The loadmaster also does a very technical job: precisely positioning the loads/ weights in the cargo area in a way that helps keep the aircraft in balance from front to back and side to side. 👍😁
That tornado has nothing to do with reverse thrust. The air going into the engine is the same whether it is in reverse or forward and the tornados form all of the time on take-off.
The engines are 40,000 HP vacuum cleaners. This is why they do FOD checks on carriers, as anything that gets loose is picked up. The only aircraft that don't get this are those with rear intake over-wing inlets, and they can suck ice from the main wing.
During test runs at high thrust large powerplant ive seen the intake suck moisture thru the concrete underneath right up thru the inlet like this all the time but you must keep the area clean of all fod
The Tornado has nothing to do with Reverse Thrust, those tornados are formed when there isn't enough wind blowing into the engine when it takes power, which would be the case when the aircraft is moving backwards or when wind is blowing from behind the aircraft into the exhaust. When running Gas Turbine engines while standing still you always want the aircraft facing the wind to prevent this type of thing happening. I'd also like to add that almost all airplanes this size including commercial airliners have thrust reversers and it isn't anything special...
@0:24 : FFS, it's "Head Up Display" - I should know, I was the software team leader for C-17 HUD 03 series display / monitor software in 1990/1991. And all turbofan engines will create a "mini tornado" under the right conditions, the power of said engines is irrelevant, C-17 is nothing special here in that respect.
You can essentially blame video games for that one. It's pretty ingrained in popular culture. I wince a bit just about every time I see a sentence like "A helmets Heads-Up Display" instead of Helmet Mounted Display.
