well thats the biggest mistake they made, hes not a villain, hes a foil, he brings out homers best productive side, he should have been a side character who happened to be caught by the dome and was focused on his science lab and was actually using the dome to further his evil activities while treating homer great while the town itself turned on homer forcing homer to leave, but making homer come back to not only save the town, but have a moral dilemaa between breakign the dome and helping Scorpio, and the best part is, he could have had his freind Hank back and maybe found a compromise where scorpios plan allowed the town to prosper with a dome and a underground highway... and the government then comes and takes the dome because they realize the towns making money from it and not paying ataxes

You know, this is singlehandedly one of the most and important episodes of the simpsons when coupled with all the others. Homer's life, and dignity, finally makes sense, he is functional, has a boss who loves him and is a good freind to all his employees and insists on treating them as humans... or atleast he does with Homer because he actually likes Homer for some strange and exotic reason, or perhaps because Homer is so sincere and upfront most of the time. And Homer gives up his happiness, sanity, job fulfilment and personal friends that make his own life better because his family is so unhappy at the shear functionalidy of the town. Its a paradise that makes his life feel normal finally, but for others its too perfect. and perhaps that is why this is Homers greatest sacrifice for his family ever. And the symbolic nature of every father ever giving up something that made their life make sense and fulfilled and happy on some base industrial and livelihood nature, for the sake of his families happiness and cries to move somewhere else. He gave up his nirvana for his family... how genesis of him, how Angelic and human

And from an empiric, good vs bad your going to say, they are murdering bond, we dont know who the good guy or bad guy is in this, we assume, we know, but we dont know if Scorpio is entitled to that money and got screwed or ruined by a international effort to destroy him, maybe he was actually a very generous and kind person who was trying to create life extension tablets that would cure every disease and even completely remove all the effects of aging from people for extraordinary thousand plus year life spans, and the global military industrial complex said no, and ordered him and his company exterminated to preserve the world population balance, both would have valid arguments to why thier viewpoint was necesary, but the scorpio as a bad guy sudeenly becomes a kind hearted guy trying to make a world without suffering, where as the military leaders are trying to make a world where thier isnt critical overpopulation and undying hordes stripping the world forests bare and leaving nothing edible as everyone slowly suffers the ravages of starvation and theirs no animals or wildlife or bushes or trees left or even insects because we ate evertyhing, all however many billion of us were there after 10 to 30 years of no one dieing and everyone being in thier 20s in all effectiveness. with perfect health we need other things, like advanced techology and food replicatiaion and then we are capable of surviving, and the military thinks about that, the government plans for that, but people just feel pain and desire and drive to accomplish those goals any way possible to fulfill thier lonely lives. In that context, evil and good become different things, we dont even know if scorpio was producing some sort of evil product he sold to support his attempts to take over the world, but we do know he ran a perfect little corner of society, and a haven where he didnt have to have Homer, but he did, and Homer tried to respect and show concern back. I think thats why i liked the Scorpio episode. Because it wasnt a selfish episode, it was a bizare episode where we dont know if it wias for the greater good, or the greater evil, but people werent just hording things, something seriously strange was happening, and it was a single self contained half hour of amazing world building... and i was so young and just fascinated by it and wanted more of it. but we never got more.... but homer got a football team at the end... and scorpio got the east coast i think... it was very fascinating... or was it the west coast? i forget but i do remember what great excitement and anticipation i got when i realized how great and fun that world became when what was ordinary boss stuff turnned out to be either generic good guy bad guy stuff, or the opening to a whole world of adventure and stories, what would Scorpio have done with the money? maybe he just wanted to make society function better

