There are even a few promo pictures taken of the Stooges incarnation of Moe, Curly Joe and Emil Sitka. Emil's Stooge name was to be "Harry" and he was to be the onscreen brother of Larry. Interesting choice of names as Moe was billed as "Harry" Howard in the Stooges first feature film Soup To Nuts. Surprising that you missed Joe Palma in the list of Stooges, as he filled in as the "fake Shemp" in a handful of shorts before Joe Besser joined the act.

Know what’s great about the three stooges In the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s when the Three Stooges were at their peak, actors didn’t make that much money, probably less than regular jobs, and the fact that the stooges worked their asses off to make us laugh regardless of the money and worked as if they were making 30 Million an episode just to make us laugh, God rest their souls

I'm one of those who actually like Joe Besser as the third Stooge. True, he may have his detractors even after his death in 1988 but as an established comic, he brought his own unique style to the act. Later in life, Besser expressed some dismay that people only recognized him for his brief tenure with the Three Stooges. However, he eventually softened, realizing that the act continued to bring him his greatest exposure. Whereas with Curly Joe DeRita, although he enjoyed working with Moe and Larry and made a living doing it, he was not a fan of the Stooges' humor. He once said in an interview, "I don't think the Stooges were funny. I'm not putting you on, I'm telling the truth-they were physical, but they just didn't have any humor about them. Take, for instance, Laurel and Hardy. I can watch their films and I still laugh at them and maybe I've seen them four or five times before. But when I see that pie or seltzer bottle, I know that it's not just lying around for no reason. It's going to be used for something. I was with the Stooges for 12 years and it was a very pleasant association but I just don't think they were funny." Despite his indifference to the Stooges' style of slapstick, he had nothing but respect and appreciation for the trio.

Moe Howard was not that shrewd of a businessman regarding their act. During their 24 years of making short subjects for Columbia pictures. The stooges never got a pay increase the entire time. And they had no idea how popular they actually were.
@melissacooper4282
@melissacooper4282 3 года назад
True. Harry Cohn really took advantage of them during their time of working at Columbia Pictures. He never told them how popular they really were because he didn't want to give them a raise. And they never asked for a raise because Cohn had connections with gangsters. Moe didn't want to rock the boat.
@mulehead126
@mulehead126 3 года назад
FALSE. The Stooges each made approximately 20K per year, which is the equivalent of close to $400,000 in today's dollars. And that was for working for only 6-7 weeks per year filming shorts. They were free to leave every year when their contract ran out but knew they had it good. And they were well aware of their popularity, their personal appearance tours drew big crowds - and brought in a lot of money. The bio-movie made several years ago perpetuated many myths about the Stooges that simply aren't true.
@mulehead126
@mulehead126 3 года назад
@@melissacooper4282 not true. The Stooges knew full well how popular they were, their annual personal appearance tours drew big crowds and they were treated like the stars that they were. They each made in the equivalent of close to $400K per year per Stooge in today's dollars, and that was for working 6-7 weeks per year at Columbia. Harry Cohn loved the Stooges, felt they were a good luck charm.
@mulehead126
@mulehead126 3 года назад
@Paul Kostiak which had nothing to do with Moe or his management of the Stooges. No actors received royalties for pre-1960 films.
@shackdaddy7106
@shackdaddy7106 3 года назад
@@mulehead126 Where did you get your information from. I got mine from a biography I read of the stooges. Written by Moe Howard’s daughter. And even back then $20,000/yr was underpaid compared to what other Hollywood stars were making. And don’t forget that money was split three ways. Also they worked far more on their shorts than six or seven weeks a year. And they received the same amount from Columbia every year which in terms of inflation which you brought up is in effect a cut in pay every single year. $400,000 would be correct in terms of 1934 dollars in 2021. But in 1957 when they were let go by Columbia Pictures that is under $200,000 in 2021.
