That he's real, not some fake trumped up fictitious wanna be who needs ratings . You have no idea how many people I've had to shrug off as idiots because they believe shit discovery channel shoves down their throat. Too bad Les doesn't do much of the show anymore,or at least if he is,it's not being broadcast much on easily accessible T.V. at all. I learned some things from him, most I knew because I did something most people never do about anything, researched it,and read. Fundamentals of life, deduction ability, and reading .
Tj What's even crazier about that is that he'd still set up the cameras for artistic-looking shots of him walking or what have you, then he'd have to go back and get the camera lol
When he basically made himself a feast in the outback and looked like he was having the most relaxing time. So good at what he does he made it look easy.
One other thing I like about Les is he openly says on his site he often coordinates with locals and studies the area before going into the wilderness nearby, and at times local SAR teams have followed him for their own training, and as an emergency back-up. This isn't "cheating", this is smart, honest survival thinking.
Not just that but it would be pretty dickish to have to have a real search and rescue effort launched to rescue a guy filming a survival show. I haven't caught his new stuff, but I fully understand why the old survivorman was ended. You could just tell it was beating the heck out of him. Heck one of the most honest moments on the show was I think season one on the crashed bush plane when he openly gave up on 'one arming' it because he was worried he'd blow out his 'good' shoulder and it was just too hard. The moment that most emphasized how getting hurt doing something rash in survival would cost you more then any possible gain.
He did say the tv show shows only 45 mins. But dont forget it is 7 days. it wont be the same watching 45 mins while actually surviving 7 days. Watch QC episode of Les stroud breaking down survival movies/scenes, its a good watch.
The thing I always found most impressive about Stroud is that he filmed all that stuff on his own. He'd try and get shots of him walking away from a location. That means he has to walk back, get the camera, and do it again. I'm sure having to create interesting shots doesn't make survival situations any easier.
Arkalius80 yeah he actually says something about it in an episode. I dont remember which one, but he films himself walking what looks like a mile in the desert and he had to come back and get the camera lol
Arkalius80 , exactly, he showed one time just that very thing while filming one time. he is truly alone by him self. that alone separates him from everyone else ever !!! if people
He still goes out and does the actual video recording by himself and does the show by himself. No crew around. I wouldn't be surprised if some of those spots we not too far from a road. Doesn't take away from what he's teaching.
LinkinVerbz44 You are wrong, better go back and watch more of dual survival, because he sure did and made the comment of it being sterile which is wrong also.
I'm so glad you guys are giving this dude some much-earned publicity. Les is the real deal. A little known fact also might be that he co-wrote and performed the all music on the show. The AHHHHH-YEEE-AAAAH-AAAA vocal in the opening credits? Yeah, that's Les too.
This guy's legit, his show was phenomenal, this man not only had to survive, he had to set up his own camera shots, set the camera rig up, only to walk back to pick it up again, and haul all his own gear. I loved watching his show.
Canada IS american..... almost half the world is "american".... most the western hemisphere is " The AMERICAS"....north america, central america, south america........
PARADOXICLES well...now I'm confused. .other day some guy screams, ''stupid American'', as I stand bewildered next to a Canadian, Mexican, Venezuelan, and Brazilian. .gonna keep me up tonight wondering which one of my friends that fucker insulted now. .
thats what happens when people interchange a specific nationality, with non specific geography ........ but i woudlnt worry about it,neither one matters....... were all human, and even that dosnt matter much.
I was just being a smartass, nothing personal.. Here in the U.S., the term ''American'' has historical roots, where it was used to differentiate the colonies from the English. We'll continue to bastardize plenty of new words as we bash into each other on this meatball. Not always a need for 'technical analysis', but each to their own... My Pangaen brotha...😁
You wish you were me, evidently not, if you read the stuff above your post here, a lot of people are either misinformed or easily buffaloed about B Gylis or don't know anything about Survivor man .
When I was 15 and Les was a guide for BlackFeather, my father, brother and me went white water canoeing with him down the Petawawa. He knows his stuff.
