In this video, I keep referring to the books as 'Volume 1', 'Volume 2', etc.That could be confusing if you're thinking of the trade paperback 'volumes' of which there are over 30. The official term used for these (as you can see on the cover) is 'Book 1', 'Book 2' and so on. Sorry for the goof-up!

Perfect ! I was bitten by the Yojimbo bug this summer and just pulled the trigger for Saga Volumes II, III, IV, V, and VI from eBay and Amazon- can’t wait to crack the pages and get busy :-)

I never was able to get the hardcovers especially with how much the first was going for second hand but thankfully I preordered the second printing of 1 and 9 last oct and was able to get both with 9 coming next month.

Hey Angshuman! Its the second time I’ve fallen in your trap (first was Bone series) and have decided to buy the Usagi Yojimbo Saga series :p Found some of these books on amazon and infibeam for price approx ₹1300/- each. Want to know what is the good price for these books...should I wait or go for these?

1,300 is a pretty decent price, I'd say! The paperbacks carry a list price of 25 dollars, which is somewhere between 1,600 and 1,800 rupees these days, so definitely worth getting at least a couple of volumes.

Will the usagi yojimbo origins trade paperbacks from IDW colour collections collect just the fantagraphics volumes or will they continue through into the dark horse saga editions also?

From what I can tell, the first volume of IDW's Origins are issues 1-7 of the Fantagraphics series, so they *are* colouring and publishing stories from before the ones collected in the Dark Horse Saga books. HOWEVER, that is the original Volume 2 - Samurai. Volume 1, Ronin', contained stories from the Albedo and Critters anthologies, preceding the Fantagraphics series, and I don't know if they plan to collect those separately. The very first appearance/story has been expanded, redrawn and recoloured and collected in IDW's new TPB Bunraku and Other Stories.

Those Hardcovers must be pretty hard to come by! Are all of those signed and remarqued?

Yes, the 1500-limited editions are all individually signed, remarqued and numbered. Book 1 sold out pretty fast (I think it may have been limited to 900 instead of 1,500 copies, but can't confirm), but as of right now I believe all the others are still available!

Very nice collection! I have 1-5 TPB, and 6 in hardcover. I'm heartbroken though, they seem to be out of print, and have jumped WAY up in price (2020 is one helluva year!) I haven't found recent news, do you think Dark Horse will reprint these, given that Stan Sakai has moved to IDW? Thanks, and great video! Subbed.

Welcome to the channel, and I hope you find plenty to enjoy here! I did see that Sakai is working on original art for Saga Vol 9, which - coupled with a tidbit I heard about Dark Horse retaining the black & white rights - makes me think that these earlier Saga volumes will be reprinted, in paperback if not in the limited HCs. IDW apparently holds the colour rights, so they will be reprinting all/ select stories in colour as well, and Fantagraphics continue to hold on to their rights. So there is (even in a year such as this) still hope! 😁

Unfortunately, some of the later ones (strangely) seem to be out of print (but available used). Dark Horse did recently reprint the first volume, so maybe they have plans to do the same for all of them? You never know with them, though...

Hey there! Great serie! Just watched it out in one sitting. And guess what? I have seen it by the profile of Stan Sakai on facebook! Don't know if you knew, a post from yesterday. By the way, I saw there is a sandman series here too so I am going to watch it now since it is on my reading list. I want to know, have you read Lone wolf and cub, or Vagabond? Vagabond lead me to Usagi, and Lone wolf is the one I am reading and loving now. What do you think of these works?

Leonardo Jahn welcome and I’m so glad you enjoyed this video series! And have fun with Sandman. In answer to your questions, I have not yet read Vagabond, although I hear good things about it. But I read Lone Wolf and Cub for the first time many years ago in college, and have been a fan ever since. Especially the artwork and the pacing of it for the storytelling is absolutely unique!

WHEN do you recommend reading the Legends companion book? After Book 8? Or just inbetween somewhere before?

You can actually read it any way you want, since they are mainly unrelated to the main series and were published throughout. Space Usagi (the first section) was actually published as three different miniseries during Fantagraphics, Mirage and Dark Horse runs, and I'd say you can read that between the first and second Saga volumes. Senso and Yokai...yeah, you can read them after finishing Book 8. But honestly, any time after Book 5 should be fine, just for the art style and tone to match.