Frankly Scorpio shows the benefits of not doing the whole, killing Minions for failures that may or may not be their fault thing. Scorpio is an extremely kind, encouraging leader, which leads to high morale and greater efficiency. Scorpio encourages Homer in a way no other boss he ever had did and lest we forget; Homer's motivational techniques were working and increasing efficiency in his department. I mean there's a reason the Doomsday Device was way ahead of the Weather Machine and Germ Warfare Divisions. Hank Scorpio is one of The Simpson’s greatest characters :) he is one of the few people we meet who actually believes in Homer. I always felt so sad for Homer in this episode. All of the families problems could’ve been solved. Bart: work harder and actually put in some effort for once. Lisa: get some antihistamines. Marge: spend some quality time with your baby. See!? Homer rules and deserves to be happy.
@PoisonousPen
@PoisonousPen 3 года назад
@el padrino Homer was never a car designer, no matter how much Herb believed in him. Homer is a factory boy, a simple man who only manages to get by in the job he has due to familiarity. Thats why he succeeds under Hank Scorpio. He knows how the business works and gets to just express his views that went unheard under Burns and Smithers.
@JamesTobiasStewart
@JamesTobiasStewart 3 года назад
Yeah this was a case where I didn't have a lot of sympathy for the others, because ultimately it means whenever they complain about the situation in Springfield I remember that in this episode, they chose to go back to it. They chose to return to the crumbling house, the underfunded school, the pollution and the problems of Springfield. Because as you say, there were fixes for all of these things, I mean Marge could have joined a book club or something like that (which she did in another episode), antihistamines should have gotten Lisa back in order and as you say, Bart isn't actually stupid he's just lazy and uninvested; if he put in the effort he could get out of the remedial class before too long. And notably none of them even try to fix their problems, instead they all simply opt to retreat to the familiar mediocrity of Springfield. I mean we know why it had to happen, so the show could revert to status quo, but I never thought it made Lisa, Bart or Marge look all that good.
@theradionicrevival8068
@theradionicrevival8068 2 года назад
I feel like you kinda missed the point of the story tbh. Though i’ll admit, the episode only had 22 mins tk reset everything to the status quo in the end, so it never gave enough time to show how its affecting them, homer was the main focus, but since the story was about how the entire FAMILY feels, you’d think they’d give more time to show their reasons and success and failures at trying to make things work. But anyways, the whole point of the episode was that part of what made homers life great and worth living, WAS his family. If they’re not happy, he can’t fully live a comfortable life without them being happy too. So this was never fit to be the “perfect setup for homer” because what makes homer happy isn’t entirely based around just himself. This was always just how older homer was portrayed. Dude’s a selfish, lazy asshole but a good guy at heart (and a big softie). Ironically his insane selfishness tied in perfectly with his love for his family. Since he loved them that much, he’d do tons of stupid shit to keep them around cause it keeps him happy, despite not benefiting from it beyond dopamine boosts and emotional attachments

That's not what he was referencing. We don't know what Homer was referencing, that's the joke. Hank asked that question because the obvious answer would have been "no" but for some reason, Homer had seen it before. It makes you think "LOL when?!?" It's similar to another joke in another episode where they show the birds going crazy at a bird sanctuary, attacking people, and Hans Moleman is on the phone where he asks "I need the biggest seed bell you have... ... ...no, that's too big." The joke is that it was an unexpected response. We don't know what the person on the other end of the phone line said, but apparently they quoted a size that was so big that it was "too big" to stop thousands of birds from massacring people. It makes you think "LOL how can it be too big?!?"

I doubt you would say that if this episode aired 20 years later in Season 28. The writer of this episode was spoiled from having a good reputation and forgot to make Homer and Hank carry the episode's plot instead of the other Simpsons who were bored with Cypress Creek and wanted to move back to Springfield. If you want to see a version of this episode's plot done right with less spoiled writers who had a bad reputation, see Teen Titans Go's Cool School. I swear that episode did more with Rose Wilson in 11 Minutes than this episode did with Hank Scorpio in 22 minutes. They didn't have Hank Scorpio carry the plot, instead he just exists to pander to James Bond fans and distract viewers from this episode's lack of a decent plot from the other Simpsons. Kumiko worked better as a good new character in Married to the Blob from Season 25 because she actually carried the episode's plot, whereas Hank Scorpio didn't carry the plot of You Only Move Twice. This was a better time for things like this because The Simpsons was going stale and having a funny new character (if they made You Only Move Twice today 20 years later) wouldn't be too effective. @LukeMM95
@LukeMM95 8 лет назад
+DowellForPASenate Actually the only thing that increased was the picture quality. The actual animation quality decreased. Back in the 90s most of the animation was hand drawn, which not only added to the humour but also made the characters more expressive and movement more lively. Now everything's digital and the characters move like robots. If you don't believe me, just look at this gif: www.cartoonbrew.com/wp-content/uploads/simpsonscompare.gif
@killswitchlee123
@killswitchlee123 7 лет назад
LukeMM95 that gif alone sets the comparison between classic and modern Simpsons. That expression of relief that classic Marge gives when Maggie is placed into the shopping trolley signifies her grace and dignity as a mother concerned for her child's welfare. Modern Marge looks robotic and lifeless, like as if she doesn't give a shit. The classic versions of the characters had a heart and a certain human quality. The modern Simpsons try to cram in as many "funnies" as possible, even in the opening sequence, and those long drawn-out couch gags are annoying.

@IRGhost0
@IRGhost0 4 года назад
@@atticus5106 It wasn't a spinoff in the normal sense. You might think of The Simpsons as a spinoff of those shorts, but when people think of spinoffs, they generally think of a character or characters on a show getting remade into their own show. That was different with The Simpsons, because those shorts were characters independent of Tracey Ullman's show that were featured between Tracey's sketches.