Les Stroud is a hero to many, myself included. I NEVER go into the woods without one of his books. His books contain valuable and lifesaving info and can help fight boredom. Thanks for keeping it real (and Canadian) Les. 👍👍👍
when survivorman ended its run on discovery channel everything started to fall apart. the mindless imitators devolved to the point where it was almost like pitching a sitcom. "hey, what about a show where we put a hippie and an army dude together?" "what about one where it's a husband and wife and she's all naggy?" "what if they were naked?" "what if they were naked AND it's a gameshow?"
@@Badusername2000 Dual Survival has also been proven to be fake as shit. It was used in court as evidence. Not to mention Joe is severely guilty of Stolen Valor.
"Everyone's always talking about man vs nature but, there is no man vs nature. Nature is not out to get you or help you, it just is. Its indifferent" -Les Stroud said something like this on one of his shows and I think he was low-key roasting Bear Grilles .
Les is very humble. When he describes different techniques, he still makes it seem like it isn't the best at what he does, just well rounded overall at survival. In regards to the average person, hes obviously very skilled.
Les is the real deal. I've been into camping and wilderness survival for years. He's spot on about Bear. I can't count the number of times I've watch that show with my son and told him, Don't ever do that in a survival situation. Bear's dramatic advice would get you killed.
ShishkaBerry No he doesn't. Unlike you Bear Grylls is a accomplished ex military soldier. Youngest British man to scale Everest. Join the foreign legion . Help thousands of children . and has a beautiful life and family. You are hating on him on RU-vid... bums always hate on people who do better than them. Bear doesn't even care about this guy.
Les is far more practical and sensible in his teachings and style if you follow his style you will survive. Gryll's style is suitable if you are Grylls some of the feats he does are downright dangerous in their teachings for the average man if you are a contestant on Ninja Warrior or some free runner you might attempt some of his antics but I for one am going to play it safe out in the wild where even a sprang ankle can kill you.
Had the pleasure of meeting him at a concert. Fabulous musician. Check out his song "Arctic Mistress". Seriously powerful. We had a small crowd in Idaho and he still performed like it was a sold-out venue. Very humble, indulged us with stories, answered our questions, and happily took pictures and signed autographs. Go to the show if he's ever playing near you!!!
I like Les Stroud. I get the impression he's genuine. I feel like he's going to do well at something, or he's not, but either way he's not going to blow smoke about it.
Les Stroud is my favorite source for information. He went out alone and did his camera work, no camera crew. No grandstanding for ratings, just how it need be done. You're out there alone and the least little injury can leave you to die. Reminds me of a quote by an American solider in WWII seeing Sherman tanks taking a Japanese held island. He called them timid creatures. While they outclassed all the Japanese tanks satchel charge or motor shell on their thin roofs could kill them. A person out alone with no way to call for help has to be a timid creature.
It's an interesting channel, but it's not the same as Survivorman. Those videos on primitive techniques take days or weeks to produce. I still agree that it's interesting.
triston murray I love his channel but he's not technically survival. Primitive technology and survival techniques do overlap in some areas but their essential essence is different. primitive technology is about early methods of building civilization, while survival is purely just about staying alive.
So he's fake because he hasnt mentioned different types of wood? Say that out loud with a serious face... 20 years ago i taught basic survival skills, and i agree 100 percent, les knows his stuff... spending a week with les, using survival skills in some remote location is high on my bucket list...
My favorite thing? @4:13, the look on Stroud's face. That's an expression we've never seen before, because it's a face reserved for our loved ones. You can see the love and forbearance he has for his son. I've seen it on the faces of other fathers and I've probably worn the same one, my being a dad of 2 lads and a lassie.
ChunkySeaCow bear washed out, he didn't even actually make it. Like those guys who claim they were SEALs but never made it off green team. What a joke.
CavemanJoe I didn't think that was ever confirmed or denied. He's like one of those Dan Bilzerian types then if that's the case. I heard even if he wasn't in the SAS first team he was definitely in the reserves for them. Regardless that's still enough training for any person.
ChunkySeaCow Potentially, yes, but the differences can be astounding. For example, in the Marines, there were people who sucked at land navigation, but were great shooters. There were people who could recite the survival book word-for-word, but couldn't tell a dandelion from a plantain. Bear just comes across that way, and skips over a lot of things in his video. Not because of ratings, but because *he doesn't know them*. He's more engineering/demo than actual survival skills, and that's why I have little, if any, respect for him when it comes to his show and survival knowledge.