These limited edition hardcovers seem to start with Volume 2 (Shades of Death) rather than the first storyline (The Ronin). Any idea why that is?

Yes the 'Usagi Saga' volumes, limited hardcover and non-limited paperback, start with Shades of Death, which is actually Volume 8. This covers the series from the Mirage Comics stories and then continue through the Dark Horse ones. That's what Dark Horse the rights to. Volumes 1-7 (The Ronin to Gen's Story) continue to be published by Fantagraphics, in individual volumes as well as their 'Special Edition' two-volume box set. @@AR24912404 If you mean the Fantagraphics box set, they did reprint the paperback one a few years ago, so I think they will do it again in the future, especially as Usagi Yojimbo finds a new audience and has a TV show and all that. I don't think they will reprint the hardcover box set though!

Do you know if saga volumes 2-8 are getting reprinted in second edition? (Like volume 1 is)?

As far as I know, not in hardcover, although they will all be reprinted in paperback. Vol 2-9 have runs of 1,500 copies but 1 just had 900 copies in HC, so the second run will only be of 600 to get it to the same 1500 total copies, keeping it 'Limited'

@@felixwalne3494 1,000 pounds?! That's insanity! There are still copies to be found in the US, ranging between 100 dollars and 200 dollars that I can see, and some used copies at less than a hundred dollars. Given they are 80-dollar books to start with, 100 for a limited edition isn't too bad, I suppose, but 1,000 GBP sounds nonsensical. As for the print run of the second edition, no, I'm not 100% sure - that is just what I've heard others (mainly viewers and commenters and folks on the FtLoC discord server) say, so I am just parroting them!

@@ftloc its insane! On Abebooks.co.uk i found volume 3 and 4 are over £1000 its crazy. People just have them sat on their shelves still in the plastic. What a waste. I have emailed dark horse and tweeted them to find out, i hope they redo another small batch of hard copies :) as ive managed to get volume 9 hardcover and the 2nd edition of volume 1 preordered. I can find 5&6 for about £50-60 which is very good.

I can't find a straight answer to that either! I heard that Dark Horse still has the rights to print and sell Usagi Yojimbo in Black and White, so I see no reason for them not to line up reprints, but if common sense and logic ruled the world wouldn't be the mess it is today...

Sure! The hardcovers are limited edition signed copies so they won;t be around forever so it's a good idea to grab what you can when you can afford them. But even though you could really read from anywhere, if you can get the paperback volumes 1 and 2 reasonably priced, I'd highly recommend going for them because they have some terrific stories in them! 😁

@@Franky007ization Oh that's a shame! Usagi has now moved from Dark Horse to IDW, so all these old editions will slowly disappear. The hardcover you mention will still be a signed limited edition, of that's interesting to you, but I'm sure the new publishers will be bringing out new editions of all Usagi, old and new, if you feel like waiting. 👍🏽

@@Franky007ization Oh yes, if it is the limited edition then it will have a signed and numbered bookplate just like these in this video. Prices for these are between 150-200 dollars on Amazon USA, so I am guessing it is definitely out of print.

Yeah its frustrating, used copys sometimes appear on ebay and Amazon but people will list them at 3-4x the price because of its unavailability. I contacted Dark horse about it and they said they have no plans to reprint at this current time, that was a while back though, maybe they have a new edition in the works or something...

anab0lic Personally, I cant fathom it; without reprinting Vol 2, how does one expect to sell more Vol 3s 4s and 5s? What do I know, though; maybe Dark Horse knows more about comics publishing, I think? I’m glad you contacted Dark Horse, maybe more such queries will indicate some demand to them.

Hmm, which #16? Issue 16 of the Mirage series (the second series/Volume 2), Issue 16 of the Dark Horse Comics (third series/ Volume Three) or TPB Volume 16 ('The Shrouded Moon'?) They're all in here, chronologically, just as part of different Books.

Ah no, I was saying the colour files for all 16 Mirage issues (all of the second series) were lost, so they are here in black and white. As they are in the TPBs, I believe. The only place you can see the colours are in the original issues.
