This video takes a look at what planes the US Air Force has today and what makes it the biggest air force in the world. It will explore aircraft in development that are to join the arsenal in the near future. And it will also analyze some issues that beset the Air Force, which might lower all those paper fleet numbers in an an actual battle.

Air force based militaries like the US is outdated militaries. The war in Ukraine made this obvious. Modern militaries use air force as support like artillery as. They cant use them offensively because they are easy to shoot down with modern anti air missiles. Those missiles are much cheaper of those planes.

If the US is seriously worried about numbers they can keep producing the F15EX , block 70 F16 and block 3 super hornet.These are fine for most missions after the stealth and drone forces have whittled down the small top tier forces most potential opponents possess or for the majority of recent situations where the US was fighting opposition with no serious aerospace capability.

Worth noting that between F16s and F35s alone, the US produces ~250 per year. Lot's of these are for export, but they maintain F16 production because it's simple to manufacture, they can ramp it up approximately 400% for the F16 without needing additional floor space, just more manpower from an extensive pool of trained aerospace technicians/engineers. Always consider the defence industrial base, as it is key to the overall strategic plan for the united states in having the ability to not only supply itself, but almost any of its allies should the need arise.

There's also the fact that every military has competing individuals and parties within it that cause seemingly irrational decisions. So there might be a lot of solid strategy behind the way militaries compete with asymmetric threats, but there is also a chance that someone important just likes having a big radar or a fancy plane, regardless of their utility. Like the US acts like it has the money to buy the best everything, for example. In a way this is brute forcing problem of what to procure. Secretly, procurers cut corners where they have to. And the corruption and costs that remain unaddressed have consequences. Beneficial civilian projects and programs could be attempted if so much wasn't spent on pure military dominance. The US might be suffering the consequences of these civilian sacrifices as well as it's moral sacrifices in the eyes of its people and the world. Things to think about.

And this is why I laugh when people talk of Russia as the 2nd best army in the world. China has passed them many years ago, and it's growing way faster. Other than nukes, there's no field in which China cannot overmatch Russia. The real question is, what is their power ratio compared to the American coalition. Especially in this next 6 or so years before all the new 6th gen stuff comes online. I think it will take all the might of the opposition to win a decisive victory in case of conflict, it's not going to be a trivial matter if those superpowers come to blows. On the other hand, if a war doesn't happen, the armies of China and the US will be ridiculously advanced and powerful by 2040, it will be Desert Storm all over again if either of those behemoths decide to flex on some medium sized third world country.

I still hold the same view that military technology capabilities are proportional to economic capabilities. When a country has no money, it is difficult to research and deploy modern weapons in large quantities. It is a basic fact that China's economic growth and high-tech development are developing. Seven years ago, Binkov made a video comparing the power of China and Russia (the J20 was not yet in service at that time). At that time, Binkov said that China's conventional military power surpassed Russia, and many people were not convinced at the time. Even in this video today, many people compare Russia's predicament in Ukraine in order to belittle China. It is very likely that the people who praised Russia a few years ago were also this group of people...

Their not a competitor as they answer to the same sovereign. Then in practise you could just combine the US military air fleet into one overall number and that is what China must aim to surpass. The US debt levels and the resulting constraints on any US defence development not deemed imperatively necessary for US homeland defence could be China's best friend. Even if most of US debt is owed to Americans themselves, this is still then not the US governments property, and if money is being wasted so some US elites can assert their personal will around the world (that is not necessary for America's own defence) unlikely regular Americans would take too kindly to this.
@Seastallion
@Seastallion 9 дней назад
One factor not mentioned is the difference between pilot training in the US vs China. China's pilots are less trained with fewer hours of flight time. In a conflict scenario, US superior training combined with superior airframes and numbers would quickly shrink China's numbers through attrition. China's inexperience with military matters in general is a serious hurdle for them. They effectively don't even have any aircraft carriers, the first one they bought was unfinished and serving as a casino when they bought it, and the 2nd carrier is a clone of that one. Their 3rd carrier isn't operational and is really just a test platform, not a functional threat.