It's funny how you mention how he offers up his failures as well because that was one of the most compelling aspects of the show but also that it kept me engaged and interested
I will never get tired of watching or listening to Les Stroud. Since the 1st time I watched one episode of Survivorman, any time he shows up on a show or a new episode of anything he does comes around, I need to watch it. The best of the best in my opinion.
Not to dis Primitive Technology in any way, but as far as it goes I think Survivorman goes much further into teaching one how to survive in multiple environments, whereas PT is purely showing what you could do in the more temperate parts of Australia. I love them both, but in terms of educational value I think Survivorman is a lot more informative albeit a bit boring at times. Either way, any serious survival series should be praised in my opinion, as long as they teach/show useful techniques, I'm all for it. I really like the surge of survival channels that have appeared on RU-vid in the last few years especially due to not owning cable, it's great to see so many people teaching about surviving in the wild because everyone might face that situation sooner or later.
When I first seen the tag I totally thought looper was going to trash talk Survivorman haha. I'm glad that they didn't because I know what it takes to survive in the wilderness of northern Canada (it sucks, especially in the winter) and you learn great tips and tricks from Les Stroud.
Duran Bruno , my hats off to you my friend, northern Canada is no damn joke. one of the most difficult places to survive in the world. Get one single decision wrong and it's game over. God bless you
Less Stroud is the Man. Survivorman is one of my favorite shows. He's Canadian and grew up about an hour from where I live. I would love to meet him one day
I think the thing that made survivorman so interesting is how it was first person, real life and death situations! The fact that not only was he trying to survive in a hostile environment he ALSO was trying to film the whole ordeal and show the reality that survival is not easy but you can do it!
Stroud is a Canadian outdoorsman. Perhaps the only other nationality to be able to produce such a diverse survivalist is Russia. From the Desert to -40 Winters, Stroud can do it. I will give Bear credit though, he seems to kill more meat.
Gilbert McGillicutty Sure the Russians have the climate. However the Canadians taught the Russians how to move oil rigs in days instead of weeks. They never used drop pins before, they welded the entire rig, they would spend weeks grinding the welds to dismantle the rig.
He's definitely the real deal. In one of his episodes he discusses how ridiculous and absurd it is that other 'survival people' will risk breaking a leg, an arm etc. & he said if you're truly in survival mode you're done for if you break a limb so you never take those risks... Just one example among many. Good show.
Les Stroud was the godfather of youtubers. The guy is multi talented, an amazing musician, and shot, and produced his own survival show in the first person with no crew. The guy is the OG youtuber in my opinion. Friggin best!
I like that his stuff works for real. We’ve a few people over the years up here in the frozen north that directly attribute their survival when they were lost or stranded to Les’s survival techniques and teachings. I’ve seen everything he’s ever put on tv and I have tried to memorize them all as I tent in the mountains every summer and you just ever know when things could happen. Thanks for the great vid and thanks Les for all you have taught me!
13 members of Bear Grylls family have watched this video. We've always known that Les was the one doing a more realistic show. But let's be honest here. Bear is no slouch. Not only is he an accomplished military man, but he is also extremely intelligent and a great survivalist.
yah sure Bear is fun to watch but his survival skills are suicidally stupid. Ever see any of his specials? how he talks about all the times he made himself so sick eating crap he shouldn't? how he was med-vacced? or had diarrhea so bad he was crapping all over his camera man during a rock climb? or how about when he jumped into water during winter then did naked jumping jacks....my wife personally liked that one i dunno why lol. what about the time he advocated entering a melting ice cave on a glacier? SOO...EH....SIDAL.
He broke his back once. Not sure if that's why he left the SAS, but I'm sure it didn't help' I have no doubt that Bear could survive out there, with his sepcial ops background (he summited Everest, after all) but the show seems more like a stunt than a lesson in outdoor survival. He does stuff that would get lesser people killed, and as a result is not a show to watch to learn real survival. I liked Survivorman better.
@Warstar Hmm, all bald assertions and not a lick of actual independently verified data. Bizarre. It's almost as if you don't care, at all, whether or not your beliefs comport with reality. I'm not claiming you're wrong, just that your beliefs, this far, are functionally indistinguishable from delusions. Agreed?
