The F-35 is cutting edge, its air intakes are often presented as a recent researc. In truth, the idea is 60 years old and it has an unlikely origin.
Stay with me if you want to learn how the diverterless supersonic intake was born.
Enjoy!

Hi. Since you have done videos on all the wings and this is a video on one type of intakes - can you do a video on all types of intakes as well? DSI, movable cones etc but also talk about intake placement - below wing, shoulder, dorsal and so on. And also shed a bit of light on the YF-23 intakes - the curious baffle like structures for stealth seen on it and why that tech didn't get carried forward. Very curious on the topic and as you say "the stuff we discuss here is not found anywhere else on the internet" :-P

F-105 had diverterless supersonic inlets, developed in the early 1950s, for its first flight in October 1955. Alexander Kartvelishvili was the chief engineer, who was born in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Sir, how about the gap in the P51 between the radiator intake and underside, is this to avoid the effect of the boundary layer? Also, does the X32 also use DSI? Looks like it.

Did the F105 Thunderchief not have similar intakes? In general look, they appear similar in not have diverters, although the shape is different.
@kathrynck
@kathrynck 10 месяцев назад
Is there no maximum speed at which the diversion of boundary layer air stops working well with this design? It seems not, at least not at speeds up to mach 2.5. But I'm just curious if that approach holds up at say mach 3 or 4 or something really fast like that? For that matter, I kinda wonder if it works with hypersonic designs (plasma behaves somewhat differently than gaseous air). EDIT: I notice that the YF-23 did not have "bumps" in it's divertless design. Different approach?
@magalenin
@magalenin 3 года назад
May I have a question. It regarded mostly for the conventional, splitter plate solution. It splitted the slow boundary layer, this is understandable. But there is again a surface inside the intake, the velocity difference is still there, why there is not created a new boundary layer beside it?
@Millennium7HistoryTech
@Millennium7HistoryTech 3 года назад
It does, but since it is created downstream of the compression zone, it is thin and not developed when it is ingested.
@jnmason6283
@jnmason6283 3 года назад
You may also notice (especially on the Eurofighter @9:37) there are hundreds of tiny holes just before the intake that act as a boundary layer control. If I'm not mistaken, air is sucked through these holes and considerably reduces the developpment of a boundary layer. Maybe a topic for another video? A documentary on the YF-23 I watched a few months back explained the science behind this feature.
@PaulHigginbothamSr
@PaulHigginbothamSr 4 года назад
This video was not long enough. It was cut short with just mentions of favorable constituents. I am positive books and books have been written about air intakes. On the P-51 it was thought that the air heated by the radiator scoop reduced the effect of suction at the rear of the aircraft slowing down the top speed. If this was so on the P-51, the P-47 the effect would have been even greater because of the massive frontal area. Many people did not know the same intercooler effect was under the P-47 with the intercooler for the air compressed by the turbo supercharger.
@yelectric1893
@yelectric1893 4 года назад
It is cool to see the different kinds of intakes. I heard that some passenger plane concepts like the Aurora use an intake that sucks in the boundary layer air for less drag on the turbofan. However, the distribution of intake pressure upon the turbofan was too unbalanced and could not be done yet. I don’t really know the technical terms, but this video has helped me learn many steps closer.

If it isn't permissible to fly at to above Mach 1.0, does it even require a DSI system.
@marcbrasse747
@marcbrasse747 4 года назад
Now, this is a video from which I really learned A LOT. So basically these DSI intakes are a further developments of the Ferry scoop intake. Which suddenly figures when the connection is made. You should have shown a picture of the XF-103 as well. It looked as if it could even scoop sugar. :-) Am I to understand that the negative leading edge of the DSI intakes actually have a negative leading edge to make part of the boundary layer bleed off to the sides? In other words. The majority of the bulge has to be in front of the intskes leading edge? There goes the inlet design of my paper STOVL project. Back to the drawing board! :-) Talking about Lockheed rewriting history: Especially US sources nowadays claim Lockheed financed the development of the Yakovlev's Yak 41 translatable exhaust when the Sowjet Union still existed! How very peculiar! I wonder if Lockheed started that story as well.

@rgloria40

However, does this cause or restrict the speed of the F35 to MACH 1.6. In fact, most jets today cannot do MACH 2.0 or better with this configuration except the Chinese/Russia design philosophy. I think the intake actually makes it more economical versus stealth or speed. Not ideal for a military jet. Or the Old US FARTS without real STEM Degree are outsourcing/offshoring to other countries...causing security vulnerability.

Buona serata

The supersonic intakes are great.... except the F-35 is flight restricted and can’t go supersonic for a prolonged period without falling to f*#+ing pieces!? 🤣😂 I tried to give this turkey a chance, I really did, but that one was the last straw for me; along with putting all of our ‘eggs’ in one basket. I hope the damn thing proves me wrong and, ultimately, turns out to be the next F-18 or A-10 but I severely doubt it.

From a capability standpoint the best option is to acquire only Rafale and Advanced Hawk and cancel all the rest. Millennium 7 * HistoryTech is an excellent source for aeronautical engineering and history. But for procurement advice it is a bit out of his area because while he can give a detailed technical comparison there are operational, strategic, logistical, economic, and political considerations as well. Comparison videos of what is better also tend to be overly narrow in focus and there are many variables to consider in real world use such as which specific variants and upgrades are included, which specific weapons are used, and how those aircraft are used as part of an overall defense strategy. I do not know which aircraft he would suggest but he might opt to avoid getting into such a debate because of the political and nationalistic sentiments that can be involved.
@ashwin7002
@ashwin7002 4 года назад
@@stupidburpIndeed no one could get everything right about procurement however we could usher a discussion here that goes a long way in creating a series of videos from different independent sources allowing for wide range of voices to be heard, also there are quite a few industry experts who also watch these videos allowing them to build a narrative when procurement come to negotiations. Aha! I have a model of the Aeritalia/Embraer AMX. I love that plane. It is a near-perfectly designed aircraft for ground attack, close air support and coastal defence. It does what it's supposed to do and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. As for the "F"-35.... What a terrible, overpriced and horribly-executed piece of garbage. It started its life as the Russian Yakovlev Yak-141 Freestyle which Lockheed bought. This ground-attack aircraft that the Americans call a "multi-role fighter" just to fool more countries into buying it has the second-worst level of wing-loading (after the MiG-35 but the MiG-35 has vectored thrust) and the absolute worst thrust to weight ratio of all modern fighters. It's also the slowest supersonic combat aircraft in the world with a top speed of only Mach 1.6. This means that it's a horrible air superiority fighter and an even worse interceptor. It should be called the A-35. This plane is a dog's breakfast because a (MiG-31) Foxhound would eat it for breakfast.