That is alsob why China has been trying to get retired Western airforce pilots to train their forces.
@Seastallion
@Seastallion 9 дней назад
@@casbot71 First, I consider such people traitors, but even that is only a limited fix. That's not enough to compete against an entire military already invested with such training for more than half a century in short order. The limited number of pilots getting such training will only marginally improve China's capabilities. They still don't have the hardware assets to fully utilize some of the more advanced methods of training they would need to compete more evenly.

Just to point out something else: The Chinese aircraft engines are built with materials that just don't meet the US level of Metallurgy. What that translates into is more downtime for maintenance and engine replacement. Their engines wear out a lot faster and for every hour of flight they require about 2-3 times the maintenance time that US Aircraft require. Even if they had 2x the number of aircraft, they would have a seriously difficult time keeping them in the air to meet the US Aircraft coming.
@dominuslogik484
@dominuslogik484 11 дней назад
some chinese engines have improved that ratio significantly but China and Russia both struggle to provide time and money to fleets of older equipment to bring them up to standards with the newest production. so if china made 200 of something with bad engines then started making them with good engines those 200 will most often continue to have the bad engines for years or even decades.

China has surpassed Russia in military power, I thought this before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. US is a global superpower, China is a regional superpower (at least currently and this decade). Manufacturing base of China is unmatched. While they don’t have the top quality military hardware like the US, quantity eventually triumphs. China’s stealth tech is second rate though. It should be noted that "mission capable rate" refers to normal operations. Planes are "non mission capable" because they have anywhere from a major to a relatively minor maintenance issue or they are overdue for an inspection. The USAF is very protective of its aircraft and will ground them over something that most likely will not cause an issue, but "most likely" is not good enough when talking about the safety of a $100m aircraft and crew during peacetime training. In large scale major combat operations, many of the maintained issues that those planes have will be waived.

J-20 is NOT even as stealthy as F-35. And this can already be proven. 1ST. Their is a 3rd party radar scattering CAD simulation done on Aircraft 101. Without RAM coatings, they compared all 3 F-35, J-20, and Su-57 low observable LO characteristics through their shapes/geometry alone. In a 20x20deg frontal aspect, "J-20 RCS is higher than F-35A RCS through the frequency range (approximately 3.5 times in X-band, 1.5 times in VHF band), it still has much better RCS characteristic when compared to Su-57.” So in geometry alone without the RAM coatings, a 3.5 times difference would translate to 37% difference in detection range in the X-band which is pretty significant. Even with RAM coatings of the same level used on F-35 or F-22, J-20 is still less stealthy. But obviously their will still be a substantial difference in RAM coatings. So F-35 definitely has the “first look, first shoot, first kill” maybe even a 2nd shot in beyond visual range BVR. 2ND. Both Pacific Air Force (PACAF) head Gen. Wilsbach and US Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Brown assessment of J-20 as “It’s not anything to lose a lot of sleep over” when F-35s were able to close in on J-20s and observe them near Japan. 3RD. J-20’s canards and the whole vertical stabilizers are moving. Plus their are more than 1000+ F-35s. That is 5 times more than J-20 with more than half of that in US arsenal. So US has both quality and quantity.

It was actually the other way around, the J-20’s were the ones who approached and observed the F-35’s. I’ll try to find the video when I get the chance, and this doesn’t mean the J-20 is objectively the better aircraft, but in that situation the J-20’s did gain tactical advantage.

@user-wr8sm6jp6j
@user-wr8sm6jp6j 11 дней назад
The Russian Air Force lacks funds, and the number of modern fighter jets purchased is very low. The Chinese Air Force is completely the opposite. The average age of its fleet aircraft is low, the sortie rate is higher, and the completion rate is higher. Moreover, the annual production capacity of the J20 has now surpassed that of the F35. The new version of the J20B equipped with the WS15 GaN radar has already started flight testing the year before last. As for the 4.5 generation aircraft, the production capacity of the J16 is much higher than that of the F15EX. The gap between the Chinese Air Force and the U.S. Air Force is that the first is the insufficient inventory, the second is that the pilots are not as experienced as the United States, and the third is the lack of strategic strike and delivery capabilities. For example, the H20 has been delayed, and the United States has the C5 transport aircraft, but China does not. However, in terms of the early warning aircraft fleet, China has surpassed the United States...

