What drives me crazy is that so many business think it's ok to only have a facebook page. When you try to get their hours or something you're constantly spammed to log in, you can't message them, it's a pain.

Before social media, when your bestfriend had big life events, they would call you and you were the first to know. Then social media came around and they are more likely to tell it on Facebook then you. They don't even bother calling you anymore. You are just expected to read it on Facebook. It doesn't make you feel that close to those people at all. Kind of makes you feel not important. I feel like Facebook has became a way for people to be lazy at building long term relationships with other people. It is probably one of many reasons why we feel disconnected, lonely and depressed.

Ain't nobody gonna remember that many people, after a couple years you may remember like 30 or so of those friends, but you still put the effort in to 100 or 200, of wich 170 won't be there for you at all or ever be able to remember you. I think Facebook will die over time. I'm 15 and none of my friends actively use facebook, and only a few have it at all. It's become an "old" people thing to us

I never use the actual facebook app/website anymore but I still use messenger primarily because it's cross-platform. It's become such an annoying crutch. None of my friends use twitter (which I do), I don't have an iPhone, not enough of my friends use whatsapp or any other group chat service so I'm pretty much forced to use FB messenger. Also in college people only invite you to events and add you to groups through facebook so you pretty much need to have it.

I quit Facebook after a strong depression, believe me it has been a year since I no longer use Facebook and I feel great. Also my relationships are stronger with the people I care for and I don't feel like going back to it.

Same, but actually multiple reasons that made me delete mine, been 1+ years... 1st being insufficient seeing other's glamourful life, then Facebook data leak n privacy. also when I was on fb, I used to upload funny pics and secretely steal n use their accounts to make some jokes... But then I realise how vulnerable it is that it could happen to me also.

Lost touch with several friends and family due to not having social media after 3 years,..I can say I’m a lot happier and it makes seeing people I haven’t seen or talked to in awhile that much more special.
The problem is Facebook also had a lot of data about people who dón't have Facebook. A lót of sites use Facebook-services to easily analyse the people who visit their site. The problem is: Facebook collects all that data as well. That's why Facebook knows so much: not only because of what you do on Facebook, but also because of what you do on a lot of other sites.
I got off Facebook and Instagram months ago. I'm still the same, unproductive shmuck ive always been. I even feel like I'm missing out on things at time. RU-vid has taken up my Instagram and Facebook time. At least I'm learning things I guess. But even though I feel like I'm missing out, I don't MISS social media. I guess psychologically I feel like I'm better than everyone on Facebook and Instagram because I'm no longer subjected to all the Orwellian bullshit these companies love to pull on the users.
Those "anonymous people" are generally people who think it's normal to just request random people on Facebook. In my case I get a lot of requests from random hackers who either want to ask me questions, or try to hack me.

I quit using it a year ago but finally deleted the account a week and a half ago. I let everyone that I was “friends” with know to message me to keep in touch. Not surprised a little more than 4 people replied. Best. Decision. Ever! Focused on more of myself than what others are doing! #QuitFacebook
I dislike how this video is basically acting like people have no choice but to keep using Facebook. I quit a year ago and it hasn’t affected my life negatively in anyway. AND I live hundreds of miles away from my nearest family. Don’t be afraid to at least try a hiatus from social media. It feels great.
I took a hiatus from social media (except for RU-vid) and honestly I feel so much better. I have a lot more free time and now I have been paying more attention to my sleep schedule. Now I’m not checking Instagram and stuff before I go to bed and scrolling for hours on it lol. It was a problem for me. You don’t really realize how hooked you are to social media until you take a break from it.
May I ask you what other ways you are using to stay in touch with your folks? I am in a similar position where I want to delete FB but have no other way to stay in touch with certain people who heavily rely on it.
I quit for a year by this point. I realized that IDGAF about other people's life anyway, I don't miss anything. Other people's life is their own business. I made my thinking into one where the only thing that matters is me and my own life.
Do not use *real personal data on FB.* Problem solved ! Even if FB does not abuse your personal data, then other companies and people still collect it in an automatic way. Right to privacy is the right to use fake data in personal communication with family and friends. Real friends, work contacts, and family do already know you, no need to use personal data on all social profiles.

What's the point of FB friends? It's all superficial bullshit. If they are really your friends they can just as easily invite you a different way. Haven't used FB since 2012 and never got that into it either, haven't had any problems with it, still keep contact with the friends i care about

I have this amazing idea for the next big social media platform. I call it IRL. Instead of posts there are Convos. using my advanced techniques you can push air through the cords in your throat and, using adjustable mouth muscles, you can send a text message as audio. This occurs due to an advanced text-to-speech processor located in the left frontal lobe. The other person uses a set of highly sensitive receivers located on the sides of their head that can measure the compression of air. This info is collected and is interpreted as sound and the process can be repeated several times in a Convo. Now, there is a bit of a learning curve. Generally, you have to practice for a couple years in order to get the basics.
The only reason I’m on fb is for the messenger app, I go on fb like 3 times a year for a few minutes. I suppose instagram is owned by fb too tho so its the same difference 🙄

I used facebook for all of 5 minutes when my ex of 5 years dumped me. I was trying to figure out what had happened because she was an avid facebook user. I was not able to stomach what I saw on facebook. The plastic exterior and shallow nature of commentary pretty much demonstrated the limits of the platform. It's a free for all. Which at the speed of a billion and one people's nasty feelings a second, is nuclear to individuality. Plus I didn't want to fall into the trope of stalking her on facebook with her "new" boyfriend🤢. The usefulness of facebook is cancelled out but what it takes away from our humanity. We don't have to see first hand the consequences of our words. We don't have to have the courage to say things to peoples faces. We are actually more disconnected then ever before. I don't use facebook because it takes more than it gives from people. Same problem we had with my space.