While Les shows you how to survive, Bear pulls some really dangerous stunts that could get you hurt or killed nothing like being maimed while out in the wilderness.
He always was my favorite. It blows me away how many people didn't watch him but paid watch man vs wild. I watched both but Man vs wild was just a show me and my dad made fun of. It had no sense of realism, danger, and having a camera crew with him at all times just bummed me out when we has Survivorman as a better option.
this guy's for real .refreshingly real. i think, occasionally ,they might exaggerate threats of bad weather on the way, and little stuff , but he can live outdoors .he could save a life if need be. let's hope it never comes to that.
He should be called Endurance Man, he lives in the wild for a week and his traps never work he goes the entire week only eating 3 snails and a berry - he doesn't survive and thrive he simply endures starvation for a week!
I completely agree about being Endurance Man, and I'm sure he would too. That said, he's often successful with food. He's caught a snowshoe hare, a ground squirrel, a turtle, and crayfish in his traps. Outside of traps, he's caught some big arctic char, some trout, a snake, a booby-bird, etc. He's very good with knowing what plants and mushrooms are safe and edible. There are also times when he's not had as much luck, like you stated. That's just the reality of being in the wild. Considering what he has, he does a phenomenal job, and is a top notch survivalist.
To survive alone is hard. To drag the camera gear around, set up shots, get b roll, recover the equipment then trek onward to set up the next shot...I am so happy he was able to film the show, make it real and make it entertaining.
Survivorman is the only show I will watch when it comes to survival shows the rest are sitting around with camera Crews they all have to eat so that means there's plenty of food the whole thing's fake and a bunch of s*** anyone could tell you that anyone believes anything they see on the other survivor shows I have a bridge to sell you you'll make your money back and tolls and no time.
Dick Kondziela Survivorman, Dual Survival, Alone, I shouldn't be alive, Dude You're Screwed, Man, Women and Wild, Lone Target, and anything with Ray Mears is really good
Me and my friend got into an argument cause he said bear grylls is a better survivalist. HA. Les stroud does this shit alone and doesn't take unnecessary risks just for the sake of entertainment. He actually wants to teach people how to survive
I love Les and always knew Grilles was a fake. I remember one episode where he was trying to catch a salmon with a spear and couldn't get one. And the screen cuts and I shit you not it looks like a crew member just lobs a salmon down the stream.
No, he turns the dial to stupid for the show. Drinking urine and getting water from feces will get you killed. Running around like an idiot, jumping, and climbing sheer cliffs will get you killed. Eating something when you're not sure what it is will likely get you killed. In other words acting like Bear will very likely get you killed in a real survival situation. He can be as accomplished as he wants, but if he is going to teach survival he needs to stop performing like an idiot. Or at least acknowledge that his show is entertainment not educational.
Exactly. Grilles show needs to be renamed "Do not do this in a survival situation". Les emphasizes in almost every episode of his show that taking the safe path is always the best idea. Breaking an ankle while climbing or jumping from something is a death sentence and should only be done as a last resort. Eating and drinking things you don't know will get you killed and Les even has many stories directly from his show where he gets sick from the stuff he eats that he though was well cooked or otherwise properly prepared.
You can't compare survivorman against Grylls, I was watching Grylls on TV and when I saw the show with the president I really stop watching, everything is not what it supose to be, yes he show couple of things but he is very good in survival, but in a show like that no way, everything is set up, Les is all about real things and senarios that people actualy have done, good job and looking forward for a new serie :)
These shows have different approach. One is to survive long term, and the other (M vs W) is to survive as one looks for help. I give Les props for doing the filming himself, and I give Bear (former British special forces) a thumbs up for bringing military survival tactics to the screen. The only regret is that they never showed the secret ingredient for survival, bringing a soccer ball.
Kevin B What's wrong with that? His belief is corroborated by thousands of cases with eyewitness testimony and physical evidence. This would be more than enough for any court of law. In addition, Canada has more wilderness than most other countries. Hence, if they do exist, who is more likely to see one than a lone expert on the wild, filming in Canada? And he did catch one on video on at least one occasion! Maintaining an open mind is the best defence against the tyranny of the elites!