Good video, but I would like to push back a bit. I’m pretty sure you are missing a fairly large number of aircraft, both fighters and other platforms. I think perhaps 400 fighters from the US total, ~178 tankers, 38 AWACS, etc. Many are in the war reserve (storage) and others are scattered in places you wouldn’t expect (like the US navy operating a couple of squadrons of F-16’s in aggressor squadrons, air show teams or just sitting in the desert somewhere. Those fighters in storage all have hot production lines and could readily be modernized and brought into service in a long war to replace losses. Current production lines in the US can build upwards of 274 modern aircraft per year, most of which is sold internationally, and there are large numbers of parts in storage to bring back planes from the boneyard and the military practices doing it regularly. As to readiness, I think it is not the issue you think it is in a wartime scenario. Certifying aircraft as ready is an involved process that can include engine runs or even test flights along with a bunch of other tests and checks to achieve certification. It is actually detrimental to aircraft fleet management to maintain excessively high readiness because it might literally involve putting extra hours on aging airframes or engines, etc. Besides, much of the mtx is deferrable and is fact deferred without really impacting the ability of the aircraft to perform most missions, so I think it is completely unrealistic to think either side would not do missions unless there was some safety critical item preventing it. As to the Chinese though, new airplanes or not, they have crap engines that need to go through major overhauls far, far more often than US engines. That implies much more lower level maintenance also. There is no reason to think other Chinese components do not suffer similar problems. That said I’m sure they would also maintain high levels of availability in wartime conditions as well. The U.S. has numbers, the tech advantage and a vastly larger aerospace industry to draw on. China doesn’t have tankers because they are barely able to build them. Most of the world’s aerospace capacity is either in the US (over 50% of the total) or its partners (most of the rest). There are basing issues in the western pacific that along with distance will slow down sortie generation and could cause problems if Taiwan were to quickly collapse, but the reality is that China just isn’t in the same league when it comes to air power. Not this decade anyways.
@user-wr8sm6jp6j
@user-wr8sm6jp6j 11 дней назад
It's good to live in your own information cocoon. Let me say a few things. ① The problem of Chinese engines has been solved. What do you mean by "American engines are stronger"? At most, it's about service life, not thrust. The thrust of WS10BE that China exports to Pakistan has reached 14.5KN, and WS10C has reached 15K N. Is it a reasonable guess? The early version of F119 was also at this level, not to mention that China also has WS15. The high thrust of the US F135 is based on a large bypass ratio, which results in the extremely poor supersonic cruise capability of the F35. ② China has a new type of tanker YY20, and the number is being rolled out at a relatively fast speed. As for why it is not as many as the United States, it is because there is no global deployment mission. It only needs to deal with the South China Sea and Taiwan, and at most to the second island chain. ③ The large-scale grounding of aircraft is the United States' own situation. You think that the Chinese Air Force also has this situation, but you are judging others by yourself. It is a kind of conclusion first, and then look for "evidence"😅😅

Let's discuss [technical advantage] again. The F16CDblock52, which is widely equipped by the US Air Force, is compared with the JF17 block3. China's evaluation of the Jf17 block3 is far inferior to the J10C. You can look at Pakistan's evaluation, 【PAF pilot: "The F-16 block 52 is ancient compared to the avionics on the JF-17 now. We know because we fly them both" Source: Airforce Monthly, 01-2024 "JF-17C makes public debut". 】It can be seen that the avionics of block52 are far behind those of JF17C, let alone J10C? Even if it is upgraded to F16V, it is difficult to discuss which one is stronger, rather than the so-called huge technical advantage.