People bring their cultural baggage with them instead of seeing the net as an opportunity to find something more genuine. Anonymity can be a powerful thing if used right. And yea, if you want to learn about the world and what's going on, there is no better place for collecting information and ideas. Classical news outlets are frankly just bad most of the time(there are moments though). They are hampered by conventional thinking and political correctness. Online you can see all the arguments, and understand why people might feel the way they do. That's important if you want something that's more than black and white.
I deleted my Facebook a month ago and I have felt so amazing ever since. I found myself comparing my life to others and it started to make me feel terrible about myself. Since I deleted it I’ve been able to focus on myself and my own goals without feeling insignificant to others accomplishments. Sometimes I kind of feel “out of the loop” but it’s okay. For right now this is what’s best for me.

After concluding that I had clinical depression, I deactivated my FB account and removed the icon from my phone. Three months later I have no itch to reactivate it.

It may be inescapable for millennials, but not for Gen z. We stopped using Facebook since we were children and they destroyed Facebook gaming with ridiculous fb coins. Many of my peers never got FB accounts because it fell out of style before they were ever allowed to start using social media, and those that do, don't use Facebook as anything but an addressbook. I only use it as a an automatic log-in thing for other websites like Spotify, pinterest, and instagram. But I could've used my Gmail for that instead. I'm soon deleting Facebook.

Stopped using Facebook 2 yrs ago and yes I'm happier and yes my friends and family think I'm being dramatic. I've missed out on several significant life events such as illnesses, births, deaths, graduations and so on because people posted and act like I should have known. Ditching Facebook can be very isolating in some ways but I'd rather pay for a service and keep my privacy than be the product and use it for free.
Mike Salt Facebook can also be very bad for deaths though. When my grandmother died, my inconsiderate cousin immediately posted about it on Facebook before we had time to make the phone calls. We got a lot of people calling us, crying, that they had seen my grandma's death announcement on Facebook and no one had called them. They were upset by how impersonal it was and I don't blame them for feeling that way.

Just so you know, people are very misleading when they talk about facebook. You can adjust your privacy settings so nothing is visible publicly besides your profile picture (which you can set to blank, though I see you are using one on google so I guess it's not a big deal for you), and your name. When people say "you are the product" they don't mean that your data is being sold, they mean that advertisers can filter ads. Perhaps if someone in your city is selling piano lessons, they can restrict their ad to your city. Your data is not given to advertisers, it's as much of a 'breach of privacy' as pasting a billboard. To avoid things like cambridge analytica do not use third party aps. The data that they collected is blown way out of proportion, 87 million and the VAST majority (about 99.8%) had only their public data "stolen". To clarify, your public data is things you set as public, which is your name, profile pic, and anything you set as public which could be likes, birthday, and current city. The same data that anyone could see by looking at your profile.
So glad I left Facebook. Too many Karens spreading misinformation and also letting strangers find you and track you down, despite you not knowing them.
Just don't scroll through the feed or anything. Just have a profile so that people can find you and message you and such. Facebook only has as much information on you as you give them. Stop scrolling and you'll suffer no ill effects.
Ravyn Perez here in Brazil, the only way to communicate with people is using WhatsApp. It's light, fast, and really easy to be used by older people, differently of in-built messengers, and Facebook Messenger itself. I'll lost more than half of my communication capacity with people if I delete WhatsApp. I can't just ask them to send an SMS or to call, because they won't. I think I'm doomed (along with everyone else). At least, I'm aware of this matter.
university is overrated. To be a teacher these days you need either a 4 or 6 year degree. You dont know how many people have a 4 or 6 year degree cant follow a picture book to open a paper tray to load paper in a printer. or how to plug in a USB cable. Or cant connect to wifi. And then call me to figure it out. BTW I dont use facebook. And they do. Coincidence?
I hate Facebook, but I have so many family members in contact and so many memories stored on there that quitting would mean losing access to all of that, and so I reluctantly keep using it every year.

3 and a half ish months into my “Year Without Facebook.” It’s pretty tough ngl. About as bad as quitting cigarettes really. I have the urge to check it constantly. But I’m definitely way less angry and way less stressed since I’ve stopped checking in regularly. Hoping that I can get even better about not looking at it as the year progresses.
The only people that I know of that use Gab and Minds are people who are online regularly and are into the alternative-media sphere. It doesn't have a market with "normies".
