A large gutter/cess pool. Sewage disposal was simple when these castles were constructed. Genius

Moat is a natural sunken ring they take advantage of. This ring is from the chamber collapsing down bellow. This at one time was a huge waste chamber that gives way. And its insides are the used to build the castle. The lowest ring is flooded out. It's all a waste chamber rebuilt lol from its poo

The Railway Children. 1906 Edwardian Era Novel. One Rainy day. At Oakworth Station in Yorkshire. Hope Mother doesn't get too wet. We don't want her ill again. Its like being in a sieged castle. The arrows & the bows striking agenist the battlements. Its more like a great big garden squirt. You're a great big garden squirt. Thank you. Stop it you two. There's a train coming. Oakworth Station. Its only a shower.

The primary purpose of a water moat wasn’t necessarily as a surface barrier. They were likely to prevent tunneling into the castle.

@@daddyaf945that’s a lie, nobody ever tunneled into a castle or even attempted to. They didn’t have the equipment we have today to build a tunnel so they would’ve had to use shovels and placed beams at certain points to keep the tunnels from collapsing. It would’ve taken way too long to ever be effective during a siege and if you ever did manage to dig the tunnel into their castle you’d be bottle necking your forces within the tunnel and you’d be easy to take out. Not to mention the fact that once you actually got the tunnel dug into the castle grounds they could always just fill back up the tunnel to try to close it off again. If tunneling were really a problem people back then would’ve made their castle walls partially underground so when they try to dig their way in they’d just hit the stone wall and have to dig even deeper and longer. Also you wouldn’t be able to see where your digging to so the tunnel could be off a bit and even if it’s still inside the castle walls what if you end up trying to dig an exit under a building? Most of the structures would probably have stone foundations so it’s likely they wouldn’t be able to get through, they also wouldn’t know how big the building is so they wouldn’t know where it begins or where it ends. They’d essentially be forced to start over from scratch so your weird medieval mole-man theory just doesn’t make any sense. The amount of time and effort necessary to pull it off and the low chance of success and high chances of failure make it impossible for anyone to be stupid enough to try something like that.

@@AFPLJohnny That’s very funny. Not technically advanced enough to dig a tunnel, but more than capable of building not only castle walls but subterranean walls. I apologies for going with published history when you were obviously there. All kidding aside, tunneling under walls was a problem. That’s why motes were put in place.

@@daddyaf945 if it ever did happen it couldn’t have happened often or be the sole reason for the existence of moats, like I said it’s a waste of time and resources and at that point it might actually be faster to just starve them out. Moats would’ve kept siege towers from being placed against castle walls and they would’ve made it difficult to use a battering ram to smash through the gates so there are plenty of much more logical uses for a moat.

If someone really wanted to invade a castle they would have no problem swimming making sure they swim underwater so they don't see them
@KobeanHistory
@KobeanHistory 3 года назад
I can see a lot of problems with that, here are a few: -Most of the time moats were also used as cesspits. -They would have to swim without armor as armor would be too heavy to be able to swim in. -If they did get across the moat how would they get over the wall/through the gatehouse without siege equipment. -An attacking force would have been spotted by defenders way before they even reach the moat. ...

What are they gonna do when they swim across the moat, unarmored? Ask nicely to be let in? It's not like they could bring a seige ladder with them, what is an unarmored person with maybe a sword or a spear going to do to a castle wall? If moats were so easily defeated by simply swimming, then why did they exist? And why didn't just swimming across a moat ever work? You tried to be smart but you failed spectacularly.