Actually, I suspect you are counting the Harriers and I am not (I don’t really consider them a 4th gen aircraft). Not counting the fifth-generation aircraft. Let me tell you, the aircraft in the aircraft graveyard have little practical significance. They are just used as spare parts. One factor to consider in a US vs China future conflict is that the US is a global power. As such, China would never face more than 2/3 of US naval or air forces. time and money, also mission profiling, the F16 is a good multirole jet for high intensity air campaigns the f15 is mainly an air superiority fighter. sure it has some multirole packages but not on the same level and the f16 and new f35. also why replace the 35 now, its very new compared to literally everything else. The F15EX is a extremely expensive package deal. its not something you just sign off on out of nowhere, bidget constraits and beurocrats need to look over the proper documentation before a buy can be made. im sure if the US air force got all the money in the world they'd make lockheed build thousands of factories and just chug out plane after plane after plane of f35's f22's f15Ex's etc etc. but they dont, sure the US budget is milehigh, but most of that goes to maintenance of already existing platforms. huge production contracts take years to make and plan out, the f35 has been on the books for decades now. but now that development is truly reached a safe point lockheed had really put the pedal to the metal and churned out a boatload of jets for not just the US but its close allies. But anyhow the F15EX is a very good plane, but it lacks certain technologies the f35 has and parts commonality. the more standardised the NATO and close-Nato allies are the easier it is to work together during a conflict, logistics become more or less the same, thats why ammotypes in most of the west has been 5.56 NATO and most tank cannons were the german L/44 and L/55's and its licenced copies. thats why most nato countries bought the starfighters, the phantoms, the sabre's, the falcons and now the lightning 2.
@mishkalewis8409
@mishkalewis8409 11 дней назад
it all about interoperability, and shaping defence strategies. NATO splits up its countries in weird ways on purpose, like f.ex. The US is the defacto military leader of NATO and aircraft provider. the germans usually stood for most NATO countries tank selections. albeit in the cold war it was also huge in the battle rifle space and still is with new carbines and rifles. The british are focused more on special missions and QRF. the French is a different breed of weird so i wont even go into that. The Germans alone have several deals for half/half divisions like: 130th German/British Bridging Engineer Battalion Franco-German Brigade Multinational Corps Northeast 43rd Mechanized Brigade (dutch/german brigade) but without striving to far, its mostly either budget constraits or the need for parts commonality in nato for easier cooperation. and sometimes its arguably just dumb politics. but its not as easy as just saying why not just take that thing because its better. a good example for that would be the Northrop/McDonnell Douglas YF-23 A Much better plane, but more expensive, thus they went with Lockheed instead, albeit both jets are fucking insane and stupid good for their time. but the better plane ultimately lost because money wasnt around for it.
@iivin4233
@iivin4233 11 дней назад
Money can be exchanged for goods and services, but sometimes the good and/or service you want costs more money than you have. This may go some way towards explaining why the EX isn't being purchased and why American school busses don't have golden seat belt buckles. Or seat belts at all.

China would likely be in the realm of 1.6-1.7 billion today without it. Its the inevitable crisis that had to happen basically. Likely Chinese society will need a massive reorganization so that older people's skills in non-manual labour job are utilized much better (such as in leadership/mentor roles) so that the limited pool of younger people can be focused solely on manual labour. Most likely the aging population dilemma that is being faced by most developed nations also will be temporary until the generation when the birth rate was higher dies out, then the age pyramid will even out again. China likely needs to half its population if it wants it to be sustainable.

Everyone loves to compare fighter numbers, but they forget about the most critical factor: RANGE. None of the USAF planes as the range to operate over Taiwan without being based there. That means they'd based on runways getting bombed by Chinese missiles. They could maybe fly in from Okinawa or the philippines, but that's hardly safe either and would give them just a few minutes of loiter time. That's why the air force is pushing the B21 and NGAD so hard, both with an emphasis on range: most of its existing planes are useless for a serious fight over Taiwan.

its the lack of ability to rely on regional allies to carry the fight on their own, thankfully with Japan and South Korea China and North Korea can be kept in check but if it weren't for the US those two wouldn't be enough so the majority of the air power would have to come from the U.S. in the case of Russia in Europe I think the EU and NATO (especially with the new addition of Sweden and Finland) has started to wake up and the US might be able to shift away some of its focus in that region for air power. in fact just between Sweden and Finland that added another 125 combat jets into the NATO airpower count, that brings the total somewhere over 800 combat air frames which is sadly a bit low when you consider how many nations are required to get to that number but at the very least it means with the US putting down around 200 fighters in the region air superiority should be easily achieved.

In fact, China's fighter jets had too many old aircraft in service before, which affected their combat effectiveness. For example, the J6 fighter jet was discontinued in 1980, but the People's Liberation Army used it until 2012. After Xi Jinping came to power, he was willing to spend money to throw all the old aircraft into the garbage dump and replace them with modern fighter jets. Therefore, in ten years, a large number of new aircraft have been put into service. This has little to do with "design" and "maintenance".
