The very first beat: How a heart starts to pulse

One moment there's nothing, the next... a heartbeat. As a vertebrate embryo grows, its heart tissue starts to pulse well before it's needed. But how does the developing heart actually co-ordinate that very first beat?
Using microscopes and glowing fluorescent proteins, researchers have been able to watch zebrafish embryos during this key point in development and examine the process in real time.

The first beat of a heart is more or less by chance, because it becomes more sensitive to electric charges in the environment? Does the size of the heart matter? Does that mean, if an embryo is in an environment, where there is absolutly no electrical charge, the heart can't start to contract? Could this be the reason, why most big animals develop inside their mother? And what about... crocodiles for example? Is there a difference between cold-blooded and warm-blooded animals?

A conjecture: oscillation will happen with vanishingly small input, basically thermal noise that is always everywhere. The circuit keeps tuning up until it becomes an oscillator, basically.

The sinoatrial node (SA) is a dedicated group of cells within a heart that produce a chemical “action potential.” Basic chemical function of the SA node relies on sodium, potassium, and calcium. See Wikipedia for a detailed explanation.

The first beat of a heart is more or less by chance, because it becomes more sensitive to electric charges in the environment - But where does the actual cellular "sense" for the increased electrical sensitivity come from? Anthropomorphizing the cell with sense doesn't actually explain away the cause for a sense to exist in the first place. An electron bound at a singular location can "sense" that it's around a positive charge by the pulling force of attraction that exists in and around the field for the charge all the way till infinity. Why or how does that sense arise?
@AbCd-kq3ky
@AbCd-kq3ky 7 месяцев назад
I imagine this might have something to do with ion channel expression.
@DeewarPutr
@DeewarPutr 7 месяцев назад
@@AbCd-kq3ky No doubt, ions existing devoid of their neutralizing charges give rise to those fields, does the existence of ions then predicate synchronized biological impulses? If yes how do neutral molecules "know" it's ripe time to ionize and participate in an almost "spontaneous" delocalized phase transition? I feel collectively there is more going on that what meets the eye.
@FutureAIDev2015
@FutureAIDev2015 7 месяцев назад
The way I understand it heart cells, like any other electrically excitable cell like a neuron, have what are known as ion channel proteins, some of which are sensitive to external changes in voltage. That is, they open or close when the voltage across the membrane they're embedded in crosses a threshold.

The problem that I have with this video is it is saying that the cells just become sensitive to electricity around them and thats what kickstarts it. So where is the electricity coming from? Whats generating that? If its just naturally in tissue then whats generating that? Is it static electricity? Is it an electrical field from the earth? If its none of these or something else then one could say the electricity is being generated by the cells themselves and not the surrounding environment. So the next question would be, how are the cells creating electricity?

The entire biological system is astonishing actually. There's chemical activity, mechanical engineering, there's physics involved, also the position of heart closer to the head because of the gravity issue and much much more. So, how could cells have this knowledge on their own?? Someone surely has designed all this who knew about chemical activity, physics and engineering. Our heart has valves which is a very basic mechanical system found in pumps etc. I believe someone in our own image designed all this...
