As an Mexico-USA fan, seeing both of the national teams struggle to qualify really scares how they'll perform when the WC starts, never thought Canada would be our best contender to get far in the WC for North America.

On the Mexico side, I think Tata Martino is stuck on the mindset of respecting seniority and starting places to a fault. If you earned a starting spot, you get a few chances to screw it up before you force his hand and he benches you. If you are a young new guy, you have to wait your turn even if you are clearly in better form than the guy in the starting spot. His mindset would be conservative if he applied it to a club over one season. Stretch it over four years, and you have the Mexican NT current situation. You guys are blessed to have Gregg in comparison.

It's a relief that the U.S. made it back. It was agonizing seeing U.S. lose to Costa Rica, but I had ease when the match was ending and both teams just passed the ball around. I will say this however. In 2002, we did the bare minimum in qualifying. We were 3rd in qualifying, including a campaign which saw us lose to Honduras *at home*. That US team made the quarterfinals at the World Cup and arguably should have made the semifinals. In 2006, we cruised through qualifying, securing our spot with three matches to spare. We got bounced in the group with only one measly point. You don't have to qualify in style. You just have to qualify.

Really quite surprised Cameron Carter-Vickers hasn't been featuring for USMNT, I think he is vital for stabilising the defence in Qatar, so he should be called up

I'm excited for Canada to be going to the World Cup, I really am, but we lost twice this last window, and we really truly had the potential to get 5-7 points in this window. Hell just go balls to the wall and go for 9, but we ended with 3 and Topped the Table... on goal difference. Canada had its first real taste of pressure, against teams that have been to a World Cup before. As Herdman said, this will be a lesson for the boys and it'll hopefully humble them a bit so that they don't go into the World Cup with any preconceived notions. I want them to do well, and I'll be rooting for them all the way along their journey. USA run the risk of group stage elimination if Greg doesn't get his head out of the clouds and actually realizes what he's up against.

I do feel lucky for US fans. If it hadn't been for the CONCACAF 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualification still prioritized goal difference over head-to-head, the US team would have been dropped into 4th place, since they beat Costa Rica 2-1 at home but get beaten 2-0 away. I'm always taught to not celebrate until I officially get things in my hands, and the US team almost gave me a perfect example for the 2nd time in a row :)))))))))))

I don’t think people understand that yes the US is the most talented squad player by player, but they are extremely young. The US plays with 4 teenagers (Musah [19], Reyna [19], Pepi [19], and Busio [19]) and everyone else is between 20-23 except for 4 other players who are over 23. People expect them to play like experienced players but no one wants to accept the fact that talent AND experience lead to dominant performances. Canada’s average age is 27 and is mixed with a ton of experienced players. Every loss the US had was all due to mistakes caused by the inexperience of the team. Also, can we stop saying Costa Rica played with a C team? Navas is the reason why Costa Rica didn’t lose and no team in the qualifiers brings up c team players. Yes they used several substitutes but they also had starters like Navas and waston. Lmao

The draws have come out today as well so group B is England, America, Iran and the winner of Scotland/Wales/Ukraine. So crashing out in the group stages looks fairly unlikely

I don’t think you should discount Costa Rica’s side in that last match however, (please note I am Costa Rican so there will be some obvious bias in my statement) Costa Rica is known for playing with the exact same group of players from the 2014 World Cup and although that team made history, 2014 was now 8 years ago and most of those player like Bryan Ruiz are now retiring. On top of that many of our players had yellow cards so if they had gone into the match trying to score a shit ton of goals there was a high chance that at least one or two of our star players would get carded and have to miss out on our intercontinental playoff. Yes most of the players that we had on the field were young players that were giving their first cap for the country but it was a game at home a place where historically the US has never won so we came out the gate with something to prove. I just don’t think you should have counted out the Costa Rican side saying that even Vietnams team could beat them because at the end of the day the main point of everything (which is something you definitely touched on) is that the USMNT dropped the ball

Thanks for not being afraid to speak your opinion. The truth is there really isn’t any hope with Berhalter. Our young squad is a factor but I believe we could perform at least a little better under different direction. I expect a group stage exit no matter the draw cause of how inconsistent and underwhelming this team has been at times.

USA's away record this qualification was shockingly bad, too. They only beat Honduras (and almost lost had the second half not played out the way it did), 3 draws and 3 losses. Meanwhile, Mexico, despite their form being extremely poor, came out as the best away team in the region (4 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses).

the thing that flabbergasted me about this team is how they seemed completely incapable of putting two decent performances in a row. We'd have a good game, lackluster game, great game, bad game... it became almost predictable at times. We'd beat Mexico one day, lost to Panama the next, thrash Panama one day, get thrashed by CR the next... Look at the run Costa Rican went on, 19 points out of a possible 21, it is possible to do a run like that in CONCACAF... our team is practically bi-polar!

I felt like the Shane Long move in the Mexico game was a good move because the altitude of the Estadio Azteca was getting the US players. They were getting tired in the second half so Berhalter thought it was best to focus on the energy in defending because after that Pefok miss they were not getting any chances so an extra defender wasn’t a bad idea and it ended up paying off the defense kept a clean sheet
