This is amazing! My dad was on this boat and is shown in this video. We randomly came across this video not knowing this is the boat that saved him. Thank you!
Hi Kat, if you can let me know who your dad was. I might have random photos on board the ship. My dad was the captain of the boat that was rescued. My email is doanha@gmail.com. Thank you
THIS IS WHAT UNCLE SAM IS ALL ABOUT !!!!! I wish that the present day Washington politicians of 2022 would watch this video. The men of the USS Wabash need to be decorated for their compassion demonstrated during the rescue of these desperate boat people. TY RIGHT HERE IN MY POCKET for showing all of us what a real government is all about.
Nhìn lại thướt phim họ ra đi bằng chiếc thuyền quá kinh khủng ho là những người may mắn dc cứu giúp...cảm ơn những người Mỹ giúp họ vượt qua đến bên bờ hạnh phúc
Thank you for your video, I wish someday Malaysia oil rig had video when they rescued Vietnamese boat people because they rescued our boat back in 1987. I have been watching your videos over and over again. We, Vietnamese asylum seekers were reborn when good Samaritan like you rescued us. Thank you.
There's more to this story...My mom worked for Captain Ryan, after he retired from the Navy, and I grew up knowing him and his wife (very wonderful people). They are still doing well in Florida. Tonight I was told by my mother that one of the young boys on this boat paid Jim and his wife a visit tonight, along with many members of his own family. I don't have specifics but I'm told the boy's family are all doing very well, still living in the states, and have become various types of doctors. I love great stories like this!
@@bigriceburner Please tell your sis at which minute in the clip you are shown---I have looked but must have missed you somehow. I know you told me earlier to look.
Thank you USA, and the world over, rescuing us at our most difficult time. It’s so sad watching the vessel that sailed them to freedom being sunken by M1A1’s.
Although I was not involved with the actual rescue operations, I was serving on the Wabash during that time, probably operating the ship's store. I am proud to have served with all my fellow Wabash brothers! ~ SH3 Vreeland (aka "squeak") BTW...too bad we didn't still have our 3/50s that were removed during the '77-'78 retrofit. Could've sunk their "dinghy" with one shot! LOL
GMG2 onboard at the time. Did not realize it was filmed. Could not sink the boat. That was a longtime ago. Great that the rescued are doing well. Thank God.
Great video. My father in law was aboard and crosses in front of the camera at 5:44. His name is Robert Rocha. If anyone knows him and would like to connect let me know.
Hi Jonh. I am one of those boat people 34 years ago and now living in freedom and well in the US. Please convey my many huge THANKS to your father in law. Thanks to America. May God Bless Our Country.
A young boy from the boat grew up and found a doctor who treated him on the ship. He contacted me about the video and told me his story. Many great stories here. bolinao52.blogspot.com/2015/09/a-call-from-past.html
Hi John, I don't know your father in law. But I was on board the rescue and would personally like to thank him. My email is doanha@gmail.com. Thank you
I was aboard the Wabash from ‘75-‘79 until I flew off the ship the morning of the rescue. I was contacted by a woman who along with her family was rescued that day. She and her family would especially like to personally thank one sailor who jumped off the ship and swam to their boat and sat with them till they could board the ship. I’ve come up with a possible name (Curtis Ray (or Rey), but have no contact Information. If anyone can help me in my search I’d be grateful. Thanks
This film is about the 2nd boat rescued by the Wabash on August 5th. I was referring to the 1st boat rescued with a family Of 19 people. That was at the end of July 1979. I flew off the ship early the morning of the rescue and missed it by an hour or two.
