Original Series. The show that uncovers the surprising impact of less-celebrated inventions and the moments of inspiration that made them possible.
Watch 13 minute versions here on Cheddar's RU-vid page. You can also watch the full 22 minute episodes on CuriosityStream and on Cheddar's live network Wednesdays, at 8 p.m.

Reddit did it earlier (2005) and PerlMonks before them (going back to the year 2000). Upvote (or upmod) is basically the equivalent of likes regarding how it functions. Facebook didn't invent the concept, they just made it mainstream.
@lnplum

You're right that the video does overstate the innovation aspect but Facebook was different in that businesses would embed their like button on their websites. It took them from a dominant position to the absolute market leader and allowed for a massive invasion of privacy at scale that lies at the heart of the company today. It was pivotal for Facebook as a business.

Americans are famous for skipping T sounds. Learned that, by meeting Europeans, being complemented for properly saying a sound from a non-native speaker was a nice complement. Though I also invite people to correct me and use resources to verify basically everything. Sadly during the video it went from reminding me of children making a mistake to me feeling the need to teach her like one of my kids if they refused to grasp a simple tongue movement and exhale technique.

Exactly! I kept wondering, "Why is she calling it a 'buh-un'???"
@minsub417
@minsub417 3 года назад
@drosera oh I’m aware-I’m just not sure she does. Glottal stops are increasingly more common in a few American dialects, but are perceived as especially grating to those who don’t use glottal stops. I just wonder if the host is aware that she uses glottal stops where middle-position /t/ is typically pronounced, because it is easily alterable and avoids people talking a ton about it.
@minsub417
@minsub417 3 года назад
@drosera I’m not degrading her speech-but it is something that is very noticeable and it does distract a lot of viewers. Being snarky isn’t really the answer either. I’m originally from the south, but have lived in Michigan for the past four years, where glottal stops in middle-position /t/ is semi-common and it threw me off a lot. What I found though was a lot of people were just not aware they were doing it, just like I wasn’t aware that pen and pin were pronounced differently in other places. So there’s no need to change obviously, but when you extend to a broader market, it is a choice-whether to just stay you, even if it is something others aren’t aware of, or just adapting a “standard” pronunciation to avoid it being distracting. As I’m sure you’re aware, there are some speech traits that are far more scrutinized than others. Adapting speech to cater to your audience is common-it’s why newscasters is Alabama can sound like newscasters in Washington. I think glottal stops are distracting for some viewers because the rest of the host’s speech is more in line with what a lot of people consider “standard American”-which we both know doesn’t exist, but whatever. It’s kind of the same as if she was talking about recycling in her accent but kept saying “aluminium” throughout. It’s correct, but it’s unexpected. John Oliver actually did the opposite in his most recent video and plenty of people were like “why did he do that?”

I NEVER "like" anything. Here's why. People constantly post stuff that is questionable and even insane. It gets thousands of "likes" though, not because it's true, but because it tells people what they want to hear (the Tucker Carlson paradox). The frothy positive comments on the post then all get "likes" by same mindless herd mentality and move to the top of the feed. Any contrarian comments--or anything that might actually be true--mostly just get ignored entirely. So you get instant self-perpetuating consensus on complete--and essentially unchallenged--bullsh*t. So it's an echo chamber. It's basically self-perpetrating propaganda, which is the worst kind of propaganda there is.

Goes on to show that SO MUCH happens behind the scenes. I actually respect him now for not tryna go along with it. 2. What is Director of Influencer Pedagogy? LOL 3. It's even obnoxious on RU-vid. People assumes their entire life's worth can be boiled down to and summed up in a numerical metric. Forget cocaine, people would s... d.... for likes here on RU-vid. Some of the beggings I have seen... But on FB (eventhough I no longer have account) the situation is more playful. Esp. the ha-ha emoji. You straight up feel like comedian even if you get a single ha-ha. But just with humanity, people use the ha-ha emoji to exhibit smarmy, snarky, condescending spiteful behavior where they rub it in making it a point they are laughing AT you and not with you. Demise and demise of society.

Meanwhile you have Kyriakos Mitsotakis (Greek prime minister) paying Asians and Africans to "like" his Facebook page. 😂😂

Hey narrator: The word button has the T sound in the middle. Not an H. It's "T." Not "H."

What I don't understand is people on YT requesting likes in the comments section. What do they gain by getting likes on the content that's not theirs? It blows my mind.

why not delete the like button? or at least add a dislike button if the content has actual content like video's and articles. picture should not have them (like Facebook). although for a photographer based site it can be interesting for general feedback. Something should never be a tool for self reflection. only you can judge yourself.

Why does the narrator talk so slow? I have to watch the video at a higher speed just to make it watchable.

Why not use "like" interactions for ranking and driving sharing but stop publicizing the numbers to reduce the ability for users to compare themselves to others