This is Les Stroud's biggest flaw. And NO, there is not a single proper scientist in the field who has anything but derision for the laughable idea of bigfoot. Even scientists who have looked into all that " thousands of cases with eyewitness testimony and physical evidence". It IS proper bullshit. You are extremely gullible.
Johannes Wiberg, doesn't mean you can shit on what someone believes in. I believe in ghosts, problem? Billions of people believe in some form of god, is there a problem with that?
+Candllight Of course I can shit on other people's beliefs. You might find it rude, but that doesn't make it impossible of factually incorrect. Your belief in ghosts is as ludicrous as a belief in Bigfoot. Show me proper evidence for either published in a peer reviewed journal and I might reconsider. A belief in a god is also ludicrous, some forms less so, some even more so. And you asked me if there's a problem with people believing in some form of god... yeah, only most conflicts in our world and the majority of oppression against people, and the resistance to scientific progress and new ideas. How's that for a start?
Eye witness testimony is extremely unreliable, especially when it comes to bigfoot. If bigfoot existed, anywhere in the world that is accessible by humans, we'd either have a bigfoot corpse, or a live bigfoot in a cage by now.
I'll add this. Bear is reported to have served in the British SAS regiment. While he may have taken some theatrical and artistic liberties in his show, he would have had to pass a rather hard survival course in order to join that unit. Remember, the SAS is the same unit that the legendary John "Lofty" Wiseman served in. It's England's special forces.
not become depressed in the wilderness from the lonelyness, is too be introvert , be happy with youreself and what u accomplised, if you gonna become depressed when it becomes boring, well sensetive arentya? no will too live.. hardened youreself and always boost youre own moral too keep youre going..
its not as easy as you think. Depression comes naturally when you are alone and in a way "helpless". Its hard to keep morale high when everything seems pointless and meaningless, its easiest to just take your life to stop it all.
Not he same thing, in the children's hospital everyone is there to boost morale and keep spirits high, imagine that you're a dying kid that knows it and there's not one person to comfort you, nothing to help pass time, just you, the future and your thoughts.
extroverts can just as easily slip into depression as introverts given the chance. humans crave interaction with each other, we're a very social animal. Take away any socialization and we become depressed. while introverts may be more prone to them seeking solitude, they don't automatically become depressed. extroverts also aren't immune because they seek out this interaction. In fact introverts may be better suited to deal with isolation since they can entertain themselves for far longer before the thoughts of being alone sink in. that week long expedition alone might be a vacation for an introvert. an extrovert it might as well be hell unless someone else is with them.
Nothing complicated to say. I simply truly enjoyed watching Les Stroud in Survivorman. I always waited with anticipation for the next episode. The rest of them were and are poor pretenders.
nice vid looper never disappoint, twd and game of thrones fan on here maybe pleased to knw my death predicton vid is doing really well for s8 of twd , enjoy :)
Thank you for posting this video, I enjoyed your points of view on Les, Bear is a military short term reservoir, not a long term, he might survive for a few days, but nothing like Les can out do any day of the year, Bear is much like all of Hollywood's bunch of wanna bee's... Paid for.. Before Les came along, here in Quebec, we had a Montreal survivalist teacher who would take his university/collage student's out every Summer for survival training, would even spend his Summer vacations living off of the Quebec landscapes and video his many adventures for his new students...
Big Jon dude he never said big foot was real, never. first time I saw the show that was I was expecting. He didn't come out and say big foot is bull shit nor did he say the big guy is out here some where.
Survivorman was my favorite show as a kid, and honestly learned a lot from it. Sure some things I’ll probably never have to use but it’s cool to know 🤷♀️
I love watching them both , got all 6 seasons of bear and 3 of les on DVD, wish les had not stopped, I've learned a lot from both , sure bear does a lot for entertainment value but he's damn good at survival, practically speaking ive learned more from les , I'd love to meet them both !
Great post. BTW, he was the first to use what is now called a selfie stick. He would attach them to his torso so he could still use his arms. He carried several small video cameras along with batteries and SDC cards.
If you're referring to my post. There is no direct link, just the fact he was using purpose built staffs/poles as far back as 2003. I'm pretty sure popular use of selfie sticks didn't take off till after the iphone became popular.
